- Ahoy Fisho's! This week is a squid Masterclass with a good mate of my Gav! After trying our luck chasing tiger squid in the shallows earlier in the day we head deep in search of Arrow squid and Cuttlefish. Needless to say it doesn't take too long before they are coming over the side thick and fast! As well as catching a feed, we also go through some tried and tested squid catching techniques, discuss which jig to use when as well as how to clean your catch! Hope you enjoy the episode!

I can't believe how many squid you caught.
That's crazy!
Top effort Gav, Sam and Kev. 👍
G'day phantom!
Cheers phantom 🍻🍻
I've been going hard on the squidding lately good to see I'm not alone. Good work sammy
Haha I have a renewed passion for it now! So tasty as well!
I love a good squid session. Try some tip run jigs in 15-25m. I’ve been getting some cracking squid out deep. arrows 30-40cm and our best green eye so far is 800grams!
Nice mate sounds like a bit of fun!!
Do as thy wiltvand never come
Try to cook pinoy adobo recipe. From the philipines watching
The squid in the thumbnail are called loglio squid they hunt in schools and I’ve caught 30 of them in a session if you want to catch more use a panernoster rig with a size 2 jig and don’t wind it just drift
Well there you go! Is that the same as an arrow? Will have to give that a try next trip 👍
@@SammyHitzkeFishing yeah similar the arrows live in the deep and have shorter fins and have a skinner body
G’day Sammy, this episode just looks like a hell of a fun time 👌👍 I recently bought a 7”6 squid rod 2000 reel. I think I will be buying some yamashita jigs very soon 🍻🎣
Mate we had a ball! Few beers, plenty of laughs and a stack of squid. Perfect way to spend the arvo 🍻🍻
Nothing better than a productive squidding session.
Bloody oath! Bait and food shopping all done in one go! 👌👌
Hey Sammy forgive me I'm full of envy and suppressed.. I love your videos ,, but I was drunk..forgive me
It doesn’t get better than catching bait and a feed at the same time! Cool vid bro😎🎣
Bloody oath mate! 🙌🙌
Nice haul Sammy. At the start of the video you showed the ground you’re covering, are sight casting from there or just casting??
Just blind casting there mate, at times you can see them but we couldn’t that day.
Good job .. ur friend was busy all the time with his mustache 😁
Great little session of squiding Sammy, your videos are so thorough and informative. I enjoy every eposide you put on the net. Just wondering, over the years of fishing ect, do you notice there is a distinct row of seasonal times for fish, squid and other creatures you target? It is very seasonal here in Hervey Bay qld. I also noticed you downed a few milton mangoes, good to see.
Haha yeah mate a few mangos died in the making of this video 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yeah mate definitely seasonal changes in fish as well as ones that are available year round. Keeps it interesting as i’m always chasing something different 👌
Beautiful stuff..!!
Thanks mate 🙌🙌
What would you recommend for open ocean squidding at night with green lights in the water Sammy? Tried a few times but no luck yet. Last time we had a school of 2-3in little silver fish near the light. Our squid jigs are limited but have a few on the way. Trying to catch some for bait mainly, maybe some calamari also.
Did did you see any squid farting around in the bait? If you didn’t you might need to change spots, can’t catch them if they aren’t there. Also down size your jigs to be similar to the bait that comes up 👌👌
@@SammyHitzkeFishing yeah I think they were around outside the bait in the dark.
Not sure if they were farting…didn’t see any bubbles ;)
Will try smaller jigs and try again, thanks.
Totally could have used a kids rod
it's great to see you again and again SAM--nice day and company !
Cheers Joe! Thanks for tuning in mate 🍻🍻
Wowie what fun! Beautiful day out.
Was a cracking day on all fronts! Gotta love it when it all falls in place 🙌🙌
Nice catch mate hope to see you on the water again 👍
Cheers mate! Yeah likewise! I need to track down some of the Cobia you boys have been catching 🙌🙌
@@SammyHitzkeFishing just follow us out lol we need to follow you out for your fish as well 😂
Hi Sammy your videos make my day👌
Thanks Sandra! Really appreciate it 🙌🙌
Where about is this
im planning on fishing squid when spring comes around and it starts warming up, i recently introduced my brother to calamari and he really liked it, ive also been wanting to cook squid recently so its an up for everyone!
I’ve just watched this clip.. Squid fishing is the best! I have caught them all over but because you asked your mate how big they get I thought I’d pipe in. One day fishing in Swansea channel I caught an arrow squid that weighed 4 pounds. It was enormous! It’s body was the length from the tip of my fingers to my elbow and my wing span is just over 2 meters. I’ve never seen anything like it again. Needless to say. Something ill never forget. And on an outgoing current on bream gear the first run was mind bending and the fight took a very long time. I even at one point considered chasing it.
Anyway keep up the good work. You’ve just kept me sain through being locked down with covid.
Now I can’t wait to wet a line.
Hey Sammy I have a question for you about SPJ. Have you ever used an Accurate Valiant 500n spj or any of the Accurate slow pitch reels?
A lot of fun, chaps. Never thought of fishing or eging to be so absorbing pastimes. Keep on shooting your lovely sea fishing videos.thanks very much indeed.
Didn't have a squid rod at Swains with us so dropped a jig on the end of the 80lb leader line and picked up 6 big tigers in 20 minutes
Do u use a hero 9
Have you ever kept them alive and used them for bait? Here in California we use lights at night and get the entire school to float beside the boat and then fill the bait tank. It's hard work but lots of fun dropping them in the morning and catching big yellowtail and white sea bass.
