I once walked a terribly long stretch of Route 66 during the 70s after I got home from the war. During a random rainstorm, a tall, thin man picked me up and drove me the last leg to Seligman, Arizona. That man was Patrick Duffy himself.
My parents were married in an evening ceremony in Los Angeles in Dec. 1950. Their honeymoon was a trip to Las Vegas, but they didn't want to drive all the way there, through the desert. at night, so they stopped over at the Wigwam Motel for their first night together as man and wife. Incidentally, once at the Flamingo Hotel in Vegas, a car drove through the front of their room with them inside. In 1966, my parents, sister and I [plus our dog on only her second vacation in her life] spent one night at the motel on the way to Lake Arrowhead. This motel played a central role in some of my important family memories.
We've stayed there at least a half dozen times. And at least once in room 10! Always had a blast there. Used to hang out with a group of other road trip lovers there and we'd all sit around chatting and drinking. Good times.
I was born and raised in S.B. in the 50's through the 70's. My aunt and uncle lived in Rialto so we passed that motel a zillion times during our visits. I always wanted to stay there, but dad always said no. It's good to see it's been well maintained.
Good video I live by Rte 66 in St Louis. We took Rte 66 in 1967 to Downey Calif. My uncle and aunt lived in Downey then. We took my grandma to see them and took rte 66 to California then went to Downey.
Here in the UK, I can well remember the exciting weekly adventures of "Route 66" on the old black and white tele' set. With Messrs, Martin Milner and George Maharis. Ahhh, those were the "good ol' days!"

One of my family lines came during the Dust Bowl from Texas to California and settled into agriculture in Winters, CA and other areas such as San Bernardino.
I have stayed in the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook Arizona, and it is much more original than the unit that you were allowed to view here. In fact all of the furniture was identical to photos from the 1940s and 50s taken inside the units at that time. The one modern change was a window unit air conditioner, and even that was done very tastefully and did not detract from the experience at all. My stay was the fulfillment of a long time desire to stay there and I was not disappointed in any way. Very comfortable accommodations, spotlessly clean and super nostalgic. I would love to go back some time. Highly recommend it to anyway who has a love for yesteryear.
Awesome to see this pop up in my suggested, considering I just stayed there myself, in room... errrr tepee #12, last week from May 9th thru May 11th. I enjoyed my stay very much and was very impressed with the overall condition of the property. The rooms are clean, the beds and pillows very comfortable and the grounds secure. It's very nice to be able to park immediately outside your room which makes carrying any luggage, or small children, to your room, much easier. The refrigerator inside the room was large, clean, already cold and worked extremely well. The shower was a personal favorite as it had a seat, a high swan neck shower head, which delivered lots of high pressured hot water. My only gripe is there is no closet or any place to hang clothes etc. The property has nice landscaping and is well maintained. The Wigwam is a rare jewel on what is, for the time being, an unattractive stretch of Route 66. I look forward to staying there again if brought back to the area. Thank you for your take on this piece of Americas Mother Road, Route 66 history!
When I was younger (a few decades ago) we had a Teepee Motel in my home town in Nebraska on Highway 6 but it's gone now. I was always fascinated by it.
It was nice to see someone had taken an interest in this place. When my mom lived in Rialto off Tippecanoe I would see them and they were looking pretty sad condition. I think how back in the day what it was like to stay in one. Glad they cleaned them up. A bit of history that has been saved. Thanks for the tour. By the way my father in law and his siblings were saved in Seligman Arizona by a man from a ranch there. I think it was Kings ranch. Coming from Scipio, Ok. Dust bowl survivor and lived at the weedpatch camp.
I really enjoyed this video. I grew up in Rialto from 1980 to 1997. I always wondered what the story of the tee pees was and what they looked like inside. I can remember riding in the car with my mom and seeing the hotel and always wondering why and that it was old and cool looking. You guys do a great job and this video really hit home for me. Thank you.

