Actually, the last manager to get ejected from a World Series game before Bobby Cox was... Bobby Cox. He was tossed from Game 3 of the 1992 World Series in Toronto for tossing a helmet on the field from the dugout. He’s the only manager to be ejected from two different World Series games.
AlemBeatboxFan123, I respect your honesty. So many Yankee fans would never admit to this call being terrible. It is calls like this that led to replay use in MLB. Replay should have been used in MLB decades ago.
+eckesg2 Jermaine Dye interfered with by the same Welke in Game 4. Terry Tata was the umpire Cox was arguing with, but Welke said something to Bobby and after one comment, tossed Bobby. Welke and Tata were two of the umpires MLB let resign when they attempted their "coup" in 1999 or 2000.
Tim McCarver made me shake my head at the 2:50 mark, saying that the last manager that he can remember being tossed from a World Series game was Whitey Herzog back in 1985. Cox was tossed from Game 3 in 1992 after throwing a helmet on that field, AND McCARVER WAS ANNOUNCING THAT GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you really "shake your head"? That's amazing. He didn't say it as fact, he said the last one he can remember. Clearly you don't know the difference between the two. Go get your brain checked
Bobby Cox is fucking incredible, everyone on all the fucking benches, all they can do is watch as one of the greatest baseball coaches of all time stands up for his troops like a BOSS
No manager had their players' backs like Bobby Cox. And he usually had a legit complaint. I can't count the number of times I've seen Bobby run out on the field and interpose himself between the ump and the player and get tossed.
stephen allen -- we got screwed in that series. I have friends and family in New York and they are long time Yankees fan . And they said the same thing. The fix got put against the braves. It should have been a back to back world Series championship for Atlanta
These are my two favorite teams and the Braves should've won in 1996. They crushed the Yankees in the first two games and clearly had the superior team. As game three started it seemed the Yankees started getting biased calls in all honesty. Both teams were in the midst of dynasties and regardless it was a win win for us who loved both teams.
it amazes me how players have to pay a fine when ejected, but the umpire gets away with the blown call. IMO, if the player/manager was right, the umpire should have to pay the fine.
Once again, The Braves getting screwed as always. I remember watching this World Series. It was the Braves Vs. Yankees and the umpires..WOW, tough Series for us. We lost, no wonder; hard to beat two teams at one time: Team Yankees and Team: Umpires.
Billy Anderson Hey Billy I agree. The Braves were cheated on multiple occasions. I remember when there were two outs and Jeter LITERALLY swung the bat for a 3rd strike but they said he didn't swing. This was the worst call in baseball history. Shortly after that, the Yankees started scoring...
Felix Mendelssohn well yeah thats true but dont forget that the Braves destroyed the yanks in gm 1 by two hrs by andruw jones but the braves shouldve won this ws
cometandcupids What about the call challenges? If Cox were to do a call Challenge to the Umpires and have the MLB Office of Replays look over it, would it make any difference?
Dustin Krueger well in fairness there had been MANY egregiously missed calls in post-season. This was one of the most glaring (though not the most famous--that would be the Jorge Orta play in Game 6 of '85.). There were many reasons replay needed to be instituted.
Henry Hill was a guest on the Howard Stern show a few days before game one. During the interview Stern asked Hill what he thought about the World Series. Henry Hill said, "It's a fix. Yanks in six." Now there's some food for thought...
I clearly remember being 8 years old watching this play and flipping out at my tv, the next brave hitter popped out to left field i believe, but of course that entire pitch sequence and course of events would have been different had they called grissom safe here... Two batters later there was a base hit which would have drove in a run
Imagine if replay were in that year. The Jeffrey Maier homer would have never happened. This wouldn't have happened. Amazing the difference of a year that would have been
