You’re being very legit. These guys are clowns, Canada is terrible.
There should be allowances with the cap that take into account tax players play on their salary.
Conversely, all players should be taxed at the rate where the NHL is based as a business. (New York City) I know the players are technically employees of each team, and not the league, but that's an easy fix - have the league be the company, and the teams just be various "departments"

Canada is a wonderful nation…long underestimated and often ignored by the U.S. at large. My parents are Canadian. I used to spend summers in Manitoba. In short, I love Canada. As a 52 year-old American, my outlook is shaped by experience and wisdom. With that said, I wouldn’t want to play in Canada if I were an NHLer in my 20s or 30s…not if I could make more money AND remain familiar with all the nuances of life in the States I grew up with. Life in the two countries IS different. That doesn’t necessarily make one better than the other. They are just different.

It ain't the fan base in Canada that's the problem, simply it's Canada's tax bite. The NBA compensates the Americans playing for the Raptors because of Canada's income tax.
Some states have high taxes too. Like California and new york. Some provinces have lower taxes like Alberta

Trust me, as someone who plays/coaches in Central FL...walking out of that nice cool rink into 115F with 95% humidity gets to you really quick. I preferred living where it snowed...at least the transition was better!

The taxes are huge when competing against a southern team that also has no winter. The ridiculous pandemic response up here has probably scared even more off. NHL playing in empty rinks up here was insane, people need to go to prison for the preposterous lockdowns that took place in Canada.

Don't think for a moment that Canada's response to COVID was worse than the USA. In fact, the entire 'trucker' issue began when the USA insisted that cross border truckers be va X ed. Canadian teams are practically a separate league within the NHL. There are not many advantages to this.

About 90% off the time when a player wants out of a Canadian team their career ends up worse. With the Jets alone I'd argue: Ladd, myers, kane, Dubois, roslovic, Laine, burmistrov, armia, niku, chiarot, copp all worse. Trouba I'd say neutral. Better off maybe tanner glass and thorburn cuz they at least won?

If you just want to be a working hockey player, play in the USA. If you want the opportunity to be a legend, play in Canada. If and when the Leafs win the cup, those guys will be worshipped like gods long after they're dead. The average Las Vegas resident can't name a single player on the reigning Cup champions roster.

Florida Panthers is not a "small market" American team. Miami metro population is over 6 million. Calgary metro is less than 1.5 million...
Markets aren’t judged on population size. Factors such as revenue, TV viewership, fan base size, media attention etc are all considered in. But overall small markets I think you could say are “non-tradition” hockey markets.

The media point is the reason why the NHL will never grow to their potential. All other high level sports league has a lot of scrutiny.
Only the money part you have correct. Comparing Canadian teams and market environments to US is apples to oranges. NFL and NBA players in the US get the same scrutiny as hockey players in Canada.
The sad fact is that most of the decisions on where to play come down to dollah dollah bills. As you point out, higher taxes, currency exchange and bigger off-rink opportunities make it difficult to keep elite players on Canadian teams. As you cited Tchuk and Goudreau, they are perfect examples. Tchuk is American and got a pile of $$$ to go to Fla. And Johnny cashed in, as Calgary struggled with a rebuild and his playoff prospects appeared grim.

"Same level of scrutiny". The Lightning players have admitted - they can walk down the street in Tampa, St. Petersburg (Fla) and they aren't bothered because nobody recognizes them. Sure Crosby and Malkin would draw a crowd in PIttsburgh, but would the average Yinzer know who Joe Pavelski or Barkley Geaudreu are?
Vancouver has good weather most of the year. Playing in Toronto is great. They really will overpay you and you always have a short spring. Head home after the first round is over and play some golf.

You dont mention the benefits of playing in Canada. More fans, more endorsements, a legacy. If you won a cup in a Canadian market you are a legend for the rest of time. Im talking fourth liners and backup goalies. I guarantee the average person in vegas or ft lauderdale doesnt know the names of anyone on their nhl squad.

You know there's a lot of transplants from the midwest, the northeast and Canada in Vegas, right? Hell, in my neighborhood alone there's a couple from Toronto, a guy from Edmonton and another from Calgary.

They had a moment in 2019, made some trades for a cup run. Swept the Lightning in the first round, got bounced in the second round. But no, have never really been a legit threat.

Re. the tax argument - there’s great benefit for players to sign contracts in a tax free state like florida (is only one that I can think of)- over skating for Canadian clubs, sure but playing your home games at MSG may be more costly than for canadian teams - there’s federal taxes, state taxes and New York City Income Tax. Players that live across the river in NJ get to pay that income tax as well - IS THAT FOUR tax returns? Yeesh - that league minimum hardly covers the cost of living!!!
I Wonder about European players - My son did a year in Norway and we were shocked at how much he had to pony up!! those countries have VAT taxes and an extremely high percentage on income and are required to kick in for healthcare too. I wonder what taxes are expected from citizens who work outside the country. whole lot to consider -
A lot of factors to consider yup!
In regards to your last sentence; America is one of the few nations where citizens still have to file an income tax return even if they no longer live there. When I lived in California I wasn't required to file a Canadian income tax return. But my wife, who I met there, still has to file with the IRS even though she hasn't lived there for 20 years now.
And you have to remember. Players play taxes in every market they play in. So while there is no state income tax in Texas....a Stars player will pay California income taxes for the games they play there.
Their accountants are likely very busy people. Four tax returns? Closer to 25 likely. Yeesh! Hahaha. Needless to say, I doubt they do their own returns. Actually I think all of that will be handled by their management teams. Who are also getting between 3-5% of the player contract for services rendered, which go far beyond just negotiating the contract. For instance they will handle a lot of the logistics if a player is traded (housing, schools for the kids...so on and so on.)
It's easy to think "Wow two million dollars a year to play hockey, lucky guy" but the truth is players likely only see half of that money. Not a bad living at all right? I'd take it quite happily. But your average player who may only have a five year career? They may not be as set for life as you think.
That said. It's a nice start to the next stage of your life considering most players are done by their late 20s. I didn't have a few million in the bank when I was 27. Not even sure I had a thousand. Hahaha

