These Woodpeckers live in large communities and as many as 15 females will lay eggs in a single nest and everyone takes care of the eggs and young. I would sit and watch them line up on a branch to share in the worms that hatch out of the acorns. They dont eat the acorns but the worms that hatch from the acorns. I have a photo of a giant oak tree about 6 foot in diameter that is filled with thousands of acorns. Theyre an amazing bird!

The acorn woodpecker is everywhere around my home. And finding acorns in their territory is never "half the battle", acorns are so numerous that I have to shovel them out of the way. I have several community acorn trees on my property. They require a dead oak tree and they do cover those trees with acorns. My only problem is they always try to drill into the siding or my roof on my home. Another one of my homes in the sierra foothills has significant damage on some of the south-facing trim boards. They are pesky little things at times but I enjoy watching them when I'm napping on my patio under an oak tree.

😂 I watched again and it is funny. Squirrels are smart and clever, they eat acorns and are very vigilant and know that birds don't eat them. They eat worms that get in and in them so I guess I'd say it's fair game on who eats them. Squirrels bury them and eat them later. If they went to eat them then they are hungry and just think the woodpeckers are just putting them in the wood. I don't think they would think of it as stealing food from them in a cruel way. 😊
