  • This week I'm in Tuscany on my honeymoon with a chance to do some early morning street photography, and I'm reunited with one of my favourite cameras I've ever owned - an 11 year old Lumix that cost just over $60. This is off the back of my video where I was hunting for the perfect travel camera, and lots of you suggested I try this rather than the Sony A7C or the Fuji X100V I tried in that video.

    I bought a GX1 about ten years ago. It made it obvious to me that MFT had a great balance between size/weight and image quality. In the meantime, I think MFT has become so good that it outclasses a lot of APS-C cameras in the size/weight vs. image quality equation. I’ve been through several Canon crop sensor cameras and a 5D III, but I’m only using MFT today. I can see some pros might need FF camera, but I don’t. Thanks, James, and thank you Panasonic! 👏👏👏

    • @thephotoyak
      @thephotoyak 2 года назад +2

      The thought of a MFT is tempting sometimes, but assuming you want a EVF, the cameras really aren't lighter or even smaller than many FF mirrorless. Lots of FF primes well under 200 grams as well. I'm pretty excited to see Nikon's 26mm Z prime, not released yet, but it looks like a true pancake.

    • @scottfineshriber5051
      @scottfineshriber5051 2 года назад +4

      @@thephotoyak you’ll appreciate the size & weight advantage of MFT if you want to use wide aperture zooms and even prime lenses. Even if you buy an APS-C camera, if you want the best lenses they are mostly FF and dwarf MFT lenses that give similar framing and light transmission. The cameras are not much smaller, but the whole kit is.

    The GX1 is still a very capable little camera. For me the only real negatives are the low light performance (which is fine if you stick to black & white) and probably the lack of stabilisation (again that's not really an issue in good light). As an everyday, general purpose carry around, I love it.

    Nice little camera. One of my favorite cameras is the Olympus OM-D E-M5. It's a 2012 camera, but like your Lumix, it doesn't feel old because it was so ahead of it's time. Sometimes I like to put a 14mm pancake lens on it, which let's it fit in a pocket, and leave my big full frame at home. When I bought it, it was going for around 200USD, but that was over a year ago, so probably cheaper now.

    I’ve come to realise that so much about consumer photography is about the experience when shooting. The fact that you can buy a used camera that is so much fun to use for such a small cost is a great way to combat gear fixation. I recently took out my Panasonic LX3 again and had a great time shooting with it. 99% of our image viewing is done on devices that can’t distinguish between a 9 mb image and a 20 mb image. For non pros I think the point is just keep shooting and learning no matter what the camera is. Great channel BTW.

But I absolutely hated shooting on my A7iii, so much so that I stopped shooting for nearly 2 years. Sold all Sony gear and bought a Fuji X-T2 and what a game changer. But, my old (mint) Lumix GX1 is so much more spontaneous to capture a moment than my phone. Add modern editing software, old Lumix cameras like my G1 and GX1 bring back the feel of photography rather then just taking pictures. Note: I buy and sell with MPB. I'm always impressed when the offer more than their estimate for my trade in equipment after inspection!

    Love the nostalgia of old equipment. My dad recently passed and as we're cleaning out the house, we're finding gems of old equipment, some of which I knew as a kid, others new-found treasures -- I now know where I got my camera obsession from -- my parents! The cleanout helped me realize I need to clear things out, and I sold a bunch of equipment to start anew (from Canon to Sony). A few things I kept, and will probably use again similar to how you are, but old and new, gives you great perspective.

    The Lumix GX85 and 20mm/1.7 was my favorite travel and street combo for quite some time. I fell totally in love with 40mm FF equivalent because of it. For various reasons I left the MFT eco-system, but I now own several 40mm lenses and cameras with this equivalent focal length. Currently my most favorite travel and street camera is the Ricoh GR IIIx (APS-C, 40mm FF equivalent). Image quality is truly amazing and it literally fits in your pocket. I almost never leave my home without it.

