HAH! TOLD YOU SO!
So right🫡
as a digital artist a pen without pressure sensitivity is useless for me
Also I am currently using the 2nd generation pen and iPad Pro 2M. And they are perfect for drawing, so this new pen may only be for those who will take notes in class, apart from that, it is also difficult to charge and I think it is useless.
As a digital artist, a pen without pressure sensitivity is useful for me.
I can use it as a 2nd pencil to produce solid uniform lines without having to work up the UI to switch brushes. And if it can be programmed in apps as a 2nd pencil and assign brushes to it? Even better. However, the lack of hover is a letdown.
I think they made it because although artists use the iPad most of the people that use iPad arnt artists. Their business people that use it for taking notes and people for consuming media. That's probably why they don't make the iPad an itch glass screen. They would have to invest too much and only the artists with benefit from it.
My main problem with it is they seem to have used the opportunity to raise the prices of the 1st and 2nd gen pencils.
Since the war in Ukraine they started to rise the price every new product they released here in Sweden.
I think this is one of the first times I don't fully agree with Adam. I do think having the different "tiers" of hardware, for lack of a better word, is a good idea. Most apple products are pretty crazy expensive in general so having less expensive versions for people who don't need the fanciness is nice. However, the magnetic charging I cannot lose. Having to plug the pencil into the ipad was such a stupid thing I feel and it always made it feel like I was going to break it. It's not charging while in storage case. Having the keyboard that also charges it all makes it so much easier because I can plug in the keyboard and use that with the iPad and it will still charge the pencil without it having to stick out the side of the ipad. I also can't really justify the cost of a mac computer compared to windows computers. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see much, if any difference between a high end scepter monitor and an apple monitor. What ever difference there is, to me, is not worth the double price tag. same with mac computers in general. They are not worth the price over a pc. I get just as good if not better performace from my 1200 HP than i do from my mac I use for work which is a 2400 laptop.
I hear you - but Apple stripped the pen down to the bare essentials to help keep the cost as low as possible - for people on limited budgets
This also allows them to beef up the “pro” version and charge a bit more
As a music producer, I completely agree with you because I understand that the needs of artists differ from those of the typical customer, and I'm delighted Apple stays connected to artists and listens to what we need from the tools they create.
If it was chargeable like the 2nd gen pen this would make more sense. That's not a pro vs. casual use difference, it's just a great quality of life upgrade many people don't want to miss. I know people who get Air or Pro just because of the magnetic wireless charging of the pen, who are not artists and just need it for notetaking.
I don’t know but by doing the magnetic charging they would kill the possibility to use on the iPad 10. I believe it’s this and kinda supports it
Fair enough. I still feel like this doesn’t negate the apple pencil usb-c is a confusing product in the lineup that people need to understand isn’t intended for artists. I was hoping they’d release the Apple Pencil 3 before this stripped version. But I’m definitely excited about what’s coming!
As someone who's getting my own iPad soon, this move by Apple just frustrates me.
Everything you say MAY be true to some degree but there is something that not even Apple is "PRO" at in all of this. Communication.
Their communication as to their products have always been awful except when Jobs was there. Jobs knew how to talk to people. Now it feels like they are bringing out a bunch of stuff, throwing it to the public and seeing what sticks. Would've also helped if they made it more distinguishable from Apple pencil 2. I just see a lot of people getting confused in the future. I'm in the same boat as Brad Colbow on this.
I would love to be as optimistic as you about the future of Apple products, but I just don't agree that the evidence is as clear as you say.
Thanks Adam for always bringing a different perspective. It's always needed.
@luckoly1461 i did try and i have a pen display. I much prefer the ipad. The pencil is more to what i like and it will really help with my day job.
No pressure sensitivity? Seriously? What's the point? People may as well use their finger!
For writing
Honey, that thing have no pen preasure, useless for actual artists.
Exactly
Always well articulated and informational.
I get what you’re saying. But I will say this..I lost my Apple Pencil and I bought a knock off from Amazon. ($30) It doesn’t have pressure sensitivity but I was honestly able to use it to draw/paint. I happened to find my Apple Pencil (thank god) but I kept the knock off just in case…BUT! there is really no difference between the knock off and the new Apple Pencil. The knock off actually uses usb-c and I actually just tried to use the hover feature with my M2 pro and the knock off and it works lol.
