- Jeff & Sarah recently explored the historic mining town of Jackson, Calif., and came away impressed to see the historic buildings, some of which date back to the 1850s, still in use today!
They stayed at the historic National Hotel and will show you their room and tell you about John Wayne’s time there in 1963.
The historic Main Street is also where where wine tycoon Ernest Gallo was born!
#jacksoncalifornia #historyhunters #goldrush
I hope you never quit doing this...always great to follow along on these trips back in time.
I live here in Jackson. There's so much history that you just don't know about... I've been here since 1964 and a lot has changed through the years. I'm still here...
Always love to see what you bring every Sunday. Thank you sir.
I appreciate that, Edward!
Pretty neat town with lots of history to look at, glad they have those plaques to tell the history of the buildings. Keep up the good work...
Love the little towns, so much history, history you'll never learn in schools. Thank you!
Jeff and Sarah...I can only imagine that tourism increases after you post one of your videos. They are so well done and makes one want to visit the locations you so interestingly document. Thank you for taking us along on your travels.
Thanks! That’s a very nice thing to say. Let’s hope that’s the case. I know that one man visited Copperopolis after watching our video and then he made his own video and he mentioned us in it so I know that some people are actually visiting the places that we visit.
@@jbenziggy I know that if I lived near any of the places you cover, I certainly would visit them because you make them so interesting. Thank you!
Hi Jeff and Sarah! That was such a cool hotel you stayed at. Goes to show, you can get a really nice stay in a older venue. My wife said LEGOS! right before you did LOL. I always liked visiting the gold rush area, Jackson was one I never went too. Thanks for taking us there!
Thanks Jeff, one of my wife's family members lived in Sutter Creek in a historic home and owned several businesses in Jackson. It was good to see your video. As a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West I appreciated the opening scene. My wife it the President of the Native Daughters Parlour in Modesto and we always appreciate seeing the monuments place by both organizations.
Very cool! Sutter Creek is a cool little town too.
Like watching paint chip. Enjoyed the tour of another place in this great country of ours.
Thanks 👍 Apparently a lot of folks got a kick out of my twisted tongue! LOL
Jeff & Sarah,
Thank you for all your efforts making this you tube program. My husband and I enjoy History Hunter. We hope you two will continue posting History Hunter
Thanks for watching! We plan to keep doing this as long as we have an audience!
One of my most favorite Gold Countries Haunt thanks
Haha… Love the bloopers. And the photos of you and Sarah at the end‼️👍🏻
JEFF!! I get it! Always took me 10-15 takes to do a scene when I was acting in commercials , briefly...You reminded me of myself...lol "The chips are Painting." CLASSIC
Interesting Vlog Jeff...Jackson is a fascinating old gold rush town, you know the Gallo's Parents are buried in the Scenic Cemetery in Modesto, the Catholic Section, I've visited it..
Yes. That will be a future episode!
Great stuff, just wish I was with you guys on your runs.
Jeff and Sarah, thank you for the excellent tour of Jackson! It actually looks a lot better than I remember growing up. My wife and I will eventually be down in California again to visit family and I will try to schedule a few side trips to visit Jackson, Copperopolis, and many other places you've showcased on History Hunters. I am very curious about the Early Amador Dispatch editors being taken to Alcatraz. As always, thank you for the hard work! Your content has always been excellent but your production value continues to improve with every episode. :)
Thank you very much, Mike. We value very highly your comments about our production work. I think a lot of RUclipsrs don’t put in the effort for quality and it shows we’re also glad to hear that we inspire you to visit some of these places in California that most people overlook. One of the payoffs for doing this hard work is enjoying great comments like these and we thank you.
I just love Jackson that's why I live here now
Me and my family stayed at the National Hotel in the early 80's for a big swim meat.
My dad was big into history, and he picked the National. We had one of the rooms in the front that had access to the balcony overlooking main street. It was one of the few rooms that had a bathroom at the time. The tub was one of those classic Cast Iron Claw Tubs.
My dad recalled a story after we had gone to sleep. He was sitting out on the balcony and watched a rowdy group of bar patrons leave a bar that was closing. They all started moving down the street to another bar called The Asher Club. They all chanted "Asher Club! Asher Club!" as they moved to the other open bar. LOL
I love Jackson as I do all other Mother Lode towns like San Andreas, Sonora, Sutter Creek, etc.
I've to been to and through Jackson many times and always enjoy it. Now I have even more things to check out on my next trip. Thanks
I hope the next time you get to check out the buildings up the hill! Thanks for watching and leaving the comment!
