The way I personally like to look at Light of the Imperium, is that it starts off heavily corrupted and dissonant, just like the carnival itself and as your strike team is succeeding, surviving and destroying the corruption within the carnival's chem labs the music is reflecting this as the music is cut through by the Imperium's motiff, cutting through the noise and dissonance to bring clarity or the Emperor's light, the literal light of the Imperium!

  • @Casimir2811
    @Casimir2811 4 месяца назад +97

From my humble opinion, "Moebian Sixth" is the most well writen track of the new release. When you know the context, it conveys everything, almost like telling a story :
It starts with a sense of esoteric threat, high pitched sounds that give a feeling of something far beyond human understanding, like the Chaos they encountered.
Then it goes on with a very rythmic military tone, giving the imagery of a well organized regiment and then sounds almost like combat itself, sounding like las-rifles and explosions.
It continues and ends with music implying the downfall and corruption of the soldiers, with joyous sounds and bells clearly evocating Nurgle, intricated with touches associated with the Imperium, and then these Imperium sound simply fade and only Nurgle remains.
    A Masterpiece.

    • @PatrixBest
      @PatrixBest 4 месяца назад

Hmm... I like the idea that they were corrupted more than that they would just have turned traitor. It makes the 6th much cooler, and destroying them much more dramatic.
That these men were loyal servants of the Imperium faced against a threat beyond their understanding and were corrupted by it and now we have to kill them.

While i agree, but i can't miss to add the fact how great The Fringe track is, if u add it to Moebian Sixth. The Fringe literally tells us what poor soldiers meet there, on the frontlines. It's complementary, it's deep, it tells a story, when you combine both of them. Jesper Kyd is Malcador Sigillite of 40k music

This whole OST Vol.2 dives into storytelling of Moebian Sixth and i love it. The mystical terror of their battles on The Fringe, Their collective consciousness, the PTSD, their hatred towards Imperium.

I love how the darktide OST is so violent, amazing, and intense, but so fitting for the universe. Every track feels like stuff we'd hear playing across speakers. And it's all better with game context of movement and action never ending. Like Transit horde with the constant "Gonna GETCHA!" and breathing, a tense chase. Always moving, forward, backwards. There is no stopping. There is no stillness. We move, we fight, or we die.

fun fact about The Fringe. Moebians call their domain "Fringe". So their territory is close to the eye of terror which is a place where daemons really love to hung out, so obviously daemons have caused some trouble to moebians throughout the history. because of that constant fighting with xenos and daemons, they are only known as darktide to the people of Moebian worlds (not to cause panic among the civilians), hmm coincidence? So that "being stalked" was pretty accurate description.

To me, the Moebian suite has this taint of madness to it. It uses the same instrumentation as the music associated with the Imperium, more or less, which in my mind tells us that these are humans as well, there's nothing alien about them, but it is no Imperial War March with it's swelling organs and religious chorus urging us forward into glorious battle for the eternal and unconquerable Empire of Mankind. This is the harsh reality, the ignoble truth that no soldier ever wants to face. That on the grand stage of war, every man must play the roles of both the hunter and the prey. This is the death hymn of those who have not just accepted that truth, but relish in it. They live for the uncertainty of it, for the fear and the terror, the pain and the carnage, the pure unfiltered chaos of it all.

What Jesper Kyd captures so well in these is the stand-off between the Heretics and Forces of the Imperium. We have synths and drums to represent Moebian Six, plotting against tha Imperium in the darkness of the Carnival, preparing their troops as well as their vile concoctions to support them. And then we have organ and choir playing familiar motiffs, but struggling to push through the first soundscape as we (the acolytes) strike against them. I.e. the Light of the Imperium cutting through that darkness

Moebian Domain is the cherry on top of the cake, it plays while you're on the Mourningstar. It's this slow, intense build-up that makes use of the organ to hold this wonder and awe. I'm filled with inspiration to continue on to the next mission as if held up by my chin from the hand of an angel. What I really love about the Moebian 6th track is how it starts with those low tones that bring to mind a kind of malevolent force skulking in darkness, before building into that choir, almost like it's revealing the threat. This track brings so much more personality to the Moebian 6th as a force that is always stalking you, and can overwhelm you from the shadows at any time, and they often do.
End of the day though, no matter what track it is from the Darktide OST, they're all bangers in their own way. I'm thoroughly convinced that Jesper Kyd is simply incapable of composing a bad track.

