Joseph Lyle Menendez (born January 10, 1968) and Erik Galen Menendez (born November 27, 1970), collectively referred to as the Menendez brothers, are American brothers who were convicted in 1996 of the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez.
On an August evening in 1989, José and Kitty were watching a movie in the den of their sprawling Beverly Hills mansion at 722 North Elm drive, when Lyle and Erik walked into the room carrying shotguns. The boys then let the bullets fly.
José was shot six times, including once at point-blank range in the back of the head. Kitty was shot nine times but somehow remained alive. She was found lying in the hallway following a trail of blood, suggesting that she had made a valiant effort to get away while Lyle went out to his car to reload his rifle. When he came back, he delivered the fatal shot to the side of her face.
The boys planned to wait for the police to respond to the sound of gunshots, but they never came. So the two brothers got in the car and began to prepare their alibi. They drove to a movie theater and bought tickets to a movie, then disposed of their guns, bloodied clothing, and spent shotgun shells in different locations.
After getting home around midnight, Lyle called 911 and cried to the dispatcher that somebody killed his parents.
The two boys were tried simultaneously but with different judges. The trials were broadcast on TV and quickly became a media sensation. Erik and Lyle's defense argued that the brothers had no choice but to murder their parents.
Erik testified that after confronting his parents about the sexual abuse he'd suffered at his father's hands since childhood, José threatened to kill him if he didn't keep it a secret. In court, Lyle stated: "I thought we were in danger. I felt he had no choice. He would kill us. He'd get rid of us in some way.."
Lyle and Erik Menéndez were convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a murder. Both were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is the second season of the American biographical crime drama anthology television series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. This season centers on the 1989 murders of José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), who were killed by their sons, Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch).
It is the second season in the Monster anthology series, following Dahmer. Having initially ordered the program in 2020 as a limited series, Netflix announced in 2022 that it had been renewed as an anthology series, with two further editions based on the lives of "other monstrous figures". The second season, which focuses on the Menendez brothers, was announced to be in development on May 1, 2023.
Upon its premiere on September 19, 2024, the season received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances, music, and overall production quality but criticized its runtime, inconsistent tone, and the incestuous depiction of the Menendez brothers. Erik Menendez denounced the season for its inaccuracies, particularly the portrayal of Lyle Menendez. Despite the controversies, it achieved global commercial success, debuting as the number-one series on Netflix worldwide. A third season is in development, starring Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein.
How do you hear over 10 gunshots and not think much of it? 🤔 I’ve never been to the Beverly Hills area, but here in my neck of the woods it would definitely raise some eyebrows.
I think it was soundproof
It’s very quiet there and yes the houses are huge but not that huge.
house was sound proof
Complete disbelief. The neighbours thought that there could never be a brutal murder in Beverly Hills. And the Menendezes seemed to be a perfect functional family to the outside world. No one would have guessed that they would be shot. There is an interview with a teenage boy who was riding his bike that evening and heard the shots. He thought there was a party and the noise came from firecrackers... 🎉
@@naomitims4521I would say over 10,000 sq ft is pretty huge..and the menendez house was on the smaller side of neighborhood homes
Another great video Scott. 👏 I have a Mark Jackson NBA card that has the brothers in the background sitting court side of the Knicks game after the murders....pretty eerie. 😬
Great job on covering the story Scott, I remember when this happened, it was all over the news! 🙏
That was so horrific I remember it like it was yesterday 😢
Yup. Some here.
Wow you’re remarkable Scott. There’s no way I could remember all of the information without printing it our or making note cards
“Elm Street” That’s been long forgotten. No gawking tourists whatsoever.
This is the 3rd video I believe you've done on the Menendez Brothers and things related to them, I saw the video where you visited the final resting place of Jose and Kitty. It was a good video, I think you mentioned the Menendez former home in your video about what some would call the Beverly Hills Triangle(other crazy things happened within the Triangle as you showcased in that video, also a good video). I(and I'm sure others) wonder if there's been any paranormal activity in that house, we'll never know. You mentioned that Nicole Brown had a baby shower in the same living room where the murders occurred(you also mentioned a friend of Nicole's lived in the house before the Menendez's), talk about crazy. Thank you Mr. On Tape for another great video, much respect to you good Sir
@@RetroEli82 Mr. On Tape hahahahaha Im gonna use that now ☺
@@WendiintoancientHistory Coolsville 👍🏽👍🏽
Prince and Elton John also lived in that house before the menendez moved in
As I am watching this vid, just received a pop-up from TMZ...'Major Announcement by L.A. County D.A." in regards to the appeal by Erik and Lyle, asking that their convictions be overturned...
