  • My veiwer "390merc 66" told me about this place. THANK YOU👍👍👍!!!
Never knew it was here on SR 924 Frackville, Pa. and it outlasted its predecessing bridge next to it that was torn down in the 1990's!
Used to be part of the Mahanoy Plane Incline Railroad.
    Built in 1911.
Found the thumbnail pic 'building the new bridge' after I posted this vid.
1956 Ford Fairlane at Miller's Sunoco, Oak St. (SR924) Frackville, Pa.
The pipe(s) were used to load trucks from the rail cars with fertilizer to make explosives for the surface mining operations after they retired this tunnel.[Info from D. Hoffman, local resident of Frackville]

Enjoyed your explore of a little of Frackville history. I was born in Bloomsburg, but in 1968 dad got a job with E I DuPont's Seaford nylon production facility, the world's first nylon plant. A couple times a year, we would pass this tunnel and under the railroad bridge until it was removed. Everytime we headed north past this tunnel as a child, i would marvel at the fact that it was constructed the same year my dad's father was born. In those early years for me, that wasn't filled in, that only occurred upon the removal of the adjacent bridge. I'm a huge railroad fan. On my families home farm, the hoghouse and butcher house were built from huge railroad tressel timbers removed from the Mainville tressel in the 1920s, when the Reading went to solid fill to carry heavier coal loads. Had a great-great uncle that was a section crew member that worked for the Reading Railroad-Catawissa Branch. Probably how my family got tressel timbers to build hoghouse and butcher house. Family farm dates from about 1850s.

We know Franny's Fairlane and the tunnel. That tunnel, if shored up would make a great bar and grille. Lots of parking space.

Many years ago, back in the early '80's, I once walked along the railroad from Girardville to Maizeville then up the old road to Frackville. At that time the old Reading RR bridge to the head of Mahanoy Plane was still there. I did look around a bit west of the bridge but I could not find much of interest.

Near that was a train bridge perhaps that is why that tunnel was made.

As you were leaving Frackville, (where you were), there was a 'newer' tunnel that spanned the highway that trains ran over. At the red light coming into town from that tunnel, turn left and you will pass through what used be be another small bridge that the RR ran over. East Spring street. The tunnel over Gold Star Highway was also taken down as the RR no longer used it. If you look on Google maps and do a street view you can see it. (The walls).