Man, I'm still waiting on that solo play mode so I can vibe with the visuals, music, and viscera at my own pace. The Gauntlet is my favourite out of the Vol. 2 music, I think I saw someone describe it as "a malfunctioning printer and a pipe organ shouldn't make good music, but it does."

  • @SalvationCode

The Gauntlet was the first track I heard upon returning to the game after a small hiatus last summer. The crunchy synth melody immediately caught my attention, and the beat together with the choir is just so hype. I adore how groovy & melodic Jesper makes these combat tracks, all while retaining a strong theme and mood. The man's up there with Mick Gordon as one of the best composers working today.
I would actually love to see the two of them come together on a game's OST, now that I mention that!

Never ceased to amaze me how often musicians hit the nail on the head with they're analysis of these songs
For the Fringe it's exactly how you described the interrogator who sent you on the mission is desperate for you to capture one of the karnak twins alive and bring them in for questioning but they're onto you and have set a trap that you are walking into and they hunt you throughout the level.
For the gauntlet the trap has been sprung and you are fighting against each of the twins in multiple areas of the level and they are more or less even with you in skill but together they pose a serious threat and are very competent to boot

One thing that the music gives you is a rhythm to fight in melee, dodge, block push strike, strike, repeat. I, and I am sure others as well, call it the dance of combat. This goes from both Vermintide I & II and Darktide.

8:20 - you hit the nail on the head, that 'sensuality' is the toxic, dangerous lure of Chaos! It's discordant amongst the rest of the high gothic chanting to show the continued (if not somewhat doomed) fight the Imperium wages against the forces of Chaos.

The Gauntlet is my favorite track in the game (during a horde at least). The visceral and underdark nature of darktide, combined with the environment and the expectation that youre not coming back, is something i love about this game. This track, for me, is amplified by this, and is even better because we're really just killing hundreds if not thousands of heretics per match and are just feeling pure ecstasy. I absolutely vibe to this track as a zealot main, with light of the imperium a close 2nd or 3rd. Its been awhile since i last played (and i really want to but cant atm due to crappy internet where im currently situated), so i cant really rememberall my favorite tracks. Im pretty sure i love the twins boss theme as well

light of the imperium has to be my favorite track along with the new type of destruction mission. mission types in darktide have their themes, always the same song plays for each, this one is a new where you have to wreck stuff in an underground illegal stimm facility. the gauntlet plays at an endless horde "run" type event. empires will fall was a special boss fight

  • @morelstrike

"The fringe" gives that feeling of the big fight being very close, but it is not yet here.
The anticipation is just filling it.
Almost as if even soundtrack itself can't wait to for the fight to begin, already cursing the betrayers and seething for vengeance, like it can't stop itself even when it is relatively calm.
Considering that "Disposal unit" is a boss track, that fully sells clash of 2 forces that go all in that moment.
Especially the "main feature", the chant (which is really annoying it never got confirmed official lyrics)
With practically only first world being more or less recognizable, it still always brings back the point, the main point:
Vengeance (I think this coming both first and so hard sets the mood pretty well for the rest of them)
You just feel that both the boss and PCs have great beings behind them that clash just as the battle starts, making the struggle of just couple mortals more grandiose.
Tbh, best part is, the "vengeance" can fit both for the servants of the emperor and their enemies, especially in this game.
Like the first thing that comes to mind of both parties is revenge, and even music understands that.
In fact, it feels like even the background is soaked in it so much that the music also starts calling for it on it's own, independed of both parties.

The Moebian VIth are the traitor soldiers you fight in the game (they're usually called Scab [flamer/gunner/crusher] as opposed to Dreg [flamer/gunner/rager] for cultist enemies). Basically Tertium had a chaos cult growing and taking over (the cult of admonition, or dregs), the Imperium redirected an Astra Militarum regiment (the Moebian VIth) to go squash it, but then it turned out the Moebian VIth were corrupted too and joined the cult of admonition in their attempt to "liberate" their homeworld from the Imperium. Naturally this escalated the situation pretty direly, now it isn't just a cult uprising but an entire well-trained army gone rogue, and that's where the elite inquisition forces and the dudes you play as come in.
The Fringe war is the perpetual conflict going on at the edge of the region of space Tertium/Atoma is in (the Moebian Domain), and information about who they're fighting or how it's going is hidden from the population; they call the enemy the "Darktide" and just know it needs to be kept at bay. Naturally the soldiers fighting an endless war against terrifying space horrrors in secret and without any real recognition back home can become resentful and the entire Moebian VIth regiment turned to chaos after being thrown into the meatgrinder too long.
Hopefully that gives some context to the track names and a story link with the music!

