Gonna be honest, I did just watch both parts at 2x speed, but I enjoyed all of it. I'm currently planning my first big trip and your confidence alone is encouraging. It's always nice seeing you in by subscription box, hope you post more videos!
+Mo David Thanks for following along, Mo! Good luck on the trip.
Chris your work is incredible. You put all your experiences in this videos. Your photography speaks so well of your method and organization. Congrats for your outstanding work, and if you come to Argentina, I will be more than happy to be your Guide. We always love to go to climbing expedition with mi friends.
+Ignacio P Thank you!
Awesome thanks for showing your gear recommendations. Nicely organized and prepared. 👍🏼👌🏼
Hello Chris, I've always liked to go on backpack trips and to travel around with my van/motorcycle. Your work inspires me to travel more evrtime i look at your photos. Ur not just takin' awesome pictures but u manage to capture magic atmospheres so really well. That makes the difference! Thank you and keep up the good work! Regards from Germany, Nils
Super awesome reviews Chris! Really helpful and some epic insights into some clever bits and bobs I never knew existed :D
+Danny Copeland Thanks Danny.
Love your work Chris I bought an a6000 after watching your review with dp review. Couldn't be happier with it
+AdventureVibes Nice
Haha...I love how you are actually carrying a foam roller! It's an item I miss most when I'm on the road... Triggerpoint is a good one.
I ended up buying a granite gear backpack, polarizing filter,, and a lifestraw after watching these two videos aha but thanks for posting them!
+Carlos Santillana I'm sure all of that gear will come in handy
Both of these videos are awesome, I've always wondered what you bring on trips. You've implanted the bug in me Chris :)
Here's my question: I'm a college student, I've shot sports for a D1 university (Arizona) for 4 years now. I've always wanted to transition into what you do as a photog, what is a good exercise/way to start shooting travel/landscape/adventure? Shooting sports has gotten me into a creative rut with its repetitive nature. Thanks!
+Colin Prenger Hello Colin,
I started in a similar way to you. I used to shoot surf, which eventually allowed me to travel to remote locations and shoot not just the surfing action. I enjoyed shooting the life around surfing. The travels there, the backdrops, the landscapes etc. This then eventually lead to shooting more adventure, outdoor work.
Check out my FAQ page, there's tons of information about my past and how I made it to where I am these days:

Hope that answers you questions.
Feel free to send me an email at info@chrisburkard.com if you have any further questions.
Hey Chris! I'm heading to Alaska soon! It will be my first big photography trip. I will be near Anchorage. Do you have any must see places or things to do? I would love to hear back from you again! You have really inspired me to follow my dream! Thank You for your time.
Hey Chris,
When you fly with the 3DR Solo, do you take it as a checked bag? or a carry-on?
+Jason Murray Media I try to take it as carry-on, but usually have a lot of other gear and tend to protect it as well as I can and end up checking it in.
+Chris Burkard Studio haha found my exact question, thank you for the reply
really awesome video, quality gear really enjoyed watching
Hey Chris, thanks for the videos! You've always inspired me to follow my passion. When you travel to Iceland, Switzerland or wherever you're heading, where do you sleep and keep all of your gear?
+Keaten Tuttle depends, usually I crash in the car.
Hey Chris - do you use different sleeping bags for different climates? Whats the coldest you tent in?
+Gregg Jaden Definitely. I've camped in temperatures near 0, however it's not something I typically prefer to do.
love the videos, huge inspiration!
+justin ross thanks!
Hey Chris - thanks for taking the time to make both vids! What would you bring on a PCT thru hike if you wanted to capture video and photos? I'm leaning towards an a6300, mic, zeiss 16-70, and a big ol' battery pack. Cheers, Zach.
+zach rotondo Sounds like a pretty good setup! The Rode VideoMic Pro is solid for docu-style filmmaking. As for lenses, I'd stick with primes if you can. A wide and portrait (preferably macro) would be sick. If you're leaning towards only one lens, I'd stick with the 24-70 or a prime 35mm. Your call!
+Chris Burkard Studio Solid! Thanks for the advice!!
I went with the 6300 and 19mm prime and finished the PCT this past October. It was perfect! Captured some amazing photos and video of friends and the trail. Unfortunately I busted the camera about 2k mile in around Bend, OR. I think it was the weather. Long shot... but... do you have a used camera kicking around I could buy haha. Cost to fix is basically a new 6300 body :(
Chris, I'm currently a student at Cal Poly and following your work has been a huge inspiration to me through photography!! What's a word of advice for a college student like me who doesn't have that much money to spend on a whole lot of camera gear?
+Ian Johnson Really the best camera you have is the one that is always with you. You have to make way with what you got ;)
Hi Chris, great video, what kind of two-way radios are those, why'd you pick them, and do you like them?
+Larry Hanson They are the Motorola Talkabout MS350R waterproof radios
Love the videos mate !! When you take the drone in the backpack do you check that in under the plane or take it with you as carry on??
+Liam Riley We carry it on first, but if not then we check it in.
Been watching a lot of reviews for the Sony A7RII, Canon EOS 5DS and Nikon D810. Notice you love the Sony range. I've had a Sony Nex 7 for a couple of years just for my very amateur shots and it does what I need it to except in low light. How do you rate the Sony A7RII for your action shots? Also, have you had any overheating issues like as reported?
The a7rii is what I use for about 70% of my work. Its definitely my go to camera when on shoots. Ive also never had any overheating troubles. Hope this helps!
Is it worth investing only in an a6000 instead of a DSLR if i'm on a budget? Is the a6000 sufficient for night shooting and long exposure?
