Audra,
Just a tip I picked up a long time ago...cover your scanner with a cloth to block out all light. That should eliminate the dark edges. Hope it works for you!
Also try scanning your image in at 600 dpi.
Some artists even go as high as 1200 dpi.
Your artwork is beautiful!
Hope this helps.
@@PSBeKindToday that’s an amazing tip, it made a drastic difference
Finally! I've promised this video over a year ago! I hope this helps some people out, this is just how I'VE learnt to make prints. I didn't mention this but basically if you want great quality prints you will want acid free archival paper. I know there are so many different ways to go about it and so many different options so I wanted to also discuss a couple of those options. This process was all about trial, error and upgrading. As I began making more money I've been able to upgrade. I started off using just the cheaper Staples paper but now I use them just for post card prints and may even be switching off of them entirely. There may be some paper you like better than others or maybe you'd prefer to have a print shop do it all for you. It all depends on where you are at and what you need.
Thank you for this video!!
Very useful awesome video 💕
And what if the paper format is bigger than scanner? :D
Hello I need some help I try the Epson watercolor paper 13x19 whit the canon pron100 and I can’t print 13x19 it always comes unfinished I selected the A3+ option on image garden but don’t know if I should use other option I try the simple A3 but same thing it doesn’t finish the print
Audra Auclair Hi,what computer and edeting programme/Photoshop do you use?😄😍
If u had a subscription box of art stuff, I'd mos def order, no hesitations.
You're the sweetest! Damn I love sub boxes.
Monica Montano Amen to that!!
Honestly, the best thing I've learned from your video was make templates for your print sizes BEFORE you start working. Gosh. That will save me so much time, I have no idea why I've been doing it individually per print!!! Gah!!!
hi there. have you figured out how to make templates for print for Photoshop? HELP!
Me toooo! I need help with it
I don't print my own work (I use 3rd parties) but I do process my own images similar to how you do. I just wanted to add for people who have a nice dSLR, you don't need a scanner. Obviously this is another skill set, but if you already have a nice camera and don't have a scanner, you can still make prints :)
Thanks for the video Audra! Can I ask how much the upkeep on printer inks cost? I can't imagine getting to a point where printing my own art would be cheaper than ordering it from dedicated labs.
what camera would you recommend?
What third parties do you use, out of curiosity? I'm wanting to get into selling prints, but without the hassle of doing it myself.
@@yeetpea5302 Highly recommend DeviantArt
Cannon Scanners only cost at $65
For the part where you fill in the bg with white after using the magic wand (I think). Rather than straight up filling it with white, you might want to put a white layer under it. Then use a mask on the painted layer. That way if something doesn't get picked up by the selection tool, you can easily add it back in. Or same deal if you want to try to take something out. Also I'm not 100% sure if it will work since it is on the edge of the image, but for the darker edges there is a heal brush (I think it is called that, it looks like a bandaid) that might help with it. What it does is it picks up patterns from the area around what you've selected to try to erase blemishes within the area. For example if I drew a dot on my hand with marker, then used the brush on it, PS would generate what it would guess should be there (my skin) based on the surounding pixels. That should also work for getting rid of pencil marks on the bg or like paint splatters or any minor blemishes there too.
Anyways I love your work, so if this helps save you some time even a little that would make me pretty happy XD
A mask would definitely be better wouldn't it? I really need to get the hang of using masks but I just never did. I need to teach myself. Thank you for your input! I'm going to put this on my "to do" list of stuff to learn.
I wonder what did you do when you first began your art career, do you began with selling prints, making your own blog ( if so what kind of things did you post in it ), or other things ? and if you have some tips for gaining followers in social media ? thank you...
These are the real questions! I always wanna know the same things, too. "Who were you when you started out" and "What things have you done that you feel moved your presence forward" are things I wish I knew from every artist =_=
Little Fox I agree, I am definitely interested in this story. :D
Little Fox I think she started with deviant art! You can always watch her video "my art from 7 years old and now" where she talks about how she started etc!
Ziwa Oh ! really , but still I wonder how does she starts selling her artwork and gaining views (audience in social media as a place to promote or any other things)
Audra please answer this D:
I love your videos not just because I think you're a really great human and artist, but your voice is just so dang calming
To make the the white whiter, you can use the levels. It's pretty easy to use. You can also use select colour instead of using the magic wand tool to select the white and make it brighter. It's a lot better at keeping the finer details and you can even edit the amount of white it selects.
