The most characteristic thing about Marcus' playing was mentioned in a Bass Player Magazine article in... '00 or so. It described how, while grooving or soloing, he "never resorts to 'throw-away' notes". This makes his style stand out from a lot of other bassists - every phrase is well-timed, precise, and often has some sort of thematic development. He's a very well-balanced and organized musician, and I love listening to him play.
'throw-away' notes" -- as a musician, I will always remember this phrase. thanks for sharing buddy lots of musician thinks the more notes you release the better you are which is not true in reality, sometimes, lesser notes is more aesthetic in the ear
you can buy new Marcus Miller signature from sire company as cheap as 400 dolars. Just look into it, it is revolutionarily cost efficent and she sings like a bird.
Love how he goes from a Jaco harmony into a Prince's "When the Doves Cry"! Just amazing how many bassists incorporate Jaco into their style. He changed the way everyone saw and played music on a Bass! I'll never forget my first time hearing Mr. Pastorius!
I'm determined to view all of M2's youtube videos at least 2ice each. Been following this genius since the 70's. His bass playing on Grover's Winelight was incomprehensibly sublime. Then came stuff like "Old San Juan" and "islands in the sky" with spyrogyra. And Grover's "Can U dig it". I could go on forever. This cat is simply amazing. Need i mention "Collaboration" (Klugh/Benson)? Maputo?? Endless list of musical gems.
How can this have so many dislikes? Why watch a Marcus Miller if you don't like him? He's so good it's untrue. Can't get enough. Marcus is a bass legend. (Along with Mark King!)
A superlative art of bass guitar... An invention that never runs dry! A flamboyant technique ! A great tribute to the son of Miles Davis who had composed this song for the birth of his son.
Same here, I was a metal head until I started taking the bass playing more seriously so I started listening to jazz and blues where all the coolest basslines are... with the exception of Steve Harris and Cliff Burton....
MM is such a keen, masterful improviser...so many "real-time" musical ideas...and always seems to be able to translate them to the bass so effortlessly.

Encore BRAVO !!!
It is a very uplifting feeling that there are people like Him. That’s why I can name this song simply: Love? It also means that whoever is huddled in this feeling is obligated to listen. At least once. Or even several times. Always. And when it dies, it is to be reborn. Or for reincarnation. For life at all. Mindig. És mikor elhal, akkor, hogy újjászülessen. Vagy reinkarnációhoz. Egyáltalán az élethez.
Since the days with David Sanborn every time better than before...This solo is light years away from the performances 35 years ago, as it should be. By the way, best sound I have ever heard with that Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass. I own one...haha
Marcus Miller has come a long way since coming on the jazz/funk/fusion scene. He started out like a Stanley Clarke type player but he passes that level with finesse and more style all his own. Marcus Miller has the Marcus Miller sound!
marcus miller was never better than when playing with either miles davis,Larry graham, prince really took him to a level he,s a master no doubt! however miles & prince were the genius that coaxed this creativity, look forward to more of him on baritone or bass oboe, whichever one he,s playing!
Marcus Miller besides being a great player he's a nice educated person . Do not ever say anything negative about him. Re. Just one of the best ever to hit the scene and did he!!!! Scott
My dying wish is a Marcus Miller, Buckethead, Brian “Brain” Mantia, and if Bernie Worrell can’t still bang the keys, Travis Dickerson collaboration, the likes of which the world hasn’t seen since Praxis: Transmutation Mutatis Mutandis. Marcus’ brass section can most definitely join in the jam!
I am inspired by this guy to learn how to play bass. I did not know you could do all that with bass instrument. And the sax guy knows how to blow. Thus, the whole team is awesome.
I started learning the bass about 8 months ago and I'm still a beginner. Haven't learned how to slap yet. I'm working on a Sabbath song because Geezer is one of my favorite bassists along with Geddy Lee and John Paul Jones. would love to learn Marcus' technique if I can.

