Iceland is beautiful but Nate’s Mum steals the show. Every time I see her in these videos, I see such a beautiful soul. And Kara well done! It takes a while to feel the “biting point” when going up a hill in a manual/stick shift. You did great for the first time and that too in a Truck! Loved this series.
one of my first cars was a standard, one hill trick i learned... put the emergency brake on then you dont have to worry about holding the brake down or rolling back, then its easy to start letting clutch out and giving gas, when you feel it start to grab, release the e-brake and away you go!
The Hand Brake Hill Start is a right of passage for drivers, thankfully it's part of the tuition here in the UK. That said, it was painful to watch, that poor clutch!

I like Nate's comparison of stick shift / manual driving as a dance. Once you get the concept of it, it's about finding that rhythm, movement and flow between the brake, gas, stick and clutch.
Kara as a professional truck driver I have to say you did fairly well on that hill and needing to restart. It’s not easy. But for an inexperienced manual driver you did amazing. The key is to remaining calm, the rest will come!
I learned to drive a manual at age 16. They were cheaper cars, so us poor kids mostly started out that way. Lots of tears and dad yelling non stop. Lol it's a skill you'll always have once you learn it!

My big brother bought me a BMW 2002 manual transmission and left it at the house. My parents were away on vacation, and how to drive it? Another brother took me to road under a tressle that had a big dip, like an inside out hill, down up. He made me go up and down that dip until I could do it without rolling back. Kara, you brought back some fun memories with my big brothers. Before my brother took me to the dip, he had me driving around the block and my friends would come out and laugh as my little car would buck. That clutch was so sensitive, I had to let it just slowly and gas it up so the car wouldn't buck, but even in first gear, that car would go so fast I'd want to stop. Oh the memories. And you in a BIG truck! Congrats on that.
Kara! I’m so proud of you for getting up that hill!!!! I know so well the stress of trying to start up a hill in a stick shift and having to make multiple attempts. I’m so glad you didn’t give up. I loved everything else about this video, too, just had to give Kara some mad props.
I always knew y’all were major couple goals! The frustration and communication and laughter during Kara’s drive is so telling of your love and friendship ❤️❤️
Kara, How to get going when on a hill. 1) hold the break and slowly let out clutch until you feel the truck try to move. Then hold the clutch at that position. 2) Release break and start giving it gas. 3) Slowly let out clutch the rest of the way and boom you're rolling.
I’d amend (1) with: “until you feel the truck trying to move and/or the engine starts to get bogged down”. My overall explanation would be that for each hill, there is a combination of clutch position and an amount of gas that will keep the vehicle stationary, neither rolling back nor moving forward. After moving off the brake pedal, you have to get to that position as quickly as possible. Once you are there, you add gas and you move forward, letting the clutch out fully as you reach a sufficient speed.
Kara is doing great!!!! I can’t believe her first time driving a stick shift is in that enormous beast 😱 KUDOS TO KARA ❤❤❤ I’m Gen X, I learned to drive at age 12. Had a motorcycle by 14. My parents made us learn to drive an automatic & a stick shift before we could test for our drivers licenses. We also knew how to change a tire by then. Now in my 50s, I’m so thankful my parents did that. But I still don’t think I could drive that beast. Pretty sure I’d think we were tipping over all the time 🤪 I’m SO IMPRESSED with these gorgeous & BRAVE ladies 🙌🏼💕
Kara if that ever happens to you again, you can put on the parking brake and keep it on until you get past that first part where it wants to roll back. Then just release the brake as you press on the gas. It seems like it’s one more thing to think about, but it takes away that panicky rolling back issue. You did amazing considering your experience with a stick, and I think it is absolutely so cool that you did not want to give up!