I JUST HEARD ABOUT THAT TO THAT DA IS A FRUIT CAKE
I got one also from FOX saying there was some kind of letter that predates the incident by several months.
Hi Scott, last I night I watched an interview on this case just after your video, they said the boys were abused by there father. I certainly couldn’t live in that house after what happened there. Thank you for the other side of the story. Take care xxxx🤟🏼✌️👍👋❤️
I think kitty knew exactly what her husband was doing
She did but she still chose Jose over her children because she loved Jose more than she loved her kids. She said countless times to her sons that she wished they had never been born, they ruined her life, and was jealous that Jose was giving them more attention than to her.
@@doomgeneration6124Nope. Not how women operate. It’s all about resources with women. They don’t truly love men. They are incapable of doing so. Far too self centered and selfish for that. It’s all about… resources. If it happened, she went along with it to not lose her lifestyle. Women are incapable of lowering their lifestyle standards so their selfishness can let them choose lifestyle over even her own children’s situation. Sad but such is the reality of life. She didn’t want to lose her lifestyle and reputation with the community.
How does anyone know any of this?
I always questioned whether he sexually abused the boys... I personally believe they were spoiled and used to getting what they wanted until Jose cut them off in an attempt to make them earn a living and they couldn't handle it... Good stuff as always Scott... Thanks for sharing.
He wasn't doing anything. Perhaps he was an ass-hole but he wasn't sexually abusing his sons. That's a lie.
I have the Mark Jackson basketball card with the Menendez brothers in the background lol.
The crazy thing is that was after the murders. They went on a spending spree
Great video Scott no one deserves to die unless there is extreme circumstances
i love and appreciate you scott. and i also loved and appreciated my wonderful parents and never would have ever thought about harming them. i don't know what happend to the MENENDEZ bothers parents so i guess i have no op;inion. I was honored to be my parents daughter and honored to watch you all the time scott.💞💞Vickie
I remember this case very well. I was a senior in high school. Great job as always Scott. I always look forward to your videos.
Lets get into this episode shall we scott .safe travels ❤❤
Hi Scott, love your channel. Greetings from Germany 👋
Wild timing. The L.A.. District attorney is looking at new evidence that might call for a new sentencing hearing.
Thank you so much Scott. Really appreciate your videos and the respect that you show to everyone. I personally believe that the he Menendez brothers were telling the truth. Just my personal opinion. Once again thank you for the work you put into each video that you make. Take care. 💖💕
I just started watching the Netflix series, so many details being revealed! Thanks Scott for this video, you remain the BEST RUclipsr 💞
ACTUAL details, or Hollywood-ized ‘details’?
I@@Nephilimfields saw the series. I did enjoy it but it was dramatized. Not factual. Did make me rewatch the trials though. Which was shocking. I'd forgotten it. They should be released now.
I'm sure we'd all like the answer to that. @@Nephilimfields
thanks for doing the story
That’s so weird, lastnight I was going through you’re videos trying to see if you had a crime scene locations for this case but I I only saw you did the graves. Boom! Here we are
Hey Scott awesome video I appreciate the job you do on your videos love that you do all the research you do you do search a absolutely fantastic job I'm Love your channel you will always be my favorite RUclipsr 💕
I agree... luv ya Scott ❤❤❤
I graduated high school in 1989. These men fucked up due to greed. When you kill your parents don’t go and buy Rolex watches. Porches, restaurants etc. they were not good boys. They were thieves. They were embarrassing to their parents. This was pre meditated. Jose told them they were not going to be Nepo babies. Lyles father paid a inch of money for his wig. He paid for Princeton. People today do not discipline their children. They are horrible brothers.
