This is hard and conflicting but choose colors that you have always wanted to work with and haven't or something out of yarns you have sitting around or maybe look at a color wheel? Also, you have whole year if you want to change, as in bringing new colors in. It will be beautiful whatever you choose. Plus you can try a stitch and use that in its own personal blanket in a yarn you find you really love. It's like a practice in color. Txo

My first and really only tunisian article I made was a piece and stitched it for going over a cast iron pan handle. I love it and never get burned, great beginner project. Great thing is you do not need a special hook just a regular crochet hook.

I'm really enjoying finding out about Tunisian/Afghan/Shepherd's crochet and it was great that you have explored the history of this fascinating but little known craft. I did some research online too, and was surprised to find out that it has more names than you'd expect, and that very little is known about its origin. I was also thinking - like you - that it might have originated in North Africa (and traveled to France through Spain with the Moors?) because it would be a handy-dandy way for a migrating Moorish housewife, traveling with hubby from Africa on the back of a camel, to stitch up useful rugs with nothing more than an easily and cheaply carved hook and handspun fleece from the sheep or even a camel. What a pity so little information remains about ancient ways of life. We can only use our imaginations.... Anyhow, I'm trying to obtain a reasonably priced and good quality hook (I live in France which is not as well supplied as north America) and then I'll be joining in with the blanket project. Love your Tunisian crochet calendar blanket. Finished my first square in an afternoon but it measured 9 inch square instead of 12. I am not concerned about the difference, I plan to edge my squares until they the correct size. Thanks for teaching us a new skill.

I am so crochet challenged The Simple dishcloth was so hard for me!! I think it’s because I have pencil grip. Looks like knife grip is better for long hook!!! I watched a couple of videos of other Tunisian stitches. They make it look so easy!!!! But I know this is a practice thing!!! Hi Princess Frances! Yes, practice is definitely the name of the game here 😁 And I find I usually end up holding my long hook like a knitting needle. It's slower going, but the fabric texture is worth it!
The thing I've been struggling with is holding the long hook, I keep finding that I have like a death grip on it which is making my hand hurt lol! I decided to try the shorter hook with the wire and thats helped a bit though!

Respectfully, you (Jada) are the only person I have ever seen do the last stitch of the row that way by only going through 1 leg of a stitch (& also a border going thru stitches the way you did). I think it would be important for your students to know that most everyone else goes through 2 bars or legs of the very last stitch at the end of each row. By doing it the way you are, you leave a little bit of a gap; also when doing the border & going through 1 leg of the stitches on each side, you leave a little gap compared to how dense the interior stitches of the fabric are. I just feel those who are actually brand new at tunisian should be aware that this is not the standard way the last stitch of the rows are done. There are of course numerous other RUclips tutorials on the learning the basics of tunisian crochet which show the way I am talking about. And of course there are no crochet or knit police and no crime done when doing something different lol, but it is helpful to be aware that you are doing something in alternative way.

I couldn't be more thankful you've chosen to do this Tunisian calendar sampler this year. I'm so busy with my crochet small business I never seem to have the time to expand my Tunisian stitch. So this is just PERFECT, and with you I couldn't be in better hands. It's why I jumped at it! I've set my calendar for the monthly video premiers of each new square and stitch. It's a great way to expand skills over time with a beautiful blanket to show for it in the end. I did a square! I like it. I'm glad the rows are short because a couple of time I made a mistake and had to pull out two rows. What happens if you get distracted and aren't sure if you pulled through two or three loops by accident? (I'd rather not have to undo two rows at the end because my stitch count is off.)
Hi! Take a close look at what TSS through 2 loops looks like, then take a look at what TSS through 3 or more loops looks like and you'll be able to see the difference 😊 It gets easier to see with practice!

Hi Barbara, practice is all it takes in this case! Tension is the biggest thing to even out when we dive into Tunisian, because we're juggling all these loops at the same time, but it WILL eventually even out with practice 💗
loving it so far, but i made my square 38 stitches by 38 rows (about 12x12 inches) - as long as i keep my squares the same will it matter going forward with my blanket?
Hi Lisa, you will want a row count that is a multiple of 4, and a stitch count that is an even number - and all squares should follow the same counts 😊

My gram used to do this thing called by her croknitting, you have a long stick that looks like a crochet hook on both ends, you cast on as if you are going to knit then you add another color and crochet, when you get to the end you turn the hook and use the first color going back leaving the loops on the hook like Tunisian but the look is so different. I have asked so many people if they have heard of this method but I have yet to find anyone. When you are done with your project you cast off as in knitting. I wish my gram was still alive as I have forgotten how to do the process completely. I'm beginning to believe it's something she made up. My dad made her hooks for her out of dowels all different sizes like crochet hooks. I would like to know if anyone out there knows of this process and I wish you tube would make it so we could post pictures.

My gram was a crocheter but liked to make blankets but got bored real fast crocheting them so she started doing the croknitting, before she passed away she had made everyone in the family a two toned blanket. Jayda shows how to do this with the steam of an iron. Never place the iron on the knit. It's a great way to stop rolling and reshaping.