Gosh I wish there were physical buttons on the Apple Pencil just like a stylus, I use them all the time when using a cintiq and miss them a lot on the a.pencil
HAAAAATEEEEE the double tap as well. But I simply disabled it. Such a pain the petootie.
Same here - thankfully my pen grip covers it anyways :)
I've been following your channel and learning a lot from your experiences and perspectives that you bring, thank you!
It would be amazing if you could do reviews of other products to help artists at the beginning of their careers make good product decisions too, as you have a lot of experience you will definitely see things that even artists can't see yet.
I use graphite b2 to b8
I don’t understand the confusion around the USB-C Pencil. It’s ultimately replacing the Lightening Pencil, not the Apple Pencil 2. Aside from the Magic Mouse, Apple doesn’t make just one configuration of any product.
Notetakers, yes, but -- ARTISTS: This usb chargeable $79 pen wihout pressure sensitivity, why buy?
ESPECIALLY NOT if there's no absolute certainty of an ULTRA pen for an ULTRA iPad? And the pens should be included. Unknown into year 20xx?
Apple, already!!! It wasn't your foresight that spurred that major uptick in sales of iPads. It was an overlap with software: PROCREATE by Savage Intetactivr, AFFINITY series by Serif, and major dissatifaction when Adobe licensing and subscription pricing angered quite a few photographers.
Dear Apple, it was the software that convinced me and other artists to buy our $$$ first or 2nd iPad. Initialky It was color and lower prices that made the Commodore Amiga my preferred choice over Apple's black and white.
And in 2023, chaos in the world plus chaotic product rollouts?
Thank you for talking about this product. You made some really great points that were things I have also been pondering on when it comes to digital art tools. I spent too much time in the past listening to people that said tools didn't matter (for digital painting, for ergonomics, for the ease and comfort when drawing and so forth). I experiment on my own now with different set ups and buy things that make it easier on me physically to make digital art because I have intense back pain from working in the medical field. I use to draw on a Cintiq before I injured my back and realized that if I wanted to continue making art, I had to physically understand my limits. I rely on small screen tablets now and can draw without pain by laying down with supportive foam pillows. I appreciate you being here to share your thoughts, advice, and experiences.
The double tap is something I use more than the physical button on the cintiq 😅. I guess it’s a different experience for some people yet i’d still be down for physical buttons maybe a touch sensitive slider to adjust the size opacity etc.
Yes! I would love an Apple Pencil with a touch slider for the size of the brush ❤
Probably they will add "action buttons" to everything from now... Maybe force touch haptics instead of a physical button, to keep it minimalistic
Hello so which one should I buy the first genaration ?
Thanks!
this is why I love your channel you see the views of an artist, and the views of a tech lover! All the tech channels only see one perspective lol
great video and couldn't agree more! Your earlier video about the Apple Studio Display completely nailed it. They've been been doing this across every product line - can't wait to see what the M3 pro lineup will offer artists :)
Are we the same person? Your M2 iPad Pro take was spot on and so is this. And so are the wishes you have at the end of the video.
Side note, man, those new Cintiq Pro’s are underwhelming to me after using an iPad Pro 12.9”. Contrast ratio is so underrated. Maybe the only other thing on my wishlist is 120hz Sidecar support over Thunderbolt. One can dream!
After getting into digital art a year ago with an ipad I'm ready to upgrade to a 16inch display. Honestly apple doesn't miss but I can't afford or wait for them to make an actual display. Like my 10inch ipad air was 300$ more than the 16inch huion im about to get. I can only imagine how much 16inch ipad/tablet would cost.
You may think that 16 inch is an upgrade but I promise you , you’re going to miss how portable the iPad is. I have a display tablet and I rarely ever use it. Though, you may prefer your display tablet over your iPad. Everyone is different but I definitely love my iPad
@@qualittyarts it's not like I'm throwing it in the garbage lol ill still have it, I want CSP to make better quality art and I'm not paying subscription for it. I want to make manga and its terrible doing it on ipad (already tried) Might as well get a 16inch. Plus I mainly use my iPad in my small room at a desk or another chair that's next to my desk.