I don't make/sell my own art but liking for the kawaii schoolgirl....thank you.
There's more if you google "kawaii ojisan".
THIS was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo helpful! I dont really do alot of traditional artworks but this really does make me need to get my own printer to print my own stuff, in the end its just better quality.
Your work space is literally my dream space
Thank you so much for making this video. I am looking into starting my own art business, selling prints and originals. However because I'm only 15 I don't know much about the essentials. This has really helped me understand how people make prints as I had now idea where to start. Xxx
твоё творчество волшебно! Спасибо за то, что ты делаешь
Thanks for this video. Most artist's don't go as in depth with the printing and editing process as you did, so I really appreciate it! Just got my Beau Monde print in the mail. ;)
I love you art so much, and your voice is so calming!
Lol I did a double take when I saw this in my subscriptions box. This was super helpful and really informative thank you! :3
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video
its giving me direction i never even thought about!!
Thanks for this video! It's nice to see how other artists print their own stuff.
I LOVE the paper cutter that you have! I've been using a rinky dink one that I got at my local hobby store, and it's not the best quality. The bar at the top that's supposed to be at a 90 degree angle to the blade is JUST off, so I can't use it to help me line up my cuts and it also doesn't have a little bar to help hold the paper down as it cuts. I'm definitely going to start shopping around for a new cutter now!
Yay! You're welcome!
I had similar problems with my old one. It was OKAY but sometimes it'd be a bitt off. I think I paid about $100 for this one so it was an investment but a good one in my opinion.
what is the name of the paper cutter? and where you got it from? thanks!
This is crazy helpful! I didn't even think about the possibility of getting a printer and scanner separately (mine are all-in-one types)... I know a great local print place in town I can go to, so I may save up for a bigger scanner. I guess it's scary to put prints up in my shop, too? I don't know where to start, there. I think I'm just scared no one would buy them, and I'd spend a lot of time formatting files for different print sizes and creating listings on my storenvy for no one to see/want them. I'd love to know how it was for you when you first started selling original art prints online.
Do you or could you do a tutorial on how you create your templates for your prints?
I was looking at the layers when she drags the picture to the template. She has the background layer 1, layer 2 she places the image, layer 3 she names borders. so I understand that she measured the borders, did it white and left transparency in the middle to place the picture at the middle layer.
OMG! Do you actually play Overwatch? Because your D. Va background is awesome!
Yep! It's kinda intense seeing D.Va's intense face when starting up the computer buuut I kinda love it anyways.
Thank you SO much Audra for doing this video. This is literally the most helpful thing.
I'm still at the saving / trying to sell and save stage. But will definitely refer back to this for all your tips.
And thanks for cute Kawaii girl. much appreciated.
Do you buy the Canon PGI72 ink from their site/in stores? Have you ever used generic inks in your printer that are compatible? I have the same printer, and ink is soooo expensive. It frustrates me because when test prints don't turn out as planned, I get a lot of anxiety since it costs so much. I have been contemplating purchasing generic cartridges, but I figured I would ask you what you think first. You're way more experienced with this. Thanks so much for making this video! It was very helpful. The schoolgirl was hilarious! Haha! Hope you're doing well, Audra.
Hi there! I'm new to Photoshop and I'm having the hardest time figuring out how to set up a print template as you have done for your prints. I have googled everything and lol I cannot figure it out. Any tips? BTW love your tutorials:)
It’s really sweet that you do the conversions! Thank you!
Also, I haven’t seen it if it exists, but can you do a tattoo tour??
I'm setting up a new Etsy shop. Thanks for the helpful information.
Thank you for the printer recommendation! I've been wanting to start printing myself and it's great to have another artist's input :)
Not too worried about the price of most of this EXCEPT how much does the ink you use cost? With the amount you print I would assume it's crazy expensive. Near me a single regular printer cartridge is 20-50$
chewycat12 if you live near a staples you can send them to print and it saves you on ink and paper costs, I think it costs like 20 cents a page or less. I think my ink cartridges for black and colour last for about 100 pages.
chewycat12 did she ever say what ink she uses ?
If you click a link to the printer, you'll see what kind of ink it uses and the cost. But you can get her printer and scanner use on eBay for way cheaper and buy empty ink cartridges and get it refilled at Costo, if you're a member, for like 8 bucks.
