In this episode, we are in Italy exploring what is known as "The Green Hospital" in the exploration community. We soon find out it is not really a hospital and not that green either. Instead, it is a brutalist holiday resort built in the mountains that happens to have an infirmary.

Hey that's me! 😆
Yupp
119th am afraid
yup
Me too!!
Fun color theory fact! Hospitals use that blue/green color because eyes can become desensitized to color over long periods of time. So when doctors and nurses are spending long periods of time looking at red blood, looking at blue or green can refresh their vision of red things, including the innards of a patient during surgery. It also reduces the effects of seeing the "negatives" of the color when you stare at a white surface.
I read "Fun colour theory fact! Hospitals" and expected it to be one of those red is actually a good colour for a children's hospital jokes
@Oreo Cookie Thats exactly what I'm refering to! someone responded to the post saying red had more positive connotations in colour theory completely ignoring the fact it looks like a trail of blood in a hospital and it kinda became a meme for a while
Very interesting!
The Architecture of the place is quite nice , the lots of natural light and the use of wood is quite good. it would have been a very modern looking place in the 70's
hehe... "lots of natural light" yeah... couple years exposed to the elements will do that....
I know beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and it is not the worst building I've ever seen but - to be honest - I think the decay is what adds really good to that very basic brutalist architecture and makes the holiday resort pretty.
I really like this kind of architecture. I've also been playing the game Control. I liked this type of architecture before Control, but the game only made me like it more.
The one guy measuring his height, accidentally dropped the measuring tool and that non emotional ‘ouch’ that followed was hilarious 😂
I've been there last year! It was a colony for children of postal administrators, here we call it ecomostro . It was part of a settlement project built to house families in the summer. Unfortunately, the institution that managed it disappeared and passed under the INPS, which decided to close it in 1997
Ecomostro è davvero il termine giusto! 😅
I was so enthralled by the height bar wobbling down the post, when you said "It's a feature!" I lost it.
Brian's child-like wonder on finding something annoyingly fun did it for me
This was my favorite line in the entire video because of the way he said it and was the entire reason I went to the comment section to see if anyone mentioned it
The phone does not exactly take credit cards, there used to be cards made specifically for those phones, which had a fixed amount of money on it. That's what we used when mobiles werent available yet, i do remember using it when i was a kid, I think they've fully dismatled those phones by now.
Also, in italy schools end at beginning of june and start in september so usually children are sent to places like that till around august, when parents are on holiday too...
Great video as always!!
Yeah, that's what i thought.
Not credit cards, as such, just prepaid magnetic strip cards.
Same. It took a phone card that you could purchase.
Ah phone cards, remember those from my younger days, for me they where Green BT (British Telecom) cards, money on those things tended to run out quick.
@@combie92500 In my country, they also introduced these.
You put the card in, it read the amount on it, locked the card in the slot, and when you finished your call, it would write the new amount and release the card.
Some clever people found that if you cut the card so that it only had the magnetic strip and then a section in the middle, you could insert it, wait until it locked and read the value, and then pulle the card partways out.
When the call ended it did it's write thing, but since the magnetic strip was not there, it did not write the amount.
This gave you infinite calls...Only thing was that you might need to hang up and redial, if the full amount was used up.
The telco, soon got wind of this, and just changed the procedure to "Read amount, write $0 as the amount on the card"
When the call ended, the $0 would be overwritten with the actual amount.
Anyone trying the trick after that, found that their $100 card, was empty even though they just made a $1 call :)
You've just reminded me of phone cards! How did I completely forget about those? lol
My two favourite Urbex teams, together again: Broken Window Theory and The Proper People. QUALITY! 💛💛
BSF?
All we need is Jake from Bright Sun Films and we got the best collab ever
Yes!
Hey there, this is really old footage from 2018. So, it's an old collab. 🤠
@@bwturbex Old or new, it's All Good! Danke schön :D
For those who are interested:
@3.14 it says: Assistant and "canteen times"... Interesting to see that they had two shifts
@3,40 the menu didn't seem to have anything specific in it just that there is first and second dishes and then sides and fruit, but nothing specific...
@5.37 says "Ipost vacation centre"...
@12.53 It is a sign indicating where, administration, Bursary (ie the dept that provides equipments apparently), reception and infarmary
@13.27 The cost of sending someone there was in Lira... Now depending where these are from (I'm guessing 90's that is equivalent to a months salary... Some look to pay less though...
@14.11 as someone else said the "credit card" part was for a prepaid cars which were for public phones only... Not sure how people paid for public phones after the public phones were changed...
@
That was super Interesting I guess every country has a different idea about "Summer Camp.