Very interesting history!!!! Thank you!! I made your Tunisian dishcloth from a few years back. Still use it!!! I might make the blanket. Waiting to see how hard the next two are before I commit!! I am so crochet challenged The Simple dishcloth was so hard for me!! I think it’s because I have pencil grip. Looks like knife grip is better for long hook!!! I watched a couple of videos of other Tunisian stitches. They make it look so easy!!!! But I know this is a practice thing!!! Actually Tunisian crochet fascinates me even though it makes me crazy when I try it!!! I will probably do it as soon as I get my courage up!!! 😀😀😀‼️. Thanks for brightening my day!! ‼️‼️‼️😀🌈‼️
Hi Princess Frances! Yes, practice is definitely the name of the game here 😁 And I find I usually end up holding my long hook like a knitting needle. It's slower going, but the fabric texture is worth it!
The thing I've been struggling with is holding the long hook, I keep finding that I have like a death grip on it which is making my hand hurt lol! I decided to try the shorter hook with the wire and thats helped a bit though!
It is a struggle , getting used to a longer hook.

Hi Jayda. I have a Tunisian hook that I’m using for a baby cocoon that is worked in the round. This is a double ended hook but they each face the opposite direction. It’s very cool! Happy Friday!💞
That's a Croknit hook, and allows for some interesting techniques. Have fun!
Thanks for telling me what it’s called. The cocoon I am making is done in 2 colors so that’s the reason for this particular hook I think. 😊

My biggest issue is the back bump. No matter how loose I do the chain it’s never loose enough

Respectfully, you (Jada) are the only person I have ever seen do the last stitch of the row that way by only going through 1 leg of a stitch (& also a border going thru stitches the way you did). I think it would be important for your students to know that most everyone else goes through 2 bars or legs of the very last stitch at the end of each row. By doing it the way you are, you leave a little bit of a gap; also when doing the border & going through 1 leg of the stitches on each side, you leave a little gap compared to how dense the interior stitches of the fabric are. I just feel those who are actually brand new at tunisian should be aware that this is not the standard way the last stitch of the rows are done. There are of course numerous other RUclips tutorials on the learning the basics of tunisian crochet which show the way I am talking about. And of course there are no crochet or knit police and no crime done when doing something different lol, but it is helpful to be aware that you are doing something in alternative way.

The hooks we're using for the whole year are shown in our first Tunisian Tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/NpdVuPmAIrQ/видео.html I have had the chance to try 3 types, Pony, Boye and Susan Bates and they're all fine, but I'm sure there are others out there available in different countries that are great too!

I am ordering the Boye afghan and crow hooks today in several sizes. I couldn't be more thankful you've chosen to do this Tunisian calendar sampler this year. I'm so busy with my crochet small business I never seem to have the time to expand my Tunisian stitch. So this is just PERFECT, and with you I couldn't be in better hands. It's why I jumped at it! I've set my calendar for the monthly video premiers of each new square and stitch. It's a great way to expand skills over time with a beautiful blanket to show for it in the end.

I did a square! I like it. I'm glad the rows are short because a couple of time I made a mistake and had to pull out two rows. What happens if you get distracted and aren't sure if you pulled through two or three loops by accident? (I'd rather not have to undo two rows at the end because my stitch count is off.)
Hi! Take a close look at what TSS through 2 loops looks like, then take a look at what TSS through 3 or more loops looks like and you'll be able to see the difference 😊 It gets easier to see with practice!

Hi Barbara, practice is all it takes in this case! Tension is the biggest thing to even out when we dive into Tunisian, because we're juggling all these loops at the same time, but it WILL eventually even out with practice 💗

loving it so far, but i made my square 38 stitches by 38 rows (about 12x12 inches) - as long as i keep my squares the same will it matter going forward with my blanket?
Hi Lisa, you will want a row count that is a multiple of 4, and a stitch count that is an even number - and all squares should follow the same counts 😊
Can you put links for where to get all these different sized hooks? I've only been able to find 1 size of the normal long hook.
Just out of curiosity…. Are we going to need a hook other than the traditional (hook on one end/stopper on the other) with this year’s blanket?

My gram used to do this thing called by her croknitting, you have a long stick that looks like a crochet hook on both ends, you cast on as if you are going to knit then you add another color and crochet, when you get to the end you turn the hook and use the first color going back leaving the loops on the hook like Tunisian but the look is so different. I have asked so many people if they have heard of this method but I have yet to find anyone. When you are done with your project you cast off as in knitting. I wish my gram was still alive as I have forgotten how to do the process completely. I'm beginning to believe it's something she made up. My dad made her hooks for her out of dowels all different sizes like crochet hooks. I would like to know if anyone out there knows of this process and I wish you tube would make it so we could post pictures.

My gram was a crocheter but liked to make blankets but got bored real fast crocheting them so she started doing the croknitting, before she passed away she had made everyone in the family a two toned blanket.
