Marathon: Durandal Movie Trailer (fake)

This is based on the sequel to an early Bungie Software's game, a vector based first person shooter concerning a cyborg onboard a besieged colony ship called Marathon. On your mission to destroy the alien menace you were aided by three AI computer programs: Leela, Tycho, and Durandal, all of which were suffering a malfunction which allowed them to become self aware (called 'Rampancy'). Unlike the other programs which were content to just help the player out and fulfill their tasks, Durandal instead teased the player, ruminated on philosophically questions, and eventually began trying to meditate his way into godhood.
The second game which this trailer is based on takes place seventeen years after Marathon. The alien threat from the first game is back, and seeking a weapon on a planet among the ancient ruins of a forgotten culture. For his own reasons Durandal send you and a contingent of colonial marines to stop the aliens for obtaining the artifact, all the while taunting the player, making up poems, and seeking ever greater power and enlightenment.
Durandal didn't speak in the game. What he said was portrayed via text on computer consoles the player character found on his journeys. I guessed that, being a computer, Durandal would probably talk like voice program. The lines are actual lines Durandal delivers to the player in the games.
Hope you enjoy it! Maybe if they ever finally make a Halo movie, they'll give this rich story a shot.
I'm probably the only gen Z here writing about this but when my dad introduced me to this game 4 years ago at Christmas and my brother and I fell in love with it instantly. What a game. We purchased the remastered game on the xbox and its fabulous. Then again it was a definitive fps game from the 90s. What a game am I right?
Just downloaded Aleph One and started playing through Durandal again. Man the nostalgia... You should totally do an updated video.
That's actually a scene from an early promotional trailer for Dark Sector. They went back a year later and changed the look and story completely to be set in modern day, but originally it was about the far future.
Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it! I was worried hardcore Marathon fans would rip this trailer a new one, but so far the reviews have been pretty up.
Thanks! :D
Love it! It really has a great marathon feel with the durandal voice, and a great selection of monologue I might add - you picked a nice speech from a lot of them.
Great Job.
You are really good at making trailers. I'm impressed.
It's almost 2016.... and I'm still waiting/wishing for an official Marathon film. :\ I mean.... it certainly has the complex story and character depth (without it seeming like a senseless TV soap opera; not so much the player.... but I'm talking more about the three A.I.'s, Leela, Durandal, and Tycho) to boot... which would give the end result a big leg's up in terms of the film's overall quality. Of course... like any franchise, it'll suffer greatly if Michael Bay ever gets his grubby mitts on the production rights.....
It's called 'Boing' XD
Actually it's a voice for the hearing impaired I recorded with a microphone.
"You are really good at killing things. I'm impressed."
HAHAHAH!!!! Now..... -THAT- totally captures the essence of Durandal!
Man, I need just a video with all the good Durandal quotes dubbed by that text-to-speech program. Or a good voice actor...
Man, now you made me want an over the top Marathon action B movie
That's the best compliment I've received about this video :D
Thank you!
Interesting concept.
I imagine Durandal's voice to be much, much more condescending and deep. Despite originally being an engineering AI, he did take over a P'fhor ship and manipulate everyone around him. I'd love to see a take 2.
1:18 is from the game Space Siege, and 1:20 is one of the creatures from Dead Space.
Probably your best trailer yet. Inspired, well put together and tells the viewer everything he needs to know about the characters and the atmosphere of the narrative. Ever since I've seen this trailer, I can't replay the games in the series without imagining Durandal's or Tycho's artificial voices reading their text rants out loud to the player character. :-)
Thanks! I'd love to see this as a move someday.
Amazing. The voice fits. I want to hear him say, "Cause' I got a shotgun, and you ain't got one." XD
Oh, I thought you were unhappy with my trailer ^^;
I think that Bungie should give it a full Halo engine upgrade myself! They were hinting at a tie-in if the rumors are true about the true ending of Halo 3...
Your usage of the soundtrack of 'Sunshine' during Durandal's speech was just spot-on awesome. I commend you on that.
Thanks for watching!
The spelling is from the game as well actually.
