Payload payload payload. I’m confounded by why 2500 SUVs STILL have not come back to the market. We need an SUV capable of hauling 6 people comfortably, cargo, and a 30+ foot 7500 pound camper. Someone for the love of god bring back a 3/4 ton XL SUV with a payload of at least 2500+ pounds of payload!
I think they really nailed the new SUVs and I can't wait for the diesels to come out. One minor disappointment is the payload. I think they should've increased the gvwr more payload and towing. I also think they need a HD version that can to 12k or more.
Just picked up one of these Steve. Had to get my dealer in Trail BC to ship it from Alberta since there was nothing in BC with the specs that we wanted. So far it's a beast and solid people hauler for the wife and 3 kids.
Thanks for working the TT into the testing regimen. I really think it gives a better perception of capability of tow vehicles than a flatbed. Good on you guys!
Having had the 2020 GMC 3500HD AT4 for almost 5 months now, I do have at least one "wish", airbags for the rear... When I hookup my 20+5 gooseneck I'm towing 7200lbs right off the bat, then I load my other truck, 2002 GMC 2500HD, an additional 7000lbs and that puts me at 14200 and that squats the truck by about 2", so my wish would be for the automatic A/B system portrayed in this video... Mirrors/cameras...One of things I love about my truck, side view mirrors, extendable for towing, BUT there is a twist, when I'm turning corners while towing, I flick the directional on AND the camera on that side mirror shows me a view straight down the side of my entire rig on the 8" infotainment screen...really handy to see where your rig is in relationship to the corner... I was really surprised at the cost(US), considering that's about(+/-) where my 2020 GMC 3500HD AT4 came in($79,300)...
Dang man"!!! Your on top of your game and know your vehicles, "!! I seen you doing reviews on other shows even before tfl, you have an exciting personality! Especially when your offroading ir in the mud pit. Great job Steven!
Well said ... TFL truck guys have their favorite trucks and they tent not to give a full fair review ... and talk up the truck they like more and talk less or bash the truck or trucks they don’t like
I remember when GM started the first heads up display in the 80s then Cadillac later on and most people said it was silly. Now all the luxury models are adding. Love this Yukon but I’m getting the Tahoe soon.
I like how you use your dad for comments. I liked how your dad made a great comment on the 5.3 v8. I have a 2014 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 and great engine.
Wheelbase is definitely important. General rule I've used is the first 110 inches of wheelbase allows for a 20-foot trailer. For each additional four inches of wheelbase length, you get one foot more in trailer length. The 2021 Yukon has a 134.1-inch wheelbase (about 4 inches longer than in the previous generation, making it a better towing rig overall), which puts us at 26 feet using the formula. Our travel trailer in the video was a little over 30-feet, so we pushed past the formula, but the setup still felt safe. Trailer/vehicle weight plays a big role as well, along with the suspension calibration, and the Yukon handled this load admirably.
@@TruckKing Thanks for the in-depth exploration, it gets overlooked! Please correct me if I am wrong, the standard Yukon tested has 120.9" wheelbase, need the Xl for 134.1". Only a 20' trailer seems unrealistic for such a capable truck.
Great video. The tow rating maybe legal for this AT4 to pull the Bullit travel trailer. The tongue weight however is probably too high for this vehicle means in real life even when your trailer is absolutely empty and you just have gas and a little bit of gear in your AT4 you are already over the small payload this vehicle has. The little payload is unfortunate since you can't even drive legally with 4 adults and luggage not even speaking of pulling a trailer!
I just drove my 2020 Sierra AT4 6.2L home from the dealer. Loving it If I thought I could have gotten a 6.2L AT4 Yukon XL with air bag suspension, I would have waited.
Of note, in the other camera screen there is a split view where the mirror cameras look back down the truck/trailer. That does not time out, you can drive with it like that.
Also as a note: the Ecotec 3 engines have only been around since the 2014 model year, (The multi displacement variant only since 2019) and other than displacement, share nothing with the previous Vortecs. Internally they are given the Lt designation rather than Ls of the Vortecs.
the only problem with HUD is $800 windshield replacements and in Alberta, we use gravel to control the ice/snow in the winter. you WILL break a windshield every year.
my standard suspension sags sooo much with a ~ 7000lb car + enclosed car hauler. need something .. probablt 3/4 ton AT4 again.. that thing was incredibly smooth, quiet and level towing the same trailer.
Great job and review on this 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 Truck King Team. This GM line of full size SUV is incredible ... so as the price but everything is so expensive nowadays.
Great review guys. One thing driving in the real world especially in the western US with lots of mountain passes, the 5.3 feels underpowered. I have a 2018 and light trailer at 4k. Loaded up and with passengers this gets maxed out fast. And does feel underpowered at times. Maybe the 10 speed helps?! And they DO have issues with the AFM - Cylinder deactivation is horrible on the vavle train. So the 5.3 is not bulletproof by any means. Local dealer had 3 in for service on the valves with low miles.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade account for 50% of all large SUV sales in the US. GM makes 340,000 of them every year and exports about 80,000 to 31 countries. They’re made in GM’s plant in Arlington, Texas, which is said to be the most profitable assembly plant in the world. We estimate they generate $20 billion in revenue for GM and about $4 billion in profits. Autoline Daily.
Thanks for the nice reviews. By the way, you compare the Canadian Yukon AT4 XL with the short wheelbase US AT4 model. So the Canadian should little bit less expensive(around $2000 cad). So except for that, a really great job.
great you did a video with a travel trailer. I have a travel trailer and this video helps me learn. It would be nice GMC or Chevy made rear view mirrors that extend out for when it comes to towing.
Thanks for the review. I own the 2021 AT4 WITHOUT the airbag suspension and also didn’t come with the manual brake adjuster. I actually own that exact Trailer too. Can I tow that trailer without a separate brake controller installation? I was told to purchase a trailer brake kit by the RV company. I do have the TOW option but wondering if I need extra brake item I was told to purchase. Thanks for any help
That tablet style infotainment screen is the best I've seen as tablet style goes but having the denali not have it does still make the denali a bit more desirable. Still think if I were getting rid of the stalk that I'd rather have the turn dial. But I haven't messed with those button although has gotten ok review
Does the Yukon have the trailer tow side mirror camera view like the Sierra? When I have a trailer connected to my Sierra I can go the camera button and click the mirror option, and I have pretty decent side mirrors in the display that stays on until I turn it off
There is definitely not a G80 in the z71. I believe it uses the same system, although in TFL's last video with the AT4 they made it sound like the rear end had a different system. They didn't say what that was though...
Awesome review, great to see the new IRS towing something substantial. The Tahoe doesn't use a G80 anymore. It uses a mechanical LSD with clutch packs.