Cheaper to go into a shop and get them to do them, I work in a printers, regular customers get a good discount and there is always good deals on prints.
@@Mo_Nilla_Co wow!! really good to know about costco!
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU!! I recently decided I want to make prints to sell, but it has been Hell figuring it out!! I bought the matte photo paper from Staples awhile back, but my family scanner/printer combo is pretty shitty, so even though the paper was good, the prints came out dotty or overinked. I may invest in a scanner, and do what you did to save for a printer later on. Again, I'm SO happy you did this, it's given me more hope and ideas for finally making some decent (and sellable) prints!
Loved this Video, it will help me a lot! But could you also explain or make a video about how and where you started selling your prints?
It is very interesting:)
Ahh, templates! Such a good idea! Don't know why I haven't implemented that before... Love your videos like this (I love all your videos, what am I saying!), they're so informative. Also good to now know that I'm going through similar processes - feels like I'm doing something right! :D
Thanks Audra for this very well done video about making prints. I feel many artists don't go into much detail about that and really appreciate your generosity.
One thing that definetely I need to say a big thank you, is for showing with detail how to work on the picture. 👌 I still have some questions but it is because I work with oils on canvas fabric, you can find 200 videos about how make the print or to take the picture of it, but never what fixes to make and how. I still have no idea if the quantity of texture showing in my image is ok or if I should gaussian blur it for example..😖
+Audra Auclair hi Audra can you use this scanner (the one you have) for any size of artwork/larger sizes? if yes, would it just be a case of scanning larger pieces in parts and then stitching together in photoshop or something?
thank you xx
Love your art!
i want to start doing printing for my artwork but i don't know how to start.. this video help me a lot.. thanks for the video! support you 😄
Thank you so much for always uploading so much quality content on your channel. I have been following you for a long time now. LOVE your behind the scenes, how-to- videos! this one especially was very helpful. I am thinking of opening up an art store too, but things are so hard to do from here in New Zealand. Shipping costs are ridiculous and it's hard to buy any packaging material for a decent price :(
I really admire your creativity and your honesty in all your videos. Thank you so very much for taking time out of your days to create content for us followers- Im sure you really want to just focus on your art!
I was just wondering, do you still package and send your prints the same way as you showed in your packaging prints video you've uploaded ages ago? I hear so many horror stories about prints being damages during delivery, I was wondering if you have had any problems, or have changed your packaging system. Thank you so much for your time for reading this! xoxox
my scanner sucks ... my camera sucks..., my paintings sucks (╥_╥)
i thought only mine did! lol
What a negative comment😂
fernandogaki OMG YOUR PAINTINGS ARE BEAUTIFUL
this was so helpful, thank you! subbed with bell on :)
I appreciate art and use them to bring positive vibes to my living space. I have TVs mounted on the wall, so I created a channel to upload arts and I cast them on my tv as an art display. Family and friends really love them!
This is soo helpful! Thank you Auclair.
Did you have any problems with your printer ?
Back then I had a Canon printer+scanner and it sucked so bad, I printed a couple sheets with small pictures for work and didn't use it for a month or so and it broke. What a cool story.
I want to make my own prints, but I'm afraid that the same thing might happen
thanks for the info. I've been making a lot of art and never really sold anything. I really do wanna start making prints and selling soon. Again Thank you! Subscribed. :D
Damn, I needed that laugh at the end. That is a very kawaii schoolgirl.
I've been having my eye on that printer for forever and ONE DAY I WILL HAVE ONE. -SHAKES FIST-
Ugh the fact that this has one single dislike is really annoying me
Very helpful,thanks a lot!!!
for my birthday (back in october), my family was WAY too kind and gave me too much money, and i ended up buying a printer to start selling art prints. (i went with the Epson Artisan 1430 Wireless Color Wide-Format Inkjet Printer) i've been really swamped with schoolwork but i'm gonna definitely get on it once i'm done with my degree. :o) it's just been sitting in its box, next to my desk, judging me haha. you, jacqueline de leon and kr sexton have definitely been super super helpful in talking about art prints!
Thanks for sharing!😀
Thank you for the very informative video. It helps a lot. 💕💕💕
Wonderful video. Can you please answer a question about the Canon Pixma Pro 100? I am interested in buying to sell my art prints, but it's difficult for me to find information about the payoff of the ink to number of prints ratio. The inks initially cost $100 and then I believe you refill them. I believe the printer is a good price for the quality, but do the inks make the price worth it? Thank you
Thank you for the Kawaii school girl.
