Thanks to you mate I can string edge 3 - 4 times quicker. I have found a new appreciation and a new hobby cutting mine and both my neighbors lawns. I have a back injury but the amount of pain I’m in when I finish seems to go a little bit once I take a step back and look at 3 houses with trimmed edgers ( it’s not perfect but I’m still learning ) and the grass, all 3 houses are the same height. Now just need to learn grass maintenance. I also watched a Vedic of yours when you put a garden edge with the trimmer I did that to my neighbors back yard and it just lifted it a little bit and made it look like a garden bed and not just some plants coming out of the grass. I know you do a lot of videos about the business side of things but I decided to subscribe anyway as I like watching a bit of everything and I discover you channel as 4am the other night when I couldn’t sleep and found you had some of the best tips. I got a couple of tips from others but mainly you and seem pretty good at your job and the RUclips side of it too. I look forward to learn more about lawn moving and even the business side of it to some extent too.
Cool Video, that's basically how I edge with a string trimmer, the way you did, but normally, I walk behind the trimmer, I usually edge around stones and Monuments in a cemetery, to keep the grass and dirt away from the topside of the flat stones, the noobs try to trim like me, but I gotta trim in slow mo for them and they still can't make it look like it was done with a lawnmower or an edger, I also use a string trimmer for around brick walkways and in between the bricks, All I do is use the handle like a rail and my one hand like a brake and roll my other wrist to change angles with the trimmer, just let the handle slide through your hand, till you get the angle you want, sometimes I'll work on up to 12 rows of stones at a time, the Boss, who used to do landscape work don't even know how I make it look so good, I love those Stihl Fs-90's.
Nice video. With a bit of practice and a tutorial on how do string it, I saved my self about $200-$400 on a edge trimmer. As I don’t have a fancy trimmer yet that allows add ons but thinking about getting a professional one as they are lighter and would be easier on my back injury.
Thanks for teaching me something here ! ;)
very good tips you explained it very well :)
Well done. Thanks.
i learn how to do edges with your video, thanks for the video, now i mow my lawn and look beautiful!
will you stick string trimmers and regular edges depends on if it's the first time we cut Edge or not if we could what time will use an edger will use one of them 3.5 or 5 horsepower ones if we've been doing regularly couple times and we use a stick but if we use it all the time we usually use the string trimmer
In about 12 years I have never used or owned a stick edger. Always went with the string trimmer its just what im used to. I will say it is alot easier to learn to edge with a trimmer walking backwards so your pulling the weedeater clockwise so there is less resistance. i agree always stand on the sidewalk, drive, curb side.

I enjoyed watching, very entertaining, thanks for sharing❤️
Thanks for watching
Thanks man. U the legend
Great video! I actually had a customer last year that hired me after she fired the other guy because he used a string trimmer to edge. She did not like it!! Honestly to me it didn't look that bad; but hey i had the stick edger and that was what was important to her. She said the other guy refused to edge with anything but the trimmer. Oh well C'est la vie; his stubbornness was my gain! LOL
Man you make that look so easy . I've been doing it wrong .
Good job
We use a sharpened edger blade for Bermuda Grass, makes it look great. When the grass greens up i'll be showing finished edges on my POV footage.
Very good professional video. Much better than a lot of other videos on this topic I have watched.
+stendec Stretcher thank you for the kind words
Nice vid
Metal edger blade or string... a beautiful edge is a must!
Get out there and make some beautiful edges, guys!
I live in a neighborhood where there are some terrible "edges"... (air quoted)
My yards stand out with beautiful edges.
So what is considered the more professional way for slim vertical edge vs. bevel the edge back toward the lawn. The local guy that does my neighborhood uses string, but by end of summer it looks like a small trench between the sidewalk and the grass.
Kirk our hoa lawn svc does the bevel edge, looks awful leaving the roots butchered & way too short.
Kirk,
To keep from digging too deep a trench, just don't let your string trimmer go too deep.. Keep it at the height you determine is correct for not digging too deep..