It doesnt matter if the thing will pull the trailer, its what the trailer weighs compared to the tow vehicle. See it all the time, a huge trailer being pulled by a car that is too small or light. Pulling a double axle is why there are 3/4 and 1 ton pickups. They have the weight and wheelbase to pull a big trailer. A Yukon is a big car, not a truck. Also, at 8:27, it sure looks like the safety chains have been twisted up to shorten them. Might as well not bother. A chain CANNOT be twisted up to shorten it when it is secured at both ends. When a straight chain is overloaded, it stretches the link, but doesnt fail. When twisted up to shorten it, the chain tries to straighten itself out when loaded. This puts a rotary motion on the links that will blow the weld apart. If the chain is too long, shorten it, use tie wire or wire ties to shorten it up. Shock cord threaded thru the links works good too.
I am trying to sort out which is more valuable the rear suspension of the AT4, or a duramax diesel. For now the denali that i think can have both is out of my price range. The better ride/more stable (therefore safer) ride have strong advantages. The better fuel mileage and lower maintenance cost of the diesel have measurable value. Any thoughts?
I noted this same thought about. This Yukon had a max tongue weight of 810 lbs (shown on the sticker below the max tow rating he points out in the video). I did the math and at 7600 GVWR of the trailer is too much for the Yukon. Dangerous.
How come this SUV does not come with tow mirrors when you have the tow package...that is really weird IMO. Nice SUV but I am skeptical of long term reliabilty with GM.
My best friend has the 395Hp version of the 5.0L in a 2019 Lairiat. It's barely quicker than my Trail boss. I also had a F150 5.0L 2014L. 360hp. My Trail boss is quicker to 60.

Does all AT4s come with this adjustable suspension?
Why are you not using sway bars?
This is the only air suspension system I know of that matches damping with spring rate??

You tow sometimes. The diesel works every time you drive. Go diesel.
Always wondering how reliable the air suspensions are? Often see ppl post the suspension issue after a few winters.
All airbags will eventually leak. I have 3 older vehicles with air suspension all leak air. No matter what brand they all do it.
Doesn’t the new Suburban and Tahoe come with a mechanical LSD?
There were multiple questions inquiring about fuel economy while towing, but none were answered. Is it that bad, or....
On short test videos like this (less than 75 miles) we don’t measure fuel economy. Would not be a fair average.
How much tongue wait can this Yukon handle and how much does this trailer have?

Highway Traffic Act (in Ontario anyway) says you have to see clear down the side of the trailer.

Now that the Ford 5.0 makes 400 hp and 410 torque that 5.3 needs way more power.