Why not use the selection tool to grab about 1/4- 1/2 inch around the image and drop it into a new document with a 100 percent white background? on the colored ones grab a large pixel area 50x50 or 100x100 average... with the dropper tool of the color you want to have and open a new document with that as the back ground color and then again, grab the image with the selection tool about 1/4 -1/2" around the entire drawing and drop it into the new document. This way you are guaranteed a complete uniform background.
that seems much more affordable in the long run, i printed 3 A3 pictures and 16 A4 pictures in a photograph-store-place (idk what they're called) and it cost about 100$ which i guess is average but i cringed when i heard the price lol
This is so helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your way! ^^
What was the screenprinting shop you mentioned? I took it at camosun and would love to get back into it again! Also, where did you get the plastic covers? I've been looking everywhere! Haha sorry about all the questions!
Im so happy you'll have a video about stores >w<
I always feel lost when it comes to taxes and all.
I don't even know how to find the information \:
Question: my daughter wants to print her digital art, I got a cannon pixma printer and some 260 GSM white linen paper to print on but I'm having trouble picking what paper option to choose while printing. What printing settings do you use?
Does anyone have a video on how to make the 5x7 template or any size templates? I can't find any updated videos for photoshop that show how to do this in the current version. Thank you.
2 months later- still waiting
Which Photoshop do you use? I googled on Apple Store and they have the abode one. I'm really inexperienced and need immediate help. Can you help? Thanks in advance. X
Tiff is a good file. Jpeg ok. Tiff s are good 👍 for line drawings. I am making a Zine for my work. I am a visual artist too./ Lenny...... good information.
If you're looking for a good paper place redriverpaper.com has really good quality stuff! They can be pricy sometimes but I think they're well worth it. They also have some cool sample pack things people can try out too.
I'm new to all of this and I don't think I'm ready to sell yet but I wanted to draw something for a friend that would be as decent as when I do end up selling, I was wondering what paper is best to use when I actually draw? not for scanning as I think I will just give him the original or if I do end up scanning does the quality of the original paper matter? (knowing it will be grey scale for now as I don't have color options apart from soon having colored pencils and possibly markers)
Wth??? Clear bags is cheap! They are from Ontario and their bags are super cheap. That doesn't look like the site I use...
What brand guillotine is it? Also you said you had 2 before and I wonder what brands you ditched so I could avoid buying it too. Haha! Thanks in advance!
When you edit your prints on PS, did you save it in CMYK or RBG mode for printing :o?
So yeah she's not explaining nothing. The first picture she scanned did she scan it to Dent take the copy and hand-painted or did she just scan it so she could completely painted in Photoshop she doesn't say that that's what I want to know. The video started good but yeah unfortunately the information I was hoping for its not here
Can someone please explain why she saved the print as tif???and what's the difference between saving it as tif and like maybe pdf of jpg??
hey there my name is nicholai and im trying to draw character like you i love your style of setting up your drawings i guess the skeleton part of it my question actually is... when you draw your characters do you keep the eye line lower like 1/4 towards the bottom or do you keep it straight in the middle splitting the circle in two, because i am trying to draw male characters and ive seen your video on how to draw faces with that chick you drew and you drew the eye line 1/4 near the bottom then the nose line was the bottom of the circle ive tried many other methods of how to draw semi realistic faces from cartoon then real dose it matter where the eye line is supposed to be 1/4 lower or straight in the middle of the circle i know where the hair line is just the eye line and the nose line gets me confused some say go by the book of the real thing by keeping the eye line in the center and then there are those who say have it 1/4 near the bottom of the circle im struggling and getting really frustrated with my work its not how i want it to be still trying to find my style any tips? my faces are looking like the traditional face drawing of like queens and kings i hate that style thats not what i want and one more thing, im trying to draw different jaw lines from different genders and different angles i need help could you make a video on how to correctly draw faces would help alot of people sorry this is so long take care.
this was super helpful, thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for sharing the video! very helpful! :)
This was super helpful!
Is that D.Va? Are you an Overwatch fan? :)
Yes aaand yes. n_n
OMG I was looking for this comment / about to comment this !!!!!
I thought no gamer girls watch this channel for a sec
No way. We are everywhere. haha.
that D.va wallpaper tho :0 Luvin' it
I can't find a nice place to buy papper :/ i d like a matte papper, which one do you use and where do you get it? thank you!
