Fun fact: In Biblical tradition the story of Noah, found in Genesis, was originally known for leading to the first ever crop harvest. However, due to the flood all crops were blue. This led to the Book of Genesis and thus the story of Noah, getting the working title Blue Harvest, which just so happens to be the same working title of the original Star Wars
@@sonnic1995 why? it's played out to the point where everyone expects every comment to be a blue harvest "joke" because no-one here has an original thought or any creativity with their jokes. Wasn't even that funny when they were doing it in the vids anyway.
The leading theory as to why so many different cultures throughout history have some sort of flood myth is cuz most cities and civilizations were built around rivers for agriculture transport access to fresh water etc. Rivers can overflow and flood, and that would be their world as they knew it, flooding. Over time, as myths tend to do, the stories were embellished and mythologyized
@@Dynomafia139 yeah, it was called "blue harvest" because of the bountiful harvest that came from nutrient-rich soil deposited by blue river water during times of flooding, which coincidentally was the working title of of the original Star Wars 1977
Deeply impressive that the local references on this show have now surpassed “Australia’s Own” actors and the henchman cars from MI2, to the point where we’ve narrowed it to one specific street in Melbourne that I can neither confirm nor deny was in the movie “Virtuosity”. Incredible stuff
The way this episode is so focused and at the same time can go off track at any moment is such an amazing feat of storytelling. Take note, Darren Aronofsky.
There's actually a very simple explanation as to why stories of a great flood are so prevalent in ancient literature and myth: the earliest cradles of civilization were all built along river valleys where flooding was a common and devastating occurrence. These stories would have been passed down as warnings to future generations and become embellished over time. As a point in favour of this, ancient Egypt is notable for not having a cataclysmic flood myth because the Nile was incredibly predictable and reliable in the timings and severity of it's flooding and was seen as calm and a life bringing force rather than one of potential world ending danger. It's the same reason why snakes are a regular feature of early myth: venomous snakes appear in many areas of the world and are, generally speaking, incredibly dangerous to people who don't have access to modern anti venom treatment, as such, embellished stories of serpents are a logical result of warnings against dangerous animals
Because while people were just as smart as we are now (if they had the right environment anyway)... their knowledge beyond their own experience was basically non-existent. The scholars or 'elite' might of course have had some more knowledge about the world and the way things work - especially in certain civilisations - but the general person was basically a moron. Their tiny little slice of life and what some local 'wisemen' told them was all they knew and if they experienced a bad flood they can understood 'what if it didn't stop?!'.
To further the snake point, I've heard the theory that it may also be related to how our ancestors (pre human) lived in trees and snakes were one of the most regular, dangerous predators. Fascinating stuff
Or it could even be a common myth from an older religion that remained as cultures split and divided each new culture adapting the story to their own newer system of beliefs
Noah 2 would've been cool, but instead of a second flood, maybe like a magnitude 8 earthquake, sand storms, or volcanic eruptions. It could be a movie franchise about Noah going through and surviving every natural disasters.
Noah starts to feelan earthquake beneath his feet, looks at the camera and says "ahhh sheeeeet, here we go again." Then the Noah 2 title card drops with a power metal guitar solo.
As someone who grew up with religion, going to church, and in a religious family, I loved this movie purely for the fact that it was willing to imagine what the reality of a fantastical story might look like. So many western christians are too comfortable skimping over the weird in the Bible, and I love that this movie did the exact opposite of that.
9:50 No, Ben, it _IS_ Abraham that God instructed to kill (his son, specifically). Yes, Maso confused it w/ that King Soloman story, but in that story God _NEVER_ tells Soloman to kill the baby. Soloman himself *proposes* cutting the baby in half in order to ferret out who the real mother is. It was a clever ruse.
@jackiechan5815 i mean. it makes sense in context. It's Solomon's early days of rule and he just asked God to make him a good judge. So the next day, Two prostitutes who supposedly live In the same room in a brothel comes to him for a trial. They both gave birth around the same time. One mother's baby died shortly after and the other lived. Each claims the baby that lives is hers. With one claiming the other switched them inher sleep after the death. Solomon proposes the cutting him in half as a 'compromise', but he never actually intends to do so. He just watches the women's reaction. One accept the judgement, and says its only fair both of them will have dead children. The other pleads with the king to not kill the baby and says she'd rather he'll be raised by the other woman than die. By those reactions, he concludes the actual mother is the one who wasn't ok with her son being killed

I'm blown away by the fact you used clips from The Chosen to represent the feeding of the 5000. I love that show and love when people refer to it when not even actually talking about it. Also "look it's more about the vibes" is actually a legit argument in Biblical scholarship
Darren Aronofsky is my favourite director, but not because I think his films are particularly great, but I just love to say his name so much. if that bit in Donnie Darko is right, and the words "cellar door" are the most beautiful words in the English language, then "Darren Aronofsky" is a very close second.
For the record, the whole world wouldn't have to flood. It was THEIR whole world. The Bible isn't a story about all of humanity. It's about the personal histories of the people who wrote it and their relationship with God. For example, anything happening to native Americans wouldn't be in the Bible, since Middle Easterners wouldn't know anything about them and God is unlucky to be like "hey by the way, these people tens of thousands of miles away"
Not to be a jerk, but there isn't a similar version of this story in Islam. There is this story. Noah is recognized as a prophet of God in Islam, since the religion builds and expands on the Torah and New Testament.
