  • Sarah Michelle Gellar is speaking out following ‘Buffy’ co-star Charisma Carpenter’s misconduct claims against Joss Whedon on Wednesday. Carpenter posted a statement to Instagram where she alleged Whedon ‘created hostile and toxic work environments’ on the sets of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Angel.’ Gellar later posted a brief statement to Instagram, writing, ‘I don't want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon.’ These new allegations follow ‘Justice League’ actor Ray Fisher’s misconduct claims against Whedon, which spawned an investigation by WarnerMedia last year. ET has reached out to Whedon's reps for comment.

Joss promised he wouldn't kill her, and then what happens, he added in that last scene of Angel finding out she died. What's interesting is they wanted Buffy to come back for that 100th episode but SMG was busy so they asked Charisma to. Makes me wonder if we would even hear or see Cordy again after Season 4 or if they would briefly mention her.

It’s come to my understanding that when dealing with deep seeded traumatic issues, mentally and emotionally you have to prepare yourself before facing the monster. We have both male and female stars who have worked under joss whedon and are speaking out about what they dealt with on set. Now many of you don’t know what set hours are, but they are grueling, long and tiresome. So imagine being belittled non-stop at work and too ashamed or scared to speak up because you might just be black balled and lose your career. A career you hoped, prayed and worked your butt off for that 1 chance that this particular project may be your catalyst to success and longevity. So please take that into consideration before you open your mouth and call bs👌🏾 Now I don’t believe in cancel culture, but I do believe in calling out negative behavior so it is corrected as we all deserve to be respected and feel safe, especially while at work.

This is literally happening to me in my internship right now (I'm a graduate student in the sciences). This resonated a lot with me even though I already understood and believed CC's allegations due to the outpouring of support her statements had.
It's really hard to speak out until you have nothing left to protect. But it still takes a toll emotionally-speaking, even if it is much after the fact.
I love what Joss created, but I am sad that he treated people so poorly.

    • @aguynamednathan

And imagine having to be in charge of all that. Imagine having to attempt to communicate your beloved artistic vision to a crew of actors who don't always get it and aren't always cooperative, while dealing with budget limitations, producers attempting to manipulate your vision in favor of a more profitable one, facing the constant threat of cancelation, dealing with strict filming schedules, limited special effects, all while maintaining a balance in your own marriage and family life.
Joss Whedon delivered some of the best television via four shows (three good ones) and entertained and influenced thousands of devoted fans. He launched the careers of young actors. He featured beautiful women in a way that didn't exploit their sexuality, but rather wove it into the narrative in a believable and respectful manner. He made men gentle and sensitive without weakening or emasculating them. And he did all this via engaging action, genuine humor, and a narrative that slapped cliché in the face.
All I've read is that he was a boss who had tremendous pressure placed on him and got stressed at times. That "toxic" environment helped facilitate some amazing performances. And hey! Who's speaking out? Does David Boreanaz have an issue with him? How 'bout Anthony Stewart Head? Has Allison Hannigan taken to Twitter? Julie Benz? Juliet Landau? Seth Green?
Nah, they've been too busy actually having post Buffy careers to really worry about tensions of sets past.
But the fan base is the real villain here. How quickly the people who once lauded the brilliant writer/director Joss Whedon only to now go cancel culture crazy on him is a turn swifter than Angel finding true happiness only to become Angelus.
Screw that. Thank you, Joss Whedon, for providing some of the best television I have ever enjoyed.

Sarah was no saint, though. I saw a news article about Joss behavior using as an example a story James Marsters (who played Spike) often tells about Joss not liking Spike's popularity and being frankly aggressive about it, but James also told stories about Sarah behaving entitled, superior and being distant from most of the cast because she was 'the star of the show'. The movie/tv business back then was a different beast. Joss's major mistake was thinking he could behave the same towards Ray Fisher in 2015/2016 as he did to his cast of Buffy back in the 90's. Sarah is a smart woman and I'm 100% sure that nowadays she wouldn't behave like she did in her Buffy days if she were playing Captain Marvel herself (Brie didn't get the memo, though).
I'm not even sure why I'm pointing all of this out though, since I honestly don't care if Joss is or not canceled. He deserves it regardless.

If she carried herself that way, distanced herself &that came across as entitled, then so be it. She did not& does not need to prove herself to anyone. I don't know if the fandom knew about this when the showed aired since i watched it about 10 years later. But I do remember visiting the fandom groups or forums in early 2010s and the topic of her being fired because Joss was not that happy with her pregnancy was defiantly brought up in the discussions of the horrible arc Cordelia received. I remember people calling Cordelia's relationship with Connor the ultimate revenge on the actress.