Another excellent video Scott thank you
Thanks for the story
Awesome Scott. Love these kind of videos. Kinda reminds me of the krays brothers. By the way I seem to find your instagram stories very interesting and entertaining as much as your RUclips channel
The District Attorney gave a conference yesterday saying they’re investigating the new evidence. I think they should be released.
Thanks for sharing this story, Scott.
Apparently been alot of action on their cases lately, lets see how it plays out.
Thanks for working hard on every video you do
thanks Scott I'm watching the Netflix series now .
Geat video, Scott! as always :)
Hey Scott Happy almost Friday. Great video as always and thanks for sharing it with us ✌️✌️
No one on the Menendez brothers side agree with the crime they committed, they just didn’t deserve life in prison. That’s why the first jury was split, all the men didn’t believe them, the women wanted manslaughter. Had this case been about two sisters the outcome would have been completely different. I also believe if this case happened at least a decade later, the public would be more open minded to abuse on boys & men. The patriarchy adversely affects men too. Just because someone is from a good neighborhood or has money doesn’t mean abuse or neglect doesn’t happen.
Also, telling abuse victims to “just leave” is not only ignorant, it’s irresponsible. Leaving an abuser is the most dangerous part of getting out of the relationship & most are attacked or killed when they do, especially if they don’t have a plan. I have my family’s information hidden by court order & don’t use social media under my legal name because I don’t want my ex to find me.
My father passed away 2019. Thank you for your videos. God bless. Peace out.
I hope your father is resting peacefully ❤️
@@SCOTTONTAPE I hope so as well
Hi.scott I remember this story I watch. Program on TV here in England 🏴 ❤
The fact that a couple of the former members of the 80's band Menudo said they were (allegedly) SA'd by Jose Menendez as well, and more than a few of the family members knew about the abuse of the brothers lends more credability to the brother's claim. Many. Many kids have been abused in different ways and yet never even thought of unaliving their parents. I was abused and it never occurred to me to end my parent's but I guess everyone is different. Thanks Scott for the video, and stay safe!
All after Jose was dead. Where is the actual proof?

Hey scott love the video very sad story love the way you tell it keep up the good work luv ya
I dont have opinion on it either way .i am just here to watch a great story .i dont like to challenge or debate .just like watching you tell a story Scott
Everyone is allowed their opinion as long as people treat each other respectfully-thats what makes it interesting, the different views on what happened
Another great video!!!
I remember this well, I was 18 at the time.
Thank you for another great video Scott!!
Great video
I heard someone once say “if it were the Menendez Sisters they’d be out by now”… and I just think Gypsy Rose got out after murdering her Mom for abuse. If it was abuse, and it went on for as long as its said it did with both parents involved, then I can’t say I disagree that they should be out.
Exactly
I don't know how anyone could live in that house, CREEPY!
I would never live in a house where a murder had been committed. It would not bother some people but its bad mojo - nope!
That was my first thought I was like, eww. I could never live in the house.
Another great video Scott. Had never heard that about Nicole Simpson and that’s quite a connection. Thank you as always! ✌🏻 ❤
Awesome video Scott. ❤
Can’t wait to watch this one tonight thank you
Good one Scott thanks
Hey Scott I’m your first comment. Love your channel
Nice one Scott 👍.
Great video. You know how much I like true crime stories.🥰
Im on the fence with all this. Part of me thinks they were spoiled rich kids yet a part of me
thinks its possible they could have been abused. Its pretty telling how they felt about their
parents (besides the mur-ders) just by looking at where they were buried. For being so influential, I would have thought
the headstone would have been much grander, over looking some beautiful spot. NOPE! Simple
headstone, wayyyyyyyyyyyy in the back by the neighbors fence.
You can be a spoiled rich kid and still be abused.
@@jenniferhemstreet568 yes I know
If jose's mother and sisters, and kitty's sister and her kids and all of their extended family members supporting the brothers is not telling and not enough for you to believe them then I don't know what to tell you.
Because 24 member of that family, grandparent, aunts, uncles, cousins, coaches have witnessed physical abuse and 3 cousins in the trial mentioned them being in the home and hearing their father abusing erik, one of them was told by lyle that him and his dad were touching each other and she told the mother and she did NOTHING.
