How to Grow a Crocus Lawn - Autumn Bulb Growing Tips for Winter Flowers

  • Welcome back to our cottage garden, today I wanted to tell you about our crocus lawn and show you how I planted it. I apologise the videos of the crocuses aren't the best quality - I didn't have my good camera back in Winter! Hopefully you get the idea anyway. These crocus flowers add some beautiful colour to the garden at the start of the year, and if you live somewhere with a cold enough Winter I really recommend growing some.
    I did use a smaller bulb planter to put these bulbs in initially, it makes less mess of the lawn. But I've misplaced it so filmed this with a bigger one that's more suited to tulips and daffodils.

    I got so inspired I planted 500 bulbs, I used an old hoe tool and I got the holes done in 15 minutes, It took longer to plant them and it was a little fiddly but so exciting. I have always had the 'blues' in spring and I really think this will help, I already cant wait to see my lawn.

    I have a tip for planting in new construction clay. Since it's really compact, you'll want a hand shovel with a serrated edge on at least one side. You'll also likely want a gardening fork to open up small holes to fit the shovel into.

    This is lovely and I became so inspired. I am working on a new garden pathway (a wide one) and looking for ideas to jazz it up throughout the seasons. Crocus are a bit fiddly for me in Australia (have to lift and chill), so I will try this idea instead with dwarf iris, which should survive and multiply in my conditions. On the flip side, I can leave my dahlia tubers in the ground!

    • @kmsch986
      @kmsch986 4 месяца назад +1

      Since they come up early and lawns are usually dormant in winter. Let them flower, wait six weeks for sun to charge roots of crocus after flowers die, then mow over. In a lot of climates don’t need to mow until May and these bloom March and April for many climates