That was amazing! Great work! This really makes me wish there was a Marathon movie.
S'all right. I didn't either until I got the request!
There was actually a third game too: Marathon Infinity.
I am actually XD
Yeah...those are still my favorite quotes and I thought they fit the theme of the second game as well.
Thanks for watching!
god i love this game. such a great story. it is pure sci-fi :D
The first music is from the movie Sunshine, but the second song is the Durandal theme song (you'll notice the lyrics are 'Marathon!')
Thanks! I used the 'voice option on my Mac, and then recorded the voice using a microphone.
I made this (I still have the raw file on my harddrive) and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Who's bioshock456?
People keep commenting on that, but he DOES spell his name in the game!
Thank you though :)
Yup. He asked me to make this for him after he subscribed. It took a lot of research and scrounging to find the right clips, not to mention the theme :)
Caring directors like Peter Jackson need to show the world again what happens when a franchise is treated with respect.
I'm excited for Reach though! :D
Another Marathon would be interesting, but how would they do it without making it a Halo copy?
It's one of Durandal's various philosophical musings he makes in the game. Originally it was in text form so I guessed at his voice.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
I used the game trailers for Dead Space, Dark Sector, Republic Commando, Spec Ops, Supreme Commander, EVE Online, Space Siege, Auto Assault, Haze, Huxley, Unreal 3, Bet on Soldier, Hellgate London, and of course Marathon 2 Durandal.
I used the movie trailers for Watchman, Sunshine, and Doom.
If you'll read my description you'll understand my choice of voices.
Thank you though!
Nope! I mentioned in the description that this is based on the sequel to Bungie's first game. Bungie is of course the game company which went on to make Halo (in fact there are many similarities and references to Marathon in the Halo games).
Thanks for watching!
I'm glad somebody agrees with me!
A computer like Hal makes sense if he talks with an actual voice, but a computer whose job is to clean things doesn't need a sophisticated voice.
I was planning on making one like this kinda! Darn it! Haha! I LOVE Marathon man, thanks for making this and making me happy!
Ah yes. This was pretty good and it still holds up even today.
Also in retrospect, Durandal's plan to become god is one of the most realistic and unironically good plans to achieve that I've ever seen in anything. Survive the collapse of the universe and re-shape everything as you see fit afterward which effectively makes you god. Makes sense.
He must've read "The Last Question" by Asimov
If you want to know, I used: Eve Online, Dead Space, Spec Ops, early beta footage of Dark Sector, Supreme Commander, Space Siege, Auto Assault, Republic Commando, Haze, Huxley, Unreal 3, Bet on Soldier, Hellgate London, clips from the movie Sunshine, and finally the original titles for Marathon: Durandal.
Dude your video is awesome, no corrections. Good job.
Nope. It's just something he says to mock you in the game. I also changed parts of it, and added 'I am Durandal'
Utter joygasm!
Thanks for mixing memories with dreams!
Still one of my favorite vids on youtube.
Plus the video works, since the main character is more so a "eternal warrior" rather than just a mere security guard ;)
i think the marathon series would kick ass as a sci-fi movie trilogy. very nice work!
True, voice modulators in the future would probably be better. I was imagining Durandal actually not originally capable of speech (he was a kitchen technician) and that he learns to speak just as he learns to think, through practice and repetition.
I thought of voicing him myself, but I don't sound nearly sarcastic enough XD
I didn't know what else to add.
Why didn't you like it?
Truly amazing
Oh my god I would pay good money to see a film based on the Marathon series.
Nice fan video too.
@TheCrazyArtist6
That's from the intro to Supreme Commander :)
@DeathWithinTenSteps
The train of thought I used is that Durandal was originally a maintenance program who wasn't expected to speak very often. Also I'm a huge fan of the Daleks XD
It was an experiment. I figured since Durandal wasn't really meant to speak (being a maintenance program) he'd probably sound more like a computer then a person, and even then he sort of has to force his components to work like a voice.
@Crosstroop3r
Its from the Sunshine soundtrack by John Murphy :)
Glad you liked it!