Just wondering in Qld do you use them for bait as we do down sth.
Sometimes mate! Hard to not eat them yourself though!! 🤤🤤
Mate you earnt me like when ya cracked that tinny of xxxx open
🍻🍻
Gav wants to b careful he doesn’t suffer from ‘under ball u.v induction ‘ wearing shorts like those. No ‘commando’ that day, or else.
🤣🤣🤣 I’ll pass that on to him!
You’ve got good bag limits up in QLD. In Vic it’s a combined limit of 10 squid/cuttlefish pp per day. I’m happy to say that finally you are catching small stuff compared to the squid we catch in Vic. Your arrows are babies 🤣🤣🤣
Hahah yeah there were some small ones ther but I reckon I can turn them into some bigger fish 😉
Isn't the Tiger squid a Calamari squid Sammy? We're allowed 10 per person per day in Vic.
I think they are different mate 👍
Hi Sammy, I found your chan via your Alvey rig tutorials - good work mate- cool style, natural honest and astute delivery - thanks mate.
Oh awesome mate! Welcome to the family,
Glad your enjoying the videos 🙌🙌
Great Video. I wish you would have shown how they register on the GPS/Finder. Keep the videos coming.
Hey mate, we don’t use the fish finder to locate them. More just look for the broken bottom and start casting 👍
Why not put some soft plastic taste gel on your jigs, I just thought about so will try it myself next time out. Another great post. Cheers.
We do mate! Little bit of scent helps a lot 👌👌
Super Egi master.
i tell ya what, it'd be sick if you could get a polarized lens for the camera. the amount of times you describe things below the water we cant see is huge.
Unfortunately you can’t put a polarizing filter on the GoPro hero8’s which is what I use and the cases I use to allow the microphones to fit in do allow for an external one either 😩
Fresh squid tastes 100x better than the supermarket 'fresh' squid.
Couldn’t agree more! 🙌🍻
Love you work all we have in Melbourne is armchair fishing due to lockdown
Hope it’s all over for you guys soon and you can get back out there! 🍻🍻
🦑dont u think it would be better if u put them on ice instead of a hot deck? F-in YUCK slimy hot squid!🦑
What type of boat is that
It’s a AMM 5.5m Centre console 👍
How stunning were the conditions. Particularly early on.
Unreal hey!
He's obviously seen your netting job on Shaunos Murry cod
🤣🤣🤣 zero trust in me hahah
Just ordered two shirts one for me and old man 🤙 please chuck em in the expresser for me ledge ❤️
Cheers mate, they should be on the way 🙌🙌
should run the gopro in a waterproof housing mate! keep the salt out of everything
That would be nice, but then you don’t get any sound 😩 it’s a bit of a hard one!
Great watch again 👍🏴
Cheers Ali 🙌🙌
Great viewing mate, cant wait to get back amongst it after lockdown
Cheers legend!
Use t o get loads of arrow squid at bribie island off the bridge under the lights...
That water was stunning! Flat as a tac, couldnt have ordered it any better
I know right! Love it when the weather and the fish (or squid) play the game!
Man, those look like great baits. Do you ever use them live?
I haven’t in a while mate. Bit of a hassle tracking the squid down then going fishing. But the results would probably be worth it 👌
Fantastic days squiding. Thats a lot of squid. We are only allowed 15 bag and 45 boat in SA. Well done🎣
Cheers mate. You guys get the big southern calamari down there don’t you? Those would be 4-5 times the size of these guys
@@SammyHitzkeFishing yes mate. Most definitely get some good size ones here.
How do you select the area to fish for the squid?
Trial and error mainly mate. Look for the right structure and give it a whirl!
OH MY GOODNESS! >> A FRIENDZY
Cheers Cathy 🍻🍻
@@SammyHitzkeFishing AND TO YOU AS WELL. : }
Seems like you went fishing with the monopoly man ...nice mustache hahaha
Hahah he does too 🤣🤣
@@SammyHitzkeFishing brother I need you to help me id a fish. Where can I send you the pic
Great work, thanks Sammy
Cheers mate!
Nice one Sammy!
Cheers Mum 🍻
What an awesome video!
How do you find an area that's good to try squidding? I've had a squidding jig in my tackle box for about 4 years now and I've always wanted to try but never known the where and when to squid fishing.
I'm Brisbane based too, obviously not asking for exact spots but any generalised tips to get the brain ticking would be appreciated
Manly area is a good land based spot
@@Kearnesy thanks mate, have a small tinny to get a little bit out and about :)
Manly / Wellington point are good areas to start or down the goldcoast in the Broadwater
Hey mate, I generally fish the shallow weedy reefy flats of the bay islands for the tigers and the deeper rubble for the arrows. They do move around a bit so it’s more a matter of trying a few spots until you find them 👌👌
Thanks guys! More time on the water sounds like a good thing to me! Appreciate you both taking the time :)
get the dogs
Got them!
1st Yew
Yew!! 👌👌👌
yewww sick vid
Cheers mate! Thanks for watching 👌👌
whats the idea of the bait on the jig? squid and cuttlefish dont have the ability to smell so im not sure what its going to achieve
According to the research I’ve seen mate squid and cuttles have a very sensitive sense of taste and smell. So using bait is almost like they are eating the real thing 👍
