      Man in a battlefield I would use sincerely the nodachi. Because I it is big ,precise (as a katana), and it has a wide cutting area (as a naginata)...and I like it because I could feel bigger with it showing some respect...regardless of the risk of being shot from a Yuri or from a teppo .😎

    Great video as always Adam! Love the Sengoku Jidai period weapons, as i've watched a great deal of movies, or played games involved with the history at the time. Shogun 2, Total War has a surprising amount of historically accurate information. I personally like the Kodachi (Short Sword) for maneuverability, and Naginata and Yari are great tools as they were easiest to mass produce and train a conscript (Ashigaru) force. The stick is the most universal tool, putting a point or blade on the end merely increases it's effectiveness.
    Jakub is such a knowledgeable speaker.
    My only suggestion would be to edit in text for the Romanji spellings of the Japanese words (With short definition) as the Close Captioned get confused.
    Great lesson Jakub Shi-Sho! (師匠)
    Look forward to the next one as always Adam 👍

    Many of the yumi (bow) that is used in training and demonstrating today are classed as "Ceremonial Yumi". They are typically 30-50 draw weight only. War Yumi used in the battlefield, had 2 more layers of wood in its construction, boosting draw weight to 150. This is the biggest misconception that Samurai bows were weak. In history, they were the most devastating weapon on the battlefield until the gun.

    • @roadfox808
      @roadfox808 4 года назад +1

      Yes. Yumi (japanese bow) arrows are heavier, so shorter range than a long bow, but more destructive power.
      further The O-yoroi (12th centurys japanese Armor) is 30kg of heavy armor. The samurai of that era were wearing it and shooting Yumi while riding. The samurai of the Kamakura period were heavy armored bow cavalry.

    Just an fyi he's not drawing the bow correctly. He's supposed to draw from the top down.
    Also not sure where he got that katana was for kimono and tachi was for armor... That is not correct. Tachi was the predecessor to the katana. It was longer because samurai were predominantly mounted warriors... Things started to evolve after the Mongol invasion and many samurai became infantry preferring the stouter and better made katana and nodachi. And the katana Wakizashi combo was a daisho
    That battle where the takeda horsemen were killed was also because Oda nobunaga came up with the idea of volley fire. Which was actually not a tactic used until that battle... Little awesome tidbit

    • @wildhaunter
      @wildhaunter 4 года назад

      Katanas being known as a kimono weapon was due to katanas being used as self defense weapons and sidearms largely, which is why there is often many antique katana since most weren't used in battle at all but for status symbols.

      @@wildhaunter that's fine. I'm sure there were some not brought into battle. But katanas absolutely were brought into battle... He made it seem as if the tachi was for battle and the katana for outside battle... Katanas replaced the tachi. The tachi weren't as good

    • @tn1881
      @tn1881 4 года назад

      @@miguelsuarez-solis5027 Katana is a general term for a Japanese-style single-edged sword.
      tachi is written as thick and katana. The blade is thick and long. This can also be used by cavalry. The tachi has a wide blade near the tip and becomes thinner toward the tip, so the center of gravity is at your fingertips and you can handle it with one hand. This katana was developed around the 9th century.
      Uchigatana is developed after the 12th century. uchigatana is written as strike and katana. Uchigatana is a katana made mainly for infantry warfare. The blade is warped at the tip to enhance the effect of slashing. The thickness of the blade is almost uniform up to the tip. Since these are used for different purposes, tachi was used even after uchigatana was created. The explanation that tachi is not uchigatana holds. However, the explanation that tachi is not katana does not hold.
      It is not accurate information that uchigatana was created under the influence of Mongolia.
      Japan was exporting katana to the Song Dynasty.
      Song politician Ou-yang Xiu (1007-1072) announced a poem called Japanese Katana Song. The content of the poem praises katana and Japanese technology.
      Since katana was used in actual battles and showed superiority, it was also exported to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. There are many records of actual battles, so I will introduce some of them.
      The martial arts book "Jixiao Xinshu" written by the Ming Dynasty general Qi Jiguang
      "Samurai moves quickly and katana (tachi) is long.
      It is difficult to approach with my soldier's sword, it is too late with a spear, and if you encounter it you will be cut off and killed.
      This is because their weapons are sharp and use a powerful and heavy katana that can swing with both hands. "
      He obtains and studies Japanese martial arts books. Based on this, we devise martial arts using Dandao and Miao Dao.
      Martial arts book "Dandaofa Xuan" written by Ming Dynasty martial artist Cheng Zhongyou
      "Japanese sword art is mysterious. No one can predict it, so even if you use polearm, you lose to katana (tachi) every time."
      “Katana is easy to handle, and each one makes sense, even to the point where the handle, sheath, etc. are sewn.
      "Cantonese New Language/Language" written by Ming Dynasty poet Qu Da-jun
      "A samurai moves like the wind. Even a large number of soldiers can't resist. A samurai protects with a long Katana and a stab with a short Katana. A samurai never retreats. A samurai responds to any number of opponents."
      Mr. Lee’s tactical book “Muyedobotongji”
      "Ming Dynasty scholars say that Japanese swords are so strong and sharp that they can't be matched with Chinese swords."

      @@tn1881 are you sure the untranslated word is katana and not tachi? Everything Ive read shows katanas developed in the 1300s before that the Japanese used the tachi... You even have tachi in parentheses in the translation
      I ask because I know many translations accidentally translate tachi which basically means sword to katana

    Allow me to add some minor corrections. Samurai armour didn't weigh 40-45 kg, it weighed about 20-25 kg.
    About the battle of Nagashino - Nobunaga had brought 3000 matchlocks but he couldn't really use all of them because of heavy rain prior to the battle. During the battle itself, there were only about 500 Oda gunners. They still played a role, but the battle was won mainly because of the extensive palisade and stake defense Nobunaga had prepared combined with long spears - that's what stopped the Takeda cavalry.
    Also, before the yari, the Japanese had the hoko which too was a kind of spear. And yari became prominent before the Sengoku period, during the Nanbokucho period.
    Other than that, great video! (^-^)

      I believe that the Takeda would lose at Nagashino even if Nobunaga had brought no guns, cavalry charging a fortified structure is really stupid. IIRC the Takeda clan had just lost their leader and his idiot of a son took over and issued a stupid order but I might be misremembering.

    No throwing weapon ?
    My weapon for the battlefield would be Naginata and Tanto, Naginata because it is a spear and more practice for swing than thrust and Tanto because Tanto are generally strong and thick blade like some bushcraft knife, so it can be use as a tool, like cutting a small tree to make a woodstick for the naginata if it broke . And a bow .

LOL! Thank you very much for your video! The academic in me loves the detailed explanation of each piece! Please keep up the awesome efforts!
