Physical media is more important than ever

  • Physical media is more important than ever. There's a lot of talk out there across the internet about physical media being a thing of the past and everything going digital, with us being forced to stream music or tv and movies through apps such as Spotify or RUclips or Netflix or HBO Max, or buy our games digitally through GoG or Steam or Epic or whatever site. But with licensed games disappearing, movies being used as tax write-offs, TV shows cancelled and removed from streaming services all together, and music going out of print, the need for DVDs, CDs, records, video tapes, and discs and cartridges of video games has become obvious for the sake of media preservation, because we're winding up with lost media at an alarming rate and these companies want us more and more to get comfortable not owning the media we buy, with subscription services such as Gamepass or Disney+ or whatever else. I'm tired of pretending like things are fine. Libraries should get copies of this media so we can preserve it and people will be able to experience it. In this video I talk about the importance of being able to experience media and how that's more important than pretty pictures or perfect sound, as a way of seeing the big picture. I also talk about stores such as Best Buy phasing out their physical releases and the negative impact it will have on collecting and media in general.
physical media is dead, physical media dying, physical media vs streaming, physical media 2024, physical media vs digital media, physical media video games, physical media best buy, physical media is not dead, physical media is dying, physical media is not dying, best buy physical media rant,

I never gave up my DVD collection or switched to streaming. I like having a movie and TV library catered solely for me. I also like knowing my DVDs can't be censored or edited like so much media is now. I also don't like to rent. I like to own things, not pay the rich for what they will always own.

I digitized my entire collection of movies to a personal server, tossed out the boxes, but kept the discs and artwork in space saving plastic sleeves. Best of both worlds. I refuse to toss any of my media because it could vanish or be altered one day.

Personally I don’t have a problem worth streaming except that some things are now never released in a format that you can own. The only option to “own” in that case is to sail the high seas. Maybe if media companies don’t want piracy they shouldn’t be so anti-consumer. But to me streaming is the internet equivalent of a video rental store.

I now have allot of dvd that are fucking useless now thanks to disc rot... all from Warner Bros as they had one plant that made shit and those discs are going bad. There is allot of videos detailing it
Like my Christopher Reeves Superman films. Discs are all rotted. Can't watch them anymore. I bought another copy to replace them...those discs brand new just out of packaging are rotted.

First time viewer here. I share many of your opinions, and I too have faced the same ridicule and confusion from some people when I told them I happily collect physical media and prefer it over digital or streaming.
I totally agree with you. It's a terrifying prospect the way our society is pushing this narrative on us that physical media is dead and we should only download or stream our content. It's like some bizarre parallel world where we can only ever rent what we love or want to own, but never actually own it. But that's now what's becoming our reality, and I hate it. I own a massive blu-ray and DVD collection, and I'm proud of it. I own films you can't even find on streaming, and the best part? I retain all of the original special features too. I love cinema; I want to see how films are made and the people who made them. You lose all of this on streaming; yet you pay the same price to rent the movie or for a streaming service as you would had you just owned the DVD.
I'm the same with games, too. I'm so glad I kept my PS2 and all my original games. Not only are most of the games I own virtually impossible to find now, or priced at a ridiculous level I wouldn't be able to afford anyway, but as you said, pretty much all of these games would just be lost to time. One of my favourite FPS games of all-time on PS2, Black, has never been uploaded anywhere else as a game you can download or play. If I didn't own my PS2 and my copy, I'd never be able to play it again. And many of the games from that generation hold up better than most today -- It's not all about graphics, as you said; it's about replayability, fun, the story, and the PS2 gen had all that in spades.

This is soooo much more serious than how individuals prefer to consume media. I personally hate clutter. Collecting physical media could be inconvenient even when it was widely available. But the digitalization of everything was a mistake intentionally promoted to the benefit of corporations, government organizations and NGO’s intent on making everything a subscription (rent seeking) to services vulnerable to all sorts of political pressure, and the rent seeking is not just limited to media but housing (out of reach of most young people in many areas, making the building of stable communities very difficult) transportation, food, everything. But worse! It’s about control of information. We are facing a sort of Library of Alexandria situation. I’ve watched streaming versions that have clearly been edited for any variety of licensing or political reasons. Publishers are admittedly editing classic and children’s literature ( & not just for overt gratuitous racism, homophobia, etc…) The public library in my area has been purged of all but a very narrow spectrum of acceptable thought. Keepers of physical media are now defenders of history and culture. They’re the only backup file/ recovery for what looks to be a corrupted crashing real world operating system. I’m not opposed to digital content but if you love something or think it’s important you must preserve it because if it becomes inconvenient in any way to the powers that be or desired narrative (and that might simply be that some things, policies or ideas were actually better or performed better than what is currently prevalent, and alternatives are possible) it will at best be edited & at worst disappeared all together. There were those who promoted the idea that “you will own nothing and you will be happy”- W.E.F.. But they have proven untrustworthy with the world’s art, history and cultural heritage. We have to take it into our own hands. It’s safer dispersed among the people than concentrated under centralized powers. Humans need to maintain and defend their right and even ability to have divergent and even subversive thoughts. We are to believe that in the past there was always nothing but racism, sexism & homophobia, not beauty or and objectively better quality of life in many places and many ways. We are to focus only on the technological advances and convenience of not having to do things IRL or deal with other human beings. The alternative to resisting this is absolutely dystopian. The kind of thing that books and movies of the past tried to warn us about and the reason many of those very books and movies are at risk of someday being disappeared.

