Eva Cassidy had such a tragic life story. She had little to no success during her lifetime, the only music label she found went bankrupt, she was poor, she had to scramble up money by doing many sidelines, and on top of it all, this incredible talent was robbed of her life way too early at the age of 33. Only postmortem she got the recognition she deserved. Life's unfair at times. Fortunately, we can still listen to this magnificent recordings of this wonderful soul today. My absolute favourite song by her is "Autumn Leaves", you can't miss that, the chords she chose there (many major sevenths) combined with the voicings is incredibly beautiful, it's out of this world.
Sadly its the story for a few when thinking about more fame after death. There have been a few cases like it and this one for Eva was such a tragedy. I dont think I have Autumn Leaves on the list so I will make sure that is added :)
But please, much of her life was very happy, she lived life on her own terms, and left a great deal of recorded music (check out ALL her stuff!), so as tragic as her too early death was, I don't believe her life was tragic.

Eva’s dynamics and phrasing are very different from the original but I’ve always thought she got much more honest emotion out of the song. She was simply superb. RIP
Sting famously said his 'fields of gold' sung by her is how he wanted it to be heared
One of the best things I've ever heard. Notably more melancholy than Judy Garland's version in the Wizard of Oz but a thing of pure beauty. If I recall correctly, she didn't make it another year past this performance. RIP Eva.
Such a shame that we lost such an incredible artist so young. Her legacy will live on but still a sad and tragic loss.

Agreed, I recently heard Katrina Velarde singing a Motown version of this song that did not appeal to me at all. This is how is should always be sung.

Thanks Daz for doing this. Yes she died in 1996 at only 33, from melanoma, about 9 months after this performance. This was one of 12 songs recorded at the Blues Alley Lounge in Washington, her home area. These were some of the only videos ever captured of her. Black and White. There are quite a few audio only recordings also.
Judy Garland's original is a classic standard. No singer could touch it, till Eva. Either pays respect to the original but she changed it up in her own unique style that is haunting and emotional in a way that Judy Garlands is not.
I had requested also Fields of Gold. That was recorded by Eva and separately by Angelina Jordan recently. But the most amazing is the duet mash up of Eva and Angelina singing this together! That is what you should react to next. Beyond that here are a few of my favorites.

Thanks Daz. She was an angel taken too soon, and many Grammys were likely in her future. The most extraordinary vocals and guitar skills I've ever heard.
She was taken to young and if this performance is anything to go by I am going to really enjoy watching a lot more from her. There are already a few on that list that have got me excited so looking forward to doing more Eva Cassidy on the channel.

I never thought I would ever prefer anyone's version more than the original by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz but I now prefer Eva's version.
Judy Garland's version will always hold a special place for me because of the history of the song with some of my loved ones but this version was amazingly beautiful. I loved every second of it.

This is exactly how this song should be sung.
Eva is one of my favorite singers, one of the truly great singers of all time! I would say she has just been supplanted as my very favorite by So Hyang. Eva was incredible. I nearly fell out of my chair the first time I heard her around the turn of the century. She was a really fine guitarist as well. Her ability to strike the heart dead on is unparalleled. This song reached either number one or two in the UK in the late nineties not long after she passed away of melanoma. She owned every cover song she has ever performed. Like So Hyang, she never cared to be famous and either turned down record deals or was not signed because she refused to be cut like the other cookies. One of a kind, a brilliant, brilliant singer. Her versions of 'Fields Of Gold', 'Autumn Leaves', 'Songbird', 'Tall Trees In Georgia' (live), and so, so many more are absolutely beautiful! She was suffering from a cold when this was recorded. I knew the name but wasnt too aware of her music before doing this and this one blew me away. It was so beautifully performed, it is a song that will tug on the heart strings of most and that includes me. I plan on doing a lot more Eva reactions on this channel so thank you for all the suggestions. Fields Of Gold will be my next reaction.