12:32 sorry to say that, but Nate is teaching her wrong. Kara, you need to let the clutch out, when you feel the truck shake a little bit take the foot off the break, then hit the gas pedal!
Yes! And the nose of het car goes up just slightly when you hit the perfect spot! So you can actually see when to hit the gas more so you can move forward! If you let the clutch come up more after the sweet spot the car will die. Practice will help but you can actually see and feel it. Love from The Netherlands ❤
Nooo! Handbrake on, left foot all the way down on the clutch, right foot lightly on the gas. Pull the handbrake up but don't release it, then increase the gas gradually while you lift up the clutch. As you hit the bite point increase the gas and slowly release the handbrake. You have to put one pedal down as you lift the other pedal up, sort of in a seesaw motion. Any quick switch between brake and gas isn't going to give you a control on the gas and will either make you roll backwards on a hill or kangaroo jump or stall, or all three!
I'm still baffled to why they didn't use the handbrake? I can see it in some of the frames. Handbrake to secure the car then let go slowly when the van gets to the bite point. I'm in the UK so how were taught here might differ to the US
Omg Kara I’m super impressed with your perseverance with trying to get up the hill in that massive manual truck. And Nate’s Patience and well sort of direction was also a lesson in great relationship communication.

My dad had a few rules before I could get license. Know how to check my oil, how to jump a car, had to change my tire and how to drive a standard. He made sure his daughters would be able to handle anything. He was a CDL driver all his life and so grateful to him for teaching all these skills. I have had to teach many women how to change a tire and jump a car because they were stranded. Also the scenario that my dad gave me for making sure I could drive a standard happened. In college I was the only sober driver and the only car available was a standard. Shocked the hell out of the guys when I jumped in and went let’s go.
I am a woman that has been operating heavy equipment for almost 20 years. I grew up in rual Missouri and my family was poor. Gas was cheap so for fun we drove country roads and I got to play in creeks. As I got older like 6-8 years old I sat on my dad's lap to drive. By 12 I could drive a "stick" by myself. I think every woman should at least know how to drive a manual even if it's not very well. In case of an emergency she should at least know how. Also learning a clutch is easier then you think. The trick is letting the clutch out as much as you can before taking your foot off the break. Hope this helps! Love watching!!
“Good Wilber”!! I love these videos with Nate’s parents! They are as much fun as watching Kara & Nate! I’m loving the series in Iceland, it is absolutely gorgeous!
Here's to the girls driving! Woot-woot! Well done gals. I love the design of the truck, inside and out. That hot springs was like a fantasy come to life. At first, I thought you were running to take a cold plunge. I was waiting for Popsicle Kara to get back to the truck. It was amazing how beautiful Iceland was! I love my portable induction cooktops. Thanks for part 1 & 2. This was a warm but icy land.
Ok Kara here’s how it’s done ….. step one pull up your hand brakes with one foot on clutch and the other on brake pedal …. Step two put vehicle into first gear …. Step three take your foot off the brake pedal and give the accelerator a little press until you hear the engine vibration changes don’t worry because your hand brake will Prevent the vehicle from rolling back …. Step four release the hand brake and slowly raise the clutch pedal…. Simple
It's super dope that you hang out with your parents like that. One day you'll really have to take care of them so enjoy those moments and I'm glad you share then with your RUclips family
I love watching the girls learn how to drive a manual. I am 14 and have been driving a manual for 2 years. It is a hard skill to master and I still struggle sometimes.❤😂
Driving a stick shift in a giant vehicle is INSANE. My husband and I both learned, but we had nothing but automatics until we switched to ev's 8 years ago. The kid has really only ever known an ev. Watching them drive a stick reminded me why they absolutely suck for city traffic. At least they were in the literal middle of nowhere Also, his parents are ADORABLE!

Everything about that hill start was hilarious, Quick tip, just find the friction point with either the park brake engaged or keep your foot on the brake and then slowly accelerate releasing the brake of course .
Kara, the trick to starting a hill is to start letting out in the clutch slowly until you feel it grabbing. Then let off the brake and switch to the gas.

