The 30mm cannon is a magnificent weapon system. So much so, the USAF said, let's build an airplane around it! The A-10 was born. Well, Honda said, this air filter is AWESOME! Let's build a motorcycle around it!!! And the 2018 Goldwing was born. LOL

I wasn't looking forward to doing the air filter the first time on my 2004, but with a patient methodical approach it was pretty straightforward. I can do it in less than an hour these days. Instead of making easier on the 2018+ Honda has made it worse. Hats off to you my friend. Pinch a cup cake tray from the kitchen for all the screws, bolts, rivets and fasteners to keep them grouped in order.

I love my 2018 DCT Tour, but the air filter replacement freaks me out. I want to do it myself, because I don't trust the kids at the dealership, but this is truly intimidating. I miss my old CB 750. It had the air box under the seat, held together with four Phillips-head screws. I could change the filter during my lunch break and still have time to eat a sandwich.

Did this same exercise on my DCT Airbag which adds other complexities. One recommendation that works well is to lay out all the Tupperware with the associated hardware in a clockwise pattern around the garage. Being a little anal here can save a lot of aggravation while speeding up reassembly when you reverse the process.

Being a DIY guy myself, I will get to do this very soon. I figure the dealer doesn't have any better way, or maybe not even more experience, so why pay to have it done. Just take your time and be careful as you did. You started out with just the glovebox to remove, so most of the work was done to that point, but good vid. I think while it's apart, looks like a good opportunity, so why not route some needed wires up for accessories. Thanks for the information.

I just bought a '21 DCT Tour. Obviously, I am not looking forward to replacing the air filter @ 16K !! That being said, my '15 BMW r1200RT is not a picnic to work on either. Nearly all modern bikes, that have a lot of plastic body work, are going to be much more difficult to work on. However, it is less of a hassle than the days of my Harley ownership where bolts were vibrating OFF the bike as I rode ! So, at least the Wing retains its fasteners ! Even my '12 650 V-Strom was a pain to work on (due to v-twin being crammed into the frame with very little clearance to access fasteners !). However, I am pretty mechanical, and overall like the experience of working on my bikes. And one last thought: If one does NOT want to do his own maintenance, and one thinks that Honda service is too expensive, then...DO NOT buy a Gold Wing. Stick to something simpler. Or...maybe motorcycles are not your "cup of tea" if you are averse to things mechanical. Also, having the right tools really helps. Make sure you buy yourself a good sent of T-handle hex, torx, and ball-end torx drivers. (I recommend Bondhus USA-made versions). These are extremely helpful in working on nearly any bike. Thanks for the fine video, and sharing !

We don't take off a lot of that bracketry. 1:54 Once the front snorkel is removed the air box lid and filter can slide out the left side from under the airbag/storage box. One tip I can give you if you do it this way, place a small dab of painters tape on each lid screw to hold them up out of the way as you slide the lid back in place. This will help protect the new filter from being snagged by one of the screws hanging down. When removing the lid we don't care if the screws drag on the old filter, right?

I do not remember what my shop estimated the cost to change the air filter on my 2015 F6B, but it was enough that I sold it. This is ridiculous surgery to replace an air filter, along with the cost. I assumed the egg heads at Honda would have designed a way to pull the old cartridge out and install a new one with some type of access panel...aren't the Japanese known for their ingenuity. I will never buy a Honda GL until they get this sorted out, Hate to say it, but my Harley is such a better bike when it comes to access to anything on the bike.

Dealer will set you back 2 to 3 hours labour for this job, it’s absurd. Was hoping Honda would make it easier than the previous generation, but they made it harder instead.

That is truly absurd that a major Car, boat motor, M/C etc etc etc this was the best they had to offer. I personally would have gone with an Indian had I known this BS

Whollyophuck! I do not look forward to this.
I hate R&Replacing that plastic stuff & getting all to re fit correctly and dont completely trust any dealer around here to do much of the regular maintenance.
I always dreaded checking / adjusting valves on my VTX 1800 and that was by far a simpler process than this nightmare.
I thought the stock suspension was the biggest joke on GW's but this.....

This is ridiculous. I currently have a 2015 Goldwing trike. Put 131,000 miles on my previous 2006. I can change the air filter relatively quick. “Relatively”.😂😂 This is just one more reason why I may find a new 2017 somewhere and just put it aside for when I need a new one!!

At least the Honda engineers made it real easy for maintenance. 🤣

This is just as bad as he 2017 models on back.
My BMW K1600GTL or any BMW K-bike is not even close to complicated for changing the air filters.
    Good job!!

wow, my 2016 GW took about 3 hours.......to remove....LOL, i had 1-2 bolt/screws leftover....not sure where they went HAHA. of course, they were replaced later when it got hit. I have a 22 now, not looking forward to doing this. its either $300? by the dealer or whatever 3 hours shop labor is, not that...
I was told that replacing the filter or even installing the foglights is an even worse operation than the previous gen bikes...! know who told me that????the dealer..lol

Letting the dealership do it and some duffus that’s never done it and don’t care about anything more than getting a paycheck. Don’t care how hard it is I’ll do it myself when it comes time.

Believe it or not there are dedicated professionals out there. Ask the HONDA dealer for a "RED" level technician. There are no { "duffus" } doofus REDs

On a 27000 euro bike you have to deassemble the entire bike to change a 40 euro air filter. How dare you Honda. Do you employ anyone that has any amount of brains???