I hope CDs and DVDs become hip just like vinyl again, I mean, most of the factors that would make it viable are getting aligned (Millennials reaching their 40s, as well as Gen Z entering the workforce, which inevitably will become a source of generational nostalgia), as well as increasing streaming prices and stuff.
I'm a zoomer who has, until very recently, expected music and movies to be "free" to access, and I don't feel shame to sail into the seas to find my juicy MP3s and FLACs, but then I look at the only couple of CDs we still have from maybe 15+ years ago, and they're still there, and even the most scratched CD my dad has could be ripped flawlessly onto his PC, whereas I had an SD card full of music break, and I haven't been able to recover a BYTE of that info. If we're talking about the 'crisp-ness' of films, Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, etc, all compress the hell out of the things you watch, especially RUclips. Watching a film in "4k" isn't 3840x2160@23.97fps with an extremely high bitrate, it's a lower resolution at a real low bitrate. Buying a 1080p Blu-Ray disc can look substantially better than a 4k RUclips video or a Netflix stream, just because it doesn't have to be streamed to thousands if not millions of people at once.

The thing about Media quality is, CDs and DVDs are significantly higher quality than Streaming services.
The track Quality of an Album on CD is MUCH higher than what you get on Spotify.
And a Bluray DVD movie has much better image quality than any Streaming Service offers even with their 4k HDR option.
So if you want to watch the best quality version of the movie or listen to the best audio quality you need to buy physical media.
In my opinion it is actually the best argument for physical media. Because there is no way Streaming services will ever offer Bluray Quality Streaming.

When I was a teenager I used to download songs on my old computer from music and archives websites back in the 2000s, before streaming came along. On my computer there were more than 5000 songs that I downloaded more than 10 and 20 years ago, some songs even dated back from the late 90s. Now I have copied all those songs on my notebook and edited some of them, fixing the metadata such as the title of the song, the album, putting the corresponding image, the year the album was released, the genre of the song, etc.
Although they are not physical media, but files, they have the same functionality, since I can listen to my songs whenever I want, without being subscribed to a streaming service or being connected to the Internet, which makes me highly value all the songs that I downloaded in particular, and physical media in general. We have to keep physical media alive.

The only thing I disagree with is you harping so hard on the idea of the high graphics/quality thing. Like, I collect physical media too, I won't deny the experience of putting in a Blu-ray into my PS3 being a whole experience but... I mean idk sometimes it's just as fun watching old movies with their new 4K transfers and seeing how pretty they can look. Why does it have to be one way or the other? Why should we treat one method like it's superior to the other when they're just different experiences? Physical media has it's place and so does digital media.
I own a ton of physical games/movies and a ton of digital games/movies too, it really just comes down to the mood I'm in. Getting off an 8 hour shift at a retail job I hate, I'm much more likely to gravitate towards the convenience digital content/streaming offers when I don't wanna go over to my shelf, pick out a disc and pop it in. A Saturday night where I'm not working and I want to immerse myself in a gaming world or a cinematic landscape? Yeah, then I'll gladly go over to my shelf and pick out a disc and put it in.
I guess that's just my 2 sense on the matter

There's security in knowing that you can keep using it even if your internet goes down or the website or digital service you otherwise would've accessed it from takes it away or goes down. And beyond that, it's about more than just the content on the disc or cartridge itself. There's artwork on the packaging too, and a lot of physical video game and music CD packages have booklets with additional info inside them too. I personally always use remasters like Warcraft 3 reforged and the GTA trilogy as an exsmple why digital blows ass. Honestly even for indie teams, print on demand could work for physical releases. Sure, they may or may not be the most up-to-date version as time goes on, but it will still be there.
And who says physical media has to be a disc? USB thumb drives for an installer would also work just fine and would be even more accessible than CD/DVD/blu ray long term. Only downside being if you lose the damn thing 😅

We kind of have the usb idea with Nintendo switch cartridges. The problem is that they cost a lot to make. I remember with Minecraft first came out on switch it was digital only because the cartridge would have costed like an extra $10.

I decided to collect shin megami tensei games. I never realized before how infuriating it can be when something does not get a physical release. I am from Europa and we never got shin megami tensei 4 physical, it was digital only. We also never got shin megami tensei devil summoner 2 raidou kuzunoha vs king abbadon. I have to rely on ROM, buy a whole "new" system and game from a different region or give up. It makes me so irritated!

While physical is my preferred way to experience media, I do believe there is a room for streaming (if done right), with a similar philosophy to your indie digital only games. That being said, nothing will replace the joy of finding a movie/game you want to experience for a cheap price or saving up for a expensive, but worthwhile item.

well , a couple of items of good news...1. Baldur's 3 gate now has physical copies for Xbox series X ( mine is on the way ) and the WHOLE game is on four discs. 2. There is a new petabyte DVD like product coming to market that can hold data equivalent to 220,000 DVD's. The future of physical media looks bright.