Overall, the Braves were clearly the better team in the 90's. They won more games than the Yankees, they won more division titles than the Yankees, & they went to the World Series 5 times too the Yankees 3. Both were great teams that decade, but overall the Braves were way better. Simple but fact.
You go by wins & loss's. The decade of the 90's was clearly owned by the Braves. The Yankees won more championships, but that only means they had a few better years in the 90's. But overall, the Braves were the better team in the 90's based on the win-loss percentage. Or as Hall Of manager Earl Weaver said, you go by wins & loss's. And who can argue the logic of someone who made it to the Hall Of Fame? lol
cometandcupids You're logic shows just how little you know about baseball. A team with a "perfect record?" Regular season means nothing? First, there has never been a team who went undefeated. 2nd, Yes the regular season DOES mean something, because its THOSE games/wins & loss's that'll determine if you go too the playoffs or not. And the Braves WON the Division Championship Series more than the Yankees did in the 90's, & the Braves were in the World Series MORE times than the Yankees were, in the 90's. So for you to say the Yankees were the overall better team in the decade of the 90's is not only downright laughable, but it goes too show you really DO have, NO knowledge of baseball. And I'm not going to argue with you about it. Truth be told, the Braves made MORE playoff appearances in the 90's than the Yankees, the Braves WON their division more times than the Yankees did in the 90's, & they won MORE games than the Yankees did in the 90's. So a few good years by the Yankees in the 90's DOES NOT make them the team of the 90's overall. And for the record, are you a Hall Of Fame manager like Earl Weaver is? No? Didn't think so. And I'll value the opinion of someone who's MORE knowledgeable than you, any day.
cometandcupids And nor will I troll with ya kid. I strongly suggest you do some research on baseball, before opening up that big ass uneducated mouth again, Junior Jackass. And you're replies are now disabled as I will not waste my day talking horse sense to a Jackass.
I see the umpires saying just as much shit as the managers and players. More times than not Bobby Cox was right when he got tossed and once again Cox gets tossed because of a horrible call. You cant blow calls like that in the World Series and not expect people to get pissed about it.
I feel if we had had replay in the 90's, the Yanks don't win those wrings all together... Braves were dominating these guys till the game three fiasco... Oh don't forget the O's getting screwed in 96'.
What was the Game 3 fiasco?? I followed this series pretty closely as a big Braves fan, and there were plenty of fiascoes in that series, especially this one and in Game 4, but I'm not aware of any in Game 3--that one was pretty straightforward.
ADEAL918. I mistakenly said game 3.. I am thinking about another game in the series I forgot which one. It may be the Grissom miscue that gave Girardi a triple? I'm thinking game 6 it's been awhile.
@Sully Sullivan The Orioles didn't dominate the Yankees in the playoffs, after Game 3 they were barely even in the following games, never mind that the blown call happened in Game 1.
I'm a Yankees fan and this no doubt was a dreadful call. However, this call alone is not the reason the Braves lost this series. They had plenty of chances prior to take the Yankees out. Here are three ways they shot themselves in the foot: 3. Jermaine Dye's error in the sixth inning of Game 4 which allowed both Derek Jeter & Bernie Williams to score to make it 6-2 Atlanta, leading to the bullpen implosion. 2. Marquis Grissom's error in Game 5 when Dye blocked his vision on a fly ball from Charlie Hayes. Hayes ended up at second and scored the only run of the game on a double by Cecil Fielder. 1. Failure to capitalize on big opportunities: -Mark Lemke's failed bunt in Game 5 with runners on first and second and nobody out, leading to Chipper Jones grounding into a rally-killing and inning-ending double play. -Javier Lopez's failure to score Chipper in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 5 with less than two outs. He grounded out to third, forcing Jones to stay there. -Terry Pendleton grounding into a rally-killing and inning-ending double play in the fourth inning of Game 6. Atlanta had loaded the bases with one out and had cut the lead to 3-1, but that's the most they would get. -Top of the ninth of Game 6, they had runners at the corners with one out and Luis Polonia struck out against John Wetteland. Had Polonia hit a sac fly, it would've been 3-2 with two outs and Grissom at the plate down by one instead of two. Grissom was red-hot and could've been the runner-up as the MVP had Atlanta won (most likely Smoltz would've been awarded it had Atlanta won).