That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
This was beautiful from Eva and it is very true what you say. Even though she had been taken long before he time she leaves a musical legacy behind that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
@@Dazza010 It is sad that she was never able to be rewarded here, but her music has sold more than 10,000,000 since her death, and therefore, a legacy. Her family has been cared for because of the little she was able to get out there (according to normal music production standards) ... but the recording companies have been proven so very wrong with trying to shape and sculpt her into what they wanted. She wouldn't have it because she knew her calling. Knowing who you are, what you are here for and standing by it is mandatory now.
Planet Earth needs more like Eva if we are ever going to shape a peaceful and loving culture. She allowed God to shape and teach her for the choir up there. We'll hear her again.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time ! Daz just for your info after her passing her songs re- emerged and she became a huge success in the UK ! The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies! Sadly she was not too well known at all in America ! Thanks to you guys she finally got the recognition she so richly deserved ! Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton were among her new found fans in the UK ! Daz I would suggest her rendition of "Fields of Gold " that is beautifully sung and "Songbird " a song that went straight to Number 1 in the UK in 2001 ! Just amazing recognition by the UK music scene.on what a talented artist Eva Cassidy was even though she had been gone for many years ! Personally I want to thank you from the bottom of my head for bringing this angel down to earth to sing for us again ! It took a while to get round to this one but it kind of came at a perfect time. I recently listened to this song being covered in a Motown version. it was the first time I had heard it sung that way and I didnt like it. This is how the song should be sung and Eva done this one incredible justice. Its a shame that its not until passing that your name starts to get more recognition, it has happened a few times over the years with certain artists but one thing is for sure is that I loved her voice and you can expect to see a lot more Eva Cassidy on this channel. I have added Field Of Gold and Songbird to my list and will find plenty more to do :)

Nice reaction! This recording was done in January 1996. In June of that year Eva was diagnosed with metastasized melanoma and she died in November. She was really only known in the Washington DC area when she passed. Her first solo album, Songbird, was released after her death. It wasn't until two years later, when a couple of DJs in England played her recordings of Over the Rainbow and Fields of Gold on the radio and TV, that she really began to be noticed. Since then, her albums have sold over 10 million copies. I first learned of her in 2000, when NPR included her version of Over the Rainbow in a list of the top 100 recordings of the 20th century. I have loved her ever since. It was only last year that I learned that a friend of hers had recorded this performance at Blues Alley on the night they were recording her live album. As far as I know, the 13 songs on that video are the only full videos we have of her performing live. I am so grateful to get to see her perform.

Very sad that she never got her recognition while she was alive. She had a voice that everyone should have listened to at least once in their lifetime. Imo her covers are better than the originals. My favourite is Fields Of Gold!

Sad, but almost prophetically and poetically fantastic that Eva is bursting out to enormous fame finally through the many reaction videos that are coming out 28 years after her tragic death from cancer. I believe that is specifically how and why she was capable of making the song totally her own.
There are just a few performances that have ever done justice to the song.
1. JUDY GARLAND IN 1939 I believe
2. Eva Cassidy in 1996
3. Tommy Emmanuel in recent years, not sure exactly when.
A. Judy sang it wonderfully
B.Eva sang it and played it on guitar in my opinion, the greatest interpretation of the song ever
C. Tommy, maybe the greatest guitar solo of the song ever recorded to emphesize Judy's performance style
I would say that Eva Cassidy's performance is by far the best vocal and guitar accompaniment ever done.
Where Tommy is the only performer still alive, I would love for him to attempt a re-arrangement of Eva's version on his guitar. I wouldn't expect it to eclipse Eva's performance, but it would probably add another one right up there with his version that pays homage to Judy's performance.
Get yourself a Guitar. Local pawn shop. A neighbor that doesn't want their guitar anymore. Spend 20 minutes a day. You will be amazed how quickly you pick it up!~

I am not really a fan of mashups but I do plan on listening to both of them individually.
Just have a guitar on a stand not in a case around where you can always see it and when you have a spare 5 minutes just pick it up and play around with it.
I disagree about the version with Angelina Jordan. This is Evas' interpretation and is more emotional and more intimate sung by her and her wonderful guitar playing. Autumn leaves is my next favorite of hers.
It is annoying to have someone to interrupt more than once.
