The cleverest thing about Rose is it’s not being too clever and I think deliberately so. Russel hit all the right Saturday night notes in this, even the incidental music has a slight game show vibe about it. He knows he’s up against Ant ‘n’ Dec and is working it. Gx

This was a lovely watch! (Halfway through watching I got a notification that your new animated episode was live, but I didn't want to interrupt enjoying this one!!). I was so with you about this. I had been a fan of Doctor Who from about 1980 and was excited when The TV Movie came back. But by 2005 I had completely left Doctor Who behind and I wasn't even aware that it was coming back!! Then, on the Saturday night premiere of Rose, my girlfriend said to me "Oh, Doctor Who's back tonight. Do you fancy watching it?" - and she was a little nervous about asking as we were quite new as a couple and she didn't know if I would laugh at the idea. I was amazed it was back and was like "Oh yes I loved that as a child, why not!" She was happy, especially as the main reason she wanted to see it was because she was a big fan of RTD and his writing and had loved Eccleston in Second Coming and Cracker. So we watched it and really enjoyed it! It got all the right notes. Not super heavy in continuity for new fans but enough nods to keep the old guard happy. And it was fresh and fun and looked like it had had money thrown at it!! I loved the idea of the Autons (and as my first memory is Tom regenerating into Peter, I had never seen the Autons before) and there were cool shots (Westminster Bridge, the London Eye) and silliness (burping bins and Auton Micky!). I think 7 was a perfect score as it was quite light BUT it was hugely important in setting up how new Doctor Who would be!

I recently re-watched the first season of the X-Files for the first time in decades. Certainly not since Dr Who came back. Struck me how much of that format they took for the re-launch. I also think Eccleston is similar to Duchovny in terms of being able to handle a specific type of humour. I love Eccleston, and I was over the moon he was cast. Cracker was my first move into “adult" telly following the 30th celebration of Who back in 1993, and he was incredible in that. Shame he didn't have a second series cos I reckon it might have been like McCoy's second season where they took his strengths and played more to those to very great effect.

It would have been nice to see Christopher in a season building on the strength of what he had done. It's awful that we knew he was going so early on because it slightly overshadowed things.

@@p-bal yeah, deffo. They handled it very badly. A second season would have been so good. Again, like McCoy he seemed to be at his most comfortable as a supporting lead, like in Father's Day. It would've been great to see that developed. I also think it was great cos he was so against type, but still so definitely the doctor. I remember all the other names being touted at the time just sounded like a pantomime idea of the character. DT was ace, and his love and commitment to the program is so clear, but he was much more to type. I always get the feeling that there's a “silent majority" feeling from the classic Drs that CE was a favourite, although that's just me. Bottom line is, I'm a big Eccleston fan. 😁

A line from Clive re "what did he look like?" could have been a good way to just show Eccleston, but hint at other incarnations

So you're doing a video per episode? nice, this will be interesting. I prefer classic who overall, but some series of modern who are brilliant. The russel seasons are very 2000s now, but that's doctor who for you, show of it's time over the decades. I think the first episode does a solid job introducing a new generation to doctor who while bringing the classic fans back in. But let's not talk about the cgi wheelie bin....
