I love the way they've developed Ralph. I wish they wrote like this more often--building on small background characters close to the central mysteries of the story. A book about the other guys who die in Sister Location would be cool, they could resolve a lot of ambiguity in that story.

Ralph is my favorite character, I love his cheesy jokes and quirks, he really feels like a fleshed-out person now. I know it'll never happen, but I wish we'd get a Michael Afton book like that one day, I love how we know he watches weird cartoons, chews too much gum, and has a dark sense of humor.

I just remembered that in the Tales series they give the game developer an animatronic family he swears he needs to work to support which is why he accepts the job, could they have done something similar with ralph which is why he keeps holding on to the job?

Thank you for covering Coppélia and The Sandman! I know I've been hinting so much at the latter. I forgot to mention the opera The Tales of Hoffmann when I kept pushing The Sandman but The Sandman really makes SO MUCH symbolic sense to FNAF. I'm glad that it resonated with you as much as it did with me!

This is one of the best analyses of Coppelia's name with how it just doesn't just straight to that she's a robot and moving to a lot of deep parallels. It wasn't till this video either that I figured out what was up with the tales of Hoffmann opera by Offenbach and the Coppellia Ballet which were written within 11 years of each other. In Offenbach's opera there is an act based off the same story of Hoffmann and I only really know of it for the famous Doll's song aria. It's an incredible soprano piece that reaches some of the highest notes a soprano can get to in opera. I know Hoffmann was fairly popular all through the 19th century world of music, with people like Schumann writing his famous Kreisleriana after one of his tales too. Very interesting to see the two are connected, even if there isn't really any significance as I never really knew the story of the Offenbach opera other than there was an automaton doll and that the music was famous. Nothing really relevant with the other opera but still neat.

100% agree with your thinking from the last little stinger there. I think a lot of people like to disregard that little bit from Help Wanted, but it seems foundationally important to the Steel wool games.
Within the continuity of the non-scott games I think the original Fnaf games exist in the form we play them in and are a well known franchise, and that only things that are confirmed to be true in in steel wool games specifically (and possibly Tales books?) should be considered canon to that continuity.
For example, you can conclude that Burntrap is real, but it may not be accurate to assume the corpse belongs to a man named William Afton. It's confusing, but I don't think they were ambiguous about that detail. It's one of the least ambiguous exposition sequences in the whole series.

Small correction for 8:00 , I forget what page, but Ralph did bring his daughter to work once when she was very young, but she cried so hard when the animatronics showed up that she threw up, and he swore to never take her back. Worth noting she's 11, so this was likely at the first Freddy's location circa. 1983.

Do you think the Sandman story could also be a William parallel? Literally just writing this as free thought so I'm probably forgetting a lot, but perhaps William's father was also obsessed with robotics/tech/puppets or the search for immortality. After all, the concept of using dolls to house spirits is ancient. Someone reminiscent of Henry was involved in his death, and William continues his father's work.
Maybe he originally had good intentions. Like maybe he was a neglected kid who wanted to be better so he had his own kids and wants to make cool things/places for other neglected kids. Kids are constantly being left at the pizzeria in stories because parents have to work or are kind of neglectful. Perhaps Moon is even one of his original characters inspired by his childhood, starting as a comforting creature who gets warped over time into a child tormentor. I like to think Henry might have been the robot guy, but maybe Afton was a fabric/puppet guy, making things like Sun/Moon, his hand-stitched costume, etc.
But when he meets Henry he's both triggered and fascinated. He becomes obsessive and links Henry to his father's death. His wife Clara tries to make him chill but can't stop his descent. Henry premieres his robots and Afton falls in love with the idea of them. He both works with and despises Henry. He knows Henry is hiding secrets. Perhaps after his son dies he thinks Henry is hiding links between robots and human life.
He sees Henry making Baby and wants her/thinks maybe Henry has already solved how to make realistic bots/bring back the dead in them but isn't sharing it. Perhaps he even does the killings to either make his own attempt at human robots or he's doing what he thinks is a continuation of his father's work.
He gets more and more paranoid about people around him actually being human bots after he sees the possessed ones acting like humans. If he could get so close, Henry must already be way ahead of him. Maybe he thinks his own kids were replaced with bots (the baby isn't mine). He gets so paranoid he even accuses his wife of secretly being a robot (maybe built by Henry to spy on him or something) and tries to kill her but she escapes and runs away. He becomes a parallel to his own father: obsessed, negligent of his own kids, and eventually dies due to his own madness, leaving Michael to try to break the cycle but also leaving Elizabeth as the one more like her dad, vowing to continue his work.

NGL, the evidence towards a Charlie bot being created after FNaF 6 is fascinating. While I wasn't a fan of the whole Charlie android stuff I think the insight Charlie could provide in modern FNaF with actual characterization and the timeline placement would be enough for me to happily welcome the concept. It feels a lot more natural than having an android in the 1980s and Charlie would be really interesting to see as an active protagonist with all her experience and wealth of knowledge regarding Freddy's.

