The Phanteks P500A case is a mid-tower enclosure that's supposed to be priced, at launch, at around $130 for the fully-equipped version. That puts the P500A in direct competition vs. the Cooler Master TD500, Lian Li O11 Dynamic, and Phanteks' own P400A. In this review and benchmark of the Phanteks P500A case, we're testing thermals, noise, and build quality vs. the other best airflow cases on the market. For this one, we don't have any focus on the mini-ITX dual-system aspect other than to reference our previous content on the topic, because Phanteks is using mostly the same hardware and configuration as in the Evolv X (that we reviewed previously).

My first PC build from 2008-ish had a huge 200mm fan in the side, and a 120mm in the front near the bottom. There were a couple of dials in the front to control the fan speed. It was great. My new rig has the tempered glass side (CoolerMaster H500) and it's pretty...but I would still be down with a 200mm fan pointing at my GPU.

Looks like a winning case, very interesting. Thanks for all the hard work put into each of these videos. Nobody does reviews with such brutal honesty.
As an RV02 owner it is cool to see you still using it as a benchmark standard. I originally got it (2012-ish) for the rotated MB design with the notion that heat rises and all that. Mine runs quieter than stock because i'm using Air Penetrator 181 fans (PWM) with a fan controller. It has been through several MBs. I always look for new cases and some day i will change this one out for something new (maybe keep it for a NAS), but for now it is still my daily driver.

I bought this case because of GN, and I have 0 regrets. One of the best cases I've ever had, way better than some of the $200+ cases I've purchased. It's also got some of the best/easiest cable management and gives lots of room up top. The number 1 thing I hated about my Cougar Panzer Evo RGB is that yes it's a sexy case, but it literally offers no room up top for radiators unless you want to mount your fans outside of the radiator.

Hi Steve! I love your work and you make some the most inclusive reviews on the platform. I'm proud to be a patreon backer! Just a bit of constrictive criticism. Before I say this, I understand that, I get it, you literally say in your intro "support our long form investigative reporting". You have such great content and want to be so exceptionally clear on things that you tend to repeat a lot of your previous statements. I would love to see more people viewing your content so perhaps a shorter video by keeping the information 1:1 might be helpful. New people might not want to watch a long video but that would still get all of the information you're trying to convey and still be a shorter video. It's more noticeable when delivering more data driven content. You're product reviews don't usually have this repetition.
Love you guys, keep it up!! Just offering my 2 cents :)

The Phanteks P600, which is one step above this, comes with removable covers and sound proofing which allow you to switch between airflow and quiet on the fly (although the airflow is still pretty good with it closed up, as it comes with 3 140mm fans stock (2 in, 1 out) and is roomy enough that no components will ever be starved of air). Apart from that it is very similar to this one, and probably shares almost all components. I have it and it is the best case I've ever used.

Such an awesome case: 3950x overclocked to 5ghz 16 cores + 1080 TI 11gb with board mod and 2 cables from psu in stress testing barely saw 55 degrees C, usual under load is 40 to 50 degrees C!! I put in 2 360 rads with push/pull configuration: 6 120s fans ek vadar rgb 2200rpm on front (3 120s fit snug between case and front panel! even circle cut out for easy cable management ), 120 rear exhaust (couldn't fit tubes with the 140) and 3 top exhausts on 2nd rad. The removable top panel is amazing for installing rads! (2x 360s is a bit of a tight squeeze but very doable! No dremel/drill needed). Things to note: with a top mounted rad it's impossible for a 140 exhaust rad, depending on motherboard and GPU set up you can also have a 120 tho. Also the case doesnt support 300mm pump/res combo's unless top or front mounted. I took a dremel to mine and got some sheet metal for custom bracket to fit it inside the front next to my fans. I didn't want to fan bracket mount it as it would block a lot of the airflow plus make hard tubing a nightmare!

I bought this case on the back of this review, and I love it! I never expected the RGB to look as cool as it does (though the darn case sits below my desk, so I can barely ever see it, lol), but the real star is the airflow. With my Noctua NH-U12A, there's no meaningful difference between temps with the glass side panel on or off. Goes to show that the airflow through the case is pretty much as good it could possibly be.
I also bought a GN 10th Anniversary shirt, and I love it! Feels great to wear.

I was waiting on this case when it was being shown off on press-shows back around November, but then settled with the P600s. It literally does look like... well a nicer p600s since I usually keep the front and top panel-plate off.
      Glad you enjoy the case~

@Swooz So far after a month, with a very sheddy cat, I haven't noticed any meaningful dust buildup inside the case. I read somewhere that cases with high airflow tend not to build up nearly as much dust, because the dust that gets inside just blows right back out before it has a chance to settle on anything.
I do, however, notice fur building up on the perforated front panel, so it's definitely catching a decent amount of that junk before it ever gets inside. It gets illuminated quite well by the RGB fans, so I can see it easily. There's a noticeable amount on the panel every other day or so, and I just wipe it off with my hand to get rid of it.
Oh, and last night I did notice significant buildup on the power supply intake filter, on the bottom of the case. I need to set up a monthly reminder to clean that out.

