Thanks to you mate I can string edge 3 - 4 times quicker. I have found a new appreciation and a new hobby cutting mine and both my neighbors lawns. I have a back injury but the amount of pain I’m in when I finish seems to go a little bit once I take a step back and look at 3 houses with trimmed edgers ( it’s not perfect but I’m still learning ) and the grass, all 3 houses are the same height. Now just need to learn grass maintenance. I also watched a Vedic of yours when you put a garden edge with the trimmer I did that to my neighbors back yard and it just lifted it a little bit and made it look like a garden bed and not just some plants coming out of the grass. I know you do a lot of videos about the business side of things but I decided to subscribe anyway as I like watching a bit of everything and I discover you channel as 4am the other night when I couldn’t sleep and found you had some of the best tips. I got a couple of tips from others but mainly you and seem pretty good at your job and the RUclips side of it too. I look forward to learn more about lawn moving and even the business side of it to some extent too.

Cool Video, that's basically how I edge with a string trimmer, the way you did, but normally, I walk behind the trimmer, I usually edge around stones and Monuments in a cemetery, to keep the grass and dirt away from the topside of the flat stones, the noobs try to trim like me, but I gotta trim in slow mo for them and they still can't make it look like it was done with a lawnmower or an edger, I also use a string trimmer for around brick walkways and in between the bricks, All I do is use the handle like a rail and my one hand like a brake and roll my other wrist to change angles with the trimmer, just let the handle slide through your hand, till you get the angle you want, sometimes I'll work on up to 12 rows of stones at a time, the Boss, who used to do landscape work don't even know how I make it look so good, I love those Stihl Fs-90's.

Nice video. With a bit of practice and a tutorial on how do string it, I saved my self about $200-$400 on a edge trimmer. As I don’t have a fancy trimmer yet that allows add ons but thinking about getting a professional one as they are lighter and would be easier on my back injury.

will you stick string trimmers and regular edges depends on if it's the first time we cut Edge or not if we could what time will use an edger will use one of them 3.5 or 5 horsepower ones if we've been doing regularly couple times and we use a stick but if we use it all the time we usually use the string trimmer

In about 12 years I have never used or owned a stick edger. Always went with the string trimmer its just what im used to. I will say it is alot easier to learn to edge with a trimmer walking backwards so your pulling the weedeater clockwise so there is less resistance. i agree always stand on the sidewalk, drive, curb side.

Great video! I actually had a customer last year that hired me after she fired the other guy because he used a string trimmer to edge. She did not like it!! Honestly to me it didn't look that bad; but hey i had the stick edger and that was what was important to her. She said the other guy refused to edge with anything but the trimmer. Oh well C'est la vie; his stubbornness was my gain! LOL

Metal edger blade or string... a beautiful edge is a must!

So what is considered the more professional way for slim vertical edge vs. bevel the edge back toward the lawn. The local guy that does my neighborhood uses string, but by end of summer it looks like a small trench between the sidewalk and the grass.

      Kirk,
To keep from digging too deep a trench, just don't let your string trimmer go too deep.. Keep it at the height you determine is correct for not digging too deep..
      That is what I do..
      Good luck !

I get the best results when I edge first on the sidewalk, to set the edge in the ground, and start the grass blade edge, then go back and do the final edging standing on the grass side.
I can see from the grass side, the grass edge more clearly, and just have to keep the machine perfectly straight and angled correctly for depth, and I will get a really sharp edge this way..

Very well done! Thank you! Very informative! Besides using a $hitton of weed killer to get rid of crabgrass growing on the street between the asphalt and concrete edging, do you have any recommendations? Using my weedwacker simply causes it to run out of cutting line. I have a very long front yard to deal with... probably around 100 yards total. It's just a huge nuisance!

Did 2 years of asphalt seal coating before I started up my business. Every driveway had to be edged with a trimmer before coating. I've always been good with a mower and working on small machines. I decided that $12 hr was not enough for how good I can work a trimmer alone. Retired county head horticulturalist was nervous about anyone using a string trimmer around his plants. I let people who think I need to do a better job find someone else.

For every inch that you extend your trimmer line past the cutter on the deflector shield your RPMS gone drastically and that causes them engine to slow down while the engine is still firing at it's designed firing count therefore causing the engine to be fired upon incorrectly causing the piston to be scored and the trimmer engine to be eventually being destroyed! Edging with a weed whip is dangerous even the manufacturers that make weed weed whips suggested that to use them as for edging but whatever works for you works for you just saying it's dangerous seen a lot of guys using for edging seen a lot of Windows being blown out lot of people getting hit up with rocks just a personal opinion that's all peace out be safe out there

      Blaize Moraites -
You are absolutely correct, an edger can sling anything pretty far with a lot of velocity, so we have to be really careful, watch very diligently, and always, look downward and make sure there are no people, cars, windows, etc., that could get hit..
I have been using an Echo String Trimmer for decades and never had an issue.
In fact, it's still the same machine !
The best thing I ever did to allow me to cut my rpm speed almost in half if not more, is to use Vortex Professional Trim Line, from Rotary Corp., Glennville, GA. This black , twisted, line is so balanced and smooth, you hardly hear it going through the air. It requires in my case, very little rpm, and I have had it last a lot, lot, longer than any of the other orange, yellow, lines they sell at HD of China...
I also never run the rpm up just do it, what a waste of gas, and wear on the little engine..
Now, with this new line, again, my machine is barely running and cutting a very, very, fine, straight, cut of all the grass edge, and when I turn it over to lightly trim over a high spot in the grass, it also cuts this very fine, and even, not tearing it, etc., at all..

This will make your trimmer wear very quickly they are not designed to run upside down said the industrial grade. And not all of those

I think that is what has happened to a Stihl trimmer I've taken to the shop twice now. Its a lower end commercial grade. I've had thefts last year and they got three of my Stihl F130 which were really WORK HORSES but this F70 is as good. I've got a guy who is very good at using a trimmer but i can't get him to see that it isn't to be used to do EVERYTHING. He revs the engines constantly which it isn't needed. If I could just get him to slow down.

Bluff City Blight Patrol yea i know what you mean. When i first started i kept wondering why my trimmers lost power then i started noticing i kept having to clean carbon build up do to unburned fuel entering the exhaust from turning it up side down. Thats when i realized that it was me. I will only do this if im behind. And i clean the exhaust tray afterwards

These engines are specifically designed so they can run whichever way you hold them. Yes some un burnt fuel enters the exhaust but that is the nature of these engines, it is the way it works. it does not matter the way it's tilted. If you don't believe me then feel free to go do a bit of research.

walking forward makes it look ugly as the string cuts the grass upwards. If you walk backwards the string is cutting grass downwards leaving a much better finish.

I'm pretty sure he would have done it differently hadn't there been a camera man there.

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
