Great video, Jayda. Thanks! I leave things as gifts in public places a lot, with a note that says “I’m not lost. I’m just alone. If I made you smile, take me home!”
Nursing homes also appreciate crocheted items. Many nursing homes have a budget and most of the time, the Activities Department get the short end of the money. I have seen in my almost 4 decades in nursing plenty of Activities Directors use their own money to buy small things for BINGO prizes, raffles, etc. So, things like bags, lap blankets, stuffed toys or seasonal decor would be a great start. I suggest calling a local nursing home and speaking to someone in Activities to see what their needs are.
Hi Jayda, As always, you brightened my day. And, your topic inspired me as I've been struggling with this exact question lately. One idea you triggered for me - Little Free Libraries! A crocheter can have small items on hand as they walk/drive around town and put them in Free Little Libraries that they come across. Or, for those who are really industrious, put up a Free Little Library (of crocheted items) in your own front yard!
I have a family member who works at a women’s safe use site and I have sort of adopted the 75 women who frequent it. This past Christmas I made 75 gift bags with soap savers and chocolate and candy and such. I am going to extend it to include ear warmers and mittens too in 2025. This has made me so incredibly happy!
I crochet for charity. I am part of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela. Last month I donated blankets, hats and scarves to a family whose home burned down. Our work goes to the less fortunate. This year March 20, 2025 is International Day of Happiness, a United Nations initiative. To mark the occasion we are going to create the Hugest Happiness Blanket in the World to be laid out in the Windy City of Gqeberha. 🥰
I don't know where to put stuff after you've made them. I haven't kept a lot of things for myself. But here are just some of my general crocheting tips about the stuff you make. Every item I crochet, has a place where it's going. A commission I'm working on, a gift for a specific person, a charity I'm donating to, or a pattern I'm working on. Even if it's something for me, it still has a purpose: curtains for an odd window, sweaters for myself, because I'm down to two or three, a blanket for my husband (or sons) for the cold nights. Most of my projects have a dual purpose, because I also design and write my own crochet patterns. On those rare occasions when I'm making something just to have something to do with my hands, here are the places I think about. The VA. You would be surprised how much veterans appreciate something handmade. Churches, especially one that has programs for shut-ins, or homeless drives. Missions. Especially missions that work with the homeless. Here's one most people wouldn't think of - Animal Shelters: especially if you are making small blankets, cushions and even some stuffed toys. That blanket, cushion or stuffed toy can bring a scared dog or cat out of their shells, which will help them get adopted into loving homes. Soup Kitchens. Blankets, hats, scarves, mittens, cushions... You may not be able to donate money to soup kitchens to help administer to the homeless, but a lot of those people would love ANYTHING that makes their life more comfortable. Soup Kitchens are a great way to get them out to the people that need them. I hope this helps!
I like the idea of frogging an old item for stuffing. I've used yarn scraps for stuffing for a long time. The pillows are always more comfy than fiberfill. I have some dishcloths that are getting frogged tonight. Plus you made my kitties happy. Thanks for the great ideas. I have a jar filled with little things like hearts, stars, small grannies, flowers, etc. that my grandkids love going through and taking home.
I drop notes in women's dressing rooms and the ice cream and cookie sections of the grocery store geared towards women who might be struggling that day. I usually leave a little key chain, beanie, headband ear muff thing or fingerless gloves (especially in the ice cream area) just to let them know they are not alone and that someone cares. Usually plus size, maternity and low income stores...not to say fancy women don't have issues, but they aren't around me.
Thank you for great ideas! I visit a 92 yr old family friend who is now in a nursing home. I will see if they may want calendar blankets that I crocheted from your tutorials 😊
I definitely use it to maintain sanity ❤ i gift all the time. I give my dermatologist gifts all the time! I give neighbors who help me. I made over 40 hats to donate
I love the idea of leaving a random gift to a stranger, I think I’ll take all the little toys I made and put them in bags and leave them on the picnic table at the elementary school, all the kids can have a little toy.
Hello all. I used to do craft shows but health wise just to hard to do. I really like the idea of leaving stuff in random areas. I know my and maybe other churches do things for the homeless, which is a huge problem.
Good Afternoon Jayda as always you brighten the day. I have been crocheting and donating for a long time. Have had some good causes and some sketchy causes and know someone who actually threw out piles of donated items into a dumpster because they were taking up space. Nowadays I donate to animal shelters or kids in need.
animal shelters are a good idea. they can use blankets for the bottom of the kennels for the animals to lay on. And toys for the animals to play with. animals do not care what something looks like. they care about the use of it. Another suggestion is to donate leftover / scrap yarn and a few hooks to nursing homes. a lot of residents crochet and/or knit and have no supplies. Happy New Year everyone.
I just went through my huge bin of yarn, and donated about half of it. I know I look at the thrift shop for yarn, especially when I want to donate at a low cost to me... If you use cricut there is a creator that made a set of hat sizing templates, and look like hats; from sizing Preemie to Large Adult I believe....I cut them out on cardstock and used my laminator to make them last longer. They are great templates because they can be used to measure the crown and length ... I use these when I make my donated hats or just any hat... I also HIGHLY suggest looking into doing Craft Shows. They are a lot of work but also a great FUN. You can meet great people and make a little profit. ❤❤❤
I make garments to dress up with. A lacy sweater , dress, cardigan, or shirt makes any pair of pants and shirt look fancy. I always have a garment for any event. And they p ast a long time.
This year I’m thinking of crocheting some little ducks. Then when we go on our cruise we can hide them so little kids find them. Ever heard of the cruising ducks. I think I’ll crochet a few. It’s going to be fun!
I crocheted small ducks with frog hats and hid them on my last cruise. I also gave some to people I've met. Our cabin Steward has 2 young children. I gave him 2. The very next day he shared with me that he FaceTime his kids and it made them so happy and can't wait for their dad to bring them home. It warmed my heart and a moment I will remember about this cruise. I found cruise duck tags on Amazon and attached them to the ducks I've hidden. So much fun.
Those dolls are adorable, I can’t wait until I have a large stash of things and need to consider all of these ideas! If you want to donate something to my cause, that would be alright
My issue, I only make things that I want to keep 😅 I always like when I make something that I don't feel too precious about, it means I will use it to peaces!! Also, Animal shelters are a great place for blankets and crocheted toys. Just check to see if they have any specifications when it comes to size and/or materials
I made a bunch of the chippy cubby animals and took the gingerbread house pattern and turned it into a barn with working door for my nephew that my sister in-law put in her diaper bag that she takes out at restaurants. Alot of people ask her where she got it from and how much it was. I never know how much I could sell something like that for.
This year at Christmas we decided to do a white elephant gift exchange where you could gift a gag or a good gift. At the last minute I decided to include a couple of extra gifts. They were scrap afghans that I made last year. What a hit they were for the recipient! Right after Christmas I intentionally started crocheting next year’s white elephant gifts. Who doesn’t love something made with love from the heart!💝
Are we doing a calendar blanket this year? Also pet shelters need pet beds, blankets to serve as beds. Give some things to them. The homeless need hats, gloves, sweaters, socks and blankets, also for their pet, Women’s shelters need the same, orphanages need items for parentless children. Cancer treatment centers need hats, also face masks. Having gone through cancer treatment myself I know what happens to the immune system. So masks are very important. The list of places to donate crocheted or knitted goods is nearly endless. 😊
Jayda the skeins behind you are so gorgeous and aesthetically pleasing! I feel like I could just shrink down and take the best nap in them. Did you wind them yourself or did they come that way?
Not be a downer but I tried donating my crocheted blankets. I was told because granny squares have holes in the that aren’t warm enough. Dumb excuse in my mind. Also many charities refuse to take what they call second hand stuff.
Biggest problem with selling home made stuff a lot of people won’t pay what you are asking, even when it’s reasonable, and always try to bring the price down. They just don’t understand the time or craftsmanship in creating the item.

