On February 12, 2023, RCWA began what felt like a "small" study. Rather than systematically delivering needles, batteries, knives and other hazardous items to our local Household Hazardous Waste facilities as they were recovered, we would store them for 1 year and then evaluate and disclose the results at the end of the 1 year period. Due to our busy schedules, we extended the study period to 16 months.
On Wednesday evening, the final unveiling took place during our first (and last) RCWA Battery Bash! The results were truly tantalizing, but also horrific and mind-blowing. Here are our final 16-month tallies:
🔋32,640 Small Cell Batteries (Size D or smaller)
    ◼️148 Large Cell Batteries
*Total weight of all batteries: 2,147 pounds!
    💉 12,526 Needles
    📱 362 Cell Phones
    🔳 53 Tablets
    💻 35 Laptops
    🔪 199 Knives
    ✂️ 39 Scissors
    ⚔️ 7 Machetes
☠️ 63 Other forms of eWaste
We would like to not only thank the folks who came out on Wednesday to participate in the arduous work of displaying and cataloging all of these items (estimated at over 2,600 pounds), we would also like to thank the amazing volunteers who painstakingly removed all of these dangerous materials from local waterways over the past 16 months - in addition to the more than 1.6 Million Pounds of other trash and debris materials!!! You all are true heroes! 💪💚
All of these items will now receive safe and proper disposal.
We hope that the sobering results of this study garner the widespread attention deserved. These items are toxic and dangerous and all reasonable and necessary measures must be taken to not only remove them from our waterways, but also to prevent them from continuing to be discarded there.
    Thank you everyone. 🌟