I watched the show when it was airing and was mind blown 🤯 by that Cordelia and Connor arc. I couldn’t wrap my head around why they did that. It was gross and embarrassing, just so NOT Cordelia! I was so happy when season 5 came because things got fun again and they sent Conner problematic ass on somewhere. But Cordelia wasn’t on the show no more. I always had thought she quit on her own freewill but we found out later that Joss fired her! The whole thing didn’t make sense. I always expected her to come back because when it was airing, they made it seem like she was on a leave of absence. But when they KILLED her I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Now hearing her speak out, a lot of things make sense. The way they did Cordelia was horrible.

Good for Charisma. I remember her giving interviews back then and saying she thought getting killed off was punishment for her pregnancy. I've had a question mark in my head since then about Joss. Not anymore. What he did was horrible and no one is to blame for his choices but himself. He Chose to treat his employees this way. Zoe Saldana did an interview after GotG where she said she was really pursued for a project, said yes to it while telling them she had twin baby boys and would need some accomodations. She was immediately told she was being difficult. She never named the project but I've often wondered.

I have no clue what you are trying to say. And wtf does trump have to do with this? He wasn't president when Buffy, Angel, and Firefly were on tv.
But I will say this - I am perfectly capable of reading a book or watching a tv show/movie and having a different opinion of the author/producer/director.
      Some examples:
      * I don't agree with JK Rowling's opinions on transgender issues. I thoroughly enjoyed her Harry Potter books, however, and have fond memories of reading them. I have saved my copies in case my kids ever want to read them.
      * I get a kick out of The Great Cthulu and the mythos for him and the other Great Old Ones. I also despise the racist and anti-semitic beliefs of the author and creator, H.P. Lovecraft.
And it's okay for me to keep my fond memories and enjoyment whether or not I decide to continue re-reading them. I will keep my fond memories of the characters, actors and storylines in JW's shows now knowing and appreciating even more the fantastic work put out by everyone on set. Fantastic work in spite of a boss who has no clue how to conduct himself around female employees or even his own wife.
It's like I tell my kids when we are discussing history and important historical figures, "remember that all these people, regardless of their wealth and power, are just that. People. All humans make good and bad choices. No person is perfect and if they tell you they are, they're lying. Our nation's founding fathers did some great things for this nation and it's people. Never forget that. We honor them for that. We must also recognize that they were human beings and made some mistakes and some terrible choices. This in no way diminishes the important work they did, but it does show us where some of our problems stem from and maybe a hint at making things better."
Yes I also teach my kids that we are a great nation filled with Human Beings and we are not perfect. We as a nation make mistakes just like all the other nations on this planet and we have to learn from them so we don't repeat past mistakes.

      @Abstract852 3 года назад +3

Probably contractual, there's often a clause relating to the network rather than the show (for cases like spin offs, it's more flexible). Initially both shows were on the same network, after Buffy changed network she never appeared on Angel because UPN didn't allow Buffy characters on Angel but Angel characters could appear on Buffy.
Charisma effectively appeared in 7 seasons (1997 to 1999 on buffy, 1999 to 2003 on angel) + 1 episode in 2004. 7 seasons is the standard length of most tv contracts....so may not have really been a "choice". Note Buffy itself only went 7 seasons (likely in part to Gellar being done) and Angel being 5 seasons (possibly because the first 2 years of a few of their contracts, particularly David, were on Buffy) .

Lol comparing a director that is hard to work with who had conflicts with a few people he was directing to a freak that regularly threatened to ruin careers of actresses if they didn't perform sexual acts for him is a bit much. Joss Whedon has been known to be hard to work with for years. It *isn't* always women and I've never heard of any sexual allegations. He may have sexually assaulted someone but I can't remember anyone even accusing him of that. He's a writer/director. Too many of them have huge egos. There have been a ton of stories much worse than any you've heard attributed to Whedon but they are from directors that are also known to be hard to work with. Yet everyone knows they are mean and aggressive people. So they are non-stories. At what point is this an actress that had an ugly end to professional relationship and disagreements with an egotistical director. It's kinda funny how this immediately gets thrown into the same category as Weinstein. I gotta wonder why she would sign up for years of working on "Angel" if it was really that bad. There hasn't been a single other performer from buffy that has said they had a similar experience. The girl that played buffy's sister said there was some rule about them not being alone together. Apparently it was later reported that it was a contractual stipulation that studio puts in place for minors on the set.