      After watching this I am interested in the GX85 and the 20 mm lens and both can be had for just over $500 used. I currently shoot with a Pentax K70 and a 35 F2.0 (50 mil equivalent). I like the idea of the Lumix been about 12 ounces lighter than my current setup but when I was talking to a friend he said if you are going for lighter and smaller you mights as well go for the Ricoh. My friend makes sense, the difference between the Lumix and my Pentax may not be enough to make it worth it. The Ricoh makes sense except for the price.

      @@TheophilusCarlos I was very happy with my MFT equipment which at the end of the cycle included a G9 and GX9. But I also owned a (heavy) Nikon DSLR System. When the Z system was launched I had to make a choice. Stay within the versatile MFT or move on to the mirrorless Z Full Frame system. In the end IQ was the deciding factor and so I now use a Nikon Z7 and Z6II for more demanding photography and the pocketable GRIIIx for street. I also use a couple of analog film cameras in medium format and 35mm for more fun and style related stuff. It was the right choice for me and I am pretty happy with my setup now. Now there must be thousands of digital cameras to chose from. Then as now, nearly all cameras are capable of rendering high quality images. A $20 thrift store find can produce images similar the the latest $5000 camera and with the advantage of digital photo imaging, the differences can be virtually undetectable.

    6:35 if you start wanting a viewfinder, then the GX85 is a better option. The GX1 ends up a bit chunky with the EVF attached and the cost starts to approach the GX85 with a built in EVF. I bought a silver GX1 for work in 2013 and it is still in use today. In 2013, the feature set including the pop-up flash AND a standard hot shoe was way better than the alternatives from Sony (remember NEX?) or Samsung (they made cameras once...).

    A GX1 was my first M43 camera. I used it as a travel camera before I got an a6000. I used the a6000 and a 550D for wedding, event, and landscape photography. I still have the a6000 and 550D but no longer use them, I do however still use my GX1 on occasion. I now have a G9, G95, and a GX85 for my main photographic needs now days but I'll always have a soft spot for the GX1.

    I look back on photos I took my GX1 and marvel at how good they were. That was the camera that started me questioning the value of Canon’s APS-C cameras. Now, I own LUMIX MFT and FF only. APS-C seems superfluous-IQ is not commensurate with the extra size and weight, but not as good as FF. Belated thanks for this video. 🙏

    We have enough old Lumix fans here to form our own annual convention. I've put a lot of miles on my GX8+20mm and didn't even realize the GX models were rocking it that far back. In 2010 I was shooting a LX3 which is a classic in its own right. Everyone here seems to miss their old setup. I don't sell my cameras, I archive them in my own museum of old tech,.however I do miss that LX3 as my toddler daughter dropped it and its light was extinguished forever.

    This was a fun video. The best camera deal I ever bought was the Lumix GX85 that came with the 12-32 and 45-150 lenses for $597. I added a larger grip to it and it has become my street photography camera. There are lots of less expensive travel/street cameras available that can be bought at low prices that can make photography fun.

    Funny synchronicity... A month ago I realised that now I'm not always carrying around a DSLR+lens (> 1.7 kg), I'm using my iPhone as a camera, but that also means: limited zoom range.
    So I looked around and bought a second hand Lumix DMC-TZ6 (EUR 20, including charger, SD card and case !) with Leica lens.

    That's pretty much how I got into MFT. Went on holiday and my DSLR was hopeless, threw it in a drawer and used an Olympus TG-3 all week. Came back and decided I needed a travel bridge camera. Well they were useless and expensive; only a 1inch sensor and cost a fortune. So I looked on mpb and found a Panasonic GX7 & 14-140mm zoom and made my own MFT bridge camera. Well the results blew me away and were better than my DSLR so I bought the Olympus 17mm f1.8 & 45mm f1.8 and sold off all the DSLR equipment (thank you mpb). Well like you I have moved on to Sony with A7ii & A6500 but like you, I hanker back and my favourite walk around camera is still a little graphite Sony A6000 with 20mm f2.8 pancake lens. Have fun ;-)

