No Control was recorded in Hollywood in June 1989. I believe I saw the first Bad Religion show loaded with No Control songs at The Spirit Club in San Diego June 11 1989. Bad Religion wanted to play the songs at a show before making the record and they didn't want the show in LA. I saw Bad Religion play at Iguana's in Tijuana many times between 1990 and 1992.
That is so cool man, I am jealous! First time (non-festival) I saw Bad Religion was probably not until around 2001/2002, probably the reason for my soft spot for No Substance.

I had to smile when you guys talked about 52 seconds. I had the same conversation with a friend and we also found it odd that the song isn't 52 seconds long. But if you are particular about it, the song lasts 52 seconds if you leave out the "intro".
The cover model from No Substance is actually not Kristen Johnston from 3rd Rock. Apparently, in 2017, she came out on Twitter and clarified that. Her post has since been deleted though.
My first experience with BR was the All Ages comp in a Tower Records listening station in 1995 so I'm always going to gravitate towards those early Epitaph records, especially No Control and Against the Grain. When Suffer came out nothing else sounded like that record, the influence of those albums are huge and I don't think we would have had the 90's skate punk explosion if not for those records. John I am with you on Gray Race, it's my favorite of the Atlantic Records years and I feel like I have to revisit Empire.
Yeah I think I may have been a bit harsh on the older stuff. I do think all the albums are great, but I definitely tend to prefer the later stuff (Empire / New Maps) But Empire is just absolutely incredible, the production is great too, it just packs such a punch.
Just discovered BR this year so coming from a perspective that is not affected by personal life experiences. Top three albums: New Maps of Hell The Process of Belief The Empire Strikes First Also, although I thought it was a bit too poppy at first, thinks The Dissent of Man is really good. True North also up there.
My S tier are Stranger Than Fiction, Empire and True North. A tier: Suffer, Dissent, Age of Unreason. B tier: No Control, Against the Grain, Recipe, New America, New Maps of Hell. C tier: How could Hell, Gray Race, Process D tier: Into the Unknown, Generator, No Substance

Into the Unknown is fun for what it is, and they've played a couple of songs off it (like The Dichotomy) live in recent years. It's kind of cool in a quirky way. My top tier would be Process of Belief, Against the Grain and No Control, but I really love Recipe for Hate and Suffer of course. I think the Gray Race is super underrated and that The New America is not nearly as bad as people say. No Substance is meh but has a few bangers. Stranger than Fiction is cool. I find the output after Process of Belief decent but less remarkable. Age of Unreason is my least favourite but it's more because of the production than the songs. I -HATE- how the drums sound on that record, and it's not Jamie's fault, it's the producer's.
Do biohazard and also downsett. And maybe do Kottonmouth kings. There mostly a rap group But there Done some punk rock. Can anyone explain to me why Graffin sounds 10 years older on Suffer than he does on No Control? Also I'm curious as to why they took such a huge step back on recording quality... Suffer sounds pretty damn good while No Control sounds very brittle and lifeless.
This is a good point, the production on those late 80s/early 90s BR albums is so hit or miss, in the BR book "Do What You Want" there is actually a good amount of time spent on Brett's learning the recording process and a lot of what went in to those recordings, highly recommend reading that if you're interested. Thanks for watching!

@@PunkRockRadar Agreed they're my favourite band. Can't choose between suffer and no control for my number 5 spot. 7th is probably Empire 8th is Stranger than Fiction 9th New Maps from Hell. Then I struggle to choose a number 10 because Grey Race and Age of unreason are such bangers XD.
