  • Three old farts meet one new camera in this first attempt at recording something that isn’t a complete write-off even though the visual stabilisation, selfie angle and field of vision are all inferior to the old camera which decided at random whether it would bother to record the audio… or not.
    So, here we are with a Wylex on the wall, a Lewden under the arm, a Sony ZV-1 in our hands, and an Axiom sub-board that some idiot seemingly didn’t know how to knock holes into. Brace yourselves for half an hour of… people… doing their dull day job.
    BAM!
    Yes, Linda and Dan join me and my hangover doing the job I hate - retrofitting a consumer unit. With SBS now defunct, Lewden are our new go-to for consumer units, so let’s take a closer look at their wares along with some Doncaster Earthsure Dan’s got hold of.
    The builders who walloped in that Axiom board had offered to upgrade DB1 even though they had admitted to the homeowner that they weren’t electricians. How kind of them to offer such a value-added service! Fortunately, the homeowner wasn’t an idiot and didn’t want to leave his electrical safety in the hands of unqualified morons - which is why he called in we qualified morons. The other end of that armoured cable went to another Axiom board and that too was gash.
    This is the first video to be filmed with the Sony which lacks stabilisation meaning it’s all been done in edit and looks a little wobbly in places. There’s also some annoying audio between 16:33 and 17:48 where the mic worked loose and was tapping on the camera. Pah! I’ll get used to it eventually… or I’ll throw it out of the window!

      I reached out to all manufacturers recently to try and secure AFDD samples. A few played ball, one told me to bugger off, another said they'd be game then pulled out when they realised my content wasn't sanitised, the rest ignored me completely. With Lewden, the UK CEO rang me in person and invited me to their plant for a day to tour it and talk to their technical chap. They gave me something more important than money; they gave me their time. That's why I'm now buying their products.

      For R1+R2, R2, and Zs, the test result is N/A. It's still worth doing an IR test L-N to the main earth bar as a leakage fault could occur between live parts and earth even if that earth isn't via a dedicated CPC in which case the result is (hopefully) in the MegaOhm range.

    Great video as always David . Good to see Dan with you even though he did get the ethos MFT . 😂
    What was the EICR problems that warranted the board change ? That fuse box looked almost new , no earth on the lighting and wooden back boxes doesn’t warrant a board change in my opinion. If the customer asked for it fine. Otherwise I didn’t see anything wrong with it . Also the extra 45amp fuse to the right off the main switch I believe was to protect the main switch? I remember seeing a similar fuse box back in the mid nineties in a my mums friends house I asked her husband who was a spark and that’s what he told me. But I’m not entirely sure if he was correct or not?

      I liked the Irish cable for its CPC sleeving, however I didn't like the CPC being the same CSA as line/neutral as is standard in Europe. While not a problem on 1mm - 2.5mm cable, I can see it being quite cumbersome on 6mm or 10mm circuits, especially when Irish wiring accessories are based more on the UK style than the European gear. Most switches and sockets are designed for the smaller CPC which limits, or makes it awkward, for our Irish counterparts as I understand it.

    As for Doncaster cable, yeah they were owned by cef, but when the dad died who owned cef, the usual infighting starts where there's money involved, some had the cef brand plus other parts of the business and others started yess and also took Doncaster cables plus some overseas companies. Usual family shit.
    Also I know domestic lights need RCD protection, however is there any point in this case with no earth in the circuit.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  Месяц назад

      It's amazing how execution of a will can divide a family. Once any in-fighting starts, the only people who end up winning are the solicitors. As for RCD protection on the lighting, the lack of a CPC makes it especially important to have. An RCD has no connection to earth and doesn't rely on a CPC to be present or even the main earthing to be working. Let's say someone in the future wants to change a light fitting here and they fail to isolate the circuit. They grab the line wire and current flows from source, through them, down their step ladder and into physical earth. In this case, presence of a CPC or supplier's earth isn't relevant even if present, but the RCD will detect the current down line isn't returning via neutral and will duly click off. Not all 'earth leakages' happen down a CPC.