    Old camera does not equal bad camera at all!
    My Canon 7D is still pretty dang nice. If I try to sell it now people would give me 100 buck for it. Might as wel keep it and bust it out on occassion when there's some sporty stuff to shoot. Trying to sell my 300mm f4 for more than a year now but it's not been very successful.
    My X-T1 is old now but it's still a great camera. I can easily shoot the pictures that I envision so even tough new cameras are pretty advanced I could do the same thing with all of them. All I need is the three basic controls to vary the exposure and i'm good 90% of the time. The rest is up to you minds eye to figure out.

    Hi James, sorry to ask, you may have done it before, but could you quickly sum up your talking head shots setup (you're shooting with your A7C, right?) Been shooting 35mm SLR's (and medium format SLRs) through to DSLR's since the 1980's but sometime about 2011 out of curiosity I bought a used GF1 with the 20mm lens from a friend for a nice price - about $300 Aud. I loved that kit but still kept mostly using my DSLR,
    But a couple of years later after trying to travel "light" backpacking a couple of times for a few months in Japan I vowed never, ever, to do that again with a DSLR (with the Holy Trinity of 2.8 lenses just TOO heavy and inconvenient).
    Fortunately this vow coincided with the release of the GX7 and my next trip I traveled with the GX7, the kit lens it came with (14-42) and and the 20mm 1.7 and many many times I'd pick up my camera bag I'd have the urge to have to open the bag to check if there was anything in the bag it was so light.
    Now days while I still have a full frame DSLR and a G7 and G9 most of my photography, travel or otherwise, is done with GX7 , I bought a second GX7 body second hand and then purchased a both a used G3 kit ($89 AUD) and a GF3 ($69 Aud) just for their super light & small lenses included in the price (a second 14-42 and a 45-150 for the G3 and 14mm pancake for the GF3) .... while the G3 basically got put away and never really used I ended up using the GF3 A LOT, seriously A LOT traveling along side my GX7 for backpacking trips, as my back up camera, and with either the 14 or 20 mm pancake lenses as my "put it in the pocket when just out walking camera" and my "super discreet shooting" camera - also helped that the GF3 used the same battery as the GX7 so just one charger and a shared pool of batteries
    Loved that little GF3 and it was my "small but mighty camera that could" second camera for several trips including many many months of traveling through Asia.
    It is now semi retired but I still use the GX7 which is my favourite digital camera for light travel as it is in the sweet spot, cheap enough now not to be upset if lost/stolen/broken, very light & small (even if not as light & small as the GF3), reasonably feature packed, full set of manual control dials, and better than "good enough" image quality.
    So when backpacking around Europe for 5 months a few years back and when recently/currently motorcycle touring around my country both the G9 and the 5Div get left at home and I traveled with one or two of the GX7's with the two pancake lenses and a "pick 'n' mix" of a couple of zooms (say maybe the Olympus 7-14 and Lumix 12-60 Vario for urban & landscape oriented trips , maybe the 12-60 Vario and the Lumix 100-400 Vario (bit/lot unbalanced on the GX7 but hey it's an acceptable compromise) if I'm outback and I'm sure there will be wildlife)
    someday OM and Lumix may kill the MFT system off from their line up but I will keep using mine for travel until they die (and I can no longer buy reliable used replacements)

  • @johnbuckingham6895
    @johnbuckingham6895 2 года назад +3

    You might consider getting the more up to date version, the GX9. It's also compact, uses a 20MP sensor, and it has a viewfinder plus a really useful exposure adjustment dial on top. In fact, I much prefer using it to my G9 (which feels bulky and too clunky in comparison, plus it lacks the GX9's exposure adjustment - weird move, Panasonic). I bought a great little stick-on grip for it via Amazon, and that made the GX9 even more comfortable/enjoyable to take with me. Anyway, delightful location and a solid video as usual. Ciao, James.