That is what I do..
Good luck !
I think back to those high-dollar properties where the yard edge looked like it was cut with a dado blade. How do you make that happen?
Thanks☺
Good video
I get the best results when I edge first on the sidewalk, to set the edge in the ground, and start the grass blade edge, then go back and do the final edging standing on the grass side.
I can see from the grass side, the grass edge more clearly, and just have to keep the machine perfectly straight and angled correctly for depth, and I will get a really sharp edge this way..
Very well done! Thank you! Very informative! Besides using a $hitton of weed killer to get rid of crabgrass growing on the street between the asphalt and concrete edging, do you have any recommendations? Using my weedwacker simply causes it to run out of cutting line. I have a very long front yard to deal with... probably around 100 yards total. It's just a huge nuisance!
borrow an edger once?
The right side with the stick edger seems to have more chips on the concrete. I'll sick with using the string trimmer. Thanks for the tips.
Stick edger to create an edge, weed whacker to maintain it.
Bepis Cola yes that is true u will end up using way to much string if it's never been edged
Ñwwñedhgc aba
amen
Did 2 years of asphalt seal coating before I started up my business. Every driveway had to be edged with a trimmer before coating. I've always been good with a mower and working on small machines. I decided that $12 hr was not enough for how good I can work a trimmer alone. Retired county head horticulturalist was nervous about anyone using a string trimmer around his plants. I let people who think I need to do a better job find someone else.
John Hull o
Both ways,looks good to me..
I have the same head on mine to and i did take my guard of it just gets in the way
so how do you control the length of the string? I've always wondered that.
Did the stick edger tear up the cement driveway edge?
Good job there! For some reasons, I can't seem to know how to use the string trimmer properly.
good advice. but using the blade in many cases to flatten or bevel the edge you need to go back with the string. I know it depends.thanks for your time.
man this shit hard for beginners lol
Use string trimmer, stand on the grass and walk backwards. Looks Best
PraiseYahweh777 I use string trimmer and walk backwards as well, but why stand on the grass? I stand on the sidewalk since I can see the line better.
depends on where you want the debris to go
do all trimmers rotate the same way?
+Clive Ellis - Nope. Democrats trimmer rotates backwards. I bet I know how you vote. Had to do it.
Clive Ellis not all. I think most trimmers go right to left but my echo goes left to right
I use my Victa edger ;)
I could never seem to walk forward and edge with a trimmer. I walk on the grass side and walk backward. I tried this week walking forward, just to strange for me.
Jason man, some day im going to come find yah! im near Montgomery :)
I was in Montgomery for 10 years but now I live north of BIrmingham
yea i was up there one time and saw your truck, about 8 or so months ago.
What part of Alabama are you from?
iv been using a string trimmer for 12 years and I walk backwards it kinda looks like I'm doing the moonwalk when do so I don't bounce and leave gouge
Do u edge every property even if the customer doesn't request it?
+Jonboy's Lawn Service yes
@Lawn Care Business What company do you use to put your logo on your shirts? I use the same kind of shirts for my business the thin sports tek like shirts. I just do not know a place that will do a good job putting the logo on my shirt. I'm in the Washington, DC area.
+Yard Buddies I have a small local company. They might make some for you if you would like and ship them to you
please please, I would be so grateful!
Hey Jason! Do you trim, mow, blow, mow? What's your procedure? Thanks man.
I usually mow, then trim, then blow
Lawn Care Life Blow the trim right back on the lawn?? That’s the issue that I’m running into.
Best way to edge is left hand on the trigger and right hand on the shaft that way you're edging with the grass not against it.
Where I live in Hawaii u take the card off osha will fine u per trimmer with out guard
Good deal because I have seen so much damage down when that guard is removed. I made it mandatory this year and there haven't been any broken windows or cars scratched.
I took mine off. Lived on Oahu. But I didn't do it commercially. It was on a Military Golf Course I was a civilian employee under the government.