If this is not enough then yall as a society are a lost case and won't believe men when it comes to sexual abuse and that is very disturbing to someone who suffered abused by a relative when I was a kid.
@@malconsak Why do u feel the need to tell me anything? Im on the fence as I said and I dont think u are any kind of expert here. Ive watched the trials, the series, Ive seen all the evidence as well as u. If this video triggers u then why watch it and then tell everyone u were molested as a kid? Im not denying they were abused, its all possible but the reason they killed their parents I dont believe was solely because of it and thats my opinion which Im entitled to but thanks for your novel
Great job on this story Scott. I haven't seen the new series about them yet but, this continues to be an interesting case!
Here's a first - visiting the grave first & then the story.
Great video Scott
Scott you as always did a great job in reporting a crime that hit all over the world , I myself never came to any conclusions I just don’t know. This crime was huge in L A.
I'm watching all those court cases
I did too. Made me sick. Who could make that up.
As always another awesome video. Thanks for your hard work ❤
This happened before I was born, so I didn't know about this case until I got older, when I heard it the first time I had to re-watch it because I was confused and shock because I didn't understand why they did it until later on
Now that I'm older and can watch videos on the case, I'm conflicted. On one hand, I don't want to not believe someone that was possibly molested. On the other hand, both brothers were smiling while on trial and there were times where it seemed as if they were fake crying.
Great video Scott. I started watching the Netflix documentary but it was poorly done with unnecessary scenes.
This was crazy idk what to believe about this case but the Netflix movie was pretty good imo
You are brilliant thank you for a very informative interesting video
I read that Kim K is working to free them. I’m now sure how I feel about it. It was a brutal murder… I remember when this happened… Thanks for sharing.
Another great job Scott....
So I’m hearing that it maybe lowered to a manslaughter charge due to the alleged abuse. If so, they will be released with time served. Something interesting to watch that is for sure. Thanks @SCOTTONTAPE for all you do.
Those two brothers should never get out of jail keep them in there till they rot away.
I went looking on your channel for a video last weekend after watching the doc! I knew you’d come through for us Scott 🤣🎉
HAPPY THRILLER..PEACE OUT
Back in the early 90s, a kid in my neighbourhood murdered his own parents & sister (this was at Don Mills & Steeles in Thornhill).

Law & Order True Crime was a good series about this case.
Just watched the Netflix series and they really left a lot of interesting scenarios out of the news and the general public should be aware of before jumping to conclusions.

There was so much abuse. They should be out now to live there life. No one should have to endure what they did. They have served there time
love your content keep it up scott on tape
@ Scott on tape I remember watching the trial and the cousin on the stand saying erik told him about the abuse
Trish Paytas just talked about the new drama about the brothers on Netflix. I left a comment on her podcast today that she should have you on (if you wanted to, lol). She was also was in an Eminem music video.

I understand people do die in houses but I find it hard to believe someone can live in that house today knowing of the horrific thing that happened there! Not judging the owner but I couldn’t live there….
Agreed, in Ontario Canada, the house is usually levelled. I don’t think people want to live in a house where murder(S) take place 😞☹️🤷🏼♂️🤷♀️
Another great video Scott. I haven't seen the netflix show yet but hear I should watch.
I just started watching their story on Netflix last night, it is so horrific, I remember when it happened, I watched the news nonstop. After watching their story on Netflix, I am not sure how I feel about now. The way they killed the parents, it had to be something else besides money, their rage (especially Lyle), was too passionate.
I really need to start watching more of your videos Scott big fan from Dublin Ireland. And I am also a fan of Corey haim .thanks for this Scott 💚🇮🇪💚
Awesome video
I believe that they were abused, I watched the trial I don’t think you can fake those kind of emotions.
I hope they are freed they have served enough time
Imagine watching netflix series and you are exactly at the living room where killing happen
I'm not sure if I believe the story of everything I don't wanna say the words because I don't want to get Scott in trouble. But if it did happen it's horrible.
Hi Scott
I also don’t understand why the boys didn’t go to the police with their accusations.
It was a different time; they probably thought they wouldn't be believed. None of the men on the jury believed boys/men could be abused in that way.
