That ending gets me every time, and I've heard this one many times. Her voice is just so magnificent that we often forget that is her playing guitar, and that is all the accompaniment that is going on, and yet, more powerful than any band with drums, bass and 100 watt marshalls! No orchestra needed. Live no less. Now and then God gives us a gift, and we are blessed. I think He called her home early because He wanted to hear her sing too!

  • @ptrlxc
    @ptrlxc 3 года назад +215

She took an iconic song and made it her own. Mick Fleetwood was trying to help her get recorded (because at this time she didn’t have a record deal yet: it was her friends, family, and fans created what music was recorded). She wasn’t going to take the first record deal because the record companies tried to slot her into a category, which she felt confined. She wanted to play songs that she pour her heart and soul in it, so she defied category: Mick Fleetwood admired her integrity. Then she got cancer and died shortly after, with no record deal. Can you imagine what she would sound like in a professional studio, allowed to play her songs her way, and what more songs she could’ve covered? An angel voice, and a guitar playing to match that voice.

Karen Carpenter had a strong beautiful voice, and she deserved a lot more accolades than she received, but she wasn’t a soulful jazz singer. And, as I know, she never even attempted a jazz arrangement. If Eva would have lived longer, she would have been on the list of best female vocalists ever, with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sara Vaughan, Nina Simone, and the rest.

@@jeffstumpf9129 Yes, but a lot of that is Richard. He held tight reins on The Carpenters' sound and to some degree, Karen. She made a breakout album when he was hospitalized at some point. When he got out of the hospital and heard it, he hated it and refused to allow it to be released. It was her first attempt to do something on her own and experiment with other sounds and styles. If she had lived longer, who knows what else she would have done besides The Carpenters. He finally allowed it to be released after she died. I, personally, would have loved to hear her do an album of standards. Btw, I read the Ella Fitzgerald loved Karen's voice, had all The Carpenters' albums and even sang with Karen on at least one occasion.
I agree that Eva Cassidy would have been up there with the great female voices, though not all of the best female vocalists have to be soulful jazz singers. Judy Garland was one of the greatest female voices and she wasn't a jazz singer, same for Patti LaPone,, Whitney Houston and a lot of others.

She gave the definition of unconditional love with her voice, guitar and physical moves.
That is what all of humanity wants. Real love. Even the most hardened criminal ever wants real love. The kind that loves you for who you are and not what they want you to be. That is what I feel everytime I hear this lady's legacy song. All masterpieces have that. From the best painters, to the best actors to the best dancers. That is why humanity loves Eva. RIP.

Eva didn't actually want to do this recording because she was still
getting over a cold and was worried her voice wouldn't stand up.
You can actually hear a slight break off at the end of a few lines
BUT she had THE most perfect voice in my opinion, with perfect control.
perfect pitch, beautiful vibrato and an emotional connection with
the song that reached out and grabbed listeners hearts like no
one else was capable of . Sadly, sadly missed by millions. The world
would be a much better place if she was still around!

She made me able to feel, truly, there was and is, a safe place for those we love, somewhere over the rainbow, when autumn leaves do fall. This is my absolute favourite version of this song. I remember listening to it on repeat for hours on an international flight once. The tragedy is that music executives didn’t think she deserved to be heard until after she passed. They sure got that wrong.

IMO Eva's best version of this song is on the Songbird album. She has a pretty bad cold on the night she recorded this album (Live at Blues Alley) and she had to reign in her voice a bit to keep it from cracking.

The saddest part of seeing this video, is she was sick with the early stages of cancer, and didn't know it! I saw an interview with her Mother and Father, and it was heart wrenching when her Mother pushed Eva pretty hard to do those heavy duty Chemo treatments, for a few months. She said Eva got so sick from them, and turned out they didn't help. Eva also 2 or 3 weeks before passing, went to her own party held by all her close friends and family. She came in very frail, with a cane, and still went up and sang 3 or 4 songs. The last song she sang was her personal favorite..."What a Wonderful World" which was made famous by the Great Louis Armstrong.

Actually, this performance was captured in January of 1966 & Eva did not know until June that she has metastatic melanoma. She passed in November of 1966, far too soon. She is healthy and whole in heaven and no doubt sings with the heavenly choirs. ❤🙏🏻😇

@@melodyannherringmcneely7842 Yes, the person wrote she was sick with the early stages of cancer but "didn't know it!". Hopefully I am not missing some insight you want to share.
While Eva got her mole checked out and treated, the doctor's saying the procedure was successful and she should live a long life, made her feel that doing the recommended follow ups was not necessary. Tragic and her family wants people not to make the same mistake!

@@hillsane9262 I actually had a friend who had a mole on her leg removed and her doctor thought that he had removed all that needed to be removed and she would be ok. We had gotten pregnant at the same time and delivered our two bundles of joy very close together. I didn’t have cancer but my sister, at 18, had ovarian cancer. Then, my Mother was diagnosed with breast cancer while I was pregnant & her Drs pressured me to have a hysterectomy and a bilateral mastectomy after I had my baby, to lessen my chances of getting cancer. I refused right then but I soon had a hysterectomy because I had endometriosis. My friend who had gotten her mole removed suddenly had cancer in her blood vessels & died. 13 years later, I had to undergo chemo, surgery, different chemo and radiation to kill the breast cancer I had been diagnosed with at the age of 47. I am BlEsSeD to still be here. But I followed my Drs instructions to the letter. I’m sorry that Eva and my friend Kaye thought they were ok by having their moles removed & chemo therapy. It is really tragic for both of their families. 😢💔🎶😢💔🎶