Great Video Jeff and Sarah! I have driven Route 66 through Kansas and partially through Oklahoma. Also, I have driven the older Route 66 to Coffeyville, Kansas. When it was rerouted, they changed the numbering to Route 166.
I only remember Bobby Troup from Emergency, a TV show that I loved as a child. I had no idea that he was a singer/songwriter. Thanks for taking us here. I think it's a really cool retro place. Hope ya'll have a great week! God bless!
When I was 4 I drove on the original RT66 w/my parents from KS to CA. A long drive, but, have vivid memories! Very exciting looking out the windows and seeing all the sign and roadside attractions. I remember seeing Wigwams as a current theme. I didn't realize how famous it would become. My dad taught in KS, and we spent the summer in CA. The next yr. had a job in CO, but moved to CA after that, and, then we took the northern route. We lived for 2 yrs. in Tehachapi, my dad taught at the prison there, so we were not really far from the low desert, we lived in the high desert. I like it.
Having grown up in Pomona California in the 50s we pass that place many times on our way to Coachella before there was the interstate 10, never did stop there but I always thought it was very unusual. Thanks for the tour you guys always appreciate your videos.

Oh man, that was so COOL! I remember traveling the southern route along 66 when I was a kid. Mom and Dad would get a trip book from AAA to navigate from Modesto to Indiana where my mom grew up. I- 40 was still under construction, and I remember going through Bagdad and Amboy. Dad gave me the map to "help" navigate. Thinking back, it was just to keep me busy LOL. But, all that map reading paid off later in my flying career. Makes me wonder if you have more stops covered along route 66? Any hints?? We will be watching!

The teepee motel was a landmark on our way somewhere in my childhood. I was thinking maybe on the way up to our cabin in Big Bear, but I don’t think that makes sense geographically. Ah well. Very pleased to see it again.

But now I'm older and wiser , and watched lots of documentaries about it, it an amazing thing, especially with all these amazing nuggets along the way. It was great to see Sarah . My wife and I drove a motorhome all along route 66 back in the late 80's and even though we had a motorhome, we stayed 1 night at that exact same place.; It was a little different, older should I say. We did for nostalgia. Brings back memories, thanks for the memory.
I love nostalgia. When I was a child in the 60's, I would go to Cherokee, NC with them and we would stay in a tee pee motel up there. The entire rooms were not fully covered by the tee pee, just a front facade to walk through. But to us kids it was cool. You don't find great old nostalgic stuff these days. Or at least it's harder to find them. Great video as always.

This is one of the more memorable kitschy funky landmarks on that stretch of 10 / 66 (like the dinosaurs and date shake shop) between LA and Vegas. Thanks for sharing and doesn't their lawn looks fantastic?!
I'm too young to fully understand the fascination with everything 1950s, but as far as Route 66 I definitely get it. Just yesterday I was in Amboy CA, the sun had just set, and the neon signs were lit. I really understood the romance of a two lane road to adventure crossing the USA, with stops of every variety spaced a mile or so apart. Modern interstates are efficient mechanisms of travel, but there is little about them that is particularly interesting. If anyone doesn't get it, check out Amboy at sunset sometime. You will understand.

