I've been saying the same thing to my mother since I was a teenager when she used to make me rake the leaves every fall...... if only utube was around back then.

You said it yourself, the mulch looks prettier. What I don't like about the mulch is how the last load I got a few years ago had a bunch of fungus in it that popped up at various times through the summer. I'm pretty sure it was artillery fungus. I was not expecting that.

    Absolutely!
So many are so idealistic about sensory appeal, which can and often is detrimental. Where common sense gets forgotten for appeal.

You should look at growing and using comfrey as fertilizer and more. It kick starts compost, is an excellent natural healer and so much more. You can cut and throw in garden beds as is like leaf cover and naturally decay or you can make compost tea with it and use as liquid fertilizer. One of the best I have encountered.

I will rake my backyard, but then I use them as mulch. The lizards and frogs really like it!

I pile leaves next to the tree line of our yard that used to have Poison Ivy. It seems to help keep it controlled.

    yup!
it's a real shame what people picture as "home ownership". they think it is to sterilize the environment around themselves to this picture perfect 1950's ideal.
i of course understand people who are not able to put in the work of responsibly caring for their property, out sourcing the work. but we really need to get more sustainable practices across the board, circular horticulture, for water, for nutrients, for the ecology in our micro climates, neighborhood, blocks.
we have to drop the bourgeoisie display of wealth in pristine green lawns. displaying the ability to spend money on water, mowing, and allowing land to not be used for "productive" vegetation.
we have to let nature go a little wild sometimes.
i am letting our lawn go wild this season. Up until the the HOA threatens us with fines anyway.....
are their "weeds", oh yeah.. but there are all colors of flowers popping up it is all very nice and i can hope they are giving the bugs some respite.
thank you for the great message.
