Oh that's neat!!! Never thought of using a tote... I was going to use free milk crates when we need to replace ours! Thanks for the tips SoilBrotha we appreciate you 🙏🏾
I use to use milk crates buy I could never keep bedding in them for long. I use to do this way years ago and now it’s time to bring it on back. Sometimes the simpler things are the better.
Where do you get the free milk crates from?
@@spoonnwithsunshinehomestead Dollar Tree 🤣 but we put a piece of wood or something in the bottom that's easy to clean. Hope you had a wonderful day SoilSista 🥰
You can check with Starbucks or grocery stores for free milk crates. I've seen piles upon piles by the dumpster at our local starbucks. I put cardboard flats cut to fit in my milk crates. When I change liter in nest, I just use the other half for easy changing. I use straw or hay in my nesting boxes. I've used pine shavings also but I have to buy the bales anyway for other things so I've just been using it. Just use something natural. Hens really arent picky and you only need one or two boxes. I have 12 hens, they all use the same box even though I have 4 boxes.
@@simplygardening1936 Ha... Same here SoilSista, my girls all use the same box sometimes I see 2-3 of them trying to squeeze in the same box... So funny. Thanks for sharing your tips, we appreciate you 🙏🏾
Nice. The girls are lined up to try out their new furniture. Happy season chicks. Personally I been eating cloned chicken from the market. That what I call manufacturer meat. I tell my grands the children we are growing up is like you raising yours. Market chicken doesn't have the nutrients and enough healthy blood running through their veins. They get no sun and are caged without any exercise and the meat taste tired. Your chickens always look happy and they socialize. I would like to eat one. How much so you sell for?
Now and then I treat myself to a coby steak but can afford it as often as I like. But the way they are raised and breed makes a huge difference. Good food keeps you healthy and digestive system intact. I noticed in you videos that lady lead and you have healthy looking skin. Yard work alone for me even when wearing gloves, my hand get very dry. Yall hands get alot of closeups and they always look soft. Not only do you guys represent a healthy survival lifestyle, yall are natural models for your productions.
I'm always encouraged. I've eaten most of what I have grown and they savings help me purchase better meats I enjoy. Keep up the good work.
Your tutorials are excellent and easy, they help me feel confident in doing your DIYs. Thanks
Don’t worry my sister. I got you.
You got some pretty girls Lead. That's a nice setup too. You can tell warm weather is here by the egg production. All the homesteaders has an abundance of them. Anyway, that's a smart idea on the nesting boxes. Love ya man and ms.Lead too♥️
I did that in my coop this past summer works great. I placed a small brick inside to one side of the box to hold it in place, so the chickens wont knock it around. I use old dry hay for the inside.
The totes clean up real easy.
Hay is better than shaving for egg laying hens as hens eat the hay too, wood shavings are good for clean eggs for breeding hens.
Resourcefulness at its finest! These ideas are getting more and more important in today's world! You got our attention!
Brother Lead 73 and Family, I just love looking at your chicken videos. May you continue to be blessed by The Most High YAH.
I raise chickens also I have 24 total 3 are roosters.
Great seeing new ideas.
Wow. The ladies have been busy.... Wore down the speaker box! But, new comfy bedding.... might just get you more eggs!
😂😂😉😂
Thank you for this video. I also loved hearing the silence of just your hens talking. I despise music played on all those farm shows. I like to hear the farm and the animals
Learn something new everyday.
Wow a simple video, very calming. No prep, calming, relaxing and stay blessed
Nice pen. I use black 5 gallon buckets for nesting boxes. I have 9 hens and 4 nesting buckets and the hens all want to use the same bucket.
🤣😂🤣 that’s why I only give them 1-3 boxes no matter how many birds I have. It’s just a waste to have lots of boxes. They all fight over only 2 or three of them. Heck! They would rather lay the eggs on the ground before the go to another empty box 🤣😂🤣
@@leadfarmer73 wow that’s crazy lol why would they not want their own boxes lol.
Haha didn’t know they did that. Wonder why they do that?
Thanks for sharing this! Getting chickens in Spring!
Love you're video no playin around straight to the point then you fast around, and I am enjoying your birds.
I hate when ppl will go for 10 to 30 mins b4 they ever talk about what their video is about
That's funny! They were waiting in line! 😀
That's great and they like it too! Your chickens are Beautiful!🤗❤
awe..so love your care for your FAM!!! You and your wife are the BEST!! Thank you.
I like the ride😄😄. Nice gathering of the eggs. Genius idea of making the nesting bed. Take care and be safe. Thank you sir Lead.
What's up Brother Lead ... This is a really cool do-it-yourself project...