If you don't have much scrap yarn available...thrift stores and the goodwill have blankets almost always that you can get for less than $4 US

Great ideas, Jayda, Thank you for taking the time to share
Your local jail often needs hats and gloves in the winter for people getting discharged in the winter.
Good idea!
Love this idea. Thank you for it.
Great ideas, yes. Nursing homes and cancer and dialysis centers also will take hats and Afghans to help keep their clients warn.
We have a group that Scarf Bomb a local park. It’s a lot of fun and people love new scarves!
I make garments to dress up with. A lacy sweater , dress, cardigan, or shirt makes any pair of pants and shirt look fancy. I always have a garment for any event. And they p ast a long time.
Those are a lot of great ideas!!

Fun idea!
Best put a 'free' tag on them so that people will actually take them

Alot of people do not appreciate home crafted items. I've given some away before jus to find them again in yard sales or in the trash
Me too! So many times!
The right person just didn’t receive it.. so so many individuals would absolutely love it, I know I would. 😊❤😊
Happy Friday, fam! Thanks for the reminder to do something with the project/WIP piles, Jayda. (Under 5 mins)

Good morning sweet girl!
I put small applied items (hearts, crosses, etc) in clothes donations for household families in need
Love the Halloween idea!!!
Me, too! Looking forward to stash busting orange yarn!
Project linus is amazing to for donating
I have a few granny square stockings hanging about ... maybe someone can use them? They're big enough to put presents in.
Stuff them turn them upside down and attach some sticks and buttons or pom pins and you have a giant reindeer head.

Hello 👋🤗
Will there be a calendar blanket this year?
Jayda’s calendar blankets are announced the third week in January every year.
Happy New Year!! Will we have a calendar blanket this year?
Jayda’s calendar blankets are announced the third week in January every year.
Crochet definitely quiets my mind 😌 I love your channel Jada, I’ve been watching for years!!
Hi crafty family. I've sold to friends at a family and friends price.
Not be a downer but I tried donating my crocheted blankets. I was told because granny squares have holes in the that aren’t warm enough. Dumb excuse in my mind. Also many charities refuse to take what they call second hand stuff.
I have way too much yarn. I am very sick and need to stop crocheting. How do I sell my yarn stash? I need the money for the utility bill and medicine.
People are always asking me why I don't sell my stuff. My problem is I have no idea what to charge for anything.
Biggest problem with selling home made stuff a lot of people won’t pay what you are asking, even when it’s reasonable, and always try to bring the price down. They just don’t understand the time or craftsmanship in creating the item.
Donate! I have just donated all my yarn.
☮️🌎🌲
Try donating to local animal shelter
Homeless shelters battered womens shelters elementary school teachers for needy kids.
Great ideas. Will have to see if there are any places near me that will take handmade items. 🧶🫂
Great ideas, thank you!!!🙏
