- 2 factor Authentification, calling, texting while traveling internationally - FREE
Have you ever been locked out of your email, Facebook, or bank account and been texted a verification code to your cellphone? ... but your phone is on Airplane mode or has a traveler's SIM card because you're out of the country... Uh oh.
Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp are great, but you don't have a dial pad, can't call a landline, and can only contact people who are also using the app.
In today's video I'll be sharing how you can get one (FREE) consistent phone number that you can use worldwide to text, make phone calls, create new accounts and for two-factor authentication when you need to verify your existing accounts. Trust me, you will want to set this up before you leave for your trip.

Very useful video for anyone needing a global number and I love the end :)
Most USA-based people probably know this already but T-Mobile offers many plans which include data and text (almost) worldwide at no extra cost. I've used this successfully in various countries in Asia - speed will be less than a local SIM (unless you pay supplement) but it's "free" (more correctly - included with your USA plan at no extra charge - unlike most other USA carriers who have significant additional charges). I used to purchase local SIMs but then couldn't receive texts to my USA phone number which I now can.
Do you know any app that their number will work permanently for Whatsapp and will work in these countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Philippines, south Korea and Japan because those are the counties I will be going to
Wow! This is so great. How come I never came across this before with all the other travelers I've been following on RUclips? You are right. This verification procedure was so annoying when happening time after time. Thanks so much for this tip.
Hi
Perfect Megan TY for The travel Tips , Yes I was locked out at a ATM when I arrived in another state lucky the bank had a branch 3 blocks away during banking hours . Some times you just Get Lucky .
You're very welcome! Hope to catch you back on the channel again soon! :)
Off this subject, if you need your bank to send you a new debit or credit card while in a far away country....how would you do that ? Fedex ? Thx !
*YES! Every time I come from Canada to Thailand I get locked out of one of my accounts that it why I wish I seen this video 3 years ago or at the very least before I Let Canada last Nov. Thanks for the Tips. Travel Safe & Be Well. I forgot to ask, 3 years later are you still using FONGO? I ask because I don't see a link in the description below. I wonder if we where in Danang at the same time FEB 2020. Travel Safe & Be Well.*
Sounds great however I am unable to download the mobile app as it says "This item isn't available in our country". :( I am a Canadian living full-time in Mexico and would love to have a CDN # to use for RBC verification.
Hello! Please which app is the best to use now for a foreign number and that can receive call and sms???
It might be said differently in Canada but in the States, we say VOIP like "boy-p". :) Good video and good reminder to have a data-enabled backup phone number instead of just a carrier-dependent number.
Haha I have never heard it pronounced that way! Thanks for sharing!
In DC and never heard that before😂😂
Could we have an update. It appears that Fongo is only for Canada
Not sure if you were doing it on purpose, but every time you said "authentification" in stead of "authentication" I couldn't help but smile
And how she pronounces VoIP is funny too
@@Lagonda I've heard that one before ... just not from someone of her generation
I would LOVE to say I was doing this on purpose... 😂😂😂
Thanks megan! I use wifi calling on my home number so i can just use wifi or another phone i bring with a hotspot to call/text on my home number. I also have dual sim phones theyre handy
Oh wow, Michael you're way ahead of me on this! Awesome!!
Portable Professional do they have that on canadian carriers? i bet t mobile at least has it in canada you should check them out
Brilliant! You're one smart cookie that's why I keep watching. Next time in Vietnam please visit Da Lat I value your opinion.
I'm not sure I'll make it to Da Lat on this trip, but I do hear great things!!
Thanks Megan for the tips! Fongo say "you get unlimited text and media messaging to all Fongo users" but the banks or social media will not be texting with Fongo. Do the texts still go through? Looks like TextFree can also make calls but you need to purchase minutes. Think I'll sign up for TextFree! Have a great time in Da Nang!
Yup, I receive texts and calls to my Fongo number. It's just like any regular phone number so anyone can reach you via landline/cellphone. I get my bank codes (or any other texts) sent to my Fongo number.