@@jbenziggy I will most certainly do that
Love the outtake. Been to Jackson many times over 50 years, but never in depth like you do. Thank you for the ride, walk. Enjoyed this.
Lorna, we are really happy that you enjoyed our visit to Jackson and hopefully someday you can do that yourself and enjoy it in person. Thank you so much.
Another home run - great video. Learned a ton!
I enjoyed your covering of Jackson, Jeff and Sarah. Never stop sharing history!
As long as we have an eager audience to watch what we produce, we will continue doing what we’re doing. Thank you for being a part of our success.
Love it. Well done. Thank you‼️
Great video Jeff,
In 1967 I was in a marching band that participated in the gold rush parade in Jackson and it still has a special memory for me, I was 17 at the time and it was a blast seeing your story about the town today. You were just a skip and a jump from the town of Ione, ca. where the old Preston castle is. I'm still hoping that you'll do a video on the old castle some day. It was a youth offender facility at one time. I was told that Merle Haggard spent a little time there in his youth. I had the misfortune of spending a little time myself in the newer facility next to the castle. I believe that Preston school of Industry has been closed now for years. I just think a story about the castle would be enjoyable for those who have never seen it, it's a beautiful land mark with a great history. Anyway, thanks for sharing your travels, and as always, you and Sarah have a great year and stay safe.
Another great episode Jeff, so nice to see Sarah out and about. Again, you are right up the road from my sister who lives in Ione. She moved up from the valley, like many others up there. Thank you for bringing us the history we might never know.
You are very welcome. But we need to thank you for watching our adventure and giving us a wonderful comment like you have.
Cool town I’m going to go check it out I’m in Fresno calf
Since you’re driving far you might as well book a room and check out all the towns around there. Sutter Creek and Angels Camp too are nice!
😎 very interesting town 👍
I've seen the filling in of windows in so many buildings, including in my own town. I've often looked and thought they would have looked so nice before. I think the same of the buildings wrapped by the art deco facade; much nicer before than after, but back in the day they thought otherwise. Jackson looks fantastic and I would love to visit. That National Hotel is beautiful. Great video.
Jeff Another great tour of Jackson, when I make it back to California from Florida I plan to visit Jackson and the hotel looks great. In my last post to you I apparently mentioned you and your wife *^&$%# Sorry I should have said Sarah. Also love the out takes at the end, you should include any you have on each video, I laughed and laughed !!!
Another home run Jeff (and Sarah)! Love the outtakes (LMAO)! While watching this I thought to myself...Jeff and Sarah should do a video trip to New Orleans. The history and old buildings could supply you with at least a years worth of videos. I know you live in the mid state so I'm curious why you haven't done anything further north like Martinez and John Muir home and the cemeteries around here? Anyways always look forward to your posts.....THANK YOU!
Hi Daniel! I very much want to get to Muir’s house and grave but the pandemic closed it off for a while. Yes the cemetery there has some folks I want to visit! Thanks for watching our videos faithfully!!!
I love all of the towns up and down Hwy 49. From Downiville to Columbia. Paint fails after awhile.👍
Did u stop at Swingles meat market in Jackson (old building with a revolving cow on the roof) been there since the 40's. BEST tritips!!
We did not see that place! Sounds like it would have made some great B-roll footage!
been there since the 40's I think the same family still owns it. People drive from all over no. cal for their meat. I spent $300 there a few weeks ago
Nice !
Thanks so much!
Higbee's Department Store had the toy display and the Red Ryder BB Gun 😀 great video, we go to Jackson quite a bit, in fact we had dinner at Strings in Martel last night, but I never knew about that well, have to check that out next time, and I'll certainly have to check out to see how much the chip is painting on that old courthouse :)
Just an opinion, I think Sarah is more than just a sidekick.
I’ve passed through Jackson many times, not knowing all the cool history that lives there
I know that I have been guilty of not stopping to see certain towns, and after a while you become so familiar that you never get to really explore a town. Best thing to do is to stop the car and walk and look. Thanks for enjoying our video.
Well done as always. I'd like to suggest a visit to Sonora. I know you've visited graveyards there already. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
We're going to Preston Castle on April 2nd, have you done an episode on Ione yet?
* Another great video Sir
You should went up to the museum is across from the elementary school. And Jackson gate road and China grave.
The museum was not open when we were there!
@@jbenziggy to bad beautiful home and lots local history.
Hold on … you two didn’t get separate rooms?? What kind of channel is this?! 😁 Very interesting town. Well done as always.
The paint on the art deco courthouse is a relatively easy fix. The old paint would need to be pressure washed off first. I would be more concerned about the electrical and plumbing systems. Joining three buildings together from different time periods has got to be iffy.
