It was interesting to see Charles Hill's shipyard where my grandfather worked as a ship's plater. He lived with us in my parent's house. The NORWEST was built in 1955 and I fancy I saw him at work in the film. He died in 1956 when I was aged 3.
I grew up in Bristol at the end of the 50's and early 60's. Fascinating film, so many land marks now changed beyond recognition, a totally different world. Quite literally brought tears to my eyes.
Wonderful images. I was in the crowd when HM the Queen opened Chew Valley Lake. I was only 5 but I remember seeing a pretty lady in the biggest blackest car that I had ever seen. Thank you for these films.
I and my school, had the Day off to go see the Queen. As I lived in Bedmister, I walked to Temple meads and Redcliffe St Marys' Church, and saw her pass by, waving to us, in a open Horse Drawn Carriage, and we ran along side to Redcliffe. I have photographs.
Bristols council certainly did more damage than the bombs pulling down beautiful buildings and many lovely villas in bishopston all flattened for rabbit hutches . Now the council agree to keep the place one big graffitied dump
What a wonderful collection of memories, A superb record of a fine city and it's people. I and my family, moved to Bristol in 1956., and remained there ,till 1982. But not moving far beyond a 20 minute bus ride away. For once, I also enjoyed the very suitable music accompanying it. I've slowed down the speed to 75% of normal, it gives a longer view of the scenes, and the voice is still ok. Of course, you can 'click ', to halt the scene anyway, or both.
I agree With you. I believe there are certain features we should expect at certain price points. Accurascale and Dapol offer excellent value. Reasonably easy servicing and a quality mechanism are important to me. I will sometimes pay a premium for something that is hard to find. I have just done this and can't wait for it to arrive. I worked in the shot tower and mills from 1988 to 1993. I have footage of the workings of the 2 lead mills and footage from the shot dropping in cheese Lane. I will be posting them on RUclips soon, though the BBC are interested in them aswell.
Fabulous film, with some interesting shots of Our Bristol Old Vic, a place rarely even mentioned in standard books and films about Bristol, as if only the theatre's managers and Directors, staff and performers are allowed to make new films about it... Mark

We hear at the beginning of the film how a particular firm were given £300 in the mid-1950's to document 'on camera' the changing Bristol landscapes before, during and after, construction. This is a decade after the end of WW2 and as archives of this period show, colour film came into it's own during the war. The bombing of Pearl Harbour is just one example and captured in colour. So why use a technology that became 'old hat' over a decade earlier, to document and produce films which promote The New Britain? It makes no sense to find camera technology moving up and down a linear timeline - do we ever bring the horse and carriage out of retirement in protest to rising fuel prices? Not many of you reading this would consider buying a black and white TV, over colour. You just wouldn't and that's why this is just as unlikely.
We are now told that there is, and never was, any English culture so we should be glad that Islamic culture has arrived as there was nothing here before. We are expected to swallow these lies without any objection.