AucklandHard safety its himportant, first thing i found when i start the video
No guards , hate em and won’t use em if you know how to trim without a guard it’s safer than using one, guards are for rookies
I like the edger better
not bad for being a year rusty.

And i make string last bc of how i use it. Just watch i dont use speed feed line. Only took one bump
I tend to run out of line too much when I use the string.
Ease up a little higher and be careful to minimize touching the concrete (and dirt).
For every inch that you extend your trimmer line past the cutter on the deflector shield your RPMS gone drastically and that causes them engine to slow down while the engine is still firing at it's designed firing count therefore causing the engine to be fired upon incorrectly causing the piston to be scored and the trimmer engine to be eventually being destroyed! I have seen it! STIHL Silver Certified Technician!
+Atwoods Of Nacogdoches STIHL SHOP thanks for the info. I have a quick question for you since you are a Stihl technician. My dad is looking at purchasing a new trimmer. Would you recommend a 94r or 91r? Or is there another one that you would recommend. I was told the 94r was more like the old Stihls like an fs80
Lawn Care Life Handled a 91, use a 94 and also own Husky 525. Also have Stihl 85. 94 is very good. 525 is a little better. Feels lighter.
The 94r is a 2 stroke trimmer. very similar to the fs 80. if your father is looking for something close to the fs 80 go with the 94r. trust me I have both fs80 and fs94
Atwoods Of Nacogdoches STIHL SHOP
You didn't go for the gold?! puss
I don't suppose either of those are variable speed. The button is either on or off.
joe doe these machines have a engine and a throttle lever, like your car has, the further you press it the more fuel and air gets into the engine and thereby it will ether run faster or slower.
Anyone notice the chips in the driveway missing? Was that caused by the edger?
Good observation thought those were not caused by the edger. Just an old house with an old driveway.
Edgers mess concrete up for sure , stick edge once per month and vertical trim the other 3 weeks
Yes I seen it too!
@@dheadhunter413 makes sense.
use hard edger less mess and less chance of a broken window
But doesn't it burn up your trimmer line faster when edging with a trimmer? That's why I have just used the stick edger.
Jake Hendrix yeah it does. I’ve found it easier when doing yards to just use a weed eater for edging. You can weeded and edge at the same time and kill two birds with one stone. Get the job done a lot faster and easier. Us lawn care guys can afford extra string
hey dude, im 20 and im looking to start a small business like this , mainly just me working on it. How would you reccomend I gain experience in this line of work? how much do you think I should charge to just mow a lawn?
also, what services would you reccomend I learn?
Koopa 265 practice on your own lawn, it won't matter if you mess up 👍🏻
+Koopa 265 - Based on what I just read, I don't think your plan is going to succeed. I would 'recommend' a different venture.
People aren't gonna spoonfeed you ideas like what you should charge and how you should learn. If you weren't ignorant, you'd figure out those things. I think dutch971 is correct, if you have to ask others for advice on those, your business is going to fail.
+Zark Muckerberg - That's right. I was trying to be extremely nice to him. Says he's 20 but acts more like he's 10 in terms of intellect. If he keeps traveling down this mental pathway, he'll fail at everything he does.
I'd use a string trimmer cause your taking out the concrete.
what? if you're doing that you're using the edger wrong. It should be taking out grass
Allan donald I get it that you’re edging the grass but do you run the risk of chipping the concrete driveway and then the client complains about it? I like the idea of doing an initial edging with the blade and then maintaining with the string.
Didn't know it was safe to flip the trimmer upside down
20+ years on a “stick edger” wouldn’t use anything else. Split shaft trimmers = one power unit to maintain
I think that concrete should always be edged with an edger. Use the right tool for the job. That's my 2 cents.
Gilitar I start with a stick edger. Then mow and string trim then finish the edge with a string trimmer to clean and blades that have decided to be in the edge. The stick edged just doesn’t do as good as making the grass look good but it makes the groove along the driveway look beautiful.