The 1930’s federal WPA built a lot of civic buildings. All over the country. Art deco being a favored style of the era
They sure did. A lot of that infrastructure is still around and crumbling today.
@@jbenziggy …. If it’s not already gone.
Do you know? Is it possible to either go ahead in or get permission to enter some of the older structures?
I think most of the buildings are business you can go into. The rest are likely closed.
So the old courthouse chip is painting, lol.
You know it! lol
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It was like stepping back in time looking at the buildings and stores. Jackson still has that “1800’s”look to it.
I like hearing about the history of these old towns and when you read the plaques that are on some of the buildings or other locations that describe what was there back then. Great job guy’s!! Totally enjoyed this! Look forward to the next one! Take care now! Frank from Philadelphia, PA.
As a native Californian, I appreciate the content you produce. There is so much interesting history throughout this beautiful state!
Me too!
I am too a native of southern calif so was the rest of my family
Jackson has the oldest Serbian Orthodox Church in North America built in the late 1800s. There were many Serbian miners in the old Gold mines surrounding Jackson. I heard there were Greek miners in the late 1800s buried in the cemetery in front of the church. Jackson has the oldest Serbian American community in North America. I think you need to come back to Jackson. I love visiting Jackson. It is full of history that I keep discovering when I walk around downtown with the awesome shops. Jackson's Main Street has a cool bookstore cafe, bakery owned by a Serb, shops, Celtic shops with all things made in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, etc. I loved this clip.
Thank you for that information. Unfortunately we didn't get over to that church and burial yard.
@@jbenziggy There is also a Serbian Children's Camp in Jackson built in 1961. Been going to the camp my whole life. It is called St. Sava Mission. It is adjacent to the local hospital which was built on land that the camp used to own and sold to them.
We've been there and were doing tourist activities for a day, beautiful place to visit. My bosses live there so I'll tell them to check out your channel tomorrow at work.
Jackson is such a beautiful town with so much history !! Thank you Jeff and Sarah for taking us all along for the ride !! ❤❤
Thank you very much. I’m glad that you enjoyed our trip to Jackson.
I love the downtown area
They have certainly embraced their history telling us a little bit about them. It has a little of an old west feel but also a little Norman Rockwell feel. The hotel you stayed it looked nice. Thanks for the tour! Oh and glad I'm not the only one who has trouble with takes!
Jackson is a lovely place. I wouldn’t mind living there. As far as flub ups, I have a lot of them. I don’t know how actors memorize their lines because I have trouble with just the on-camera presentation. I think I just get too wound up. LOL. Thanks for the nice comments!
Ha! So glad to see Sarah for her comedic delivery today! And Jeff, you vandal, chipping paint off of historic buildings. I feel completely scandalized. A beautiful town, thanks for another excellent explore.
My favorite part of California is the Gold Rush area. Filled with history and many towns so close together. I've stayed in Jackson several times as we use it for a hub to Ione, Sutter Creek, Volcano and Indian Grinding Rock State Park.
Another great episode! The outtakes at the end were priceless! I inserted the s-word at every beep 🤣
How many takes, on average, would you say it takes you to get through filming an episode? Are you ever able to do it all in one shot?
I trip over my words all the time and have to splice a lot of the time. I cannot figure out how stage actors memorize whole scripts. My brain doesn't work like that! LOL! Thanks for the great comment ... and for watching!
It's Higbee's!! Another great episode, loved the part about John Wayne, I remember hearing once that he went to the same high school as me, only many, many years earlier that is!
This video makes me want to check out Jackson better, the most I've seen of it is the casino.
Careful what you say about the hangman tree, certain people tried to erase Placerville's history regarding it's history of hangings recently. I'd hate to see that happen in Jackson too!
Really an interesting town. So many bldgs. built in the 1860's over 160 year's old.
I've always considered old structures as sacred places that have withstood the test of time and remain defiant despite time's overwhelming power to chip away. Another great video and beautifully filmed.
Give Jeff and Sarah a thumbs up, a comment and subscribe! This is exceptional content! You won’t be disappointed!