In the Bible, God promised Noah he wouldn't flood the earth again. Normally I never do this, like ever, but I'm actually pretty proud to say I wrote a book a few years ago called Year 47 about what would happen if God broke that promise. It's a survival horror western. If that interests you, go give it a look-see. If not, cool. Love you.
All I can picture now, is God raising his hands in anger about to send a flood, and off to the side Noah points his finger at him with a side eye, going "Heyheyhey!". Then God slumps down grumbling.
Science Trivia! Noah's boat was too large and would have sank due to the wood flexing and water intruding. This was a problem with real ships that were smaller in construction. In addition, floods leave a layer of material sorted by the moving water. If we had a global flood we would expect to find a global layer of flood graded strata dated to the same event. We have found no such layer.
And there were, you know, other civilizations at the time... like just before the flood and just after, and there doesn't appear to be any disruptions to their civilization.
....and having breeding populations reduced to such a small number would create genetic bottlenecks. It is a problem facing cheetahs in real life. ...and we don't have enough water in the atmosphere for that kind of a flood. ...and we would have to turn the planet into a pressure cooker to hold that much water in the air, so everything is already dead and we don't need a flood. This list goes on and on. There are lots of aspects that don't really work.
In regards to the Deadpool question: In the comics, there is actually an 'evil' version of Deadpool that was made from discarded parts of the original Deadpool. A fan (I think) went around collecting all the parts Deadpool had lost in fights (an arm here, a leg there etc) and kept them in their freezer. Then DP found them, tossed them all in a dumpster and went on his merry way. The parts them thawed out, the healing factor kicked it and all the parts glommed together to form a new Deadpool.
At 9:50 Ben corrects maso saying it was Solomon, but I think Maso was thinking of when God told Abraham to kill his son to test his faith, then stopped him right before he did it.

I'm blown away by the fact you used clips from The Chosen to represent the feeding of the 5000. I love that show and love when people refer to it when not even actually talking about it.
Also "look it's more about the vibes" is actually a legit argument in Biblical scholarship
10:15 the fact that they’ve conflated two separate bible stories (Abraham and Solomon) is proof that the Bible is way too hard on kids
Who's to say Abraham didn't have a gerrymandering plan to cut up Isaac?
The “but here’s the Thing” joke always gets me
1:00 “heres the thing” lmfaoo
Darren Aronofsky is my favourite director, but not because I think his films are particularly great, but I just love to say his name so much.
if that bit in Donnie Darko is right, and the words "cellar door" are the most beautiful words in the English language, then "Darren Aronofsky" is a very close second.
For the record, the whole world wouldn't have to flood. It was THEIR whole world. The Bible isn't a story about all of humanity. It's about the personal histories of the people who wrote it and their relationship with God.
For example, anything happening to native Americans wouldn't be in the Bible, since Middle Easterners wouldn't know anything about them and God is unlucky to be like "hey by the way, these people tens of thousands of miles away"
on the other hand the humans who wrote the bible didn't include native americans because those humans didn't know the americas existed
@milliondollarmistake chicken and egg but yeah
Give Ben a raise. The editing in this was truly a masterpiece. Lol
Maso has mentioned gerrymandering twice this week.
i think he watched the map men video. he mentioned them too.
Another masterful edit by Ben (and Maddie!). I was howling at some of the visual inserts here.
Not to be a jerk, but there isn't a similar version of this story in Islam. There is this story. Noah is recognized as a prophet of God in Islam, since the religion builds and expands on the Torah and New Testament.
Hearing “Hawk Noah, pray on that thang” was an absolute flash bang to start the video
15:02 seeing Tim Mackie in a Mr. Sunday video is a crossover that was no where near my bingo card.
8:20 for anyone needing to go back to this amazing frame
The 3-second clip from "Only God Forgives" is just the sort of deep cut for a tiny visual pun that makes me love these videos.
It also never would’ve been able to fit all of the food required for just one elephant, let alone all the dinosaurs
....and having breeding populations reduced to such a small number would create genetic bottlenecks.
In regards to the Deadpool question:
In the comics, there is actually an 'evil' version of Deadpool that was made from discarded parts of the original Deadpool.
YAY! WELCOME BACK BEN! AND WELCOME MADDIE!
I genuinely thought the third movie was going to be Cinderella Man, and now I'm baffled because I barely remembered that this movie even exists.
Wolverine would die. There would be two Deadpools.
There *have* been
At 9:50 Ben corrects maso saying it was Solomon, but I think Maso was thinking of when God told Abraham to kill his son to test his faith, then stopped him right before he did it.
God is a low dog
The Tim Mackie pull was unexpected
Ben from Canada clearly an exvangelical and/or doing some deconstruction
Hello from America at 6:50 AM! Baby got me up so I’m glad I got some new good content to watch!!
i've done my research by watching this video. rocklords and things, good stuff
The Bionicles are historically accurate
Ben and Lawrence blow me away every episode. Just true GOAT behavior.
And hi, Maddie!