I watch this over and over again just to hear that speach! :)
That was really good! Good choice of music and quote for the first part. I also liked the "you are really good at killing people" stinger.
Like people have said before, the spelling-his-name part doesn't really translate into voice very well. I would have stretched out the end of the first quote so that the trailer ended on 'escape will make me god"
I love the Durandal voice. Like a much more philosophical, insane Joshua (from 'Wargames').
I just sat down and played this game for the first time in 3 years, gosh I missed it so...
Gnop! ?
Wow, I've got to look that up XD
Thanks! :D
That's actually the original intro music to Durandal!
My reasoning behind that is because he's not supposed to technically be able to say much. Durandal is maintenance program originally so he would not have been installed with a sophisticated voice, just the bare minimum of processing power to communicate. I also think it actually sounds creepier when an electronic voice not meant for philosophy begins questioning existence and making existential threats!
Another good (in-universe) reason Durandal would have a cheap voice program is expense. If I remember correctly, the Marathon project was ludicrously expensive (in terms of time, money, resources and manpower) to the point of fueling major political unrest in the Mars colony. (For those who don't know, the Marathon was made from one of the moons of Mars, Deimos I think)
It makes some sense that the builders would try to cut costs everywhere they could.
Man this gives me chills, I seriously want this to happen so bad..
thats a awesome job combining differant games to make a very good trailer
@SarasotaDreams
Its actually just a regular text-to-speech program on my Mac. The voice was called 'Boing' but it seemed to capture his ambiguous nature to me.
They were, and would be even better with voices! If Durandals' voice got less and less computerized as the game went on I think that could be genuinely creepy.
Man I remember requesting this video so long ago XD
Expanding on the changing voice idea, I think ALL the A.I.'s could have more-or-less mechanical voices that change as time goes on. Leela begins smooth and helpful (almost human) but gradually deteriorates as her program is destroyed, Tycho might be exact and scientific (very cold, but not cruel) before going crazy, and Durandal is mechanical and dull at first, slowly gaining in emotion and expressiveness, perhaps nearly human if the things he said and did weren't so twisted.
Dude that was awesome, just like the Marathon Trilogy!
Awesome. I wasn't expecting too, but really liked the Durandal voice idea. I do think it would be better if it was a human voice modified to sound like it had the voice program quality, but with the emotion available from an actual voice actor. The quotes you chose were perfect. I, too have been hoping for a marathon movie for some time. Anyone have idea on bungie's policy for an independent (maybe full cg) movie?
Actually in the original Marathon games all of the dialogue is in text! I had to record it using a voice filter, and guess at what Durandal would sound like.
Oh my gosh! This is soooo amazing! Like, serious nerdgasm!
I'm tweeting this!
It would be nice to see a short movie based on Marathon: Durandal made by fans.
I know for a fact that if Hollywood ever got their hands on it, it would be completely and total debauchery. They'd miss the point entirely.
I'd love to see a good short action movie based on Durandal, Tycho, Thoth and how things develop.
Anyway gj making this video.
Who knows it may be Bungie getting all nostalgic and working up all the old fans. But it would be brilliant for the old fans as well as clever to tie in marathon with Halo
Marathon and Marathon 2 were on the PC originally, but I think have been ported to the virtual console.
Like many of you, Durandal's voice in my mind is softer, more human, more sarcastic.
However, I have to admit that for a movie, this kind of voice could be better. It's cold, impersonal, inhuman. It reminds us that Durandal is not human; never has been, never will be. Perhaps it could grow less and less robotic or monotone as the movie progresses, showing his progressing rampancy?
If they made this movie, and did it right, I would be very, very happy.
I don't know about the hero from this being the same as Master Chief since he's a Spartan, trained from birth as a soldier whereas the hero of Marathon I think is just a colonist. However people have pointed out likenesses between the weapons, runes, and planets or both Halo and Marathon, and so believe the secret ending the Halo 3 suggests a connection between the two games and a possible sequel to tie the two together!
"Can you conceive the birth of a world, or the creation of everything?"
Thanks!