Makes me so sad because it has changed so much since I left in 1970. And I really haven't been back sense. I think at the end of video (Jackson sign) you were standing in front of where the old movie theater use to be. Showed old horror and space movie in the 60s. The Italian Picnic was an annual parade through Sutter Creek with fair rides and food in Martel. Kit Carson Days parade in Jackson. The Black Hills gold sold at the Jackson jewelry store, the old hand made and baked french bread bakery, Garibaldi's kitchen gift store, Spannetti's (sp?) hardware store. There was a nice ladies store, a drug store, a doctor office, a liquor store, a bowling alley, a Chinese café and several Italian restaurants. That tall building by the fire station was a dry goods store selling the required clothes for local high school P.E. classes, upper floors storage (I guess). My mom worked for the county for 30 years. That old court house also had the jail in it, all of 4-5 cells. Sutter Creek had more antique stores and was smaller but had one stellar thing about it was the old water run foundry down Eureka and the bordello houses. All the Italian names. Memories. We didn't care much about the mines, they were everywhere and the water wheels on the hill side. Now the highway goes around Sutter Creek. Thanks for educating me on the two mines. It would have been nice if the schools would have taken one day out of history class to tells us about some of this stuff. All I new was that gold was found and mined in 1848-49. Big gold rush. OK...But is was a great place to grow up.
Who the heck wouldn't take a check from the Duke? I had a good laugh when the symbols sounded at Sarah's painting remark. Also keep doing the bloopers 😂
Well, Jeff and Sarah, what a fantastic place. There is so much to see. As always, thank you for the research, and the historic perspective and pics, interspersed with current days. This was so interesting. 🤠👏💥
Glad you enjoyed it, Rhonda! We appreciate you letting us know!
Spent a weekend in Cool for my nephews wedding back in November and had breakfast in Auburn. A lot of history in that part of our state. Thanks for taking us along!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I enjoyed Auburn as well.
town was notorious for legislature to come and Whore Around!!!
Another beautiful and historical town. Thank you for keeping the history of these small towns alive.
Good morning folks. Enjoyed coming along with y'all through Jackson, & yes, you'll need to do more episodes there. Seems like a place where there's more than meets the eye initially.
Saw that Missouri tag in the window & couldn't resist saying "Good Morning Jeff & Sarah" out loud.... 😂
My father was the Amador county welfare department from June 1957 to March 1959. His office was the in the basement. I offer went down after school (just up the hill) and waited for him to get off work so I could ride home with him. We went to the Methodist church and I remember the movie theater, dime store, swimming pool and the skating rink in Martel.
I love jackson. Dandelion days, and the candy store. I miss some of the shops. Covid took them out.
It could be they changed the windows out on that brick building because, they probably offered an easy way in for burglars. Yes, Matthew Thomas was a firefighter who was killed in the line of duty. I've been through Jackson, CA. It is alot like Grass Valley, CA. I love those bloopers, Jeff. It also reminds me I love to chip paint off old buildings however alot if the old paint is leaded.
Pulled over to eat 👍🏼. Sara was on you about the building & it’s paint. 😂, as for the bloopers 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤣
Howdy Jeff, at approximately the 18:20 run time of your video the plaque located on the WFB wall has inscribed at the lower portion the name JAMES D. PHELAN,
which is indeed the San Bernardino County town of Phelan! ( names after said such Senator) An interesting trivia tidbit only exhibited through/from History Hunters.
As always Thank you for yet one more grand video production.
Well that is a very interesting observation. Are you sure that they are the same individual and not two people with the same name? I always double check when I find discoveries like that, but you’re probably right.
Hey! There’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Church behind the courthouse. Been to Mass there many times. Gold Mine Jewelers has been in that spot for decades. Great town!
You could have said, "You don't need to get THIS close to the Old Amador Courthouse to see the paint chipping." Ha ha. What fun!
I just moved to Jackson a year ago, you’re filming in my neighborhood. I live across the street from the cemetery and a couple blocks from Main Street.
If you’re looking for a place to eat, about one mile north of town just straight ahead if you keep going north on Main Street on Jackson Gate Rd is Teresa’s Italian Restaurant. It opened in 1921 and is still in the same family and location. Great food family style all homemade Italian dinners. Check it out. It’s a story all it’s own.
Jeff, it's obvious that you and Sarah really enjoy touring and "hunting history!" Thanks so much for sharing it with us! Safe travels you two and I'm looking forward to the tagging along on your next tour!!
Thank you Nick! We appreciate your encouragement and blessings! We enjoy what we do!
I lived there from 2003-07, there was not a good place to eat there then and the people were very cliquish. I can get along with anyone but the people there were nice, but if your were not from there you would never be one of them. Just saying.
Love Jackson a great historic town. There’s also a great old / used bookstore by the Fire Dept. Tons of old books with some local history.
I will have to duck in there next time we are up there!
There’s a great Sherlock Holmes display, upstairs, in the bookstore! Check out the profile of Ol’ Sherlock in the window! They used to serve tea in this area, too!
Thanks for all the info about Jackson we go there a lot as we love to drive HYWY 49 to James town or Sonora
Curious if anyone knows why most of the plaques have a penny resting on top?