I haven't seen THAT, (contract stipulation for minors) ANYWHERE, so pls link me to where it was "reported". *After all, SMG was a minor when she started the show.* And SEVERAL other performers from Buffy have said they had a similar experience. Marsters has said that Joss yelled at him, and that the rape scene forced him into therapy. Amber Benson has backed up Charisma's claims, as have Claire Kramer, and writer Jose Molina. (TBF: Charisma and Amber have just sold out tickets to a con for the end of the month, so.. Maybe Charisma got a definite "no" on the Buffy reboot and retold her pregnancy story now.) I'm not in total disagreement with you about Joss and his ego. I just think that Joss is trouble(d) and needs help.

If you're going to do an article do both sides give it equal footing don't make it seem like it's a one-sided argument. Joss took it on the jaw after coming in and having the heads of Warner Brothers brave down his throat to finish the project that wasn't even his. That's why James Gunn director of The suicide squad came out and thanked Warner Brothers for having limited interference in his project because they have known to overstep their bounds. I don't think there are allegatons of Sexual Harrassment against Joss Whedon. He was Mean. There may be some Sexism or Reverse Sexism involved. Kate Mulgrew did a great job playing the never Heoric and Noble Captain Janeway of Star Trek:Voyager. But in real life, Kate Mulgrew was very much different than her character. When Jeri Ryan's - Seven of Nine Character was added in the Fourth Season of Star Trek: Voyager she became jealous that Jeri Ryan's character got all the attention and became the De-Facto Star of the Show. Kate Mulgrew was purposely Mean and Cruel to Jeri Ryan trying to make her quit the show. Jeri Ryan said this only stopped when she started dating one of the Showrunners.
If this had been a Male Lead doing this to a Female, it would not have been tolerated and the Male Lead would have most probably been fired and his career would have been destroyed. That is why I am skeptical of thse charges against Joss Whedon. I remember previously SJM saying what a great guy Joss Whedon was. They shouldn't do a REboot of Buffy without him. Why the change is what I would like to know?

The whole hostile work environment crap has always baffled me. If the situation is that bad, why would you continue to work there? Why would you want to contribute to the success of a boss like that anyway?
Multiple stories about Joss Whedon being hard to work with have been around for years. How is this a surprise? He's had plenty of arguments with plenty of *male* actors too. It apparently wasn't so toxic that she also signed up to do Angel. It apparently wasn't so hostile that she quit. She was wrote out of the show because all the pregnancy and religious conflicts that occurred between them. This sounds like a person that doesn't understand the difference between abuse and arguments. If it was a hostile and toxic work environment *only* for you, wasn't it really just hostility because of disagreements you had with eachother? This one sounds pretty petty to me. I've also heard about actors and actresses being hard to deal with as well making ridicules requests of directors. Many directors have to be aggressive and even mean just to assert authority over an entire cast of people with large egos.
You have *endless hours* of recordings of Tom Cruise berating and tearing into *entire sets* of cast and crew. He has threatened to and directly fired people for not following special rules like not making eye contact with him. Yet nobody blinks twice. Why the double standard? Why is he just "hard to work with" yet 2 previous workers complain of the same thing and everyone labels Whedon as a Weinstein? I just can't jump on a sympathy bandwagon when it comes to stories that involve hostile work environments that the person willing subjected themselves to for years on end. Especially when the 2 people in question are a boss that eventually fired that worker that signed up for a second job with them.
If you get beat by your bf/spouse once, you are a victim and they have been exposed as inhuman filth. If you stick around for more beatings, you are enabling them to treat you like garbage. Then it's your fault you are *still* in that situation.

Ok you have no understanding of how people cope with abusive situations. First of all, these actors were probably under contract and couldn’t leave the second an abusive situation started and they probably were worried they wouldn’t work again if they just left. They are trying to maintain their careers and unfortunately certain industries aren’t forgiving if you don’t get a long with certain people. Second, fuck you for saying it’s abuse victims fault for staying in abusive situations. Abusive situations can mentally breakdown a person and where it takes a lot of strength and support to leave an abusive spouse or an abuser can hold some over their head in order to make them comply with the abusers. It’s not as cut and dry as you stupidly think it is and I hope you didn’t have a spouse if this is your attitude towards abusive situations.

    • @Abstract852
      @Abstract852 3 года назад +3

"If the situation is that bad, why would you continue to work there?"
Because they've signed a 7 year contract, breaking that contract could see them taken through the court system and bankrupt them should the studio/network (ie the who the contract is with) decide to sue them for breach of contract and damages.
"It apparently wasn't so toxic that she also signed up to do Angel."
Likely the same contract as the Buffy one extended into Angel, tv contracts usually have a clause related to the studio/network (it's more flexible that way in cases of spin off's and prevents pay negotiations). Note even the Angel show ended after David had done 7 years (2 on buffy, 5 on angel).
