      You can check with Starbucks or grocery stores for free milk crates. I've seen piles upon piles by the dumpster at our local starbucks. I put cardboard flats cut to fit in my milk crates. When I change liter in nest, I just use the other half for easy changing. I use straw or hay in my nesting boxes. I've used pine shavings also but I have to buy the bales anyway for other things so I've just been using it. Just use something natural. Hens really arent picky and you only need one or two boxes. I have 12 hens, they all use the same box even though I have 4 boxes.

    Nice. The girls are lined up to try out their new furniture. Happy season chicks. Personally I been eating cloned chicken from the market. That what I call manufacturer meat. I tell my grands the children we are growing up is like you raising yours. Market chicken doesn't have the nutrients and enough healthy blood running through their veins. They get no sun and are caged without any exercise and the meat taste tired. Your chickens always look happy and they socialize. I would like to eat one. How much so you sell for?
    Now and then I treat myself to a coby steak but can afford it as often as I like. But the way they are raised and breed makes a huge difference. Good food keeps you healthy and digestive system intact. I noticed in you videos that lady lead and you have healthy looking skin. Yard work alone for me even when wearing gloves, my hand get very dry. Yall hands get alot of closeups and they always look soft. Not only do you guys represent a healthy survival lifestyle, yall are natural models for your productions.
    I'm always encouraged. I've eaten most of what I have grown and they savings help me purchase better meats I enjoy. Keep up the good work.

    I did that in my coop this past summer works great. I placed a small brick inside to one side of the box to hold it in place, so the chickens wont knock it around. I use old dry hay for the inside.
    The totes clean up real easy.

    • @Seriouslydave
      @Seriouslydave 2 года назад +1

      Hay is better than shaving for egg laying hens as hens eat the hay too, wood shavings are good for clean eggs for breeding hens.

    I didn't have time and wasn't sure when my hens would start laying and got a box from Sam's that is used for produce - it has a waxy film on it so if it gets wet, it still holds it's form - put some dry straw and it just about fit in the area the hens sleep. They all take turns and are happy and satisfied, based on their egg production and the fact they all lay in the same box. I've had the same box for several months and when I go to Sam's I can get another couple boxes but they have held up really well and the only thing I bought was the straw and I didn't have to build anything :)

    Brother! I'm up here in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and I am scared to death that my chickens would definitely die during these cold winters. I lived in GA before retiring, and it seemed like ALL my friends had (at least) three chickens. One of my friends (in particular) only had four hens, and they laid more eggs in a week than he knew what to do with, so he gave them to me and they were better than any store bought eggs I've ever tasted. He accused my dog of killing one of his hens one time, but come to find out it was a fox that was the culprit.
    These lay boxes are THE TRUTH though! I might give it a go, and just make sure that I go with an actual insulated coop with wire incased run. Maybe six chickens just to start out with. I've only been back to the United States after retiring from the Marine Corps and working overseas since 2016. I've always told my parents, I WANT CHICKENS, lol. They were from AL and AK and taught me about raising chickens, but they were in the south when they did it. They taught me about bruding chicks, biddy's, meat birds, egg layers, etc. They're favorite was the Rhode Island Red, and when you mentioned that in your previous live, I was like, "YUP"!
    They have both gone on to glory since then though, but I really want to do this and I'm gonna do it!
    Thanks Brother Lead! I've been watching you for years. I understand both the "Lead" part and the "Prep" part.

    Hey Lead.
    I've been using this container box nesting box method for almost 3 years. It started out as stray cat housing during winter. I just wanted them to have an inexpensive shelter to keep them out of the elements. After I got chickens they instantly became quick and easy nesting boxes which we use to this day. I'd recommend placing the entry hole towards the side so that it's dark and secluded enough for them. Also, smaller or air holes or more a little further up. They do get stuffy in summer.
