  • Using the 8-stage model for the Serve by Dr. Mark Kovacs I'm looking at Ash Barty's tennis serve.
    The stages
    1. Start
    2. Release
    3. Loading
    4. Cocking of the racket
    5. Acceleration
    6. Contact
    7. Deceleration
    8. Finish
    each have some specific key points that you want to pay attention to.
    I'm also addressing some no longer applicable serving myths such as "a serve is like a throw", "push your left hip over the baseline" and "down together and up together".
    If you want to improve your tennis serve, this is the model on which you should base your training!

    One of the best servers on the WTA Tour! I'm analyzing Ash Barty's serve using Dr. Mark Kovacs' "8 stages of the serve" model.

    I've seen so many serve videos on RUclips, probably spent at least 25+ hours just RESEARCHING (let alone practicing) the serve.
    This "short" 12 minute video made all the difference. This has been by far the best serve video on RUclips.
    I don't know why every other video kind of glosses over the racket drop. That's where my problem was. They talk about it, but they don't really explain it. You explaining it as cocking and seeing Ash's positioning, saying that's where most rec players struggle. It really spoke to me.
    So I went out today with my girlfriend to practice our serves and I was serving faster and more consistently than I've ever served before. Is anywhere near where it needs to be? Absolutely not. Am I still smiling like a mad man? Absolutely!!
    The foundation has been laid and it's all thanks to you! Thank you so much Meike! Liked and subscribed 🎾

    I think we're overdue for a "good enough" serve exemplar. Rather than always looking at pros with their exceptional abilities, let's look at a very competent 50+ 4.0 player's serve. Something more rooted in our shared reality. Something a rec player can actually relate with. I'm never getting Ash's knee bend in 1000 years.

    Another great video of yours. Thank you very much. Thank you also for analysing a woman's serve too.
    I read that the kicking leg at the end of the serve motion helps creating topspin, or rather comes asa result of hitting a topspin or kick serve, like in a sense the 'jumping'is a result of the loading of the leg(s).
    Interesting tidbits about Boris Becker and his hips and knee operations, I did not know that.

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  2 года назад

      You'll see the leg kick at the end on all types of serve because it helps you not fall on your face. Maybe it feels more pronounced on the kick. And yes, Becker's body is a wreck.

    • @johnnyblackrants7625
      @johnnyblackrants7625 Год назад

      From experimenting, it seems like the more vertical your shoulders at contact, and the more upward you swing the racket, the more your body kicks the back leg up to rebalance. If you watch players hit overheads when they're very close to the net, their back legs don't kick up at all, because they can just throw their racket forward like a casual football throw in that situation.

    Great video and analysis Meike! Thank you! Would really like to hear your thoughts on Ash's and Shapovalov's loading technique that seems to "cut the pony tail", vs Roger's "knocking the birthday hat". Thank you again!

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  3 года назад +1

      In my opinion, it's a style thing. If you look at the loading stage all good servers (including, of course, the three that you mention) look almost identical. It may be that one style over the other helps an individual player to get better and correctly into the loading position and that's why they developed it.

    Excellent analysis! However, one thing I have noticed Ash Barty do (not apparent in this video) is that she is creating a hook with her when she is holding the racquet. I would be very instructive to know why she is doing it. I think lot of the other players today do the same. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • @MeikeBabelTennis

      @Zenon-fg4dw 2 года назад +1

      @@MeikeBabelTennis Oh sorry. The missing word is WRIST. When she holds her racquet, she bends her wrist. I guess the proper term might be PRONATE? A lot of other pros do the same.

    Great video Coach Babel! Would she rotate her hips earlier for a slice or flat serve?

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  3 года назад +1

      Ideally not, you'd just pronate more or less with your forearm and change the way you swing up to the ball slightly. If you turn open to early it's a major loss of stability and power. Thank you for the question!

    I’ll disagree a tiny bit about getting to 3. One of the things Barty does really well just before 2. and going into 3. is that she rotates her hips closed. You can really see how much by watching the increase in separation between her left leg and her right leg in this view. Are there other ways to get to the position at 3? Sure, but I think that Barty’s hip closing move between 2 and 3 is one of the keys to getting her into such a strong load and something that a lot of players who don’t get into such a strong load position could incorporate into their serves.

  • @bournejason66

    The side the racket face hit the ball facing to the right after contact, is that something we have to think about ? And does that apply to different types of serves or only certain kinds of serve? 🙏🙏

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  3 года назад +2

      Don't worry too much about it in the beginning. If you have the correct grip and work on the pronation (thumb of right hand turns up and out on the upswing) your racket will automatically face that way. And yes, in all types of serve the racket face will look that way.

    Does the degree of upper body lean back in the preparation phase vary depending on whether you're hitting flat or kick? Also, what's the variation with how far into the court a player should end? Here, Ash doesn't end very far into the court, whereas some players end up a few full steps into it. Also, what are the typical variations that shorter players use to compensate for their height, or taller players use to take advantage of it?

  • @alastairtheduke
    @alastairtheduke Год назад

    Is it considered bad technique that the racquet drops towards the net? Most players drop towards the left fence (for a right handed player). I have this 'problem' and I think it is because my drop is more of an arm bending down vs elbow traveling up. I do achieve great racquet drop though where the racquet reaches below my shorts.

  • @bournejason66

    For a beginner, do you recommend to start from step 1 or from step 3? What’s your recommendation for a beginner to learn serve?

    • @MeikeBabelTennis

      That's why it's so crucial that you have the first three stages the right way because then the rest of the motion is correct as well.
