I recently started working as a household assistant for a family and I love my job. There is so much wisdom in seeing where you could use help and asking for it. My goal is to do my job well so my boss can enjoy her free time more with her children.
I just found this video and it was exactly what I needed to hear! Hiring a household assistant may not be in the budget for us right now, but just having that affirmation that I’m not alone in these feelings of being overwhelmed and my brain being so full was such a blessing. Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi Diana. I hope you and your family are doing well! I'm not sure if you'll even get to read this since the video is a year old and you have retired. But in case you do, I was wondering if you would be able to email me your job description for household assistant since the link no longer works. I wish I would have seen your videos last year but they just popped up today on my feed. I wish you and your family the best!! Thank you.
Hi. Just found you too. You tell the truth and so many families need to hear this. Two working parents makes a household a living chore !!! It was not meant for both parents to work full time. But here we are. I too would love a copy and I will try to find you on Facebook too. Thank you again for your honesty ❤
Household assistant…wow! I wished i knew about this sooner. Sounds about what we’re looking for. Especially not having a family or friends close by its so hard to get help. After having my son im struggling to do everything on my own. My husband helps so much but he is working fulltime and i stay at home with our son. I always feel guilty getting help because i just stay at home. My husband has been telling me to consider getting a cleaning lady and a babysitter but i just can’t get myself to it. Even considered and Au Pair. Thank you for this.
This is SUCH a common struggle for SAHMs! I hear this all the time from coaching clients. Just because you don't work for an income doesn't mean you can't have help, or are even able to keep up everything in your home yourself! You are doing the work of a village of people all on your own! If your husband is supportive, it would probably be a huge blessing to not just you, but HIM as well. It sounds like he wants to help you so you're not struggling. :) Give it a shot and if it doesn't work, you can go back to doing it all yourself. :)
You forgot to thank yourself because you are working just at HOME. taking care of the house and family is not sitting at home watching tv eating bon bons. You are the house manager and every good manager needs to delegate responsibility too.
Wow. This was great. To advance in anything we do, we need to delegate to give priority to the things we have to do. Don’t feel guilty and I look forward in my own life to analyze where I can implement this concept. My husband and I run a ministry and I was thinking of hiring a house manager. I work full time. We have several people stay in our home and need the help to manage them. Things just fall to wayside. We need help. Thanks for sharing this.
If you can swing it (the financial cost of hiring someone), it's worth a shot, friend! That work could bless someone AND it could help you feel like you are stewarding things well for the people you care for. :)
Love this concept and choosing to make time for high-quality family and personal time and bless someone else with additional income! We haven't found ourselves in need of a household assistant yet, but one of my favorite time-savers and outsourcing opportunities is grocery delivery. We also want to be good stewards of our money and not overspend on fees, so we use our local Walmart's grocery delivery service. It saves so much time, helps us to be intentional about meal planning, and stops us from in-store impulse purchases. I hope to never go back to regular grocery shopping!
I am from the Philippines and though it is a poor country, not everyone is poor. SO, chances are if one has a good job, they have a stay in household helper. I was one at some point in my life. That is how I finished college. It helped with tuition, boarding, and allowance. However, now that I am here in the US, it is kind of pricey and I am not willing to do it since I am used to household chores. But nothing wrong with having one if you are willing to spend that money. It is worth it.
I appreciate that insight! Thanks, Angelie! I have heard it's much more common for middle class people to have help (often even live-in help like you said) in other countries. I'm not sure why we struggle so much with that idea here in the States.
Thank you Meredith. :) It's honestly a. bit terrifying after how much been I've been attacked/misunderstood for this in the past, but I think it's an important topic.
I'm new to your channel and I love this perspective! I have a house cleaner once per month but I love the idea of a household assistant weekly. I may look for someone like this soon. We live in a college town so that definitely sounds like a good source for help. I'm currently 43 yo and pregnant (I have 2 teen boys but my husband has no children and we just got married 4 years ago, then had 3 miscarriages) I look forward to caring for my baby and I'm so thankful to be pregnant with a so far healthy pregnancy but now that I'm older my body is definitely going to need more help in the household work department lol.
You definitely could find someone in a college town! :) Just try to look for someone who's not leaving town in summer, would be my recommendation! (Unless your teen boys can carry that load in summer! ;))
Your job description link doesn't work. I have hired several sitters and had them also do light house cleaning and some food prep for myself. It worked out so so.... I found most young people can't manage a household and most other people don't want to do more than the minimum. Now that my kids are older I basically just need help with homework, making sure my kids do chores, light house keeping, food prep, organization of my home, possibly take my kids to after school activities, manage our food budget, grocery shopping. I am watching this because I'm about to put out another ad.
Our local cost of living is very low for the nation and I asked the lady who used to do stuff like this for me about this and her thoughts on the hrs and rate you put and her response was: "I'd never do all that in 3 hrs..and definitely not by the hr..that all is most of a day..to do it right.. That's a flat rate job Elena..I wouldn't touch that for $18 hr @3 hrs..6+ to do a proper job..And I doubt anyone will do all that in 3 hrs..for that low $, unless they really need the $ and then it's a hit and miss for them.."
Haha oh goodness, yes, I imagine this job WOULD take several hours if all of the tasks in the job description were weekly tasks. Some are weekly but many are biweekly, monthly, or even only as-needed. Our current assistant is able to complete all these tasks in about 2 1/2 hours easily without having to rush or stress. :) (Our house is about 1700 sq ft if that's a helpful reference point.) And I agree that this job is not a fit for everyone. For someone who has their own cleaning business with overhead to cover and who brings their own cleaning supplies, they would probably not be interested, which I totally understand. We've found that the pay/job tends to be most attractive to college or grad students. :) I figure there are plenty of families in our area who pay nannies/babysitters LESS than this wage and expect them to do childcare PLUS some housework too, and we are asking for zero childcare of course. Hopefully it goes without saying that if someone isn't willing to work for that amount, I COMPLETELY respect that and of course don't expect them to apply. :) Regardless, I appreciate you taking the time to comment Elena! :)

Yes!!! Super smart! I hear similar things from SO many clients who use the Walmart delivery!

I can’t believe people were criticizing you for getting help. So many of the women in the Bible had helpers in the home.
