    I watched this video immediately after watching your BM786 review. You raved about how flexible the 786 leads are. How do the GW121 leads compare? Also, did you accidentally leave the factory screen protector on? Because the display looks bubbly and hard to see in the video as a result. I'd love to know how reflective the screens of the BM786 & GW121 are, and which you think is better in that regard.
    I would definitely like to see a more in-depth review of the GW121, especially the BlueTooth and computer logging features. For example, can I connect it to my iPhone or Mac and see how voltage varies over time? If you do a more detailed review, please also be sure to compare the GW121 at times with the BM786. I know they are different beasts, but I'm trying to figure out which to get and I think if you commented on both, it would help people make a better buying decision. Thank you very much for your two videos to date. Keep up the great work!

    I Like what You doing explaining the Terms and Showing Accuracy Checks, you are providing information about the nature of test equipment, Use, Function, Reliability, Cost. Flukes are an Industry Staple, but they riding on the name and history to keep pricing higher than it should be.

    I almost bought that meter when it first came out, but it was only the 1.0 version so I went with the Bryman BM869s. The 121GW has a nice blue tooth interface for data logging, can read amps and volts at the same time (I think) and of course there's the low burden amp meter, so I would go for one now that Dave has had time to do all the refinements.

    Late to the party. Love your cheerful demeanour and quips, keeping the video light and breezy.
    I think the little blue “hybrid” guy top left of the motherboard looks you show at around the 10:10 mark is a microcontroller along the lines of an BGM111A or somesuch and is likely responsible for Bluetooth communications.
    The glue on the buzzer is likely to prevent stray vibrations that would cause the buzzer to sound “tizzy” and cheap. I glue or rubberize most of my mini speakers, buzzers and piezo devices down for that reason.
    Just got myself a 121GW partly after watching this video and a few others.
    Meter seems an excellent balance of
    ⚫︎ Electrical Safety
    ⚫︎ Precision and Stability
    ⚫︎ Cost and Features.
    Looking forward to getting to grips with this thing.

      I appreciate you! Working in the defense industry and even in the medical laser field - a tech would be frowned on if someone saw him using that technique. You have to probe each pin purposefully to know for sure that you get a good reading - and you can not damage (scratch) pins by running the probe down them. I'm sure in repair work and other stuff people do that - I'm just saying it is not a great method. So I don't want to promote that;) Thank you for your support!

    Good review. I liked this meter so much I bought a 2nD one and will probably get a couple more. The extra digits are really useful for tweaking touchy bias pots. BT is basic but pretty good. 15V diode test has been very interesting. Have used it to find leaky PN junctions reverse with it. Testing Zeners without having to change meters too.
    Note though the max Cat3 600V input I keep an old Fluke for above that like in Valve (Tube) gear.

    I have to say, I have a Fluke 289, Fluke 87V and an Agilent U1252A. I had the 121GW. I bought the Flukes used and in excellent condition. The two flukes measure identically to each other. If a rail voltage is sitting at 78.409 Vdc on one meter, it will read the same on the other Fluke. Not sure if they happened to be calibrated on the same equipment??? Measuring some reference standards showed the Flukes to be the most accurate. If you buy new, sure they’re expensive, but I wouldn’t call what Dave said as “just being nice”. There is a reason Fluke is where it is. I’d buy the 289 10 times over (used) before buying a new 121GW. The 121GW is an excellent meter by the way, just not as good. I just don’t talk sh!t just because I think one is better.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  2 года назад

      Thanks for your great feedback! Those Fluke meters are great meters (although my Fluke 289 is my least favorite meter that I have), but there are so many meters out there that are better (IMHO). My manager bought a used Fluke 289 and it has been a real dud. First, it didn’t read the probes in placed in the sockets for current measurements. So he thought he repaired that, but it still pulls so much current - even when off - so it constantly needs batteries. I have a Hioki that has become my favorite meter (what a 289 would be if it could;). So, I don’t think there is a good reason for Flukes to be so expensive, and that is why I think Dave was being so nice. Anyone that works with as many meter brands as he does (as I do on this small channel), and he has Fluke advertisements on his web page that I think he was being nice. The used meters could be very old as the models have been around so long - it is hard to say what they have been through.