@@qualittyarts I just watched one of your videos and you were on CPS the whole time making some fire art and then finished it on ipad from what it looked like, come on dude you know its a good move lol 😂
@@JerryLecor you know, for some reason I thought you were getting rid of your ipad. You never said that huh 😂 lol my main tablet is my iPad. Im learning how to use my 20 inch display. It is really fun though so yea, go for it 😭
@@qualittyarts it's all good lol, I prefer to take a sketchbook around for mobility. Ngl digital art pressures me to try and make something nice everytime i use it. Anyway nice art man keep it up 👍
Enjoying these reviews Adam thank you! Getting a better idea of what I’m going to buy very soon.
Question when using your iPad while having it on your lap or at a cafe for example, are you using your Apple keyboard for your shortcuts as well or no?
I totally agree with you that it’s a good thing that Apple separated the computer from the display, since I use my display much longer. Still I wish it would have a higher refresh rate, I’m so accustomed to 120hz display (ironically thanks to Apple to a certain degree)
I hope you get a position as conselour for art tech at Apple, everything you said is spot on for artists.
10 mins into this 13 min video to find out why this “new” Apple Pencil matters for artists only for it to not be about this product but an assumption on a future product that’s being made.
It’s not exactly a conspiracy theory, pretty obvious where they’re going
For normal users its good, but its also a shame that it do not charges magnetically (maybe for iPad 10 users to buy it?)
this sounds like a really interesting move from apple 😊
Hello Adam, do you have a guess about the announcement date of the improved apple pencil for professional artists?
Hopefully this coming year - I predict early to mid 2024
What is that skeleton that you're sitting beside? Do you know where we could get one of those you know for anatomy study purposes?
Adam, I know that it's a good thing what Apple do with this iteration of new Apple Pencil but it is for me, at the very least, should be priced, at least 20$ less. Definitely something for me to really be sad as they still charge a premium for a product that should've been bit more cheaper.
I believe that pressure sensitivity isn't really important too much for most but mannnnnn, Apple always charge more for a basic stuff and that just irk me....
i'm convinced
I think if they did rotation and no pressure, I would prefer that. Pressure set to stroke speed works to simulate pressure sensitivity well enough. And sometimes I just turn it off all together and set a 10% value for blending.
Can someone tell me why they don't have options for the color of the pen? I'm staring at my art while I'm working, why would I want my pen to pure bright white to be in front of it the whole time? Why isn't there a black or charcoal option?
Is this pen compatible with older versions such as ipad pro 2020 version or is it just the new M2 2022 model?
Should be compatible with all iPads
iPad 10th through iPad Pros, plus iPad mini 6th.
Thanks for this.
Pretty happy w my Samsung Tab S7+ and Infinite Painter. Samsung released a new "creator" pen that might be good...
I want to like the new Apple Pencil tho...
I would like buttons, but I dont think a dumbed down version needed to exist prior to one like that coming out.
It’s convenient for non-artists with limited incomes that don’t need pressure sensitivity - it’s a thoughtful and smart move
@AdamDuffArt sure, for non artists. But isn't this video about being excited from an artists perspective? Not to mention there's plenty of cheap third party options that do non pressure sensitive just fine
THANK YOU!!! I've been feeling the same way, even made a post on reddit about it awhile back. Can't wait for the Ipad Pro to be a cintiq with an apple pencil pro
2 buttons on a normal apple pencil (labeled as 3 or pro), then an apple pencil pro or ultra with 3 buttons and grip options with a stationary desk style charger ( or no charging needed if they can get that to work?)
the studio pro pen display might be what the 17" I pad pro rumors are 🤔
After tax it's still shy of $100, then you might as well get the superior Pencil 2... for something so inferior it's just not worth it. There's no good reason to get rid of the magnet charging, that solved so many problems (that's more insulting than anything.) If I'm a student I'm much better off buying a $10 eBay universal stylus.
Hi Adam
When are you doing a review on Elden Ring Official Art Books?
lol - already recorded it so stay tuned :)
Great,looking forward
It would make sence that they are developing a studio-pen-display now that Procreate have announced they are in RnD on bringing their programs to desktop😇 May 7th 🤞🤞🤞
12:37 Now THAT is something I 1000% wouldn’t afford rn, but is definitely motivating enough to start working towards right now. It would be amazing.