Neat video. Thank you. That 2 color tile motif was all the rage for kitchens and bathrooms at least as far back as 1924. All the tile in my 98 year old house is like that, one color for the large surface and a border made with another color of tile, usually darker than the surface area tile.
When I was a kid in the 1960's they had a Wigwam Motel in Horse Cave Kentucky as you mention and we always stopped there to eat at the Wigwam Restaurant during our once a year trip to Tennessee to see my grandparents. They had great food and it was really big as well. I don't know if they are still in business or not. But as a child I always thought of it as one of the highlights of the trip to eat there and always wanted to see what the inside of one of the rooms was like. Never had the chance though and haven't been back to that part of the country since.
Hi, lovely video. As someone who grew up down the street from there I feel as it's my duty to let you know there is a very good reason why the rooms were never updated. During the 90's to early 2000's they gained a very bad reputation of illegal substances, hourly prices for questionable clientele, and as the saying goes "don't touch anything without a blacklight." They're motto was "Do it in a teepee!" You two were very brave for staying there. I couldn't be paid enough to stay there ever.
We stayed there for a night last year. Believe it or not we had one of the best showers in our many nights in hotels at the wig wam. We’ve driven much of Route 66 as Far East as Holbrook. AZ where we drove around the Wig Wam there. Thanks for sharing.
Lived in Barstow in late 50's. Remember traveling on the Mother road. One such trip was on a bus with my father to Santa Monica when he picked up his new Renault 4cv. Trips to San Berdoo were common. Very nostalgic Jeff.

Same here from Kansas to Cali in a 69' Road Runner. Loved every single minute of it. I'm pretty sure endorphins just cut lose thinking about it.

These were once fairly common in the KOA camp grounds. There was one in the southern side of Council Bluffs, IA across the Missouri River from Omaha.

The tile in the bathroom is exactly like the tile work in the bathrooms at Golden Gate Hotel (built in 1906) Fremont St Vegas. Very old style.
Same as my pre WWII kitchen in Westwood CA also! Sarah's reaction to this hotel is pretty hilarious. It's a very different world now.

Good stuff! Road trips back in the 50s must've been quite different than today. Slower, fewer miles each day, less comfortable.

This is one of the more memorable kitschy funky landmarks on that stretch of 10 / 66 (like the dinosaurs and date shake shop) between LA and Vegas. Thanks for sharing and doesn't their lawn looks fantastic?!
I'm too young to fully understand the fascination with everything 1950s, but as far as Route 66 I definitely get it. Just yesterday I was in Amboy CA, the sun had just set, and the neon signs were lit. I really understood the romance of a two lane road to adventure crossing the USA, with stops of every variety spaced a mile or so apart. Modern interstates are efficient mechanisms of travel, but there is little about them that is particularly interesting.
If anyone doesn't get it, check out Amboy at sunset sometime. You will understand.

Neat video. Thank you. That 2 color tile motif was all the rage for kitchens and bathrooms at least as far back as 1924. All the tile in my 98 year old house is like that, one color for the large surface and a border made with another color of tile, usually darker than the surface area tile.

When I was a kid in the 1960's they had a Wigwam Motel in Horse Cave Kentucky as you mention and we always stopped there to eat at the Wigwam Restaurant during our once a year trip to Tennessee to see my grandparents. They had great food and it was really big as well. I don't know if they are still in business or not. But as a child I always thought of it as one of the highlights of the trip to eat there and always wanted to see what the inside of one of the rooms was like. Never had the chance though and haven't been back to that part of the country since.

In 1961,my family drove route 66 from Ohio to California. I remember we took a break to look at that Wigwam hotel.For 3 kids it was a great adventure.
Hi, lovely video. As someone who grew up down the street from there I feel as it's my duty to let you know there is a very good reason why the rooms were never updated. During the 90's to early 2000's they gained a very bad reputation of illegal substances, hourly prices for questionable clientele, and as the saying goes "don't touch anything without a blacklight." They're motto was "Do it in a teepee!" You two were very brave for staying there. I couldn't be paid enough to stay there ever.
We stayed there for a night last year. Believe it or not we had one of the best showers in our many nights in hotels at the wig wam. We’ve driven much of Route 66 as Far East as Holbrook. AZ where we drove around the Wig Wam there. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I hope to stay there one of these years. A few years back my wife and I stayed at the Wigwam motel in Holbrook Arizona. We loved it!!
Lived in Barstow in late 50's. Remember traveling on the Mother road. One such trip was on a bus with my father to Santa Monica when he picked up his new Renault 4cv. Trips to San Berdoo were common. Very nostalgic Jeff.
