    Situated north of the Amazon rainforest, French Guiana is France’s only overseas territory on the American continent. Some 95% of its land is blanketed by tropical woodland. The Maroni river, which separates French Guiana from Suriname, is at the heart of people's lives. FRANCE 24 takes you to meet some of the locals, who make a living along the river's banks.

    The government in Paris needs to invest in French Guiana more. There's so much potential there, and it IS an integral part of the Republic, as much as Lyon or Paris itself.

      It's already the case, the problem is the population there.
      About 80% of the territory GDP come from investment of the French state.
      It is the reason why French Guiana is the richest territory in South America.

      Actually, if you look at the map of Europe printed on the euro banknotes, you will find French Guyana, and other French Caribbean territories. You will find also the Spanish Canary Islands, the Portuguese Azores islands, but you will find neither French New Caledonia nor Dutch Curaçao. New Caledonia still uses the French francs, and Curaçao still use the guilders!

    To the people from French Guiana, how is the situation about secession from France? Is there any support in the population to this idea? I mean, it's a sparsely populated territory, but there are countries who seceded with even a smaller population (Nauru, Barbados, Tonga...). It would be great if anyone from French Guiana could answer :)

    • @jetaddicted
      @jetaddicted 2 года назад +14

      Secede?!
      Why?
      We have neighbors east and west who did that and we’re better off.
      Granted, not everything is perfect, we have unemployment (more so than Metropolitan France) and criminality indeed, alongside a lagging investment plan, yet there is a reason Brazilians and Surinamese do their best to come live here.
      Note: Guyane has been a part of France for over four centuries, to talk about independance now is kind of « passé » ;)