Girls checking out the new nest
Thank you
Much respect
I didn't have time and wasn't sure when my hens would start laying and got a box from Sam's that is used for produce - it has a waxy film on it so if it gets wet, it still holds it's form - put some dry straw and it just about fit in the area the hens sleep. They all take turns and are happy and satisfied, based on their egg production and the fact they all lay in the same box. I've had the same box for several months and when I go to Sam's I can get another couple boxes but they have held up really well and the only thing I bought was the straw and I didn't have to build anything :)
Dude, LOVING your channel… thank you for all the fun and knowledge!!!!
Beautiful 🐓 chickens.
WOOHOO! I have been using totes for nesting boxes for over ten years. This is really awesome!!! 😁😁🐔
That’s a great idea. Easy to clean up and affordable 👌🏾👌🏾
Super cheap and super easy bro ✊🏽

Heyyy SoilBrotha! Cheap but effective we 💕
Amen to cheap!😂🤣😂🤣🙏🏽
I've been buying books on backyard chicken raising... everything I get my hands on is helpful
Thanks unc lead
Fantastic video thanks and best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Great idea. You got some big healthy birds. Looks like they like the new walk through in the cage. Real Nice setup..
Love it Lead! That is so inexpensive and easy to make. Now if only I can make a coop that easy 🤔
😂😂🤣
I used 16 ft cattle panels bowed and fastened to a 2X6 frame and then covered with 2X4 dog wire using plastic tie straps, no predators have got in. Look up cattle panel chicken coop.
@@dannydenham8141 thank you, I definitely will.
I used a dog kennel that has been in the yard for yrs. Used 3ft high 1in chicken wire around bottom and on top to keep the predators out. Gonna do a top like the one they have at Tractor supply with PVC pipe and a top I have that goes on a gazebo, a tarp should do fine
If you wanted to keep the 2 Holer speaker box, or any wood box, you can add Linoleum glued to bottom. Easy clean, sanitizer on it and wipe.
Lead all sir breakfast lunch and dinner. Good looking eggs can't wait to have some chickens love what you do thanks you the truth. Now I got a taste for some boil eggs w s&p!
Excellent video- husband and I are going to use this exact method! Thanks Lead
...We have 2, 1 year old girls (hens) and started out with 1 tote. Our dominate hen does not always share well, so I added a second tote (just in case) ... many times I have witnessed them sit side by side (in that original tote) at the same time while laying! Neither have laid in the second tote. Cute. Cute. :)
I like it!
Omg look at all those beautiful 💕eggs ! In with the new hotness 😂 lol
😂😂🤣
good idea thank you lead
You are so welcome.
Be checking out some totes...really like the easy clean aspect
Mr. Lead, that ease of keeping clean is so important in making people want to care for their animals. The smell of a henhouse can be a real turn-off. I can tell from those coos your flock makes that you keep yours happy and calm.
I use cat carriers. Ppl toss them. My neighbor used the containers. They worked great. 🙂
I've used that same tote x3 for the last two years. As I've grew my flock I just updated to garden crates because they were about the same length. Plus I can easily see if a snake was in crate compared to tote. In summer I always seem to have one or two sitting behind a hen in the tote that I've had to kill.
Exactly! This makes it super easy when Looking for snakes before you put your hand in there.👍🏽
Yikes! I do not like snakes
@@leadfarmer73 Yes it does!
Brother! I'm up here in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and I am scared to death that my chickens would definitely die during these cold winters. I lived in GA before retiring, and it seemed like ALL my friends had (at least) three chickens. One of my friends (in particular) only had four hens, and they laid more eggs in a week than he knew what to do with, so he gave them to me and they were better than any store bought eggs I've ever tasted. He accused my dog of killing one of his hens one time, but come to find out it was a fox that was the culprit.
These lay boxes are THE TRUTH though! I might give it a go, and just make sure that I go with an actual insulated coop with wire incased run. Maybe six chickens just to start out with. I've only been back to the United States after retiring from the Marine Corps and working overseas since 2016. I've always told my parents, I WANT CHICKENS, lol. They were from AL and AK and taught me about raising chickens, but they were in the south when they did it. They taught me about bruding chicks, biddy's, meat birds, egg layers, etc. They're favorite was the Rhode Island Red, and when you mentioned that in your previous live, I was like, "YUP"!
They have both gone on to glory since then though, but I really want to do this and I'm gonna do it!
Thanks Brother Lead! I've been watching you for years. I understand both the "Lead" part and the "Prep" part.
This is awesome! I love what you've done with the $5 container. I was needing to replace mine soon
GREAT idea! Thank you for sharing!