@OldStar THey were sent there when it still looked new .
Uncertain future? I'd be enormously surprised if this were to be repurposed at all. Being a remote location it just might not be demolished and left to rot indefinitely if the particular plot of land isn't of interest to any developer.
13:00 At that time, the Italian Lira was roughly 2000 to the dollar, so the housing was "relatively" cheap.
14:00 The pay phone doesn't take credit cards, it takes prepaid phone cards that were common throughout most of Europe in the 80s and 90s to cut down on the vandalism that coin-operated phone booths attracted.
Glad to hear some love to the crew at broken window theory
Maybe I just have weird taste but although I generally hate '70s style I think this building looks incredibly modern. Really looks like it could have been built in the last 5 years.
I also think the notion of summer camp is very American. In the UK we had things like Butlins which was basically a summer camp for families, like this one. It's not in the woods and in cabins. just chalets, with swimming pools, arcades and stage shows etc. I think that's more what they did here, not like cooking smores on camp fires lol
It's kind of a strange, barebones building. It reminds me of a sports resort in the Swiss town of Fiesch, where I went as a kid nearly 40 years ago. Apparently it still exists. Very simple looking buildings, plain concrete. But very spacious, and of course beautiful scenery. I have great memories of that time.
The Italian Lira currency was pretty crazy back in the days before the Euro was introduced. It was about 1700 ITL to 1 USD.
Man I hope you guys never stop uploading. I love watching your vids and as a bonus they help me relax.
I feel like the whole "cabin ins the woods" scenario is a very american idee of summercamp. I have been a camp councelor for 8+ years here in Germany and all of them have been in youth hostels. no camping, no cabins. sometimes rurally, sometimes actually in the forest. but not always. Anyone else from a different country with summer camp styles/ locations to share?
we have these medium youth centers owned by the church, always near a big lake, accessable through short drive off the highway into the forest. There is a sauna and a pier. There is a medium cafeteria and a few medium rooms for activities, often a gravel field for games. Not the best or most memorable locations, just existing to recruit youth into a religion. They are sometimes used for grouping activity days by schools, which are somewhat enjoyable.
These summer camps are NOTHING compared to camping trips boy scouts do, those are once in a lifetime experiences in the most beautiful and magical places.
The whole episode was unusually "ignorant American". I am used to much better research from our dudes. No idea what went wrong here. As a German myself, my youth vacations have been all over the place. Tent camps at the coast, youth hostels in larger cities, boat trips across the IJsselmeer, all over the places with any type of accommodation. It was a really great time!
Where I come from...... my parents fortunately didn't send us to indoctrination camps.....
As an American who sent to summer camp, I kind of had that- out in the country side, huge property with forest and nature trail. But alot of the activities from the pool, climbing tower, arts and crafts, etc and the residental halls were in the front in a large mowed meadow with the parklot and reception. And the Halls had two wings of 30 beds apiece. Most days had as walking into the woods for canoeing on the lake back there, among other outdoor things. But it wasn't exclusvely in the forest, especially if rain or super high heat was in the forecast.
Also, if you go to any park, campground or no, there are two ways we lay them out here
1. There road and plots up to the waterfront because people love fishing, boating and swimming in the water
2. You park in a lot (relativaly) close to the main road out, with the rangers hut, nature center and WC close to the water & power main as possible. Not alot of cabins surrounded by woods, at least not for cheap.
PS- At my old summer camp there was camping area with permentaly sheltered bunk beds mini-cabins around a fire, where we (mostly) made our S'mores but that was a offered as a one night thing available for the kids who wanted too. Only a porta potty out there though so no I didn't opt for it.
The ramps were way too steep and long for wheel chair use, imagine loosing your grip on the wheel chair at the top of the ramp 😱😲
Boy you guys really get around.
Love the content.
Thank you for all your time and effort to produce top shelf uploads.
Those little square windows at 10:45 look so cool.
The ramps are much better and safer for mass foot traffic
Man this needed to be LONGER! We need to see MORE !!!
I guess when your a kid, you don't really notice that you summer camp looks like a futuristic concentration camp. I bet it was a great place to make new friends. And mom and dad got some "quality time" without kids. Anyways, thanks for yet another upload. Keep em' coming. Also, I noticed a bottle of wine, with the content and cork intact. As a wine aficionado, I would have a hard time not looking into that, might still be good if not directly exposed to sunlight.
maybe the real concentration camp prisoners were the friends we made along the way
Probably just table wine, which is not meant to be aged. The bottle with the wicker/straw woven around it is likely a cheap chianti. Also since it's upright the cork has likely dried out and allowed air in oxidizing the wine into vinegar. Might be nice drizzled into olive oil with some good focaccia to dip into it!
my school looks way worse than that, it's all bare concrete
A giveaway that this wasn't a hospital is the fact the "patient rooms" don't have any medical gas outlets, nurse call buttons, etc. Every patient room, even rooms for the 70's will have a headwall with outlets, medical gas outlets, etc. It was clear when you guys found a guest room that this was something other than a hospital.
