  • In this video I demonstrate how with a single button push on a 2-way radio, GPS coordinates can be sent over the air, that are then decoded and displayed on a pc/laptop at a dispatch location. This does not require purchase of the radios' imbedded Tier 1/2 GPS system functions, that are priced far too high for most users, or software, or subscriptions. Making use of these items instead;
    Garmin GPS 16X set to output $GPRMC sentence at 38,400 baud
    Arduino Mega used as baud rate converter, 38,400 in and 1200 out.
    Tigertronics Radio Modem board converting rs232 to fsk tones, and back.
    Spectrum Labs freeware for NMEA sentence decode
    Google Maps to cut and paste GPS coordinates into for map placement
    The GPS, Arduino and Modem board are less than $200 total, for each radio unit.
    See previous video in regards to the Arduino setup.

    I never thought about the copy and paste to google maps. That’s pretty cool.
