Howard Jones wrote some of the best, smartest, catchiest songs of the 80s New Wave era. Even people who didn't like New Wave like his music. He has a great library of work, and is still putting out great songs. Got to see him live a few years ago, and he still sounded as good as he was in the 80s.
I was clinically depressed for much of 1983.....this song helped me to come out of my depression, and accept who and what I was, a gay man.. I took the advice in the song, and I threw off my mental chains....something I will be eternally grateful to Mr. Jones for......
Gee's ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I hope I can be full of energy beans when I reach 66 years old.Still my Favourite Song :Like to Get to know U well Extended version, his like the Extended 🇬🇧 Version of 🇬🇧 George ♓Harrison😿.Wow 66years👌🏼old & his still Feeling it. What a Legend Howard☮️Jones the 80's are the Greatest time in music✌🏼...
Lol. Brill!! So many memories of this as a kid. Not least one of my mates dressing & trying to sing this song! Badly! lol. im well in my 40's. and im determined to b youngh minded allways. Throw off those mental chains?? Very Zen like that.
My very first song I obsessed over back when I bought the album in '83 and it is still my all time number one favorite song And still obsessing over it 41 years later! Absolutely timeless.
I flew to London from Sweden last year, inNovember 2010 only to see his anniversary concert at the IndigO2. BEST concert memory of my life! Howard Jones deserves his status as a synt pop icon.
Great, Great artist, excellent composer, those were the original people, so creative. What the time it was! I remember i was studying political sciences in my college at Lahore (Pakistan) and this song was like hottest one, I used to play it with full volume on my Akai tape deck!
I wanted to 'throw off my mental chains' so I thought I'd look at vids of the music I grew up with. And 1983 was a happy year for me. I think Howard looks good here-I want a hug from him:)
A few years ago I went to see Bumble Bee about a Transformer the movie. Voltswagen beetle the car. Howard Jones was on the movie soundtrack with Things can only get better. Top tune.
Saw Howard the other day at Freemont Street Experience in Las Vegas (it was a free show by the way, attended by many). I was really surprised, for an older guy etc. he's really rocking. One could learn a lot from this guy esp. as far music the writing itself goes. Great sounds off that keyboard, great vocals too.
Love His Music and Lyrics! Not a bad business role model! Stay Happy Howard we loved your positive upbeat style and enjoy all your songs.....Me, myself and I at least!!!
I watched all of this show and Howard and Nick Heyward were the only ones that had live music as well as vocals! Great stuff Howard, Robbie and Laura!!!
Brilliant - I missed this at the time so thanks so much for uploading. Howard still stands head and shoulders above other artists of that time (and now!)
wow! Thanks for uploading this!!! I had no idea that this was on tv till the next day when my friend told me about it! I'm so glad I got to see it here! Thanks for uploading it! Mr. Jones, you are the greatest!
I agree I own 2 Synths from the 80's one is a Roland JX8P and the other is a Yamaha DX7 prob 2 of the best analog synths ever made with mega punch and sounds..
Everyone has got the lyrics wrong so far.. it's not "man to chains", no "metal chain" it's "Throw off your mental chains"... such a powerful song. I always get goosebumps
gary harris Yeah, reminds me of a rant video I watched yesterday. There were songs on there (wrst music videos of 2013 or something) and one of them was just a black man singing, 'Wop, wop, wop.' Wtf.
I'm sure I read that al;though people thought Howard was a techno wiz - the only thing sequenced on his first album was the drums... as another poster says - to keep time and get the takes right was so hard! But he seems to be a complete master of his art. The 80's salute you Mr Howard Jones!
fantastic years on, how can you say a bad word about a real positive track.loved it then love it now. Feel sorry for the kids now, cos u got ta b street blud.if it aint fra ma clik aint kool. Whatever the shit that means (heard it today in Croydon) )
he was a classically-trained musician, so I guess he is different from the rest of the musicians.... HE COULD THINK!!!! But yeah, 80s music was one of the best ever!!!!

The new equipment sounds awful, you can NEVER do better than the original ~~ fantastic song and glad I saw him live last year which sounded a whole lot better than this. Which TV program is this from.

Another great 80's track with great lyrics. We all need this attitude more nowadays...not to crack up, see both sides and keep sane!.
Only thing happier than this song is hearing him do it all these years later and it sounds wonderful.
I flew to London from Sweden last year, inNovember 2010 only to see his anniversary concert at the IndigO2. BEST concert memory of my life! Howard Jones deserves his status as a synt pop icon.
Howard, your azz rocks...child from the 80's!!
THIS is why the 80s were the best! Where else will you find music like this?
Great, Great artist, excellent composer, those were the original people, so creative. What the time it was! I remember i was studying political sciences in my college at Lahore (Pakistan) and this song was like hottest one, I used to play it with full volume on my Akai tape deck!

Howard's voice still has that charm it did back in his days!

he sounds great live, which is more than can be said for a lot of 'singers' today
Ahh... brings back memories of the Butlins disco!
That is so nice read and good for you! Life is way to short to spend it beeing closed off or up. Take it from a hospice nurse!
That riff!
Portal to the past.
Love it
if there was a portal back to the 80`s id be on it,truly good times non of this shite we have to put up with now.
gary harris Yeah, reminds me of a rant video I watched yesterday. There were songs on there (wrst music videos of 2013 or something) and one of them was just a black man singing, 'Wop, wop, wop.'

I just went to the Wikipedia page for Howard and he is 69, going on 70 very soon . Gosh I hate the passage of time/
shit im gettin real old seems like yesturday
Por la que me gustaba este tema, me lo encontró mi hermano Christian, me parece que sale también en un episodio de "Breaking Bad", en una hedalería.
The tag is not deceiving, the actual title of the track is "New Song"
Throw off your mental chains...Sing it Loud in this day and age..woohoohoo😂❤❤❤
New thin synths just don't cut it.
Where's the classic Mimo-Clown of this song ?
This song got reagge vibe.
😎😃🤗
Where is the mime artist?
He threw off his mental chains, challenged preconceived ideas, and said goodbye to long standing fears.
The lady in the back was she there just to do the woo woo woo but I’d live to do that bit
he was a classically-trained musician, so I guess he is different from the rest of the musicians.... HE COULD THINK!!!! But yeah, 80s music was one of the best ever!!!!
I used to thinkt he said "Grow up you're meant to change"!!
You guys in UK are so lucky to have this program on TV!
How can I get this show? Is it released on DVD?
Howard ..... This is GREAT ...
But please do this song again using a Yamaha DX7
There is NOTHING that sounds like a Yamaha DX7
Okay, I'm a 15 year old emo girl, but I love him and this song!! xD
om gate, gate, para gate, parasam gate, Bodhi Swaha!
just brilliant = 2:55 - 3:29
Where's Jed?

@bakic21156 At least he still has enough hair on his head to spike it up the way he did back in the early 80s
The new equipment sounds awful, you can NEVER do better than the original ~~ fantastic song and glad I saw him live last year which sounded a whole lot better than this. Which TV program is this from.