+Peyton Walbeck The a6000 is a great camera. But for longer exposures I think the 35mm sensors on the a7 models will give you a better result.
I love the a6000 for action and sport though because it's super fast.
Great video. I noticed you have what looks like a mountainsmith Tour and a mountainsmith day pack on the wall in the background. Since you have the day, the daylight, and the tour, What mountainsmith product might you suggest for a camera/day hike bag for a Nikon D500 using a tamron150-600 for wildlife. I want one but am not sure of the size vs pack feel for each model.
Thanks
Hey Michael! I love all of my packs, but for your setup I would recommend the day pack. It should fit that lens in there snug and it is comfortable in weight distribution. Cheers!
Thanks for the info, That was the one I was looking the hardest at due to size.
Hey Chris, thanks for the info. What type of radios do you recommend?
+Brenda Bergreen They are the Motorola Talkabout MS350R waterproof radios
Great video Chris! When climbing or backpacking how are you carrying all of your camera equipment and hiking/climbing equipment?
+Adam Mowery I will usually pack as little as possible. Whenever I head out I will repack and and leave the gear I don't need for that job/hike/climb at base.
That I understand, I guess what Im asking is what bags are you carrying them in. For instance I often have my backpack with my climbing equipment and my tripod in or on it then I have a fanny pack in front with all my camera gear, but its a pain in the butt.
+Adam Mowery I really like the Black Diamond pack mentioned in part 1. Thats why I like the Crumpler bags because I can put them in any bag I want.
+Chris Burkard Studio Do you use any of the F-Stop bags for backpacking? Or have you have used any of them and reverted back to the black diamond?
What are you shooting with in the water? Do you just have a water housing for your a7r?
+NoAnchorTV I use the a6000 in the water with a Meikon housing
+Chris Burkard Studio very cool its cheep! Which of your lenses fit in that thing? It's rad.
Chris, thinking about going to Iceland in the fall, would you recommend it?
YES!
this question is like asking if you want food when you're hungry haha have a great trip yo!
Hi Chris. I noticed you pack a lot of valuable-looking stuff into your checked bag. Have you ever experienced any problems with theft when flying? I always find it difficult to trust whoever is handling my stuff when I fly.
+Zoe Y I've been lucky so far. I try to lock bags with valuables whenever they leave my sight.
Unfortunately being a photographer on the road means that I have to carry a lot of expensive gear... there's no real way around it.
what do you use to put all of your camera stuff that is water proof when you go on kayak missions so theres no water at all getting on your sony's?
+Logan Gallagher The Granite Gear compressed bag is water proof ;)
Very informative!
+Wyatt Ellsworth Sweet! Glad you liked it.
Hey Chris, I can't seem to find the exact Granite Gear clothing bag you use. Which exact bag is that? Thanks!
+Tommy Sisbarro www.granitegear.com/travel/duffels/30-packable-wheeled-duffel.html
Chris Burkard Studio Thanks. I was referring to the smaller vibrant blue waterproof GraniteGear bag that you take with you on Kayak trips. Link for that?
+Tommy Sisbarro It's the Slacker Packer
How far away from your car do you hike? That's a ton of stuff to trek far with.
Exciting setup ! I can't imagine how tired my back becomes if I carry the same material myself. ^_^
How do you compare your SonyS to Canon/Nikon ? I started off with Nikon years ago (with a couple of lens) and these days the new cameras are getting smaller and lighter (compare to my D610 now). >_<
Thank you.
+Chun Yi Chow I cant really compare them since I don't shoot on them much, sorry!
hi chris, i have canon 6d and 16-35 f4 L lens, i want to switch a7ii, do you recommend continue to use canon lens or sold that and buy sony 16-35 f4? by the which one do you prefer a7r or a7ii for landscape and architecture
Hey great question. I would suggest to carry over completely to Sony if you are in the position to! The a7ii and a7r are both great camera bodies, I would prefer the a7ii for landscape and architecture.
How many sherpas do you have to be able to take a foam roller on wilderness trips?! :D
If he had sherpas to carry his gear, he wouldn't need a foam roller!
what model of western digital hard drives do you use?
+Matthew Rice all of them! haha, usually the passport air's there.
how big is that bag?
Chris, how do the walkie talkies take the place of cell phones?
At times if you are in a area that has poor to no cell service the best way of communication would be radio. You wouldn't have to rely on the satellites for service. Cheers!
+Chris Burkard Studio I'm completely ignorant when it comes to walkie-talkies... do you use it as a safety back up? I mean, I'm not sure who you'd "call" besides the person who has the other one.
I'm coming back to NZ in the near future and will b3 hiking some remote locations. So radio signals help you communicate with?
By the way, I'd live to see a review on your camera backpacks for multi-day hikes. Follow you on Instagram but just found your You Tube so you may already have one.
What's the name of your Patagonia vest ?
+TukanLongboarding www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-light-and-variable-jacket?p=27215-0
sweet thanks !
Do u also carry the sony E-mount 70-200 F4 ?
+Nils Paillard Yes I do!
+Chris Burkard Studio What lens would be the best suited for mountain shooting (mounteneering climbing hight action sports) .
+Nils Paillard That lens you just mentioned is awesome. Also the 24-70mm is solid.
+Chris Burkard Studio Thanks!!!!!! Do you have any vids coming up ? ;p
+Nils Paillard not on my youtube channel particularly, but I'm in post-production for a film I shot back in December!
Getting away from F-stop gear bags?
+Brady Myers They are still great bags!
anybody else catch some Tame Impala playing in the background halfway though the vid?
