  • KLM, Avianca, Qantas, Aeroflot, Finnair and Delta have one thing in common. They are very very old. Most of them are over a century old. Yes, a century. But there is also an airline from the heart of Europe which is over a 100 years as well. But compared to the previously mentioned airlines they are currently very very small. They operate only a few planes. Few people outside of the country know about the airline although the capital is one of the most visited places in Europe. This airline is CSA Czech Airlines. With a hub in the beautiful Prague.
But why do they operate only a few aircraft and how was their way behind the iron curtain and after the downfall of the soviet union? What led to the financial troubles?

It’s maybe sad but they’ll come back next year with 4 A220s.
And because smartwings bought them, iam sure that they can restructure Czech airlines with a very low cost structure (Prague city air was founded by the founders of smartwings).
I think when you look at other airlines in the region it’s the best to buy/ lease small efficient aircraft (like air Baltic and LOT) to be flexible and in case of more demand to just offer more connections a day/ week that it’s more appealing for business travelers.
And to offer only paid meals in economy like air Baltic and the Lufthansa group airlines (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss and Brussels airlines and probably soon also ITA)
I also think that in general Eastern European cities are a bit underrated compared to western cities like London or Paris. So there is potential to market Prague more. For example to pay that Prague is the film location in romantic (western) movies. Would definitely suit as good as Paris.
For me, as a German, prague definitely was one of the best places to travel besides Lisbon.