Streaming and stuff was really only supposed to be for convenience but now we’ve relayed on it too much it’s going to be media’s downfall.
It’s gonna be our fault that film is getting worse and disappearing just as fast as it gets put on streaming services.
Putting games on the internet was supposed to be convenient and easier for smaller game creators to get their content to others because they don’t have the money to mass produce disc copies that major game companies DO have the money to do,
Sooo when bigger game companies put it online instead of selling a physical copy is just a big slap in the face.
We’re sacrificing convenience for joyful entertainment and a good experience.
Don’t even get me started on when they DO sell physical copies it’s much more expensive than buying or downloading it online… like be sooo for real.

Also- As someone who’s played on pc since I was like six I’m glad most of the games i played were on physical media (shout out zoo tycoon and WoW😼)
My parents used to own a gaming store that people can come in and just play from a bunch of different consoles and PC’s, sadly they did sell it was I was still pretty young but I think back to if they was still present today and I think about how much that might spread the awareness about physical media importance.

A physical copy on a modern gaming console dont worth nothing if you console is not conected to the internet you need to download a update and even install the game from the internet

What bothers me most is not having the entire game on disc or cartridge.
I first experienced this with master chief collection, but since then it’s everywhere.
Switch is the worst, with many bigger third party games requiring a large part of the game to be downloaded to even work sometimes.
Farcry 6 famously launched on a Blu-ray with just 700mb, requiring you to download the rest.
At that point, what’s the point of a physical release.
I get patches and future content, but the whole actual game at launch not being included in the box? So much for preservation.

  • @imkayjaylea

Also, when it comes to independent developers whose publishers do not make a physical release, the developer more than often holds IP rights, so like what's happening with Adult Swim Games, the developer of Small Radios Big Televisions just gave away the game for free on their site.
This means that if enough people get that game on P2P, it's now healthily preserved.
If it doesn't get delisted, then people can still support the developer when buying it.

As a PC gamer I would dearly love to have physical copies of games but, the sad fact is, gaming is likely going to be 100% digital for all platforms before the decade is out. Fortunately for me I guess is that there are very few games I want to play anymore so, digital or not, it takes up less and less of my disposable incoming. Which leaves more money to buy my 4k steelbooks, vinyl records, cds, and actual paper books!

It seems like you’re a big Arnold schwarzenegger fan huh? Great video btw. It’s also crazy that even though we still have physical media TV streaming platforms like Netflix would have good Movies & TV shows that’s ONLY “original”. For instance shows like Stranger Things is Netflix Original. So any movie or show that Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, MAX or Paramount Plus “Original” we can’t own which sucks.

The problem with buying the game on disc is that, the disc has a small % of the game and the rest is downloaded anyway, and the dlc you buy is locked to that account, but the upside here is, the disk version of the game can be used again on a other account :-D
Is there an upside to buy the disc version of a game, when 80+ games had dlc's and games more or less are a service anyway? But i can see the point, but when dlc's are locked to an account and only a small amount of the game is on the disc and you have to download the rest.

Maybe the reason all these digital copies are around is to stop hoarding?
I'm more on the digital side as i used to be a physical hoarder myself. Was running out of room and use to have 7 large shelves just for my dvds that took up most of the room in my house. I went from physical stuff to using hard drives to save space and keep my house looking clean. As for steaming i use a custom kodi to stream anything i want to watch at a touch of a button. However, im more on spending more on hardware than software now

I don’t agree that fidelity shouldn’t be a concern; all of this media and art should be preserved and available in its purest, most unfiltered form. However, physical media provides more stable and high-fidelity viewing options than streaming. A 4K UHD Blu Ray is going to look much better than a 4K video stream being compressed through internet.

Not sure modern PS5 games will become retro, as not much fun with no PlayStation Network there. Also the version on disc is full of bugs usually. Still buying games on disc, but it does sometimes just seem like an inconvenience having to swap discs to play 1 race of GT7.

As someone who's a fan of the most volatile form of media on the planet (Anime) physical copies are an absolute MUST. I will ALWAYS own a physical copy of my favorite movies and shows on DVD & Bluray. Streaming has it's place but it has never been and will never be a truly viable replacement for ANYTHING physical, especially here in the States where internet access is spotty at best and outright unavailable at worst...

Yes, I think balance is good. I have a music subscription but I started buying vinyl after I got one as a gift. I liked the feeling of holding the media in my hand. I might switch to CDs though because the quality control is awful. I’ve been getting warped and defective records brand new. I exchanged one which required driving an hour. They didn’t have it in stock so they ordered it and shipped it to home, only for it to have the same issue and it also has a weird splotch that causes a scratching noise when the needle goes over it. I have a good enough player that the player doesn’t cause issues, there is just no quality control because the labels have to squeeze the pressing plants for every last penny instead of investing in more.