Clear and concise, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I think you are a wonderful teacher about this could-be complicated issue, and also let me say, you are very beautiful.
Thankyou very much for your worth listening video, and I will try your advice tricks.
Perfect! Great info. I enjoyed the re-enactments at the end, too! 😂
Haha thanks, glad it was helpful! I used to get stuck calling my mother ALL the time. So much easier to have a universal number!
Hi Megan, is this info still good for now!
Great info👍 I use similar services which are 2nd line and text plus so that I can have US phone numbers. Good thing is both services is free. Bad thing is these numbers will be expired in one week if I don't use them. That is why I have two phone numbers so that I can send messages to myself to keep these numbers alive. So I have a question for you. Do these services you mentioned in your video ask you to use their services regularly to keep the numbers alive?
Yes! Textfree needs some activity every 30 days, and Fongo needs activity every few months... but I am not sure the exact timeline. Any activity, does not need to be a paid service.
@@PortableProfessional That' great! You found better services than I did.
YES! I didn't realize what a hassle this would be until I got locked out. I need to set this up. Hey, you have a new ending!
Right!? It's something I never even thought about until it started happening to me! Good thing to know before travel. :)
Hey Megan Another interesting video if I travel outside a cruise it will be very useful. Lovely dramatic representation unless you were really calling your mom.
Dramatic representation base don (too many) real life experiences 😂
Will i be able to keep my phone number if i do get it will that number be my new phone number
Cool information, thank you.
Great info! Though even as of now, you can't receive verification codes via Fongo right?
I don't think so either. I have Fongo and have not been able to receive verification codes.
I am abroad /UK and I am shut out of my US bank account as I cant receive my 4 digit text code!!!!! What pain!!. So I will try to add one of those numbers I hope i am able to fo it!! Thank you! Best video so far!
Hello, Have you called your bank to let them know where you are so they can unlock your account. Can you not use the online banking?
@@Whichofthefavors Yes I can use online banking but they still have to send the code. I bought a Skype number in the end and paid $34 (half price as I have a subscription) and sure enough it worked and I received the 4 digit code and then I was able to add that new skype number! I love skype! I may get the free number next year so I dont have to pay. Im always travelling and this is gonna help me. Hope this info helps someone to!
I should have set it up before I left!!!
@@tankersmit Happy to hear that. Look into getting a google voice number. You can use that number to get calls and texts abroad for free and its linked to your gmail. As long as you have an internet connection, your friends and family can call you. Its free and better than Skype which you have to pay for. You will also be able to connect your US number to google voice.
Great info but can i get the number even that i am already outside of US?
Great video! I am moving from Australia to Canada and would like to retain my Australian mobile number and forward all texts and calls to a new Canadian mobile number (without paying for exorbitant roaming fees). Could you please suggest how do I manage this? Thank you so much!!!
You can port your Australian mobile phone number or landline telephone number to Google Voice… and from there have all your spoken messages and text messages forwarded to your customary email.
It would be better to start with a fresh Gmail account. This way you'll have an undistarbed email devote only to your spoken messages and text messages.
NOTE.- I don’t know how it works with “telephone calls in real time” made from Australia.
Excellent information!!! I hope this still works till now. I like you, very cute 🥰
"The ONE thing" in the background? Nice!
One of my favorites!!
Portable Professional So if you had to choose only the ONE thing of your Books 📖, it would maybe „the ONE thing“ 😁
Excellent info! Thank you.
Wassup
Thank you.
This is my good Feedback :
Thanks again this really frees up some stress!
I will use That TextFree for sure.
Very Long story But In Thailand, I had to buy a new phone there.
When You do You have to give them a photocopy/print out of your passport.
I Have Not had a data plan in ages. I think the cybercops do not Like to see "Unknown " when seeing who is on WiFi.
It was not too expensive but your way is better ( Girls are Smart )
Haha thanks for the feedback- both ways work! It's just something to think about before travel that may be overlooked. Not the case for you, I know you know your stuff! 👌
@@PortableProfessional well I am always learning.
