The Pinkertons tossed a bomb through a window of the home of Jesse James's mother and stepfather. It maimed Jesse's mother and killed his little half brother.
The story: A lone Pinkerton detective had come to Clay County (Jesse James's home base) looking for Jesse. He was identified as a Pinkerton man as soon as he stepped off the train because he was wearing "city" clothes and he then met with local law enforcement. He changed into farmer's clothes and went on foot toward the farm of Jesse's mother and stepfather. Jesse and two of his gang intercepted the Pinkerton man, questioned him, concluded that he was a Pinkerton man, and killed him. They put his body over a horse and dumped it in neighboring Jackson County, home base of the Younger family. That was why the two additional Pinkerton men came looking for the Youngers. But the Youngers had many cousins in Jackson County. Again, outsiders were identified as lawmen. They foolishly went knocking on doors, and one of the doors was that of a cousin of the Youngers. Jim and John Younger happened to be upstairs, so they listened to the conversation between their cousin and the outsiders. When the two Pinkerton men departed, Jim and John let them get a little lead and then started after them. They came up behind them, drew guns, and questioned them. When the two Pinkerton men realized that Jim Younger wasn't buying their story about being cattle buyers, one of them drew a concealed pistol and shot John Younger, who was Jim's brother, not cousin. And the rest occurred pretty much as shown here, except that the man shot by Jim Younger actually lived for almost two weeks before dying of his wounds. This has been one of my favorite movies since I was 13. It has also been my opinion, and I am sure many will disagree, that John shouldn't have pointed that rifle at the Pinkertons. John was asking for it.
John was ignorant and stupidly inexperienced ....he thought that simply cause his last name was Younger, gave a pass to pilage, loot, bully people, and cold blooded, And murdering out law.!!!
@@gregvanzant8275 There was another encounter between the gang and an outsider (probably a Pinkerton man), though not portrayed in this film, and I think it was Jesse himself and another member of the gang who confronted him out on a lonesome road (as in this clip) and inquired what his business was. And when he said that he was a farmer looking for a farm in that area, Jesse said, "Let's see your hands." And when the stranger showed his hands, which were smooth and had no calluses or signs of hard work, Jesse took him to be an outside law officer and killed him. In the early stages of the gang's activity, the locals kept their eyes open for strangers and somehow quickly got word to the gang. That changed later on, but at first an outsider could not safely go nosing around Clay County, Jesse's home county.
@@fraser_mr2009 It was murder as presented but when you live as an outlaw you prey on others So sooner or later payback comes a calling and it ain't always fair and just.
In real life, the James-Younger Gang was fairly well defended by the locals in Clay County (Jesse James's home county). That eventually changed, but early on strangers were usually spotted as soon as they got off the train and the gang learned about it within a few hours.
It didn't happen exactly like this but fairly similar. There were three "visitors", two Pinkerton men accompanied by a local. One of the two Pinkerton men managed to escape unharmed. The other "P" man and the local were killed. And John Younger was Jim's brother, not cousin. They didn't meet incidentally on the road. The "P" men foolishly went knocking on doors, and Jim and John Younger were in one of those houses, the home, coincidentally, of a cousin of theirs. So as not to make trouble for their relation, they stayed upstairs til the visitors rode away, then took after them.
Every scene in this masterpiece is better than another.
Amen to that.
I just went to Kevin Brophy's memorial last weekend (John Younger) Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be missed.

There's so many I can't begin to list them all, but it is among the top of my list. I was born in 1951 so I've seen a lot of westerns.

Geez....hell no this isn't the best Western ever.
Long Riders and Unforgiven near the top of the list.

„You broke the law“. Don’t make me laugh. The law are the worst criminals of all.
The script should have had Jim Younger reply, "I'm about to break it again!"
By the way, the law protects you, the y watch out of us!!
@@daviddavis3389 🤣😂🤣
this aint texas! thats right
You don’t ride with us
funny enough Keith Carradine looks more like Bob Younger and Robert Carradine looks more like Jim.
👍!
Where can i write to stacy ❤❤
"You broke the law!"
So you kill an innocent kid?
Well, Pinkerton men ain’t no damn good, by my family’s experience back when.
Bought and paid-for goons for Big Steel. They didn't come out so well at Homestead.
Always wondered if this exact situation happened in real life. If so that was a murder. If not sure makes for a good flick lol
It did indeed happen. But it wasn’t a cousin. It was another Younger brother. John Younger.
@@fredricklawson1524 Dunno if John rode with em or not but if it was a draw and fire as shown that was a murder so Mr Pink got his come uppins