Twenty something years ago, I resorted to using a bigger plastic tote as a temporary doghouse. It worked very well and I've used them for other animals as well as gardening. I love the way you think!
Going to making one for my rabbit, wonderful idea, thanks😊
I like it and so do the chickens 😆
That's awesome lead!
Thank you my beautiful sister!❤️❤️❤️ I miss y’all so much❤️
@@leadfarmer73 thanks lead, work is getting a little crazy with the mandatory OT. Hopping to be making vidoe soon 🙂
I'm in school today thx sir
Now that is a wonderful idea! Thanks so much for sharing! Looks nice & neat, and easy to make! Awesome. Have a bless day and greetings from central Florida.
Ok nice straight to the point thanks
Thanks for the idea. I like that cage set-up. I'm gonna use a dog kennel and build a wood winter box right next to it. Lumber is 8 bucks for a 2x4 here on Long Island. I subscribed. I'm gonna check out your kombucha video.
Hello Lead Farmer 73 I love that chicken coop it's nice and spacious lots of room different compartments.
Excellent idea 👍
Excellent, thank you!
Thank you Lead!
You are so very welcome
Thanks for all the info
Excellent! I have a storage tub nest box. The entry hole is square and on the narrow side. I need to add ventilation. I placed extra straw on top and they made a nest of that. Some straw fell on the floor next to the box. I get eggs in all three “nests”.
Brilliant idea! 💜💜💜 I used Milk crates turned on their sides for nesting boxes when I had Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds. I like this idea better but I don’t have any Livestock now. 🤟🏽 AuntieEllen
Awesome job Mr Lead👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💚💚💚🌱🌱🌱🐓🐓🐓🇬🇧
Thank you so much
Fabulous. I’m doing this !
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Hey! I don't know if you're interested but there's a huge, nice 8x20 chicken coop on Craigslist for free. It's in Charleston though. It would definitely need taken apart. I have to many birds for it.
Excellent!!!! So excited to make my new nesting boxes. Thank you❤️
It’s so easy that it hurts 🤣😂
Uncle... for some of us that's interested in chicken raising ... I'd deeply appreciate a full video on just u videoing your coop for at least an str8 hour so we can see how they interact with other ... haven't found that video yet
I've got a million questions ... hope I don't talk your ear off in class 😍
That’s a good idea
Great idea, thank you!
Wow this is great!,thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
Great idea! Thank you Lead.
Love this idea
Great idea. End of a season, sales happen!
Wow! That's neat!
This is such a good idea. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Lead and fam!! I am wanting to raise chickens but I don't know how to start. I know for a fact that the ladies turn up the soil 🤣🤣 I want to get a couple to start (only girls exclusively for laying). Can you do a video for people who are new to chickens?
We are doing a chicken class in the first weeks of April
@@leadfarmer73 Ok 👌 I'll be here for it!! Guava!! I'm watching the Raising Chickens playlist now 😁☺️
That’s so neat! I love the ideal and it looks like the chickens like it too!
They love it. They payed that one egg in there immediately
Hey Lead.
I've been using this container box nesting box method for almost 3 years. It started out as stray cat housing during winter. I just wanted them to have an inexpensive shelter to keep them out of the elements. After I got chickens they instantly became quick and easy nesting boxes which we use to this day. I'd recommend placing the entry hole towards the side so that it's dark and secluded enough for them. Also, smaller or air holes or more a little further up. They do get stuffy in summer.
great idea!
Great idea I will use totes for my nesting boxes thank you ❤
Love ya too 😊! Thanks for the advice !!!
Thank you sir!
Now that was right on time. I was just looking at some trying to decide which ones to buy..
They cost a fortune. I have never to this very day purchased one. The prices on them are ridiculous🤣😂
Nice and Easy. Great video.
Awesome thanks for sharing
they had to check it out because they are sooo nosey! Good job
🤣😂🤣 yes they are!
I think they love it! ❤️
Great Idea, Thanks
I like it right now I'm using milk crates but milk crates aren't big enough for like golden comets or buff orpingtons or some of the larger breeds what we've got are white leghorns which aren't very big and then get in the the milk crates pretty easy.
We've also got six of the milk crates in the coop and 10 chickens in all 10 seem to use two of the nest boxes LOL the others never get used.
Thank you!
You are welcome
I love this idea much cleaner
Wow that alot of eggs
Phenomenal. Great Job Lead.
Thank you Allen
Those some big healthy chickens 🐓. What you feel them? I see everybody else with under fed chickens 🐓
Nice and fun
It really only takes about 5 minutes tops from start to finish.
They took to it pretty quick
