I met Pan in 1970 after flying in from Quesnel; he had just sold the ranch to Mr. Anthony and was guiding; he invited me to stay at his cabin for a few days and entertained me freely. I remember watching him crack walnuts with a thumb and finger, he had fingers like bananas! He never asked why I was there or what I wanted as per the unique code of the country. He was truly one of a kind and I was honored to have met him after reading Rich Hobsons wonderful books about their life together and pioneering ranches.
I was up at the Home Ranch in 83 and met Pan just before he passed away. He had me cook breakfast the last day were were there and when he died the outfitter called said it was my breakfast that killed him... I really enjoyed talking to Pan and hearing about his life. I just wish I had read Rich Hobsons books before I went so I would of had more back ground. Very remote country, but beautiful.
Just finished reading all three of Hobsons books, I find it amazing that Phillips outlived Hobson by about 30 years even after having had a serious accident, that left him immobile for over a year. What an amazing story and life these guys and their family had.
Born and Raised in British Columbia love the History of B.C. city kid but have traveled extensively throughout B.C. Cariboo my favorite ( cabin at Ruth Lake ) these old films of early B.C . are great 12:26 video cast iron open fire best food ever

I remember watching the Cattle Drive from Bouchie Lake Elementary, the teachers used to let us all go outside to watch.
it is hard to imagine how tough these people were, like the early homesteaders in this country

nice to see this old video! a way of life few get to see!
I've read all of Rich Hobson's books , also Diana Phillips books. It's a hard life , but what a great life & assume country.
Thanks Diana for the rest of the story.
i hope someone uploads another video of this with sound
Sound is working for me.
What a find! Thanks:)
I didn't laugh at Pan's joke about the definition of a cowboy. What really made me laugh was how funny he thought it was.
Does anyone know if Diana Phillips is still alive? Or even Cathy Hobson, Rich and Glorias daughter?
You know that Ken Philips, Pan's son passed last year; we used to truck log together in Bella Coola..
like pan always said "well, there ain't nothing to it"
Pan
Pan Philips was a Green Horn compared to my Grandpa.
Whether it be back home in the Blackwater or in the bright lights of Vancouver, I always have and probably always will :)