(Braves fan) - first of all, congrats! Second of all, agreed - as I said in another post here, Game 4 was really the game that killed us in this series. Y'all made a great comeback in that game but we did it to ourselves too. The 6-0 lead speaks for itself - that is not a situation where a team, especially in the World Series, should end up losing that game. Bad call here, yes - but y'all deserved the 1996 World Series.
The umpiring crew for the 1996 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves are: (#3/AL/Jim Evans) (#19/NL/Terry Tata) (#30/AL/Tim Welke) (#27/NL/Steve Rippley) (#28/AL/Larry Young) (#12/NL/Gerry Davis)
You are? I think it sucks royally. I have an idea..lets make up rules designed to speed up play..hey I have another idea. Let's take a look at every single play. Not just home run calls and plays at the plate. Oh and here's another idea for you...lets sissify the game by taking out hard slides and collisions at the plate. You want real baseball?? Watch old games!!
well you're right instant replay is a bit stupid, but it prevents these dumbass calls like that call in the Royals Cardinals 1985 world series game 6 that cost the cardinals a championship
This bogus call, the pick play by the LF ump on Jermaine Dye's attempted catch of Jeter's pop-up, plus Jeter's strikeout no-call....it was a bizarre convergence of questionable calls. But the Braves didn't do themselves any favors with Lemke's sac bunt pop-out in Gm 4, the routine pop-fly off Charlie Hayes's bat that dropped in right center between Grissom and Dye, and Wohlers throwing a hanging slider to Leyritz that tied it. It hurts reliving that series, as a Braves fan.
Fred Ball i agree with you on all of this, except for one thing. The only "no-call" on Jeter I remember was the first pitch of Game 5, which was a ridiculous call but that one didn't make any difference, Smoltz still struck him out that at bat. Was there another one too? Interesting point what you said too--about the Braves not doing themselves any favors. Exactly right, which makes the umpire incidents even more egregious, because no one seems to think of it this way. The Yankees victory is REALLY tainted when even with all of the ways the Braves did indeed screw up, they STILL needed those umpire breaks in order to win this series.
The umpiring crew for the 1996 World Series between the navy blue and gray of the New York Yankees and the navy blue and red of the Atlanta Braves are as follows: (#3/AL/Jim Evans), (#19/NL/Terry Tata), (#30/AL/Tim Welke), (#27/NL/Steve Rippley), (#28/AL/Larry Young), and (#12/NL/Gerry Davis).
Been screaming for years the game needs the challenge…hard to believe the Braves lost 4 straight like that. They definitely should’ve had the 96 World Series in the bag. Damn that still burns to this day!
"Close Call." I just take heart that the team that benefitted from this call is the ONLY team in MLB history to have choked on a 3 games to 0 lead in the MLB playoffs!
Everything went the Yankees way that year, the Jeffrey Maier call, the pop fly that Tim Welke got in Jermaine Dye's way in game 4 which helped spark the Yankees comeback, and ofcourse this. Helped spark a dynasty
I think Cox was just the victim of his own reputation. He always seemed to get rung up by the umpires, but I think that he should not have been kicked out. He was walking toward the dugout and not toward the umpire.
Lord, how I loathe the Yankees. They've received so many gift calls in the past. It's so ridiculous. The 1999 World Series against the Braves they got a gift in game 3 with Boone being called "out" at 3rd.
Next time I get a traffic ticket, I'm not calling my lawyer. I'M CALLING BOBBY COX!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why?
@@jacobrichardson1952What’s so funny?