No one ever say what type of line they use. 80 or. 90 or higher!
To edge, I just tilt the trimmer sideways and walk forward with it on my right along the sidewalk/driveway
Could you make like a video showing it?
Want a good edge? Get a push gas edger.
Are you working alone or are you running crews?
good job but stick edger
Flipping your trimmer upside down does it damage it at all ? I mean the oil drains to top of sump and away from the engine.
+Sgtsavage75 some trimmers perform better upside down than others. I have not experienced problems with mine
2-stroke engines...no oil sumps, oil mixed with gas. Like a chainsaw
Your holding the head a little bit too low. And your hold is a lottle awkward. Try grabbing the weedeater more guitar level near your waist depending on your hight. Watch my video. I dnt talk much in it but youll see what im talking abt. Also my way is to invert it and hold it like you tote a bow. So the debris is thrown towards the user. If you tilt right it will just hit your low shin. Its pretty cool
NEVER REMOVE THE GUARD
modify the guard
He didnt suggest.
There is no replacement for using the proper tools for a particular job. I have never seen anybody to this day after 25 years that can cut an edge with trimmer as good as an edger does. Close but close is only acceptable and I don't do just acceptable work.
Stick edger makes too much dust. The whole neighborhood will need to wash their windows after that.
I don’t like using the stick edger
edge it with a spade, maintain it with a weed whacker
Edging with a weed whip is dangerous even the manufacturers that make weed weed whips suggested that to use them as for edging but whatever works for you works for you just saying it's dangerous seen a lot of guys using for edging seen a lot of Windows being blown out lot of people getting hit up with rocks just a personal opinion that's all peace out be safe out there
Blaize Moraites -
You are absolutely correct, an edger can sling anything pretty far with a lot of velocity, so we have to be really careful, watch very diligently, and always, look downward and make sure there are no people, cars, windows, etc., that could get hit..
I have been using an Echo String Trimmer for decades and never had an issue.
In fact, it's still the same machine !
The best thing I ever did to allow me to cut my rpm speed almost in half if not more, is to use Vortex Professional Trim Line, from Rotary Corp., Glennville, GA. This black , twisted, line is so balanced and smooth, you hardly hear it going through the air. It requires in my case, very little rpm, and I have had it last a lot, lot, longer than any of the other orange, yellow, lines they sell at HD of China...
I also never run the rpm up just do it, what a waste of gas, and wear on the little engine..
Now, with this new line, again, my machine is barely running and cutting a very, very, fine, straight, cut of all the grass edge, and when I turn it over to lightly trim over a high spot in the grass, it also cuts this very fine, and even, not tearing it, etc., at all..
This will make your trimmer wear very quickly they are not designed to run upside down said the industrial grade. And not all of those
I think that is what has happened to a Stihl trimmer I've taken to the shop twice now. Its a lower end commercial grade. I've had thefts last year and they got three of my Stihl F130 which were really WORK HORSES but this F70 is as good. I've got a guy who is very good at using a trimmer but i can't get him to see that it isn't to be used to do EVERYTHING. He revs the engines constantly which it isn't needed. If I could just get him to slow down.
Bluff City Blight Patrol yea i know what you mean. When i first started i kept wondering why my trimmers lost power then i started noticing i kept having to clean carbon build up do to unburned fuel entering the exhaust from turning it up side down. Thats when i realized that it was me. I will only do this if im behind. And i clean the exhaust tray afterwards
These engines are specifically designed so they can run whichever way you hold them. Yes some un burnt fuel enters the exhaust but that is the nature of these engines, it is the way it works. it does not matter the way it's tilted. If you don't believe me then feel free to go do a bit of research.
walking forward makes it look ugly as the string cuts the grass upwards. If you walk backwards the string is cutting grass downwards leaving a much better finish.
I'm pretty sure he would have done it differently hadn't there been a camera man there.
That's not how you do it. You're doing it all wrong!
:)
shout up...terrible
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