The whole of Italy takes their national holiday in August, so the parents send the children to have a holiday in the hotel like a Summer camp
va fangul
Modern for the 70s! That still looks pretty modern! Even the desks look like the minimalist style that's in now a days! So cool
14:18 this kind of phone, named "Rotor" was common from the late 80s until 2000-2002. It was able to accept both coins and cards who were very popular and frequently illustrated for marketing or institutional purpose. As i grew up in the 90s, i remember the smell of cigarettes and the large amount of syringes left in phone cabins when the heroin epidemic was at its peak. Strange times.
yeah in europe summer camps are more like dorms. Some buildings are designed almost like motels, some others more like hostels (more people cramedinto one rrom amd all facilities are communal)
The cabin/tent type camps are usually more for scouts or if you go to a camp that is specifically for camping.
I am guessing this resorts housed several different groups of kis who would circulate in the building in rows of 2. Ramps are more efficient than stairs for this (but take more space)
Awesome video guys! Thanks for bringing us along! BTW…..that intro is almost iconic! 👍🏻😎
Man you guys easily make the best urbex vids. Never stop!
At some point they probably will. But hopefully not for a few more years at least!!!
@@EphemeralProductions I completely agree. You can see their weariness.
@@hi.panorama I don't see any weariness. Lol. I'm just speaking out of logic that someday they'll have to stop. But I pray it's many years from now.
Hey you guys are absolutely amazing and the best, number one explorers on here! You deserve the followers on here. I've followed you guys from day one and have watched your channel explode!! You guys are great, thanks so much for all the amazing places you guys have shared with us these last few years. It's ALWAYS makes my weekend when you drop a new video!thanks so much ❤️❤️
Always enjoy your videos. Great background information on the places you explore. Thank you so much.
@theproperpeople I absolutely love yalls videos and I friggin love yall!! Yall are one of the best urban explorers ever on RUclips!! This is Dan Bell is right behind yall! Keep up the great work guys!!!!!!!
Thinking the ramps were just so large amounts of kids could move from floor to floor? More so than an elevator or stairway???
Safer in general if you have the space to build them. I doubt anyone has tripped and died falling down a ramp. I'd take ramps over stairs any day.
Oh how. I love a good spiral staircase.
Great video ! Keep it up sad places like this sit abandoned when they could be used. But that’s just more to explore ! Be safe out there
I love it when you start the music and the artistic shots that's what I call them you dudes make it look easy and we all know it
I really like the last scene in the corridor. Looks like a shadow fleeing the quit solitude of the place and leaving the child screams as a vague souvenir of the past. The music is very appropriate for this moment.
omg A Proper People Video!!
Still get “the fizz” every time time I hear the theme song. Thank you guys for such great content! Best channel on RUclips!
The childrens section has a layout similar to a prison. Each "cell block" segregated, with stacked "cells" around a common.
the production quality is insane on ur videos! like always 100/10
I love these videos so much. This is the best abandoned place exploration channel.
Great video as always!
If you are still in Italy by any chance there is a large abandoned psychiatric hospital in Volterra called "the place of no return". Also there is an abandoned Bugatti factory. Seen both whilst in Italy and just thought they would be great for your channel if you get the chance!
Hallo the Proper People, Brian and friend, how are you doing? I see that you travel from America to Italy to visit this huge abandoned Holiday resort and Green hospital in the mountains of north Italy. Was very interested to see what is left behind in this huge stucture left abandoned in the Mountains. Good video work done. Watching this video from Paramaribo Suriname
I loved your Cathedral video. I love the secret lookout windows looking down on the congregation from the little rooms. My other favorite type of videos are your European videos. It gives a nice different perspective from a European human standpoint which is very different in some ways and similar in others. Also, the building are many times older than American buildings
Love the vids guys! Will we be getting anymore bumps in the night videos soon those are always so great!
Hi from Toronto Canada. This has got to be the weirdest camp ever. Best kind of decay is natural. Weird place. Views out the windows are really nice. Beautiful scenery. Wonder if there was a gym , pool. Why and when it closed. Thanks for taking us with you.
if you're from Toronto you may have been to Bonye River as part of the TDSB which had buildings of similar construction.
Found your channel in 2017. Remember watching in my dorm. Happy you guys are still around
The perfect collab with all of my favorite explorers. Excellent video as usual guys!