Can’t believe there’s a chance they’re actually gonna reveal something like this on May 7th
I just want a new Apple Pencil that has an eraser
Just gonna stick to my separate tablet and monitor setup. For the cost of even a shitty apple tablet and pen you can get a superior home setup and still have money left over.
I am always surprised/annoyed by people that is so eager to hate Appel that disregard features that are so important for other users. Pointing to “mistakes” that Apple does but are actually on purpose (a feature, not a bug).
Yeah I am for one interested in the M2 iPad Pro and only reason not taking a cheaper M1 iPad is the hover feature.
The audio quality is poor for some reason at least for me it is
So optimistic of you to think that the "apple studio PEN display" won't cost "thousands and thousands of dollars"...
We’ll have to see about that!
I like most of these videos but this one just don't agree with at all. Most of the vid felt like filler talking about other Apple products and almost 2/3 of the way through did we finally touch on the topic of the title. The biggest issue I have is that all of this is just hypothesizing about what they _might_ be doing in the future without anything concrete to really back it up. Apple _could_ do a Pen Display sure. But everything about Apple's history seems to indicate that making a touch capable pen display for their Desktop products would require a serious rework on the entire OS to make them touch accessible. Without touch capabilities I could maybe see it happening sure, with the Pen essentially acting as a mouse cursor like the Cintq's, but I don't see one happening without the other. And I don't think they want to do that anyways. I'd love to be wrong however.
If anything their refusal to port MacOS to the iPad Pro and instead continue to add on and further develop iPadOS into a a fluid touch prioritized device signals that they want to segregate their lines of mobile touch friendly devices and their desktop class hardware. With Apple it's not about whether they could or not. They clearly can, the iPad Pros literally have the same processors and RAM that the Macbooks and Mac Mini's use. It's that porting over those capabilities to either device cannibalizes sales of the other. Otherwise why would anybody buy an Macbook if their iPad can do everything it can do but with touch capabilities? Segregating the capabilities of the product line is at the end of the day extremely profitable for Apple. Macs with native touch and pen capabilities eats into the iPad sales and vice versa. I also don't see them making it an affordable option next to the Cintiq line. If anything it'd be significantly more expensive.
On a side note, I still don't think the Studio display is worth it. It's a great screen, don't get me wrong. But it adds too much unnecessary fluff like the dedicated mobile processor and integrated webcam, while also stripping away physical buttons, making the power cable non removable and forcing you to choose between a vesa mount or the stand. The generous Gen 4 usb ports on it are nice but not a single other type of port is available which is also a negative. It's also not a monitor for anybody who works on Windows or uses 3D software so if you decide to move over to Windows at any point then you're likely gonna have to part with the monitor as well.
This does actually make a lot of sense. Let's just hope they don't put the button where we put our grips 🙃Would be cool if they added a bit of texture to the part where you hold it.
7:00 Wait... so you couldn't see your cursor nor could you adjust your brush size in place? Man, I've been spoiled by PC/non screen tablets and Krita. I just hold the shift key then drag the pen either left or right to resize the brush. If anything it seems Apple and various popular art software is still way behind what some have been doing for years now.
Thats literally just an apple hardware thing. Every program has hover krita does zero things better than any other existing program. Not to mention it's not even available for ipad
You could only see your cursor size once you pressed down on the screen,
Meaning you couldn’t adjust it accurately prior to leaving a brush stroke - very annoying
Even if I weren't an artist I would still justify the extra $30 for 2nd gen Pencil if it'll grant me wireless charging and pressure sensitivity. From my perspective, this product is giving iPhone 12 mini vibes, although I hope I'm proven wrong and customers actually buy this Pencil in the long run.
On those closing thoughts: An iPad/Pencil combo that resembles pen displays would be pretty cool. The portability with an iPad is already awesome, and paired with the functionality of a Cintiq... man
Let me guess, pro artist that has a lot of money to spend, defending overpriced apple products that yes are good... but everyone else agrees that they're overpriced af. Content like this is why Apply doesn't give 2 shits on product sales, because they know people like you will drool and buy almost anything apple related. Meh.