Digging the analysis! One of the best things about this whole soundtrack is how it's perfectly designed to move from one track to any of the others in response to the game action. That's why the beginning and ends are so amorphous and filled with possibility. The tracks aren't tied to levels, but situations. Gauntlet comes thumping in when your team is working on a hacking or analysis set piece and have to fight off hordes while still getting the work done. The Fringe fills the lulls between big fights, but the threat is still out there. Disposal unit collapses on the players when the boss or a monster shows up, and it all blends and shifts back and forth SO seamlessly, it's amazing. The sound design in Darktide generally is incredible, too, from the weapons firing and hitting flesh, to the howls of the pox-hounds and click-click-click before a flamethrower lights up... sooooo good!

The carnival is the drug capital of hive city tertium. I think the distortion of immortal imperium is supposed to represent how these stims are used by the factory workers to drown out the influence of the imperium. But stims are also a very important component for the imperium to continue its rule so it could also represent how far the imperium has fallen.

The carnival theme is very fitting with the obscura den and shady hooka lounges. That arabic style wailing seems to imply this is a very shady side of the bazaar, and someone could easily walk in and never come back out. Almost a slaanesh kind of area, maybe taken over by nurgle cultists who took over slaaneshi drug trade and converted it into a plague carrying enterprise. When you walk around the Carnival, some spots seem like nightclubs or drug dens that are no longer even being used. This feels like an exorcism, the wailing horn is kind of like the daemons and heretical influence, which is being wiped out by the might of the imperium by force, but the ghostly imperium theme at the end suggests even the Imperium might lose their soul fighting this fight

Light of the Imperial and Gauntlet are obvious tops but Fall of Empires just surprised me the most as a perfect horde song I can’t get enough of all these songs god I can’t wait for more update! Jesper Kyd will make Warhammer music for the rest of his life, it is his destiny!

Hello Marco I’ve been watching your videos for a very long time now. I absolutely love your content. Your commentary is always incredibly insightful and it really always makes me look at songs in a completely different light.
I know you mainly do video game music reactions but I’d absolutely love to see your opinion and reaction on my all time favorite band Rammstein. They’re a German rock/industrial metal band and the lead singer was classically trained by an opera singer. In their song „wollt ihr das Bett in flammen sehen“ they used samples from the Doom soundtrack, to stay on the topic of video games. And the song „Mein Herz Brennt - Piano Version“ really showcases the lead singers vocal control. I also think „Morgenstern“ and „OK“ would be two you’d enjoy musically.

I would highly recommend Jespar Kyd's work on the old Hitman games. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (not to be confused with the new HITMAN 2 from 2018) is 80% purely orchestral music which was his first time he ever composing for an orchestra (in this case it was the Budapest orchestra.) In Hitman: Contracts he starts with the fusion of classical and dark electronic in his career but overall leans more into the dark electronic side. In Hitman: Blood Money the soundtrack eases away a bit from dark electronic to more balanced combination with few of the great tracks being mostly orchestral with choir. Listening to those is a great way to see how he developed as a composer 20 year ago.
All of the soundtracks are worth listening to in whole but I'll give a short list of the tracks that stand out to me from those games:
    Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
    - Hitman 2 Main Title
    - 47 Makes a Decision
    - Japanese Snow Castle
    - 47 in St. Petersburg
    - Arabian Dance
    Hitman: Contracts
    - White Room & Main Title
    - Streets of Hong Kong
    - Double Ballers
    - Slaughterhouse (This one is extra dark sounding, almost like it's from a horror movie)
    Hitman: Blood Money
    - Apocalypse
    - Secret Invasion
    - Hunter
    - Action in Paris
    - Amb Zone
    - Vegas
    - Rocky Mountains
Few extra of his track I would like to bring up that aren't part of the Hitman franchise:
Vermintide 2 - Fortunes of War
    Assasin's Creed 2 - Venice Rooftops
Borderlands 2 - Boom Bewm & Captain Flynt Boss (Don't know the exact name of this track but plays when you fight those bosses)
Borderlands 3 - Bandits At Jacobs Estate
    Borderlands 3 - Borderlands 3 Menu Theme
...and many more but I don't want to make this list *too* long