Great review thank you. Going off of your review this most likely will be my next case as of right now unless you review something even better later on.
As for the front fans I wa sjust on their web site and if you look at their what version of the case you can just make out that the fans are installed behind the front panel as descrided her ein the review & on their black case you can not tell. They most likely really worked the lighting to try to hide this for the case beauty shots for the promo page. Either that or they used 120mm fans in the blacj case for the pictures because they do look slightly smaller than the ones in the case you reviewed here.
When I get this case and since I would never install a rad at the front of the case I would most likely very carefully cut the supports on the case to clear it up slightly so the fan sides are not blocked by a ugly front fan support bracket like they went with.
The proper thing they should have done is not have the RGB on the fans them selves but have RGB rings that attached in front of each fan. I am sure Thermotake would have been more than willing to sell some RGB Rings or they could have some china knockoff made up for the cases...lol

My go-to case is a Phantek with "front" panel connectors on the "Front Panel"! This allows less dust to "settle into the connectors. Wish more case manufaturers would think about this. Also, easier access with desk top placement.

  • @SC-hk6ui

This is without question the best case I have seen since the Deepcool Genome 2.
I think you are very unfair when it comes to the front fans. Due to Bernoulli's principle, the velocity of the air flow would increase if the fans were closer to the mesh, resulting in pressure variations and a reduction in either fan efficiency or motor stress. Where possible, fans should be an inch or two away from mesh. To me, this design looks perfect.
    Your review was EXCELLENT 10/10
I will be getting one of these before they sell out. What an exceptional case design. I bet it is possible to fit numerous graphics cards and to have two systems. A lot of people might consider one to manage bitcoin mining, and there are circumstances where CCTV systems, VHF, home entertainment, and remote storage NAS systems could be added and allowed to run unhindered. It is the best case I ever thought was possible. What a brilliant company.
    WELL DONE :-)

Looking at getting this case and installing a 3080ti in it, so was wondering what GPU you installed in the case and does it have adequate airflow over it to keep it cool. It looks big enough for a 3080ti, but many cases look big enough in the promo materials and in reality are just barely big enough.

Personally, I'd like to see something on the optimal setup for a case with "good enough" thermals where you can't hear the fans at all in a silent room. Any fan noise at all really annoys me unless I have music blasting loud enough to annoy the neighbors.

  • @thomassheldon9658

Great case. There are a million little things that you only notice when you go to put a system together and realize how much easier it is because of them--like the different sized pins on the glass door. They put a lot of thought into this and it shows. Good cable management and lots of places to sneak a cable around--I only wish that there was a larger cutout above the power supply. Perfectly quiet and everything runs cool, but I'm not running a super high powered system: Ryzen 7 7700x CPU, GTX 3060 GPU, DDR5 6600 RAM, ASRock X670E chipset mobo, WD black SSD, and two WD Red Pro 18 TB HDD's.

I have the p400a non-rgb with aftermarket fans to fill all the positions and i love it, but I wish this existed when I did my build, I would have gotten it, and I would have gotten the RGB version because of the extra RGB strips. The hinged door and slightly elevated visual style, and overall quality really sells it. The fact that it's bigger is also a plus for me, not because I need the space, but just because I'm old school and like big things. Also for the extra fans, I got a 4 pack of 120mm fans on newegg, i think corsair, for like 18 bucks or something. pretty quiet and pretty good airflow, you really can't beat that deal for solidly decent quality fans. I took out the stock fan and used all 4 from the pack just for consistency.

I recently bought the Evolv X as i could finally afford it and i love it. But i completely agree with the sliding cable covers, those are actually my only complaint. They aren't really an issue but overly complicated. They could have made something a lot simpler and probably cheaper aswell. I was glad to see the plastic organizer for the screws, already had one from my old Enthoo Primo (the original). Still got the Primo aswell, bought it at release, so it's almost vintage now lmao

You got the pace and the intonation just right. Some of your benchmark videos try and cram too many facts in at the cost of losing clarity. They are hard to keep up with. Especially at 3am. I laughed at the "Four hands and a chin." I would like to see some military grade or business cases which have anti-theft and water/dust resistance features. Maybe not something you would enjoy but I value Kensington Slots, Security Screws and drop tests to RGB.

I built my Ryzen 3800X system back in March of 2020 using the Phanteks Evolve X and I would give it a 90/100, its a really nice case, but I got it for $179.99 and not the usual asking for $199.99, which still makes it the single most expensive case I have ever personally used in my own build (client builds have gone up to $400 cases before).
There are a few things with the Evolve X that I knocked points off for..
    1. the SSD mounts, you had to buy them separately and I am glad I did, because the supplied ones on the wire covers in the back are not going to fit with the really tight clearances that the wires end up making.
    2. Cable slider shrouds, like Steve said, they are really necessary and could be better thought out and cost saving, they actually kind of hinder certain things. They are not useless or bad per-say, they are functional, but there is likely a better and cheaper way to do it that allows for high build quality at the same time.

Cable management plus , rear panel improvement, hard drive cages, tempered glass hinges, minimal blood sacrifices while building, Noise normalised - whoa. I've only just bought my P400A Digital, but found the cable management a hassle particularly with corsair's module PSU cables. At least I will be able to save up for this one well ahead of when it becomes available locally. I can live with the cable covers as I don't mind removing one if needed. Guess I'm going to have a second Phanteks case.

Too many comments to scan through to see if it has been said or not, but I decided to buy this case, and now that I have one, in order to front mount the (3) 140mm fans, you have to trim the lower portion of the front panel. Or, like most of the images on the website for this case, you can use (3) 120mm fans as the manufaturer did to make it look prettier for marketing. I will give them bennefit of the doubt and assume they originally offered the case with (3) 120s, and later decided to bump to the 140s. Assuming the high amount of airflow isnt needed and perhaps not going crazy with overclocking, dropping to the 120s in the front looks much cleaner and the fans easily mount up with plenty of room to go under the front cover. You could also go for a decent 360 AIO with front mount push fan configuration, again, fans on front of case, not inside.