Hi Audra! Thanks a lot for your video. Can you please tell me where I can get that paper?
wow im so jealous of your art setup... lol my art station is pretty nice but i share it with my sister for her stuff as well as my brother- he keeps his weightlifiting stuff in the middle of the room. thank you so much for this video! i do have a question about your art though... how do you fight off artist's block? I draw a lot but I dont do a lot of creative original pieces...
Okay this question has nothing to do with the video but I really like the tattoos on your hands and I was wondering how bad it hurt to get the one on the back of your hand? I want to get an eye on the back of mine but I'm worried it will hurt alot
Does anyone know the current paper cutter she's using? She didn't list it in the description box.
Thank you very much this was insightful.
What’s the name of the paper cutter that you use now ? You gave the name of the one you used before not the current one. It would be great help if you could tell
Where did you get the guillotine? I've been searching for one but am having a hard time finding one.
very helpful video . Thank you for making it
Thanks you for the video, it really helped us!
How did you make the template for the prints?? I'm having a lot of issues getting my margins to be perfect between CSP and my printer. Any help is greatly appreciated.
me too! Kind of new to Photoshop
Hello...great tips video. My question is what type of soft ware do you use to edit the scanned image. I see it - it is Photoshop cc. How much is that software cost? I am an artist and need all of these equipment to start selling my arts but wanted to know how much is my start up cost. Thank you so much. Your reply is much appreciated.
You can get the student package, check out Adobes site, I got the student one, I got illustrator also, depends what you want, I am doing Graphic Design so I needed illustrator also, if you're stuck you should check out GIMP its free and also Sumo Paint I have used them before, in college, not bad for touch ups!
I have a scanner but I go to kinkos to scan sometimes and they scan for free...
Great vid Audra. What are your thoughts on scanner/printer combos? I'm really intrigued what that new Epson printer that has those bottled inks as opposed to cartridges but cost mucho $$. Also, loving cute kawaii schoolgirl. Extremely envious of all the beauty / feelsbad. ;)
What paper do you use? Asking for a friend
Thanks, it’s useful 💚🍀
People keep asking me what can i do with the Small and medium size prints since the large can be used to decorate walls but not the other two. I always have very short list of answers, *can any one help me make my list bigger? If you bought these prints how would you use them?*
Thank you soo much for this video.
Do you have a template tutorial? Or a download to yours?
bless u for this video, super useful and encouraging~
Nice printer... probably exactly what I am looking for... I am just starting out with my watercolour paintings trying to set up a good printer for selling prints of them on Etsy.
idk if anyone commented this already, but if you wanna make the edges lighter you do that by feathering it.
Instead of painting over in a low opacity, you can use the select tool. Before you select, there should a box at the top/side (depending on your version of PS) that says "1px". Start with 10-20px, select, copy and paste.
The copy of your image will have feathered edges that remedy the harsh shadow/line.
Hope that helps!
Omg, your tattoos are so cool looking. ;w; I'm not even a tattoo fan, but wow.
20 minutes??!?? *stays and watches anyways* -3-
Hi love ❤️ this video. I had a question for you. I do digital Illustrations with my tablet and want to make prints of my artwork. I usually draw on a 8x10 canvas but with a resolution of 600 ppi so that I can make bigger prints from the original. I read somewhere that ppl do this. My question for you is that if someone purchased my 8x10 print which is at 600 ppi would I be able to get that printed somewhere as I heard that 300 ppi should be the print resolution and that 600 ppi is too high to get printed ??? But I would really like to work at 600 ppi so that I can have for example a 11x14 print. As you cannot size up art in photoshop. Please help I'm really confused! I don't use a scanner all my work is digital Illustrations. Thanks so much hope you can help.
You use a Canon Pro 100 pixma? XD I use that at work for my typeset/print job, and I hate it! And I KNOW it should be a good printer...We've tried calibrating it, we tried calibrating our monitors, messing with settings... but there are some colors it refuses to print... 50% BLACK comes out like a dark slate blue. Yellows looks more greeny... and my goodness if you try to print HOT PINK you get like a slightly purpley pink :(
Anyways, thanks for this video. I'll be making my own prints soon for an art show and have been researching paper, clear bags, standard size prints, etc. Luckily, I already had a 13x19" printer and scanner in one... Now I Just need to learn how to cut a straight line with a ruler... or maybe invest in a paper cutter :P
