In this answer, Tim will cover what spring preload is, why is doesn't change your spring stiffness (a common misconception) and why it's good practice to allow 1/3 of your suspension travel to be set aside for droop to help keep your front and rear inside tyres on the ground where possible.
With all that said, as Tim mentions sometimes the fastest way to get around a corner might simply be on 3 or less wheels, however, there can obviously be compromises to this when it comes to grip and car feel.