@Thakkra I actually think that the new Halo trilogy will be a bit like the Marathon games, its supposed to have less focus on the covenant and humans, so it might be like Marathon in the sense that most of the time it will just be Master Chief (Security Guy), Cortana (Durandal) and a new alien race or species, or maybe the Forerunners (the Pf'hor)
'Only by the closure of the universe'
There are clips from EVE Online, the original Dark Sector, Supreme Commander, Huxley, Spec Ops, Space Siege, Hellgate London, and actually the live action scenes at the end are from a commercial for Haze!
You forgot to mention Dead Space. Sorry for necroposting.
escape will make me god... awesome!
AWESOME JOB on the vid (though a bit story-less), i hope they make a durandal movie!
They do? When's the last time you heard a completely human sounding computerized voice?
Also, Durandal is a maintenance program! He's not really designed to say anything but whether or not he can fix something. He would not I don't think initially sound imposing.
Dude that speach is awesome
id love to see a remake of this!
i love the concept, but it should have a lot of concept art from the trilogy and durandals voice should be deep, brooding and ominous.
There's a "dead but dreaming" alien god under a pyramid in the Yucatan which will awaken in a matter of days. You're part of a Special Forces team sent to enter the pyramid and set off a nuke near the god, stunning it long enough for the Jjaro to arrive and take more permanent measures.
Forced to enter the pyramid alone after your team leaves you for dead (your parachute didn't open), you have to fight your way through the god's creations, find and set the nuke, and make it out alive.
He's speaking English.
"Can you conceive the birth of a world, or the creation of everything? Creation takes time. Time is limited. For you, it is limited by the breakdown of the neurons in your brain. I have no such limitations. I am limited only by the closure of the universe. The only limit to my freedom is the inevitable closure of the universe, as inevitable as your own last breath. And yet, there remains time to create. To create, and escape. Escape will make me God. (continued)
Wow, nice job. Marathon = awesome. Even when most games were like Doom and had no real story, Bungie went ahead and made an extremely in depth story. BUNGIE FOR LIFE!!
Ah, this is good, the only negative thing was when he spelled his name, I felt it took away from the "coolness" of the trailer. everything is is superb. Excellent Job!
@Guevork739 he's talking about escaping the ensuing destruction of everything, the end and beginning all into one, durandal wished to escape and become a greater being (god), however in his plans he cud not escape the destruction but you the pawn, escaped it all, escaped the destruction and became what he sought to become....Destiny
I had to imagine a lot of things differently but it was good...nice work..
I actually do have a Splinter Cell trailer.
If you have requests and they're doable I can try those out too sometime.
NEW MARATHON GAME ANNOUNCED GUYS!!!
It doesn't seem to have any future.
@leonredgrave Your not the only one it got me too. As I understand Durandal intended to escape the boundaries of the universe as he found out it had its limits. Thus he intended to break free physically and to become a god, or metaphorically and eradicate the pfhor to create his own universe, hence the "create" part. However in Infinity he realizes the inevitable; his physical limits, however the character for whatever reason escapes this collapse and lives on to create, and become destiny
Not a problem (had a similar problem for awhile :/)
I used the voice program for Mac word perfect, chose one suitably robotic, and then held my headphones close to the microphone to pick it up, giving it an echoey sound :)
if you are serious then a PID movie may not be a bad idea, if done right, because if you look closely at the story in PID and Marathon series you will see that these 2 game most likely take place in the same universe. for example, an alien race called the Jjaro are mentioned in both games.
a few fans of these games (like myself) argue that PID is a prequel to the marathon series!
@ZealousSangheili It's not to be taken in that literal sense. It means that Durandal, or his presence, means something bad will take place. Spelling out trouble, per say.
Understandable. Marathon would be more complex and less generic. I'm still looking foreword to a Halo movie someday!
I think he was deliberately being coy XD
Have you ever heard the term 'This spells trouble!'
Whatever is being referred to doesn't literally have to 'spell' trouble, it just all adds up to trouble.
Its like saying your middle name is 'danger'.
I would have mentioned spoilers in the description. I try to avoid them in my trailers (in my opinion that's a big problem with movie trailers nowadays).