Sunday morning, coffee, and History Hunters. Thank you for the informative historic trip.
Our pleasure, Norma!
HEY, JEFF & SARAH What's up Guys,,, Well Yeah that looked like An old building so yes It needs a paint job But the town of Jackson Has Alot of really old And cool looking Building's with Alot of Awesome architecture
And also a lots of old western town History
OK Take care stay safe and will see you on the next video project
Jackson really has a charm that was made possible by the old buildings being preserved. Stockton, on the other hand, knocked down most of their really nice old brick buildings and an amazing City Hall rather than preserve them! I'm sure it all comes down to cost!
I was raised in this town. Still consider it home. My Aunt and Grandma opened a store called The Jackson Cathouse. Grandma was a psychology professor at UC Davis in Sacramento. She passed away a few years ago from cancer.
It was almost wiped out in 98 or 99 when a fire broke out at a record store. Store wasnt opened for long.
Jeff, Sarah, another outstanding video!!! Thank you for taking the time to edit your videos, when you add in those sidebars of stories of history, the videos then take on whole new level of interest! You seem so comfortable with your subject matter, as we travel along on these adventures that you share with us! Thank you! My biggest worry is though, that these videos will become so popular that we Cereians will lose our favorite Editor 😳 I hope not😁 Tom in Ceres
I wouldn't mind a change of scenery after 34-1/2 years in the same place! LOL
I have seen all of your videos and can’t express how much I have enjoyed every single one of them. I look forward to each new one! Thank you!
Jackson's history was so interesting. I really enjoyed learning about this town.🤩🤩
So much interesting information. Still laughing about Jeff chipping the paint.
Would you consider doing a segment on the Gallo family? I trust it's not something you want to focus on but it's California history.
Thanks! Actually the Gallo subject is on my list to cover.
Great job with this Jeff ! The filming, the pictures and the history telling of it ! You always do your homework and put alot of effort into your work and it shows ! What a historical town ! I will share this with my Raymond California friend and family, and perhaps visit there when we go there to visit them late summer early fall. Thanks ! Bob
I was following the Gold Rush mother Lode Trail on Highway 49 and I stayed several days in Jackson it was such an interesting town I really loved it thanks for the video
Just love your coverage of such places. Awesome every time!
Loved it. I'd enjoy whatever research you were able to find on some of those unknown. ---Outtakes are funny, especially the facial expressions!---Sarah, sidekick?! I'm sure her sense of humor contributed to that moniker!
Semi-oblivious sidekick 😁
I'm curious when you guys upload on Sundays is it footage from the prior weekend ?
Not necessarily. This one was like a month and week ago!
Neat little town. A lot (all of them?) of the plaques had a penny on them. 🤔 Curious.
Yes, I noticed that too about the pennies being placed on the plaques. I have no idea what that was all about. Thank you so much for watching her video, Betsy.
you should have your own national tv show. you are that talented and work that hard, but im glad you dont because i dont like 20 minutes of comercials on a 30 minute show. havent turned tv on in months. i wish the best for you and family
Thanks for your confidence in our show quality! We truly appreciate your dedication to watching what we produce!
What a beautiful historic town. Hope you enjoyed your stay Jeff and Sarah. God bless🙏
Super cool. We have a son named Jackson and now we just visit. ❤️
I liked this video. Jeff you lucked out being able to walk around and photograph the old downtown area on a Sunday. The best part were the views up and down the streets without tons of cars, trucks being parked there and blocking your view. I looked at Jackson on Google Maps and noticed the very large Cemetery there. You mentioned that you recognized some names from your visit in the cemetery. So when will we see that part of your visit? Great video as usual and I look forward to another video done there in Jackson. Be safe! Oh, what was the temperature that Sunday morning?
Yes we will show some of the cemetery but we also included part of the cemetery in the video on Mike Tovey released two Sundays ago. I'd say the temp was probably 54 or so that morning. Thanks so much for watching, David!
Another interesting video… do we have one of Jackson Cemetery coming soon ?
There will be another video on the Argonaut mine disaster did we take a look at that cemetery. So yes, to answer question.
Another great video! Jackson is actually one of my dream retirement towns. And glad you changed your intro. The last one was more like a ghost hunting type intro. Keep up the good work!
At the time the cover photo was taken, Highway 49 went down that street, logging trucks and all…Been there, done that 😉
Legend has it the chip is still painting lol jk great episode.
It sure is. 🤣
Awesome town !! My great grandma lived here and idk why my great grandpa came here, but Jackson is where they met!!...early 1900's...right now my niece lives there, shes the deputy district for the county...