FACT: the bass guitar and the saxophone The sexiest instruments EVER
Edit. FACT: this is the first video that introduced me to Marcus Miller
But not everyone can understand how sexy they actually are... Those are not "just" instruments
Mensch Meier not really because it scientifically proven that drums are a form of abuse
Black Dog That's the first time I have laughed in 2017! You are a genius haha
apparently you've never experienced the pure seductiveness of the tambourine
Black Dog
That's some thick and juicy facts
The bass when handled by Miller is seriously the most seductive instrument on the planet. I wanna buy my old one back.
...and call Marcus to play it? :D
you can buy new Marcus Miller signature from sire company as cheap as 400 dolars. Just look into it, it is revolutionarily cost efficent and she sings like a bird.
yea, i was like : I wanna play bass now
that Sire bass does not sound like the Fender , ever.
Been listening this for 4 days on repeat... This is uter and pure beauty.
Only issue with this is that it isnt longer. I could listen to them go back and forth on bass and sax all day. So rich and smooth
Love how he goes from a Jaco harmony into a Prince's "When the Doves Cry"! Just amazing how many bassists incorporate Jaco into their style. He changed the way everyone saw and played music on a Bass! I'll never forget my first time hearing Mr. Pastorius!
This is proper talent
these guys have music flowing out of them

He's so good it's untrue. Can't get enough. Marcus is a bass legend. (Along with Mark King!)
Damon UK Mark King is a good call, very under rated.
This video provides 3,418% of the recommended daily allowance of funk.
FUN FACT: You're watching a 52 year old Marcus. Looks like he's in his 30's.
wow.. Didn't see this coming....watching this video for years and never expected he might be more than 40 !
Couldn't help but notice how great the drumming is in this song. Awesome drummer
I wonder why they don‘t mention the other musicians in the video‘s credits.. I recognized Alex Han and could not find his name...
the guy is just a pure genius. seen him twice live, respect my man,
going to see him next month, so excited already!
Sweeeeeeeet ! Marcus inspires me to keep practicing my bass for sure.
Marcus Miller is simply the best
I've got the video with him and Stanley Clarke on my channel.
- How is he able to play the bass like a guitar?- Mindblowing.
Killer Bass tone. nice .
A superlative art of bass guitar... An invention that never runs dry! A flamboyant technique ! A great tribute to the son of Miles Davis who had composed this song for the birth of his son.
BIG...
probably the bass player whith the strongest dexterity, and the bigest humility...
too BIG ...
THANK YOU ^^ !!!
He is surprisingly very down to earth and likeable considering his prodigious talent and amazing connections.
Love his style, great mix of funk and jazz.
I was a Metalhead, but I really like to hear Jazz, so great!!!!!
Chaste Byron this is more funk. You won’t hear usually hear this kinda slap bass in jazz
Same here, I was a metal head until I started taking the bass playing more seriously so I started listening to jazz and blues where all the coolest basslines are... with the exception of Steve Harris and Cliff Burton....
I likee these kinds of battles
A master of his art while incorporating himself Into the other instruments, being a part of the entire experience. a true legend.
I really dont know how people can dislike this piece of art
my source of musical inspiration in bass since the 80's , thanks Marcus
My favorite piece on RUclips for the past 8 years. Coming back every once in a while to remember how to get it done right.
He's the Master! Amazing Basssolo performance!
MUST LISTEN!
The Saxophone players name is Alex Han, just wanted to let you guys know :D
thanks! he was frikin awesome
Totally exceptional musician, bassist, and band. Miller is Outstanding.
MM is such a keen, masterful improviser...so many "real-time" musical ideas...and always seems to be able to translate them to the bass so effortlessly.
These great players have fun and make it look effortless. So much going on up there !
i canNOT get enough of Marcus Miller!

Absolutely amazing !!!
Great stuff... Thank you for posting this
Just outstanding! get ready for me. . . Inspirational
That's what I like, he is at the center of his music, but leaves room for other musicians to express themselves.
It is a very uplifting feeling that there are people like Him. That’s why I can name this song simply: Love? It also means that whoever is huddled in this feeling is obligated to listen. Dat bass tone... And dat sax player too
Just awesome .Miles is smiling.
*Miles smiles
Rest in Purple Prince
Wow! that is just sick! Thanks for posting!!
I wish Marcus had made an album with Prince.
That would be too much. All other music would then seem lame by comparison.
Be nice to be there and feel that bass sound as you watch.... Nothing beats live!!

I am inspired by this guy to learn how to play bass.
I did not know you could do all that with bass instrument. And the sax guy knows how to blow. Thus, the whole team is awesome.
make no sense to quote any minutes. every note counts
0:00 - 8:16 is the best of this clip
True, that one note at 4:00 is really something special to me though. Sticks out from the rest which is already beautiful
That ending was great with the battle with the sax player
Marcus is THE MAN!! Marvelous interpretation.
