I saw him with Diana Krall at a jazz festival in the 90s that I played with a local youth jazz ensemble - Russell blew us away and absolutely stole the show! We got to meet him that day too and he was kind and encouraging. What a brilliant player and human!

Russell was an extraordinary individual and very humble. My first meeting with him was in the lunch room at Monroe High School my junior year. I was reading an issue of Guitar Player magazine and he sat down at my table, and asked if he could read it. Every conversation we had afterwards was on guitars and music. We had a talent show at school later on, and he performed last. He crushed it with his imitation and rendition of George Bensons This Masquerade. Our last conversation was on Messenger and I have read it many times today. Rest easy old friend

I saw him with Dianna Krall at the Algonquin Hotel in NYC in the 90’s and he absolutely stole the show. You knew when he played he was doing what he wanted to do. His ideas and melodic lines were beautiful. Ron Carter the greatest bass player in history was using Russell, Ron could have had anybody in the world but he chose Russell, that right there shows how great he was. This is a huge blow to the music world and he will be missed, you don’t realize how great he was until he’s gone. Charley Christian, Wes, George Benson, Russell was right up there with the masters.

Soo nice/gracious of you to do this Chase, thank you. I like the Black Butterfly album, in particular his rendition of Say A Little Prayer (Burt Bacharach). I like his composition: Mugshot performed live at Smoke....he is doing some "road less travelled stuff" on that tune. Sad, very sad, may he Rest In Peace. Been playing his version of Road Song by Wes as played at Emmet's. I play jazz guitar.

In the 1980s, When I was asst. Mgr at Bojangles in Albany, Georgia, Russell was one of my cooks.
He was already a great guitarist then and aspired to make jazz music his way of life.
I play bass and sat in on some jam sessions with him at the Albany's House of Blues.
We corresponded a few times over the years.

Thanks very much for doing this, Chase. I saw Russell twice live, once in Chicago, where he was the leader of a small group, once in Marciac, France, as part of a great guitars quartet, I think it was Russell, Pat Martino, Mark Whitfield, and Chuck Loeb. I did not really appreciate what a master he was until watching this tribute, though. I did not know he could play as fast as he does on the Benny Green track, for example. And I never heard him play all those harmonics before. I had heard him play with Diana Krall on TV. I've seen him doing a clinic at some school in the southI'll be digging into him on Spotify now. I really liked that first track from "Live at the Jazz Standard," kind of a combination of country and smooth jazz that was very unusual, it had kind of a Metheny feel. He could play so many styles so well! The tune with Billy Taylor was very cool, too. RIP.

Well of course not but as one who too often repeats a solo line i will repeat my "ty for this".
had to take considerable time 'n effort on your part ...but it wasn't painful on the ears and certainly highlights some wonderful work that I, and perhaps some others hadn't heard.