    • @danhorton6182
      @danhorton6182 2 года назад +2

      @@KissAnalog interesting thoughts on the 289. I knew there was an issue with a super cap draining the batteries, but I purchased mine long after that was resolved. I’m 99% certain that’s why your manager is having issues, the super cap is causing high current drain when off. It can actually be fixed somewhat easily with decent soldering skills. They swapped over to a battery to maintain time/date which eliminated the current draw when off.
      My only qualm with the 289 so far is that it takes so much time to result resistance readings. Say if I were to be rebuilding a tube radio or amp and I wanted to go through all of the carbon comps to check for value drift, it would literally take twice as long with the 289 than it would with the 87V or Agilent.
      Out of curiosity, which Hioki has become your favorite? I just recently picked up a Hioki 3030-10 and it’s a very nicely made analog. I have a few VTVM, a couple HP 410B and a couple Heathkit, but it’s nice to finally have an analog that doesn’t require being plugged in and is small.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks - I've meant to do a follow up but just haven't had time. I'll see if I can address what you point out. I think the laggy part is it being a high count meter that will often take a little bit longer to show the measurement - but not always;) Also, I think the drifting part might be the same thing - because it is a high count and has extra digits - it is more sensitive and those last digits might move around a bit where you wouldn't notice that with a typical low count 6k meter.

    The main problem with the 121GW is that the auto ranging is extremely slow and the software does not do much to mitigate this issue, I guess that's what happens when you pre-order a new product. I was hoping the community would have an alternative FW but I think that's not the case.
    It definitely has a lot of features and it is faster than it was at the beginning but it is still slow.

      Thanks for this feedback. I’ll pay attention to this and try to show it in a follow up. I wouldn’t be too surprised that it is a little slower because of the 50k counts. I think that’s why the older high count meters like the 87 defaults to 6k counts instead of the 20k counts.

      I just did the 2.05 firmware update, seems a bit quicker. BUT, with the higher count may be the reason for a bit of lag. I don't frankly care though, the bar graph is very quick. I am guessing this is why Dave added it. I have zero complaints. Awesome design, with excellent attention to detail...AT A GREAT PRICE! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

    You know it's going to be a great meter if EEVBlog (Dave Jones) puts his name on it.. He's very very particular about doing things right.

    At the risk of sounding negative I want to share my experience of purchasing an EEVBlog Brymen BM235 digital meter. Within 6 months the meter would not read AC. Every other function works. The fuses are good; the batteries are good. I contacted Dave at EEVBlog. It took a while, but he did get back to me. He had no idea why the AC function failed. The meter is supposed to be warranted for a year, but Dave never mentioned sending the unit in for repair (or better yet) just replacing it. So I have a meter that does everything but read AC....not very useful for working on electronic gear. I'm disappointed. I think I'm going back to $30 meters. If they fail like this, just buy another one.

      Why didnt you use the warranty?
      My Fluke 115 broke in the warranty period, and got a new one no questions asked (yes Flukes can go bad too😉).
      Has been working fine ever since (well over a decade ago this is)

      The warranty comes from the EEVBlog Store, i.e., Dave. So why doesn't he tell me how to avail myself of the warranty?

      Wow - thanks for the feedback! I hope this was a one-off. I haven’t heard of problems, but I did hear that early with the 121GW that there were some issues that I think were taken care of;)

    I wish he would have gone with a different company.
    UEI products should not be used on high voltage.
    They will get you killed.

      Thanks for the feedback! I don’t have any meters from UEI, so I don’t have any experience with them nor have I heard much about them. This one does look to have a lot of protection built in. As much as I’ve seen with about any meter. It might be because Dave had something to do with it;)

      @@KissAnalog I hear ya.
      They may make some good stuff but I got burned by one many years ago and I swore to never use one again.
      It's the only meter I ever had that failed like that. It just started lying to me...lol