Joe Kidd what drugs are you on?
That's why Bobby's roster always loved him. Always stood up for his players. Saved lots of them from getting tossed too

Yea but he can't remember 4 years ago a WORLD SERIES game that HE WAS AT!? Pretty ridiculous
Yeah they are idiots
I totally forgot about game 3 when Bobby threw the helmet on the field. Lol
The Umps back in the mid to late 90's were biased.. some were even Fined and Fired for the calls they made.. Thank goodness for Instant replay now
@M soccer blows dogs for free
Bobby Cox is fucking incredible, everyone on all the fucking benches, all they can do is watch as one of the greatest baseball coaches of all time stands up for his troops like a BOSS

Billy Martin to.
Holy shit what a terrible fucking call.
bobby cox is the only manager in history to be ejected from 2 world series games,he was also ejected in game 3 in 1992 against the blue jays
After Atlanta totally embarrassed NY in games 1 & 2...the fix was in. No way in hell could the Yankees beat that braves team 4 straight.

Zombie Slayer -- No I didn't say that. Read what I said again. I said we got screwed in the 1996 World Series.
And they're never accountable when they screw up. Unbelievable.
A terrible call in a series, and a postseason, full of them. The Yanks didn't deserve that championship.

1 word. RIGGED!!!!! The braves should have at least 2 or 3. Brave for life
You were playing the Yankees, Bobby. Nothing more needs to be said.
I use to talk to Bobby after every braves game in 01-02. Great guy and funny always smoking a cigar especially after an ejection
Andrew Jones was 19 yrs old that series hit a debut Home Run
it amazes me how players have to pay a fine when ejected, but the umpire gets away with the blown call. IMO, if the player/manager was right, the umpire should have to pay the fine.

Well this does explain why the Yankees have so many World Series
He said he didn’t remember a WS manager ejection since 87 or whatever, but Bobby was ejected in 92 WS as well.
I'm a Yankees fan but that call was wrong at 1:08 you can see his foot get in there before the tag so he was safe
That would have been overturned today with replay
Not always, replay has messed things up even when it’s clear it was the bad call!
Get you a manager that will fight for you like Bobby Cox. :)
With instant replay today this series would've gone to Game 7
Mccarver doesn't remember Cox getting ejected 4 yrs earlier in a WS game??
We should have won that year....
That would have been overturned today with replay
Why didn't YOU win? YOU should have played better
@TL2354: Atlanta Braves had more hits, runs, homers, less errors and a lower team ERA during the course of the series.
The braves should have won most of those years
Felix Mendelssohn well yeah thats true but dont forget that the Braves destroyed the yanks in gm 1 by two hrs by andruw jones but the braves shouldve won this ws
Geez! Grissom was safe by 20 miles
The 2nd base umpire was Terry Tata. Harry Caray used to spell his last name backwards... Atat. LMAO!

Sadly replay and computerized umpiring has taken away this iconic part of the game
But it's made the game more honest. Umpires were really forced to clean up their act.

(#19/NL/Terry Tata)
(#30/AL/Tim Welke)
(#27/NL/Steve Rippley)
(#28/AL/Larry Young)
(#12/NL/Gerry Davis)

The question is, if instant replay existed back then, would've the Yankees won that series?
No. They'd have lost. But even back then the umpires knew they were making bad calls. The series was fixed.
That's my coach.
Tate was out of position. Happens all the time. Braves wouldn't have been in this spot had they not blown a 6-run lead in game 4.
This moment was so bad, even Yankees fans admit that Grissom was safe. They felt sorry for both Cox and Grissom.
Yankees usually get the calls
Never out never
wow... old school Fox graphics
The catcher who threw the ball to second base is the Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
damn infield fly sorry call at second braves might be screwed who callin the game angel Hernandez (rated the worst by mlb) or cb bucknor
As a die hard Yankee fan I'd say that was a terrible call because Jeter didn't even touch the plate
Braves got screwed in this series.
And to think what instant replay would have done for baseball history...
Is this where they say umps are blind? Because in this case he certainly wasn’t looking at the same call I was looking at. Horrible horrible
Bobby Cox is the man.
Was definitely safe.
love to see him go, but i hate to watch him leave
Safe, and I remember being a kid watching this game and that call pissed me off. Shitty call.
grissom was a solid player , quick ,got on base
INSTANT REPLAY WILL SET THESE BUMS STRAIGHT THIS YEAR
Your title is worse that the call🤬
I think Cox was just the victim of his own reputation. He always seemed to get rung up by the umpires, but I think that he should not have been kicked out. He was walking toward the dugout and not toward the umpire.
Lord, how I loathe the Yankees.
They've received so many gift calls in the past. It's so ridiculous. The 1999 World Series against the Braves they got a gift in game 3 with Boone being called "out" at 3rd.