Now Congo is $7.99 for the app. Also do you know of a cheap international data app or plan. Was using Chatsim but always had issues.
Fongo, bloody autocorrect.
Good tutorial,,, Google voice available
There is any application free without paying anything
Great tip thank you
You're welcome- safe travels!!
Hi
Which one is best based on your experience?
Useful tips thanks Megan. Now fess up just how many times have you had to ring your mother?
... ... ... No comment. 😂
Hi Megan, this is a very informative, practical and instructive video!
Do you know if Google Voice phone number is workable for two-factor authentication when you travel abroad? Can you access the security code text to your Google Voice number by logging into the Google Voice website from overseas?
Regarding locking out of your bank accounts, US banks and stock brokerages close accounts of people who live overseas with overseas postal address more than six months. How do you or your fellow travelers maintain bank accounts in their home countries when they live overseas for a few years and do not have postal address in their home countries?
Thank you!
Wow, these are really good questions... and I wish I could say i had a really goo answer for you!! I have never actually used Google Voice. It seems like the go-to for many people, and I vaguely remember looking into it and ruling it out in favor of Fongo/Text free. I also have a postal address in Canada and have never looked into maintaining an account without one. US friends that live out of the US long term and are maintaining an account will use a family members address. I'll keep my ears out for anyone in this situation and see if I can get back to you with a better answer. 🤓
@@PortableProfessional You can apply for a Google Voice number easily in a few minutes. First log into your gmail account (just apply for one if you don't have one yet). Then type google dot voice dot com in the URL address. Once you are in, click to apply for a google number. You can select one of the many different phone area codes that you like. Then google voice will call or text a pass code to your real phone number for authentication. Then you are good to go! To make a google voice call from your laptop, just log into the google voice web page and make a call. I have been using google voice for many years back to the time when long distance phone calls were expensive. It is very reliable and free. It is nice to have google voice as a backup to whatever you are using when you travel overseas. But that brings us back to the question above whether two-factor text authentication will work when you are abroad. If your bank allows you to have two different phone numbers for authentication, then you can add the google number as a backup and try it out when you are in Da Nang to see if it works and allows you to log onto their web page to get the text pass code.
The other second question above is difficult to get a good answer. Expats from whatever country that travel for an extended period overseas whose home country banks close their accounts have to deal with this issue.
@@PortableProfessional Hello Meghan,
I am actually living in Morocco, but I am searching for a job in France...so in order to be able to receive calls from french employers and call them back I heard of Skype numbers...in this case should I get a number for Morocco or France ?
Does this work for a verification code from bank or credit card?
Yes, that's how I use it! Safe travels thanks so much for watching and hope to see you on the channel again.
@@PortableProfessional That requires that I change my phone number with the bank to the global number first, right?
Wooooow, October 2021, it's working
"authentification" cute😊
you are my best idol, i love you so much
Thank you! I have not gotten this comment before- appreciate it! 😂😂
UK numbers too?
It’s all free until you want to use the basic features. Nothing is free.
Wow great information your so so cute
To cut all the hassle, why not just use Google Voice? It works everywhere except China, but you can use VPN and still enjoy full-on google services. Google swore that they will make Google Voice free until the end of the time anyways. Enjoy!
apparently it's not available in eastern europe as well... I'll look into using it via VPN though, thanks for suggestion.
Smart girl
I also use talku for a free number
Yup, that one is great too! Key is setting things up before you go. Thanks for sharing!
Your very nice love you 😍
your so cute keep up the good work!
Aw, thank you! Hope to catch you back on the channel again soon!
@@PortableProfessional Your welcome any time my friend!!!
Nice
YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL 😍
From what I can tell, one of these services are only good for Canada and the other only good for the US. I watched this video for nothing it seems.
She looks like Mary Jane from the original Spider-Man
Basic informative deets. I detect a German accent in her grueling attempt not to have one, lol!
It's authentication not authentification lol
😂😂😂 I honestly can't believe I didn't catch myself saying this while filming. Embarrassing and a mistake I won't soon make again!
thumbs up
Thanks, Stanley!