Adam, you seriously need to make a video about how COPPA is affecting content creators and artists. Like how can we be able to express ourselves while being able to survive RUclips's COPPA policies? I am starting to feel that COPPA and RUclips are taking things way to far.
This is 100% Accurate. Zbrush coming to iPad in 2024 is also evidence that new iPad and new pencil is on the way. Your videos always make me think, which I love. I was honestly going to put up a snarky response that Apple just knows that AI will do the drawing so who needs a pencil... but I would like your vision better. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing says Posh garbage like "Apple Pencil"
off topic but are there any chances that you're going bring back stuff like the demons series?
Glad I'm not the only one that wants a touchscreen/pen display : apple studio display
Since the release of the Microsoft Studio I’ve wanted to see what Apple would do with a similar product. An Apple pen display must exist somewhere in the labs in Cupertino but given that the Pro Stand is $1,000 and it only has height, tilt, rotation adjustments, I’d be afraid to see the price of an Ultra Stand for a pen display.
You can get everything and more that the cut-down pencil and the monitor do for under half the price from third parties. That said, if your time is so valuable that doing research costs you more than the thousand dollars you waste by going with Apple - keep doing what you’re doing.
Remember the first one 😂
Ilias! I was thinking about you - you’re coming over for brunch!
i want an ipad with an etched glass screen. i want high friction and low parallax
This is for KIDS AND THE iPADS WHO KEEP DROPPING THESE THINGS. (Bc my kid destroyed one of my good ones.) Brad (forget his handle atm) but his review / explanation is PERFECTION for the digital divide.
I don't have any Apple product and at this point, I don't see any reason why I should invest in their products to make art. I can't trust them, if we don't have the certainty of getting levels on future Pencil models. I envy your hope, but I can't waste my money on something that might or might not happen. If I really have to spend money on a tablet to make art I'll just get a Galaxy Tab 9 Ultra instead, with a cheaper stylus that doesn't even need charging. And I can use it on multiple devices too.
It is over priced though
Apple usually holds the highest standard in tech, but here they're competing with Wacom, the savants of artist tech
This is unrelated to the topic but please go back to reviewing art books. I recently bought the Elden Ring official art books and I would love to hear your thought on it, either that or Sekiro would be awesome.
Video already recorded so expect it ver soon :)
Note that I had to do a full setup update to accommodate book reviews again (video on that coming soon as well)
@@AdamDuffArt my man! I’ll be waiting patiently
The pencil design is still very bad in general. Having physical buttons on the stylus beats tapping and double tapping and whatever all day long.
It is funny, I have been saying all those people that constantly complain about how texture screen protectors like paper like and all that wear down the pencil tips always seem to not be artists, cause artists tend to have la lighter touch, it just seems strange to me that people buy this 120 dollar peripheral just to take notes... what weird flex. now at least there is a pen for them.
Almost all my mutuals who draw primarily on ipad complain about it. It's personal what kind of pressure you apply and how you draw
You convinced me
Just follow Feng zhu advice pen and paper specially when you are learning. Don’t follow this youtuber artist like ergo josh and adam who makes you believe you need those top of the line tools. They are become hyper capitalist ( all about hype)
Best move :)
Guys I was just about to buy an iPad Pro with a pencil… I’m confused now, should I wait ?
I would not wait. The Apple Pencil 2 will receive an update at some point but there are no credible rumors out there right now and the rumors that were swirling the USB-C Pencil were mostly incorrect. You’d be better off using an Apple Pencil now than waiting six months, a year, or two years.
The best tool is the one that you use. There are tens of thousands of artists making great work with the 1st and 2nd gen pencils. You are not going to create sub par work because you buy now rather than waiting for possible extra feature which are mainly for added convenience.
@@kgeo753 Yep okay thank you, appreciate the advice- I’m just gonna buy it
@@thisnthat42 yeah true, I’m just scared as soon as I buy a new one will come out
lol no, apple pencil usb-c is a joke
I don't support Apple
This was just a big what-if lol... I don't mind hearing about it and it gets me excited but I hate the clickbaity feel to it especially when there's a big possibility that there won't be a new pencil for artists or of the calibre you're describing ._.
wish HUION had no-button battery-less thin pencil🥲