Simple
I just have to look at nates dad and i giggle. Love his mom also
It's super dope that you hang out with your parents like that. One day you'll really have to take care of them so enjoy those moments and I'm glad you share then with your RUclips family
I love watching the girls learn how to drive a manual. I am 14 and have been driving a manual for 2 years. It is a hard skill to master and I still struggle sometimes.❤😂
14?! Dang lol
Is that legal at 14? What country are you in?
Kara did so good on the hill......I was learning to drive manual and came to hill, I got so nervous I just started crying 😂😂😂😂 I eventually got it.
Kara and Nate, your videos brighten up my Saturday! Not only are yall funny but you just like make me realize how beautiful life is
The dance between the clutch and the accelerator is best way to describe hill starts. Loved this episode!
So impressed with Kara’s determination to drive the truck. Way to go!
Driving a stick shift in a giant vehicle is INSANE. My husband and I both learned, but we had nothing but automatics until we switched to ev's 8 years ago. The kid has really only ever known an ev.
Watching them drive a stick reminded me why they absolutely suck for city traffic. At least they were in the literal middle of nowhere
Also, his parents are ADORABLE!
I love y’all’s channel so much!! y’all are my favorites🧡🫶🏻
Nate, to have your Mom and Dad on this trip is memorable. You will remember and treasure these moments for the rest of your life. Thank you for taking us along this journey.
All the best Guys. JIm and Harriet
So I was watching your first videos and I couldn’t help but to tell you that from then and now, is and still very entertaining 😊 but… the way Nate looks at you when you are just speaking about your experience is exactly the way he looks at you now is just heart melting. My husband and I love watching you both and wish you the best. Much love❤ Dallas and LeeAnn.
Yalls dynamic is top notch. Also Kara’s sleepy eyes in the morning is so cute! But seriously, the way you two speak to each other is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.
Excellent video 10 out of 10. Your videos just keep getting better and better quality over quantity, absolutely.
Loved, Nate's parents on this trip. They are just a natural making videos. As you guys are
I found your channel a week ago… yeah I know why’d it take me so long… but I have been binge watching video ever since… and loving every minute… all your trips looked epic and this one didn’t disappoint x
Nate I love your parents! Does your dad know how funny he is! 😂Kara I loved your determination on learning the stick shift. I've always wanted to learn myself!
What a beautiful country ❤ Nate's Mom and Dad should have their own RUclips channel it would be a hit for sure 😂
I just love your Momma and Daddy! I'm a Ky girl and they remind me of my parents so much!! Just really good people. ❤❤❤
Kara’s laugh after her 7th attempt was so funny! I was not laughing at you; I was laughing with you😃.
Thank you for taking us on this amazing, beautiful experience.
Nate’s Mum and Dar are absolute legends! 🌻🇦🇺
Everything about that hill start was hilarious, Quick tip, just find the friction point with either the park brake engaged or keep your foot on the brake and then slowly accelerate releasing the brake of course
.
loved the trip with Nate's parents amazing scenery
Fab video again good to see you enjoying Iceland we are there next year so we are looking forward to it. Thanks for the invite.
i gasp everytime y’all post, absolutely makes my day. Also LOOVVVEEE the hour or more videos
Kara, the trick to starting a hill is to start letting out in the clutch slowly until you feel it grabbing. Then let off the brake and switch to the gas.
0:12 Premier Pro users can relate 😅 love you guys can't wait to watch this video ❤
James and Christy are the best! Definitely need them in more videos!!
My favorite travel channel by far
What a fab trip. I loved how determined Kara was to get up that hill. I've never driven an automatic. I'm not sure I'd know how! Family trips are just the best.
Way to go Kara. I learned to drive a manual in high school a thousand years ago. I am so proud of you for getting that monster up that hill!
LOVE Kara's determination on the hill!❤💪
Nate, your parents are so in shape and have taken care of themselves, totally awesome!!
I love Nate’s parents there the best and top it off with Kara’s energy it’s the best ❤❤❤❤❤
Yay, get to start my Saturday with part 2 of Overlanding Iceland with Kara and Nate! I would love to try to drive one of these! We owned manual transmission vehicles the first 30 years of our marriage because they always seemed to be the most cost effective to buy. This would be so much fun!
In LOVE with how Kara did not roll back to the flat surface. She said "no." Good for you, love that determination and not getting shaken. 🎉
I love y’all’s videos and Nate’s parents are so awesome and sweet I absolutely adore both y’all’s parents!!
Yayyyy Kara! Way to go with that clutch! I drove stick for years before needing to get an SUV. Once you get the hang of that balance Nate was talking about between the gas and the clutch nothing can stop you. You did it!!
Love y’all’s videos so so much, been following since Zanzibar Island like 5-6 years ago! Keep on vibing and being positive. Stay strong Kara, you got this girl.
As a guy who's basically only ever owned manual cars, you forget how tricky that dance of clutch and gas is. And to learn it in a massive truck is no mean feat! Well done