Extremely valid point! The NFL is for sure a different beast than the NHL. All we’re saying is the media/ fan pressure in Canada is higher than in the US. Some players can handle it, some don’t wanna deal with it and choose not to.
Well that is tone deaf if you actually listen to PLAYERS. Ryan O'Reilly said if definitely played a major part to signing in Nashville who are playing great hockey. Oh wait there is more just from Toronto as Luke Schenn followed O'Reilly out of Toronto and onto Nashville. Tkachuk and Gaudreau both mentioned to media scrutiny and quality of life outside hockey were both mentioned. Matt Duchene chose Dallas. OEL chose Florida etc etc Just look at the players leaving Canadian teams and signing with American teams, then compare those moves to positions of NEED with current Canadian contenders. Then ask why they didnt sign. It WASNT the money. Now those last three I dont have concrete evidence it was the media as in the PLAYER actually saying it played a part of their decision, but it DOES play a major role in a players decision, to say otherwise is naïve or just ignorant of life.
Bruh Hockey players arent the same as NFL players they just aren't. Also we have actual verifiable accounts from players where their major complaint as to why they don't wanna play in Canada is because they are gonna recognized whenever they go out on the town and not be left alone and the Media is relentless and ruthless. Some Players shine under the pressure and do good others don't want that.
What does the NFL or your feeling towards players have to do with anything? These are reasons (as given by actual players) that they prefer playing in US markets. And as a whole, NFL and NHL players are very different. NHL players are more humble, laid-back people.

The ONLY reason is the lower pay because of taxes and other US citys offer no tax for NHL players so really unfair advantage that should never be allowed!
States in the US don’t offer no tax to NHL players. Some states just have lower income tax and therefore are more appealing.

I think it's more about what the player wants tbh. Do they want to create a legacy with their team (Canadian or not). Or do they want to play hockey, make their money and not be bothered. A lot of players want the latter.

US markets are a lot more dedicated than you might think. The Boston Bruins and the St Louis Blues have some of the most dedicated fans I have seen in the sport. My whole family were crying tears of joy when the Blues won the Cup; it was *that* big of a deal
If I were a NHL player I would never play for a Canadian team. The reason for that is simply taxes.

Canada has 3 cities in the top 10 in quality of life the usa has none. But being wealthy changes things.

Many do. Primarily European or Canadian born players. America isn't for everyone. Lots of Swedish players stay in Canada after their careers are done. Pretty sure life is good anywhere if you have millions in the bank.

Valid! I wouldn’t say Canada is dominating by any means anymore though. Other countries have caught up.
Canada has won 3 of the last 4 Gold medals at the WJC, 2 of the last 3 world championships, dominated the last best on best olympic games, has 43% of nhl players, and by far the most elite nhl players including the best player in the league and the best dman in the league. No one is close.
Last best on best was so long ago tho, 10 years? The gap has closed internationally, I still think Canada is the best. But it’s not like it once was. And who is gonna play in net for Canada in a best vs best tourny??
Arguing Canada’s dominance in hockey sort of proves the videos point. Canada produces the bulk of the best hockey players, but we have to back to over 30 years ago to find a Canadian team with the Stanley Cup. Canada creates the best Hockey players, but why can’t they keep them?
Gary Bettman thanks you for proposing an alternative reason why no Canadian team has won a Cup in 30 years, other than the extremely obvious fact that he’s fixing playoff series so only U.S.-based teams in large markets, or U.S.-based teams with major stars win.

What’s more, US citizens playing in Canada have to pay income tax to BOTH countries. Even further disincentive for Americans to play here.
Not sure that’s how it works exactly, I believe you’d just pay tax based on where your primary residence is. But not 100% sure.
NHL players pay taxes per game. In states with low tax, they get more take home in a game. 82 games a year they get paid, so players in low tax states get 41 games a year they pay lower taxes.
Teams like toronto can bypass this slight disadvantage a bit with huge upfront contracts that give a ton of the money before a season starts

Don't get me wrong I'm sure plenty of them are beautiful but in cities like Los Angeles in cities like Chicago and cities like New York or Tampa it's more frequent.

Duh! A place like Winnipeg has a population of 700,000 and LA has 4 million. Of course it's going to be more frequent. And one's geographical logistical location has no bearing on one's appearance or genetics if you were born in Canada or The United States.. Arizona - I think weather is legit the only positive thing about that franchise, outside of their young talent. A lot of players prefer a warm destination over say a Winnipeg or Edmonton in the winter…