I basically maxed out the whole book and there’s still some stuff that doesn’t make sense to me: spoiler warning btw:
The book basically makes you go through this whole complicated route in night 5 to find a message on the phone in the office by this girl that Ralph rejected years ago. She tells him the truth about everything going on in the pizzeria, and it’s your job to stop the animatronics. This leads you onto night 6, which features Ralph finding her dead body, and thus her mobile phone (which is the bonus item at the start of the book) this ends up stringing together the chain of events that lead to us being hired in fnaf 1. What doesn’t make sense though is the ending of night 6. It’s a bunch of keyboard scrambling before mentioning to replay the whole book with the bonus item. This means that when Ralph gets the mobile phone, he knows about what’s happening in Freddy fazbear’s pizza, but doesn’t leave or do much to stop it, so he willingly dies on the 5th night, which is crazy.
THIS COULD MEAN A WHOLE BUNCH OF CHARACTERS IN FNAF ARE GOING THROUGH TIME PARADOXES

ThE MICHAEL REVEAL. THE MIMIC JOKE. IMMEDIATELY SPOTTING THE TWISTED ONES. We really are the same person /j
OK but this is a really good deep-dive. Honestly, my thoughts first went to "Afton trying to put souls into robots" (via the Coppelia ballet) that I forgot the og short and the Charliebot thing. I'm the worst Charlie stan ever /j.
I do wanna say that I believe one route does say Coppelia went to Freddy's at one point. Ralph mentions he brought her when she was seven, and she was so scared of the animatronics that she threw up, so he never brought her back. However, she also refers to her dad standing in her doorway as "looking like Fredbear", which would've been way before her time- FFD closed in '83, which seems to be about when Phone Guy started working, and one route says he started working when she was just born. So it seems that... SOMETHING interesting is going on with her. Whether it's just Ralph's time loop shenanigans or a reason that Afton/the animatronics want her... up to interpretation.

To me personally, Coppelia seems to parallel Abby from the FNAF Movie. And I feel like William Afton is basically using people as bait for the Freddy’s animatronics as career counselor, BUT also take their relatives and use them as experiments for remnant to rebuild his family and use them as a vessel for immortality.
With Coppelia’s name and origin, my mind just clicked to Ballora. And I’ll give my personal view of why they intended this; more so, I have the feeling that William uses Illusion discs for his Funtime animatronics to go anywhere and lure victims as bait for remnant research. But with Ballora (and Baby), Afton saw them like his wife and daughter- he wants to revive them to be perfect (just like how he sees the animatronics as his family). With this, Afton is curious and thought about not just using Ralph as bait, but also take his daughter away and end her for giggles. (It’s not like Afton cares who’s important for his experiments)
The way my mind clicked was with Ballora being POSSESSED by Mrs. Afton herself. And my gut feeling is that Mrs. Afton herself might be (named) Clara, and is probably going around arguing why William isn’t arrested yet. And I have a feeling that Mrs. Afton committed suicide in the Scooping Room to end her trauma over William’s madness- (now this makes me wish for a Circus Baby’s Pizza World Interactive Novel starring Mrs. Afton) but Afton realized the women he fell in loved with is dead, he has driven himself to push hard enough to use people as bait to get more remnant to keep her forever.
And I also want to mention Eleanor- now now, this might sound crazy, but I have this thing going around my mind wondering why she looks like Baby, but also have a connection to Afton, remnant, agony, etc. I have a dumb feeling she’s Henry’s attempt to create the perfect human robot that is a mix of Ballora and Baby, as a way to keep both of their remnants alive and hidden from Afton himself. And the whole heart pendant could mean something to Afton but probably more tragic, I feel like the reason it’s a heart is because it’s more of William’s gift to Mrs. Afton, and now William ends up using multiple victims’ remnants and create a powerful heart pendant that’ll revive his wife to be more perfect and beautiful. (More of wanting her to be realistic like Charlie bots) About the whole agony thing, I think it’s either that Shadow Freddy possessed Eleanor as a way to continue Afton’s quest.
But then we come to the idea that Afton is incapable of love- and what if I told you that because we never see him interact with Mrs. Afton at all in the canon? I’m saying that he never loves because the only person who supported him was Mrs. Afton, and that Afton wants to be supported because he never felt loved in his life. All William wants is to keep Mrs. Afton alive not because he truly adores her, but more of that he doesn’t want to be back to being a cornered rat having to deal with his kids’ problems and have someone to help him be supportive. This’ll line up Ballora’s lyrics of an empty tomb (even though the song was written by the VA and not Scott).
I have a feeling that The Week Before is showing the audience a dark side of Sister Location (and probably give us a Circus Baby Interactive Novel) while showing more about FNAF 1 (and FNAF 2). My idea is that Coppelia’s name was used because it’s reflecting on Afton using victims’ remnant to keep his family under his control, but also make his wife more perfect and beautiful no matter how hard he tries. And with the Clara thing, it makes me think Mrs. Afton is named Clara and she and William is what inspired some random dude to create “The Immortal and The Restless” to poke fun at Fazbear for.
Idk, my mind just clicked to that when I looked up the origin of Coppelia’s name. But hey, that’s just a theory, A GAME THEORY!!!