Watching your Explores for second time have subscribed amazing footage, excellent details you seem to have great knowledge helping us relate, along with beautiful photos capturing the beauty of the buildings in there ruff abandoned state reminds me of BWTheory who are excellent , Fantastic job guys Carry On with the great work😊
That hallway with all the little windows looks awesome!
Man. I wish i could find spots like this for my channel. Awesome explore guys!
Got new upload on my b-day,yay
Nice video as always!
I am from italy and the money write in the sheets was in lire so i can convert in € for you it start from around 200 to 400€ to 600 to 800€ for each children, pretty expansive considered that the structure is from back in the seventy
Edit 1: the orange phone [one of the first] is working with the old phone card (sort of a recharghable credit card used only for the phone, nowdays heavely unused)
Nice video guys. Wow, that Frenchman was something else!
Proper People and BWT are my favorite urbexers ! You guys should do more explorations together!
I can definitely see why this would be considered a hospital. Such a cold vibe for a summer camp. Maybe that's why it became abandoned. Creepy.
Cool😎 Wow! I wasn't expecting it to be a summer camp!
Another great presentation as always!! ✌🏻
Epic video as usual guys!
Been watching since 2016. Nice to see your videos again after a while . :)
Really enjoyed your awesome abandoned video!
Very cool video i love watching these abandoned exploring vids
each and every time so very fascinating.
What a stunning location!! Some prime real estate right there👍
40 minute of drive from my home (Florence). I also visited it. Gongratulations, guys: keep it up! I love your video!
Great Explore !!
It could also be 'hospital' in the hospitality sense of the word. In medieval times, the word hospital meant a place of hospitality, often on the routes of travellers attending religious pilgrimages. Great video, guys!
This place is huge but love your videos guys aka Bryan and Michael. Btw keep up the good work. We love you guys .
Awesome tour guys!
Hey guy's been tuning in to you guys, since I think the abandon subway system in Cincinnati Some odd years back and i think your first episode Though was 6 flags theme park. Anyways Great work on helping uncover history The Proper Way Also its been cool seeing the channel Grow. Peace out from Seattle.
Great video. Thanks 🖤
First of all thanx guys! Very nice photography! All in all I deem it quite a nice piece of 70s architecture. Only the size of it seems massive, especially when you think of the huge numbers of kids there in the summer... not very intimate!!
However I ask myself, why it was abandoned, probably all of the sudden...
Also it's too bad for the kitchen and other expensive stuff that coud have been used by other people in need...
Couldn’t get anymore in the middle of nowhere. Great video 😀
Love your vids, guys!
Man would I love to own an abandoned building. Especially one like that.
Another great video.... I swear I drove by you guys scoping out a church and stuff in Detroit when I was there....
These always make my week.😁
The Proper People are my spirit animal. They explore the places I never could, but I feel their experiences as close as I had been there. I've seen enough irl building deterioration to have an idea of what they're going through, and I'm both jealous and scared. Please stay safe through your adventures!
Awesome video thanks 👍
Another great explore. The spiral staircase reminds me of a lighthouse. Love your videos. Stay safe in your travels. Thank you.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I'd love to take some artistic photos of this place one day!!!!
Awesome place, the lack of extensive vandalism like we have in the states is always awesome to see.... Love it when 2 great groups get together! BWT is another of my favorites!
Absolutely. There is so many beautiful abandoned places that get covered in graffiti. Like sometimes I think graffiti can be pretty but should only be put on certain places and not places like this
I take it neither of you have ever been to Italy, I am Italian and our cities have tons more graffiti than any American one....this place might just be too out of reach
@@inmydarkesthour2278 I would love to go to Italy one day
Thanks for this abandoned green place👍👍👍
they should name their channel "the proper christmas decorations" :D
great explore, amazing view with all those hills and nature
Italy used the Lira until 2002, when it was abandoned as legal tender in favor of the Euro.
RIP cassette deck, you will be missed. 7:08 📼 😭 Anyway, great video as always. Thank you! Cheers! 🍻 🏥 👍 💖

Well that was a unique place never seen something like that before.
Insanely amazing

Awesome video as always!! 👌

the room with the mosquito on the door, likely was the malaria quarantine room.
In Italia dal dopo guerra fino agli anni 90 andavano molto le colonie per bambini e ragazzi. Se vai anche sull'adriatico ne troverai molte abbandonate.
Love brutalist architecture ^.^
yay bryan got a haircut
It's just old footage lol
Seriously scary music. So cool !
The wood is Magnificent it still looks good
5:38 - "Centro Vacanze" means "Holiday Resort" in Italian.
